9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
class discussion
Analyzing various disorders through the biopsychosocial model. Also, hearing personal accounts from the professor's experience in counseling.
The class discussions, were very helpful!
The professor's background in psychopathology and practice in psychotherapy was ver valuable. I think all if the students gained something significant from listening to the experience of someone who has worked with afflicted individuals first hand.
The essay portion of the course which consisted of four essays due every Friday for the first four weeks of class really helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the topics we were prompted to write about. I also felt the essays were a GREAT alternative to simply relying on a mid-term and final grade.
Emphasis on empirical research
The powerpoints were helpful esp when referring to DSM-IV criteria
Professor Polokoff was very enthusiastic and tried to bring excitement to the class. Good use of videos and powerpoint.

11. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
She is great, she really pushes class discussions which helps greatly with allowing us to develop our own opinions about the subject matter. I dont really think you can improve when your that good!
Again, the professor's first hand experience and willingness to share really improved the course.
I felt the professor did a great job of introducing the material. Her lectures supplemented the readings which allowed for me to gain a much better understanding of the material.

Provide quizzes throughout the term so the final is not cumulative. It's a lot of information.
To expand a little more on the above question. I believe the essays and the class presentation could have been worth a little more.
12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
projects and discussion
Her level of experience dealing with diverse patients. Ability to apply concepts to everyday life, making them easier to grasp.
Her willingness to stay after class to answer any questions involving the class and personal information.
Her willingness to share and her empathetic attitude towards others who shared personal experience was great.
Her experiences along with her professional experience with patients was really helpful when she would explain certain topics. I felt her knowledge of the material far exceeded that of most other professors that I have had.
She was very helpful with any confusions and very approachable.
She enjoyed teaching her class. She tried to keep the class involved by asking for answers and opinions.
Her open discussions helped class to engage in topic and ask questions

Class discussions were encouraged and were very helpful.
Class discussions
Rachael gave us very useful information and helped us break down the important parts of the book to take with us for real life.
Interactive aspects such as watching videos and commenting on them.

The writing assignments were challenging, but very helpful for future academic endeavors.
The course in general was very valuable because it taught a lot about different disorders that we witness in people and ways to deal with them.
Media examples of the mental disorders so we could see what they looked like. Writing essays also helped improve my writing and research abilities.
Understandable presentation of lectures.
class discussions, and writing papers! i had never written a paper for a psychology class, so this helped develop my writing skills, which I am grateful for!
The powerpoint slides for each lecture were very clear and helpful. I enjoyed the disorders that we covered. I also thought that the student presentations were very interesting and well put together.
PowerPoints and student presentations.
Because I personally enjoy the lecture style classes, I feel that having the class run by powerpoint and in a lecture format was helpful in leaning about each disorder in equal depth. By not feeling the stress and pressure to do too many homework assignments and projects throughout the course, also helped me to take in more information about each topic discussed.
All the information provided (PowerPoints, external links, readings, and etc.)
I enjoyed the conversations that were held during the class. The instructors as well as many students had experiences that made the material from the text more real and applicable outside of the course.

17. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I do not believe this course should be 5 days a week even if it is given during the summer session.

The slides had too many words on them. Condense and make so that it is easier to take notes.

I think that we spent too much time on the individual presentations at the end of the term. With only 6 weeks in the summer term we should not be spending the last 2 weeks presenting to our classmates on topics that won't be on the final. The presentations should have been shorter, or she could have required us to write a paper instead. I would have liked to not rush through the material we are going to see on the final in the first 4 weeks just to make time for these presentations.

I though that the text book was a little dry.
I think that by having only one final at the end of the course is a little too much since there was so much material covered. I feel that if there was a midterm that tested on the first half and a final that covered the second half of the material, then it might be a little better.
The bulk reading.
I didn't have a lot of background in psychology, where I felt many other students did. Therefore, a lot of the material used vocabulary that was very new to me. The least valuable aspect of this course (for me, personally,) was the amount of technical vocabulary that was used as they could've been substituted for much easier vocabulary. I also felt that sometimes important details were stressed less than they should've due to the explanation of less important points.

26. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I would try not to read directly from the PowerPoints. It can be very distracting.
Groupwork might encourage students to participate more in class and form better bonds with fellow students. Class did not feel particularly close. This might be in large part due to the short, six-week nature of the class more than any other factor, though. Some powerpoint slides had typos, but it didn't take away from the quality of the presentation.
Rachael was a great teacher. I learned a lot from her. I loved her enthusiasm and her grasp of the concepts. Great teacher!
Make her presentations more note-taking friendly, and stress the significance of certain material over others so students know what to expect when studying.

I think she could do more interacting activities when learning some of the disorders instead of only lectures, but I can understand how that would be hard because it is hard to find activities to teach about disorders. It's a tough topic.
Cut down on the amount of time devoted to class discussion. Sometimes it got in the way of covering all of the material.

our fourth paper topic was a little difficult to understand, so maybe she could explain it to future classes a little better.
I think Rachel did an outstanding job. Her lectures were very clear and I learned a lot about a multitude of psychological disorders.
I was very impressed on how smoothly this course went since this was your first time being a "professor." The powerpoints were not too much in material and just enough to learn and process each one. I understand that you are looking for some criticism to improve your teaching skills, and the only thing I can think of is to have students do more outside research on their own. Bring in outside articles or look up studies to bring into class. I think that having everyone pick a disorder and present to the class was a good idea and is something that should be kept in future classes.
Nothing that I can think of.
Although the powerpoints were very helpful, informative, and concise, I felt that the instructor read directly from powerpoints too often. To improve, I think that she should use the powerpoints as more of a guideline.

I learned so much from Rachel and would recommend her as an instructor to a fellow student.
Teacher did a great job encouraging students to speak up and voice their opinions, and never seemed to make any student feel like a fool for doing so. Also was able to communicate to students on their level, vs. academia.

Great term!
Excellent professor! Truly enjoyed lecture, and loved that she was not monotone. It kept me awake and into the day's topic! Also loved how she was very understanding when we needed help and did not hesitate to answer any of our questions. Great class because of the professor!

All in all, this was a very fun and informational class. Even though I felt very intimidated from all the other students who had real life experiences or had taken other psychology classes, I did enjoy this class. Rachael was a very fun and I believe her experiences help her be the best abnormal psychology instructor!! I love how she can relate practically anything to the course; this truly shows her passion for the subject.
