13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Able to provide analogies and stories that help to remember important and difficult theories and concepts. He is enthusiastic about the topic and leads engaging lectures.

Mr. Tuthill is a very knowledgeable instructor & he was very good at explaining different concepts and processes so that I, as a student, could move forward & complete the homework assignments & prepare for exams based off of the lectures.
Dr. Tuthill was very inspiring & explained the complicated subject in a unique way that allowed me to understand it better. I really enjoyed going to his lectures, he always had interesting things to share with the class. I definitely learned something new everyday. He provides us with chapter study guides, sample exams, extra readings about our history, and a lot of helpful resources such as lecture videos that helped me review the subject outside of class.

I think if we had some kind of review session before the exams it would have helped a lot.
Nothing, he was a great professor.
The summer class was very very challenging since we only had 6 weeks to cover everything. I would suggest perhaps having quizzes. Having 3 exam that were 4 days apart was extremely stressful & may be really tough for working students.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He understood that we would not be able to cover all of the material in class due to his leaving for a week and the amount of information in each chapter, so he shortened the chapters we need to go over and took into account the pace of the class when writing exams.

He offers office hours and always offers help
After several classes, Mr. Tuthill reminded us that we could go in for help in his office after class & he said numerous times that we could schedule an appointment with him if we needed the extra help. During the course of the 6 weeks, he consistently asked us if we had any questions on the material we had just covered before moving on to the next topic.
He would ask the class after each section if we had any questions. He would also make sure we were paying attention.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, although he will push you and can be a hard-grading teacher, Matt ultimately wants you to learn the material and is enthusiastic to teach his students. He doesn't just want to tell you what will be on the exam. He wants you to learn things because they apply to our every day lives.

Yes absolutely. He is a great teacher & I learned a great deal about microbes, diseases, and brought to our awareness one of the major concerns with our food source (where our meat/chicken/pigs form from). It has definitely changed my diet & I now think three times before I buy products at the grocery store.

This was a very challenging class but I would like to thank him for stimulating my thoughts, sharing inspiring stories & grasping our attention. Some Professors are quite bland but Dr. Tuthill was very passionate & his stories and thoughts were very interesting

He is very enthusiastic on the subject, honest on the topics he's going through, and encourages class participation to integrate the student's learning in Microbiology.

Professor Tuthill posted multiple resources for us to utilize in order to understand the material in detail. Professor Tuthill also tried to engage us in class activities even though our class was extremely boring and most were there just to get a grade.

Matthew Tuthill is a great professor! He is hard but he knows his stuff so he makes it interesting. I would have to wind down from my research methodology class before I got into MICRO. He definitely was able to keep me engaged. His lectures are clear and he tries to make us think by asking questions. His lecture style is great as he uses soft and loud tones to note importance to takes and make us listen. Because he has passion, it makes me have passion for subject matter. I am never bored or get tired even if I'm already tired. Class time goes by quickly. I am never watching the clock in his class. Extra Credit assignments are helpful and also broaden our knowledge and awareness. He is a great professor and KCC is lucky to have him. I will be writing a review on ratemyprofessor.com to encourage students to take the class from him.

Nothing. The class was great.

None. Although he really likes the subject matter of poop, something I would like a little less of, it adds to his humorous personality and character in class.

Nothing really. Everything was given to us in order to pass his class. It is up to us, the students, to take advantage of these resources and learn the material in detail and not just memorize it just for one exam.

He gave several examples for us to learn.
He encourages class participation, and tutoring help.
He gave us many resources that helped us study for exams and also put his lectures online so it could be accessible to us if we missed class or couldn't follow his fast-past speech.

He regularly asks follow up questions during the lecture.
He constantly tells students to contact him in any means possible if we have questions.
He explain the topic very well, it is not his fault if the student did not take notes. He have all the material prepared for the students to learn.
By explaining after every exam that this is a difficult subject and should not be taken lightly. You need to study the material in order to pass this class. And he's right.
He wanted us to learn so he made sure we understand the topic by asking us questions in class. He also asked us if we had any questions after each topic.
He notices the students when they are missing.

He announced several times about his office hours, the resources he provided such as on Laulima, etc.
The professor seemed to really care about the students and our future. He would always try to get us to participate in class.

Yes. He is a great teacher to learn from.
Yes, because he will go in depth on the subject of Microbiology and answer questions when asked.
Yes. I believe he is a great teacher. He has really influenced me to think more about the world and how my own actions can help benefit others and myself. He made many microbiology concepts understandable by explaining them with real life situations. The only thing I would say to future students is that they really have to work hard for their grades because there is a lot of independent studying need to be done.

Absolutely, he is my favorite professor at KCC.
Yes, Microbiology in general is a hard topic, but professor Tuthill is pretty much fair gain in all his exams.
Yes. The course in general is a difficult subject as with any science course, and his exams is tougher than most professors I have had in the past, but this is to truly test if you understand the material or not and not just relying on luck or guessing to see if you get a passing grade or not.
I would recommend him to students because microbiology is not an easy topic (to me) but he is very knowledgeable about this topic. Those who enjoy biology should take him because students will learn a lot in his class.

He provided many real life examples that helped me understand the information better.
He was very enthusiastic and knowledgable in this subject area. I felt that could go up and ask him any question and he would know the answer. He also made the material less boring and much more understandable because he would readily have analogies that were easier to understand. For exams, he would make it clear what was needed to study and this helped a lot because there was so much information to absorb when exams did come around.
He shared a lot of real world problems and experiences and ties it in to the lesson.

Study guide for the final because it's a lot of new information we're learning independently.
Maybe ease up a little when grading the short answer portion of the tests. Or at least give an example to students about what you're looking for when answering the questions. It'll give us a clearer idea of how to phrase our answers or to include certain points in particular that you're looking for so that we receive the full credit.
More interaction in the classroom, some topics are snooze fests so it would be helpful if he taught them in a more energetic room of people. That's the beauty of having smaller classrooms.

He speaks really fast which can be hard to keep up with. Also, the chapter worksheets were due on test days which didnt really help me because i wasnt sure what i really knew going into the test. Maybe if he graded them ahead of time so we could see what areas we needed to work on, that would make it easier to know what you really needed to study.

He provided extra credit work that will help students boost their grades if they didn't do well on the exams
He gave us extra credit opportunities to help boost our grades and he was always available for any questions you may have had.
He would answer question and explain concepts most students did not understand.
Reminded us constantly of tips and dates for tests and extra credit. He also reminded us of the last days before you can drop the class without getting a bad mark.
Brings props in in order for students to better grasp information.
He made sure that we knew what was going on in his class. He gave us worksheets that would make us understand the lectures. Also he has videos of his lectures on laulima, so if anybody missed a class there's always a way to catch up. He does not let his students hanging. He make sure that we understand the lecture before moving on to different topics/chapters. I can't think of anything that he has a shortcoming with in this class. He is super helpful.

Yes, because although this course is a challenge and does require a lot of studying, you learn a lot. He obviously knows the subject VERY well and the textbook very well and teaches well. He has resources that can help you if you are struggling such as oral lectures.

I would recommend him to other students, but I would have a disclaimer. If you are a good auditory and visual learner then this class is very good, however if you are a very hands on learner then I would not take this class.

Learned a lot from this class, it was definitely an eyeopener for me. I thought I would just be learning about microbes, but he gave us so much insight especially on social issues that ties within the subject.
He is a good teacher and a challenging teacher but in a good way. He is very knowledgeable of the material in class.

I am seriously considering giving up eating meat entirely after taking his class. I also appreciate the fact that he shares so much of his knowledge with his students and encourages us to question what is out there and to think for ourselves.

he is able to present the material in a way that students can understand... the material is very deep to begin with, so he uses analogies and pictures in his lectures.
Great lecturer, friendly, fun, fair grader, etc.
He explains everything we need to know and organizes very well for the class. All the questions we asked during class, he answered super clear, never stop talking until he makes sure that the student surely understands all what he asked.

His knowledge and passion
Precise use of word to define fixed definition towards ideas.
- Knowledgeable - Professional - Made the best of situation after finding out late that he was teaching a new course - I enjoyed this course - Passionate about biology
Knows his stuff, very good approach to teaching. Doesn't put his students down and make them feel stupid.
-- He adds humor to the class to keep his audience engaged -- He uses analogies to help students understand confusing materials better. WIth the analogies, the students can picture what is going on; thus, giving them a better understanding of the concept. -- He is very prompt and very reasonable. He admits that he is a hard grader but that is to ensure that students understand the topics that are being told.
He encourages class participation and he always wants to hear questions and/or comments regarding subject matter. Matt is genuinely interested in the material and encourages students to take an interest in the biomedical field. Matt is also accessible outside of class and I have enjoyed numerous conversations regarding my own research and my interests in biomedical science.
Dr tuthill is a really great teacher, he takes boring, complicated, difficult subject matter and makes it easy to understand and interesting to learn.
Certain chapters he was excited about which made me excited too.
We can have a sense of intimacy. He is very appropriate for a teacher. He is the best teacher.

- be more consistent with textbook. dont test on slides where there is no further explanation but the slide itself and what was said in class, in other words, material that is not in the textbook. - could have gone through some chapters a little quicker - ch 10 could have been done in two classes instead of three. understandeable, however, since this was first time teaching course. - should welcome feedback from students as a way to improve as a teacher. did not seem to be interested in feedback, or perhaps got just a little defensive about it.

I would have liked if he had followed the book more. There is a lot of material and it's difficult to remember the lectures accurately. I relied on the book a lot but it didn't seem to help much.
The class is sometimes too hard to follow.
No changes for Dr. Tuthill. In regards to the class: - Smaller classes - Earlier class time, or at least have a class scheduled after the class, so going overtime won't happen. Or make the class time longer--3 credits? - Stick on a lab fee so we can have our own culture plates. I think the reason we had so much contamination issues is because we had too many people on a single plate. I understand that being green is good, but in the end, especially in regards to the lipofection experiment, if the experiment will fail because of a few careless students with less than stellar aseptic technique, we might as well spend a little more on plates so that all that lipofectamine, hygromycin, etc. won't be utterly wasted--having separate plates surely will increase our chances of success.

He encourages them to go to his office hours or to ask him questions for clarification. I think this is important because he is very inviting and approachable. I barely talked to Dr. Tuthill outside of class but when I did, I gained so much out of it and I felt like I learned the concept so much more. Also, it was assuring to know that I was understanding the materials properly.
yes, he made sure he knew almost everybody's name within a couple weeks and always encouraged student interaction. I never felt uncomfortable approaching matt with a question.
Constantly reminding us of the drop/withdrawal dates s we can protect our gpas, and allowing us to help make decisions as to when quizzes should be.
I had the impression that he enjoyed the A students more, and the students that were struggling or just average kind of got overlooked and were intimadated by Tuthill and the stronger students.
He often asks students, are you okay?. And I really feel better because I can feel that he is thinking about us.

Absolutely. Such a huge asset to KCC. He could be at some med school on the mainland, but he chooses to be here. Students definitely should be more grateful.
I would recommend him to students who don't mind a lot of studying and review. The info in this class can get really detail-oriented so some students may or may not have a hard time with that.

NOTE: This is actually for the BIOL 275 LECTURE--I mixed up the surveys...sorry! - Articulate, explains things beautifully and makes everything seem amazing and elegant. - Good philosophy for teaching - Writes challenging exams--which motivates us to study harder, and thus learn much more. - Stern, but nice.

(- You really don't need a study guide.) - Maybe have the bioinformatics project mid-semester, in which the preceding exercises would be due earlier (e.g. every week or two, versus every 2-3 weeks). It was difficult having to meet up with partners to collaborate on a project, especially when the project itself seems so challenging. - While all tangents that were embarked upon were fascinating, and really added to the material (particularly in regards to the biotechnology chapter, which took at least 2 weeks to cover), I wish there was a little more time to cover the final chapters on the syllabus. It's one thing to read the textbook--it's a better thing to hear Dr. Tuthill lecture on the material in addition to the book.
Better organize the Power Points.

Matt can relate the course material to real life, which helps the students better relate to it. He is mostly on time. He does his best to make time to see his students when they need help. And is willing to address the concerns of others.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Teach upper levels because he has trouble understanding how a student doesn't "get" it.
Maybe it's too much to ask for, but in the laboratory aspect course, wouldn't it be a decent idea that the professor himself would perform the experiment along side as a "control" as well? It might be a time issue since students inquire during the wet lab therefore outnumber the time the professor would have to actually perform the same assay in class. That would mean it'll probably require the professor to perform the assay outside of class time so maybe it is too much to ask for.
I think he can limit the amount of project he makes his students do. I think doing the biotech project and poster board project is sufficient already to help students grasp the material. Furthermore, I think he can put more information on the power points to go along with the pictures and graphs.

He didn't.

After Matt goes over some material in class, he asks the class if we had any questions or were confused. And if some people were confused he would go back and further explain the material.

No, he's too moody.
Yes, his teaching style is precise and easy to follow.
Yes I would recommend Matt to other students because even though he is a hard grader; he teaches the material in clear manner and relates it to life. And because he relates the course material to life, it is easier to recall most of the course material that was went over throughout the semester.

He is a good lecturer. Dr. Tuthill is very knowledgeable in the course of cellular and molecular biology. He is also very enthusiastic about teaching the course.
He covers the material with interesting updated research.
Matt's strengths include his eager and enthusiasm on the subject matter. In order to increase class participation in lecture discussions, he took the time to know students by name and called on them individually throughout the course. He always kept the class aware of when upcoming assignments were due as well as reminders for quizzes and exams. His ability to relate concepts to things that are well-known to students served as a foundation from which students could better grasp and understand topics. Matt also took the time to answer questions to the best of his knowledge that students presented in class. The recaps at the beginning of lecture also served as a great transition into the class to prepare students for the lesson.
Clearly understood subject material and knew of experiments/ideas/real world applications/etc related to subject.
He is not pretentious. He is very real and casual, and that makes him more engaging and approachable. He also has great analogies for things. He really cares about the students and how we do.

It was hard for me to gauge how to answer his test and how to answer them to his satisfaction.
I might suggest possibly limiting time on quizzes in order to allow for more time in lecture.
Maybe not have the last bioinformatics project. It's hard to come up with ideas.

He was very accessible in person and thru email.
He always stressed the need for students to study and read outside of class, as this is a foundation course for many biology majors in the class. He worked with us a lot by providing assignments as extra credit that were not just easy hand-outs, but increased our understanding of the work. He is always available for office hours, and always eager and willing to explain concepts that students may not have gotten in lecture.

Similar to the lecture, Matt's strengths include his ability to relate concepts to real-world things for students to better grasp concepts. He stressed technique a lot in the lab, and demonstrated them to students several times, and assisted when needed in calculations.

He also encouraged students to answer other student questions in order to increase learning throughout the lab. I think that everyone in the class would agree that they like to listen to him talk. - Very well-written lab manual - Funny and down-to-earth - Watched us closely during lab work and called us out on our mistakes/improper techniques immediately as they were occurring.

Matt is one of the best professors I've had (including my undergrad time at a private university in CA). He explains topics well/in an easily accessible way. I like that he repeats things regularly to further reinforce the information. There was actually some overlap in the material that I was learning from zoology 141 and this course this semester and the way Matt explained various processes was so much more understandable and clarified my knowledge for both courses. I also appreciate that he continually reminds students of how what we are learning fits in to the larger, global picture and that our choices as individuals do have an influence on social structures and systems in place. I also think that the course is set up so that it is very challenging but simultaneously extremely motivating. I don't think that the bar is set too high and I appreciate that there are high expectations in this course because I don't feel like there is leeway to slack off. I'm constantly motivated to review material at home and talk to friends about what I'm learning because it's just so fascinating. Anyway, overall THUMBS UP. I have been recommending Matt to many students who are interested in taking micro and could not have had a better experience.

Matthew Tuthill is a great teacher. He is one of the best I have ever had, and without a doubt the best I've had while at UH. He really wants his students to do well and to understand Microbiology. I like the way he teach because the PowerPoint helps especially when you listen to his lecture.

I went out of my way to take this class, my home institution is UH and I don't live close to KCC. I worked his class around my schedule this semester, and I'm glad that I did. Most of the professors at UH don't care if their students do well, so they don't put in the time to making their lectures clear, interesting, or understandable. More professors need to model their classes like him, if they would I think students would have a better understanding for each course and do better on exams.
I was at first intimidated by his syllabus. But I am grateful that I took his class. I appreciate the time he put in to making our class exciting, helping us understand difficult concepts, and applying them to our everyday lives.

He pushed back due dates because we were behind. He was available for questions from students outside of class. Weekly quizzes kept us on track.
He replies to emails immediately. He also ensures that the students are learning the real life applications of the Lectures we learn from class.
He understands his students well enough that when student do not understand what he had just presented, he will represent the same idea but in a different manner so student do understand.

He is very knowledgable with his field of expertise and you can see his passion about his subject itself. Sometimes, it is overwhelming to be in his class because he is just so enthusiastic about it and wants you to appreciate everything about microbiology. Honestly, I coldn't suggest for Mr. Tuthill. He's a great teacher and I wish that he would teach the nursing program or other classes. I would definitely pick him again.
When we rephrases his exam questions, sometimes it is very confusing. Even if you knew you studied for his exams, he has his way of rattling your brain if you truly understood his subject. Not all of us in his class will be pursuing the field of microbiology but i feel like he wants you to learn everything about microbiology even the minute details which sometimes makes me not want to come to class to listen to his lectures.
Slow down a little. Some of us need a little longer to process the incredible amount of info that's doled out each lecture.

I found it hard trying to complete and review the study guide before exams. I thought they were basically over every concept covered in the book. I would suggest having a more tailored study guide that pertain to testing materia since there is no study review in classl. In my opinion you tend to rush through concepts sometimes. I would have appreciated more "stop and review" time after each important concept.

He shows concern for his students by post-poning exams due to circumstances and at the end of every class he reminds us to visit see him for questions or any confusion.
He asked questions and let us know if we had any questions we could ask during office hours, class or even after class. He also gave individual attention to each student when it came to grades and deciding wether to drop his class or not.

In my opinion I don't believe Matthew is the type of professor who shows concern. Either you make an effort and pass or you don't make an effort fail. He always said that this course "IS ALL YOU"
Matthew Tuthill would provide many opportunities to do projects and internships. He even promoted the Service Learning and STEM programs from the very beginning of the semester, as well as changing to an A.S.N.S degree. Tuthill also asked the class about its plans as far as jobs (as well as backup plans), and promoted health and science professions.
Dr. Tuthill gave us many extra credit opportunities. I feel that he clearly makes it impossible to fail his class because he provides many resources for us. During class, he uses really great analogies to help us understand the material more clearly. Since he know that the material is hard, he provides online lectures of his power points. He also has available office hours and responds to emails as quick as possible.

This is my first time to take Microbiology and as an international student i must say that i have never seen myself study this hard. But Matthew has changed and influenced my views, in a good way, about the food industry. It has actually changed my way of lifestyle in terms of buying and eating food. and i have appreciated his lectures especially when he talks about his environmental concerns here in Hawaii.

-tough class for it to be entry level -all exams are fill in blank, essay, and multi (yes spelling do count) -there are no study review in class so have good note taking skills -do all extra credit (its very reasonable and not too time consuming ) because it will boost grade -I wish I would have been warned about exam #3 even if its open book/notes it is still hard so take time to make detail notes about microbes -at the end of the semester some of the photos in lecture are stomach turing so beware
I wish Dr. Tuthill taught other science courses such as Zoology. He is one of the best college professors I have had so far.
I highly recommend this class to anybody thinking about majoring in any type of science field.

I wouldn't change anything for this class. It was well-planned, and the lectures and labs were lots of fun. I very much like the idea of weekly quizzes, as they kept me especially understanding all of the material covered in lecture.

I would highly recommend him to other students because of his teaching style. He is able to take a subject that contains a substantial amount of information and teach the material in a relateable, and timely manner. Out of all my classes, this is the class that I have learned the most information, which also correlated with my other biology classes and better prepared me for those other classes, as well.
Absolutely. Nowhere else can undergraduates get this level of rigorous labwork curriculum with an instructor who understands and accommodates their challenges. He makes biotechnology much less intimidating than it has to be for students with no prior experience.

Keep up the good work! Don't be discouraged if students do not do as well as you would hope, because that falls upon the student to step up to the plate. You have a unique teaching style that anyone on any level of knowledge in any given area can listen to one of your lectures and completely understand every word of it.

Matthew Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher is that he really knew everything there is to know about microbiology. You could ask him any question concerning the subject and he could answer it.
Matt is absolutely passionate about his craft. If there was ever a teacher who was underpaid and under appreciated by his students it's probably Matt. He has consistent energy in all his lectures and pushes students to discover things for themselves rather than spoon feeding us. He does not lecture from the textbook or slides by the publishers. He makes his own slides. He is eloquent and never goes off topic and ties together all chapters. He doesn't just teach microbiology, but rather how it relates to our everyday lives (ie, meat products, government intervention, world history, big business). He encourages students to make a difference in the world and reinforces that idea every step of the way; he truly leads by example. His course is challenging and comprehensive. You really come out with great understanding of the world.
He was an amazingly talented speaker. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures because he taught microbiology utilizing many examples in life that we could all relate to. Also, it seemed as though he was very passionate about the subject matter and encouraged us as students to become more interested in the subjet as well. I would highly recommend Matthew Tuthill as an instrucor to future students planning to take microbiology courses and would gladly register for any other classes that he is planning to teach in the future.

I thought that Professor Tuthill was a great lecturer. He really made the class interesting. I also liked the fact that he provided tools we could use to further understand the subject, such as online oral lectures, powerpoints, and worksheets.

He promptly responds to emails, and always offered resources throughout the semester to earn extra credit or to receive help. His lectures that were available online through laulima were a HUGE success in my success as a student, and I highly reccommend that more instructors provide this vehicle as a back up to their materials in class. He even provides previous exams as study guides for upcoming exams! :)

His ability to make such a tedious subject matter interesting and fun without losing the fundamental components is one of his major strengths. He is well organized, efficient, and willing to go the extra mile to help a student. He encourages class participation without making an individual feel uncomfortable, and he is excellent at clarifying and making analogies for concepts that are hard to grasp from simply reading the book.

He is an amazing teacher with, with his own style and approach to getting his point across. He has his own perspectives on certain subjects, and it able to justify his bias. I believe having a teacher think outside of the textbook chapters makes his lectures far more interesting. His tests are fair but can be hard. He will set you up to learn the basics of microbiology in this class.

Dont be so picky and anal about spelling. I get that spelling is important but it should not be critical or crucial on the exams. Technically, spelling does not measure the knowledge we have about microbiology. If the students are able to explain what they are saying then the spelling is a minor issue.being a spelling anal nut bag is infuriating. I mean if you are able to distinguish what the word is supposed to be then be ok with it because it means you know what the word is. But, if u cannot not distinguish the word then mark it wrong. But spelling is not a huge deal. Also, it gets tiresome to present so much materials in one day. That is how students are unable to retain all the information because it is overloading us with so many information that we are unable to process it all together.

I would take the test out on all of the pathogens. It is great for the overview, however the test wasn't about much of the lectured information. Yes, it was graded fairly but it was just too much information to absorb. The purpose of the test was for students to study on their own, which we all did...but it was a lot to know.

I have had other professors who could care less because they brought in grants for the school and teaching wasn't the professors' main concern. Yes because he does explain the subject well but you really need to study hard ahead of time and you need to be a good speller. Plus on exams he does give partial credit. He is always telling students to be on top of their reading and he always draws on the board to illustrate his topics. He also has oral lectures posted on laulima that has him explaining the same materials he would in class so that way you have extra resources or something to help you just in case you forgot what he said ehich is 100% of the time.

He talks too much about food. I believe he is vegan or vegetarian. maybe that is why he constantly ridicules or criticize meats. It is interesting to a point but gets tiresome because then we are not concentrating on the topics but rather us wanting to eat. So him talking about food gets me hungry.
Some students from before told me how his class is hard, but really isnâ??t. He explained everything very well so everybody could understand. If student want to learn something than it should take Mr. Tuthillâ??s class because he is great teacher.
Matt is the best teacher I have ever taken. I am pursuing my second bachelor's in Hawaii and in my first 4 years of college, from the mainland, I have never come across a teacher as amazing as Matt. He inspires and gives you an immense amount of appreciation for many subjects beyond microbiology. He provides a plethora of tools online for your disposal, including audio lectures and related articles. I can honestly say that I have bettered myself as a person because of his class. How many teachers do more than just teach these days? He is challenging, so every good grade I got on his exams made me proud. Matt is an asset to KCC and should be given a grant to do whatever he wants.
Overall, I felt that he was an awesome instructor (one of my favorite teachers thus far) because I definitely learned a lot more than I expected about the subject of microbiology.

Matthew Tuthill is enthusiastic about the subject area. He is extremely familiar with the subject he's teaching, as well as new and current developments that have changed since the text was printed.
Personally, I think he is the ideal teacher. Extremely knowledgeable,and his teaching style caters to many students. But even if it isn't your style,he provides many resources on laulima (such as powerpoints,oral lectures,past exams),so you still have options. I've been to multiple universities and had countless professors and few put this much effort into the students learning,so consider Professor Tuthill a rare gem.
Mr. Tuthill was a fantastic teacher to learn from. He obviously greatly enjoyed and was very knowledgable about the material. He made every attempt to teach the material at a level that everyone could understand. He also threw in many incredibly interesting stories and examples that not only helped to relay the necessary information and keep me interested, but it also expanded the way that I look at the world around me. It was great to have a professor that was so involved in the subject that he was teaching.
Matt knows his stuff! He knows so much about the subject, and can correlate it with simple examples of everyday life to help his students comprehend it easily. He also teaches with excitement which draws students to become more interested in class.

No changes. It would be great if he could remind us of our exams and what the material were the day before the exam though. We have a syllabus but sometimes I forgot the exact date x]. That's my fault but it'd be nice. Other than that great job!

He let us know our grades and let us have an open book test to raise our grades. Also he gave us many options for extra credit.

He also frequently reminded us of upcoming dead lines to drop the class if we were concerned about our grades
He encourage students to drop by during office hours if needed, he ask questions, and calls on people during class as example of what he is teaching. He always wants to make sure that people are up-to-date with the material before he moves on.
At the beginning of the class he provided us with "contingency plans" in case we dont end up where we wanted. He showed other possible career pathways. I know that its not part of the curriculum but he went an extra mile for us.

He gave an exam purely based on six chapters he didn't even talk about! It was open book, but it was a lot of material to be studying with no direction from him. In addition, he required students to do research and present it to the class the week before finals. Now why would I want to stress over a research project when I can be studying for finals??

He put the material in real life situations and taught about things going on in the world that pertained to the course that i had no idea about. He made class interesting and fun and i've learned way more than i thought i would of. It was a very good learning environment. He put things into ways that were easy to understand and follow.

i think theres too much material to remember on each exam, too much stuff bundle up at one time trying to remember how "this" does "that" the function name and such, would be easier if werent compound all at one time.
Exam 3 was the hardest exam for me, so maybe more clarification on what was to be expected so that students are better prepared.

He really wants you to learn the material but he also wants students to gain outside knowledge which i believe is more important. He got students involved in class by calling on them or using them in scenarios which painted a better picture.

Yes. I think his class is very challenging but success is attainable through hard work. He sets clear due dates and hands back papers/exams quickly and is quick to respond back via email. He also answers all questions asked in class.

He thinks of everything very thoroughly. He would know when a quizzes was hard for us. He would really emphasize what would be on our quizzes.

He knows the material and you can tell he's genuinely interested in it, which makes the subject all the more exciting for the students. He really gets people interested in the subject when most did not start out that way.
Mathew Tuthill is a challenging teacher who sincerely wants the students to actually learn and think for themselves. He is not the most approachable teacher, but he is friendly and kind when he needs to be. He will not give any handouts and is not there to be anyone's "friend", and this probably offends some people, but he does have the students best interest in mind.

Matthew Tuthill is extremely knowledgeable in the subject of Microbiology in lieu of his specialization in molecular oncology. His curriculum allows student to explore the field of microbiology without feeling constrained to the textbook. His lectures are informative and do a great job of relating to everyday life, further solidifying the subjects being covered.

Matt is one of the greats. He's always very nice, is extremely knowledgeable in the field, and is very good at holding the attention of his students. He was frequently available even when we were working independently to answer questions, and often had a succession of people whom he had agreed to help next. The fact that so many people were in line for advice speaks to the fact that he was extremely approachable, and I never felt strange making a comment or asking a question either during our lab work, or even during his lectures.

Sometimes for the quizzes, I thought either more time should be given or the quizzes should have been made shorter so you could have more time to think about your answers.

I would honestly extend the lab time as we always seemed as if we were rushing through most of our experiments prior to the unknown project. I would not take away from the lecture time as the information covered is both important and interesting. More time in the lab, definitely.
He can be a bit intimidating to approach so he could perhaps be less critical of "stupid" questions. But on the other hand this approach may have encouraged student to think for themselves and enhanced the overall learning experience...

I was always nervous to ask him a question. I felt that way because of a vibe he had. I did not want to be made a fool of in class. I have felt embarrassed on more then one occasion when talking to him out loud in class because of the way he responded.

It would have been nice to seem more open lab periods, but that is probably more of a department issue, and doesn't seem like it will be an issue at all come next semester.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He made sure everyone was up to date with our project especially during the unknowns when everyone works individually.
One time I saw that a student, who was constantly behind, could not find a certain bacteria on a slide and waited until the last moment to tell Matt. Matt ended up digging through slides in the biohazard jars on the countertops for a slide for this student. He didn't just leave the student behind with a "It's your problem and responsibility" attitude. Also, when most of us would do bad on a quiz, he would actually blame himself for it. And he loved to come around the room to check our progress from time to time for all the labs.
He went around to each student during the unknowns project to see if they needed any help.
He allowed us to attend his other class if we needed extra time to perform our experiments.

Although I know some of my friends and I felt uneasy around him, there was one student in class he paid extra attention to and always encouraged out loud and who he often praised. I know he has the capacity to show he cares but I think it is only for a select few who he believes is excelling in his class. Others, like myself, feel inferior because of the two extremes.

No, if you are slightly disorganized and have time management issues as you will feel overwhelm and left behind from the second week of class. If you are a biology and or a science major of some sort and plan to get a PHD, are self assured, confident, well learned and thick skin, he's the guy for you. I feel like he should be working with graduate students who are at least working on their masters. I don't think he is stimulated enough in this elementary course. I believe he can be of great assistance and a great mentor for someone further in their studies. I would consider taking another class from him after taking a few more higher level science classes and talk to him when he sees me as someone who is almost his colleague. I believe he is very smart and can be of more use somehow but is limited to a situation that is imposed upon him by KCC. Perhaps you guys can ask him how he would like to teach with total autonomy to write any type of program. Although, my experience with him this semester was not to the best of my benefit, I believe he has the capacity to help create future scientists who could help further our knowledge in the scientific community.

He should not assume that every student who takes his class will become a part of the medical field. MICR 130 is a requirement for many programs other than nursing and pre-med. Teaching the class specifically toward students in those two programs creates a disadvantage for all of the other students NOT in those programs. He should be aware of this if he is not already.

let us ask Q during lecture/after class/office hours. said we could call/email him w/ Q. Refused to make exams easier b/c he wanted us to LEARN. Encouraged us to sign up for LAB.

Matt's enthusiasm and encouragement were great motivators to learn the material and to participant in his lab classes. He is also very approachable which makes it easy to ask questions and request his advice.

Super passionate about this subject, and really knows his stuff. Matt really encourages his students to getting the most knowledge they possibly can about microbiology. Matt provides his students with words of encouragement and also provides them with constructive criticism.

I felt communication was a huge pro, also every student knew what they needed to do to perform well within the lab. I enjoyed learning the techniques within the Mico lab.
He really pushes students to fully understand the material. He doesn't just give the answers.
He really knows the subject matter and integrates it into real life situations. He also encourages questions and never makes students feel stupid or inadequate. I was intimidated by the course and although it was hard (really hard)he made it enjoyable and made the concepts accessible to everyone. His passion for the subject is contagious and it really helps in this subject because it has a lot of "boring" potential.

The knowledge and information I obtained from Micro 140 and 141 was priceless. Nothing, I think the grading without a curve is a great way to get students to truly study for in class quizzes and really gets students motivated to getting a grade they deserve in the class. :)

Tuthill feels per his words, he had it hard in Hilo as a student so as should we in learning. He has his favorite students and he sometimes speaks down to students.

Matt called on each individual student throughout the semester to encourage participation. He also tried to make the course material interesting and fun.

By providing lots of one on one conversations which made a lot of us feel comfortable and really showed concerned with whatever questions any of the students had.
students needed help with weekly quizzes so when asked, he provided study guides that helped with the quizzes
Listening well and engaging the students in topics that were brought up within discussions even if they were not directly within the course curriculum. This little bit made the class more interested in the course.
He replied to emails. He gave us an outline of what would be on quizes; so that we could study off of that.
Yes he always made himself available to us outside of class and via email. He really wanted all of us to understand the subject and be able to integrate the information.

He was always available. He always validated my questions, and was timely with answers and results. He was caring and empathetic with any concern or circumstance but maintained professionalism and a good-positive working atmosphere for all of his students. His grading was fair and his testing was strict, but I believe his students' best interest was always precedence and his methods solicited our highest efforts.

he usually let us know where we stood in grades. he prepped us very well for what to expect at the end of the semester for our unknowns and final practicum.

I have recommended Matt to other students because his classes are fun and you learn a lot. However I always warn them because he is in no way an easy teacher. His tests are hard and the questions require actual understanding rather than just memorized facts. In the end you leave class with a great understanding of the material, but you have to put the time in outside of class to pass with a decent grade.

He's an amazing instructor. His passion really shows with his students that show the same amount of respect in his teaching as they do their own work. He made Micro140 the best class I took so far, and he makes everyone feel comfortable and involved with the entire process.
Sometimes as a professor you have to get to know your students and if you can't help point them in the right direction. I have depression issues from taking his classes. The only reason I did it a second time is because i'm ill and he was all that was left.

I wish i took THIS microbiology lab before taking the lecture at UH, this class was super fun and hands on and really provided me with a stronger sense of what microbiology actually is. This lab class was really educational and taught me so many things that I did not fully understand in my regular lecture class. It also broadened my perspective as to how microbes can help/harm us in the world :) Overall, this was a super fun class and I already recommended it to two of my coworkers that are taking it next semester :)
