13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He knows the material very well.Mr Tuthill is fair on his exams for the most part.
Dr. Tuthill has always did the most he could to produce the best in students performance. Dr. Tuthill is almost always in his office if he is not teaching a class for confirmation or help as well as he responds to his emails in a timely manner. These facts listed above definitely demonstrate some of Dr. Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher besides his knowledge of the field. Not only does Dr. Tuthill try to engage the class in the topics at hand but also does his best to make as many analogies as possible for the class to understand topics better and to pull real life examples of how they are applied.
He knows the material well w/in his scope of practice.
He is the toughest instructor I know.

His passion for science, his knowledge, puts information out in way that is clear to understand, he is organized and presents the material using key points. He keeps current and up to date in the material. Presents a positive attitude in general, enjoys teaching and it shows it. Is upfront with all rules, regulations and special requirements, does not changes rules or schedule without student consideration and participation.

He really knows what he's teaching and he can explain the material in a way that is understandable. Very straightforward during class which is what I appreciate.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Do something about the online mastering material. The questions were poorly thought out and down right incorrect in some instances.

Make exams a little bit easier.
I would suggest giving out a study guide for each exam to give students a little better idea of what to expect for each exam.
More straight forward powerpoints. More frequent and shorter tests covering fewer chapters.
Please write the exams before leactures and base your power points on it. Make it clear what will be on the exam and what not.
Emphasizing on specific topics that students will be tested on just because there is a lot of information that is shared in one chapter.
I don't think it is in his hands because there is a lot to cover in class however, the tests outside of class were a bit inconvenient. And moving on couple chapters before the test on previous chapters were a bit of a struggle.
I have suggestions for material that should be excluded from the class, but that's not a Matt thing.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
I think so. I think Mr Tuthill does the best he can with what he has to work with.
During multiple steps of the semester Dr. Tuthill showed his concerns indirectly by referring to the entire class rather than the individual that there are multiple options if the student was unable to finish the course or was not doing so well in the course. He would always mention the dates that were coming up like the drop deadline and credit change to credit no credit option as well as auditing a class.

The classroom environment is very interactive and he encourages participation. He answers emails quickly and listens to concerns and even changed exam schedule to better accommodate the class vote. He brings up opportunities in different fields of science and encourages students to consider opportunities. He brings voting registration cards first day of class; talks about student debt.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, if you can dedicate the time for his class.
Yes and no. If you are looking for an easy A then definitely not. Like any teacher in a "science" field, Kapiolani's professors definitely push you as a student to think deeper and more in depth as other colleges do. You will most likely leave the class with a great deal of knowledge gathered from the class but only by putting in the time. This being said you definitely have to work for your A in Dr. Tuthill's class like any other, if you want to actually learn the material then his class is the one to take. If one just wants to receive a easy A, go elsewhere.

Yes. This is a hard course, they might as well have a good teacher at it.
Hard exams and you have no idea what will be on exam and what is not that important, but I do not know if there anybody who could teach that stuff better than him. Take him and study on your own because in class he will not point out what you shoul study for the exam. His favorite phrases are :" this class is hard and I am sorry"; "I wrote the worksheets around Christmas time at 3 am that is why they are not very good and you have to understand that". Otherwise he is an interesting person and hot too.
Yes. He has a lot of knowledge in biology, mostly the cellular and bacteria parts so you shouldn't have a hard time learning those things from him. He's also very honest about our Current world situation and he'll kind of give you a heads up on what to expect from our careers and our government.
Yes he is a great teacher that is extremely helpful if you go to the lectures. The class content is pretty tough but Tuthill makes it easier to understand.

Course was difficult and there was a high volume of information to learn by test date.

He is fair and organized.
Matt takes a lot of grief from the students because they don't recognize the benefit of a professor that holds student to a very high level while giving them all the support they ask for so they can have an advantage when the leave college. I hope the administrators support him and recognize all he is doing.

This does not seem like an introductory course.
"Few teachers are great; probably none is great at all times. Yet, many teachers are great occasionally." (Milton Hildebrand, 1973). We need to do everything we can to make these occasional times of greatness occur more often! "Matt" is a great teacher and fun to!
Showed concern for students outcome because when he moved around test dates when he realized people needed more time to study. Not because a lack of studying but because of the amount of material in a small time period.
This isn't really a Matt thing either, but he encourages students to take salg and I think that benefits the school mostly. If he could give students extra credit for using brain fuse would be a good idea. It is such a fantastic tool and every student I talk to about it hasn't heard of it. They have helped me many times!!

Matt is very passionate about microbiology. It shows in his lectures. He is energetic and funny.
Great knowledge about this subject. All of his information are updated to the latest information.
He has a very particular, interactive way of teaching. He had encourage me to take more micro classes.

Matt's strength is his unpredictability. I never know what he is going to say or do in class. It keeps me on my toes and keeps me very entertained in class. Matt does know the material very well but his randomness keeps me entertained in class and wanting more!

I wouldn't change much other than having more than just one exam prior to the withdrawal date.
His way of teaching is very effective for me, so I can't think in one thing that he should change.
Not everyone knows the information as well as you do and you need to actually keep that in mind when teaching and on tests
Could use Laulima from time to time, or just for uploading grades
I am a take home study kinda guy. I wish the chapter worksheets were all I had to study, but I found studying the old tests to be equally important. I guess I want it too easy ;P

Matt's online resources (powerpoint lectures, study guides, previous exams) are very helpful. I felt pretty set up for success.
He give the students all the necessary tools and more to be successful in his course.

Matt projects this attitude as if he is a cold hearted scientist with no friends... but when we fell behind schedule, Matt made major adjustments to the schedule and allowed ample time for us to be ready for the test.

He has a nice balance to his class. For an entry level class he can make the material harder than he does, but he doesn't. Matt keeps the level of learning not to hard but not to simple.

He is extremely passionate about Microbiology!!! He is available for his students during office hours. He is always willing to help when we need a more in depth understanding.

Professor Tuthill is extremely knowledgable on the subject of Microbiology. He is a great orator--he speaks clearly and slowly so he is understandable. I look forward to his lectures. I learned way more than I thought I would and I his class has opened up my eyes to the world of Microbiology. I had a few unusual circumstances that came up during the semester and I felt his concern was sincere and genuine. He is very approachable in person and via emails. He responds to either promptly. His class is not easy and students need to put sincere time and effort into his class.

He explains concepts and material well. He uses a practical approach and incorporates life situations, current news, and stories to make the topic clearer. He also puts up lot of resources that will help students prepare for the exams better.
He was very passionate about the subject, often supplementing lecture with stories and related history and media to link what we were learning with actual human and current events.
The organization of his course and the availability of resources to us, including lectures, chapter worksheets and old exams to look over.

This class is kind of a test/exam based class. I suggest to give out homework to students.

Laulima was never updated, wish he would post our grades progressively as semester proceeded. There is no grades posted even when there's two Weeks left and three exams done.
I suggest that he give out study guides before each exam so that the students know what to expect. the exams were extremely difficult, especially since there was so much material covered.

The exams were very challenging. Its a lot of material to absorb and its hard to remember certain words for parts like fill in the blank. I think multiple choice exams with open ended questions would be fair enough.

When a student was a confused, he'd think of another, clearer way to explain the lesson.
Mat will help with any questions we have, so that we have a better understanding.
He extend exams if the student need more time.
He was always available via email.
I had some personal issues throughout the semester-- I got an illness towards the end which was all distracting and challenging. I was in constant communication with the Professor Tuthill. He was always quick to respond and advise me on my best course of action. I also like that he provided lectures online so those who wanted extra study time or those who missed class could follow along. I also appreciated that he provided mock exams to prep for the actual ones. All very helpful.

He made sure everyone understood by going over the concepts repeatedly, reviewing material presented before, and asking if we had any questions.

Yes, I would recommend Dr. Tuthill to students because if people were majoring in Biology, his class would be really helpful.
I would definitely recommend Mat. He is one of the best at what he does and he encourages his students to push their understanding even more. Mat is AWESOME!!!
He may be hard but he will blow your mind with interesting stories. He shows examples of the materials he is teaching.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Matt's major strength as a teacher was his deep knowledge and enthusiasm of the subject of the course which made it very engaging to learn more about molecular biology. He was also able to use that knowledge to build certain lab procedures which made certain protocols more easy to understand.
Dr. Tuthill has always did the most he could to produce the best in students performance. Dr. Tuthill is almost always in his office if he is not teaching a class for confirmation or help as well as he responds to his emails in a timely manner. These facts listed above definitely demonstrate some of Dr. Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher besides his knowledge of the field. Not only does Dr. Tuthill try to engage the class in the topics at hand but also does his best to make as many analogies as possible for the class to understand topics better and to pull real life examples of how they are applied.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would only suggest that he provides worksheets based off of the lectures or the class book. It would really help with understanding the content more.

He would email us weekly on what we would do in class, and provide alternative if our experiments failed in certain areas. He also was flexible in terms of scheduling quizzes and the final exam.

I would recommend matt to students who are passionate about biology, microbiology and molecular biology, since the amount of material that is learned from him will be greater than most. He is also a great teacher to learn from, making it that much more fun.
Yes and no. If you are looking for an easy A then definitely not. Like any teacher in a "science" field, Kapiolani's professors definitely push you as a student to think deeper and more in depth as other colleges do. You will most likely leave the class with a great deal of knowledge gathered from the class but only by putting in the time. This being said you definitely have to work for your A in Dr. Tuthill's class like any other, if you want to actually learn the material then his class is the one to take. If one just wants to receive a easy A, go elsewhere.

Maththew's major strength as a teacher is his understanding in the field of biology and his ability to use analogies to make content easier to understand.

He knows his subject very well and is passionate about it. Makes fun learning when the professor is passionate about the subject.
Professor Tuthill's strengths were that he would always try and use abstract or real life examples when explaining difficult subjects/ processes, he knew his material very well, and he would always ask for input from the students even if it caused an awkward silence.
He has a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, however this sometimes causes him to go over the material faster than I absorbed. I found the most effective way to learn was to use the homework to espoused myself to the concepts first, then attend lecture with a basic understanding so I didn't get lost in the lecture. He really loves the subject matter, so that is also awesome.

The only change I can ask for is to try and go over long winded and difficult sections that the students seem to be struggling in. Other than that, he did a great job.
When there is time left in class at the end of lecture, go back through the power point slides and watch videos that got skipped, then briefly discuss the video; instead of progressing to the next chapter.
Slow down in class lectures; make classes more interactive instead of just lecturing the entire time; show some of the videos that are in the power points during class so we can get a better understanding of that particular subject, as well as ask questions if need be.
I think it is great to say what you love. Showcasing your passion definitely encourages students to explore a subject more. However, I would refrain from expanding on what you don't like, or think is boring. Considering this is a beginning class it could affect a students potential interest in a particular area.

Tuthill showed concern for students by promptly asking if the content that was just provided coherent or not. If individuals had troubles in terms of biology, he would resolve them.
Fast response for emails and welcomes students to ask questions before proceeding to next topic.
He was always willing to stay after class to answer any questions and concerns. He probably was there for office hours as well, even though he is very busy, but I'm pretty sure almost no one actually visits professors during office hours in 100 level classes.
Matt regularly discussed tests with us and asked for feedback in order to better customize the tests in a way that allowed students to make suggestions for the test.

I would recommend Mathew to students. He will make you think and work hard. His tests are brutal, and will literally crush those who are not prepared. However it pays off in the end.

as a professor, yes, just not for bio 171. It is a general bio course but many questions on the test go far beyond general knowledge of a subject and goes more into finer detain of the subjects he find most interesting or knows the most about. Nice guy, and very knowledgeable, but would be better to have him as a professor in an upper level, more specified, science class.

He has a lot of knowledge on microbiology. He makes the class interesting and makes me want to learn more about biology. He's pretty fair and gives students the opportunity to do better in class.
He is very passionate about what he is teaching and it helps the student want to be interested in the subject.
Professor Tuthill made the subject incredibly interesting and gave real life examples for each of the topics we covered which was greatly appreciated. He was very straightforward about what was expected and he made a hard subject fun to learn.

I did pretty well in the course, but I think his curving procedures would be better by doing a standard curve as opposed to the curve he does. In a standard curve you will always have outliers, and his curve assumes the outliers are a representation of the entire class, which doesn't end up always being the case.

Nothing. I didn't have a chemistry background before this class and felt like I was at a disadvantage because a lot of those subjects were skipped over and written off as to be already known.
Professor can be very opinioned and biased, and sometimes forces his thoughts unto us. It created a very inappropriate learning environment at times.
When discussing a certain topic, I feel like he's very fast at teaching. I suggest that he should slow down a little bit.
Please assign some homework or other assignments so our grade is not just based on exams and extra credit. Tests are hard, and I feel that we should have one class period to review for the test because it actually helps, and maybe grade on a curve. More than half of the students failed his first exam and that shows something. I think that he should take the time to make sure that students understand the material.

Tuthill always made himself available to us whether it was during office hours or through email (to which he always responded as soon as he could). He also encouraged us to ask any questions we could think of and never made us feel like we had a bad question.

The subject of microbiology is difficult and his class is demanding, but if you put the time and effort in to studying, you will do well. You are given everything you need to succeed through his lectures and handouts.
No, he enforces the ideas and opinions he holds to be true, instead of letting us think and choose for ourselves. The way he presents some information is not conducive to an environment I want to be a part of.

You are a very hard teacher. I see that you do your part in teaching and we're supposed to do our part in studying, but it's really hard. This class is more independent because it's a lot of studying. I think you should be a little easier on the students. Microbiology has a lot of information and you, as a teacher should make sure all the students understand and have the material down, and create a study guide on what really is on the exam. Make more assignments for the students. You make the class really hard.

Extremely passionate. Clear and eloquent in speech. Ties in concepts/information about microbiology with other worldly concerns(i.e. politics, ethics, justice). Provides all of course lecture content on Laulima for student review. Writes tests in a way that ensures that students understand the course material vs merely memorizing.

It may be helpful to offer exams in testing center to be taken on students' own time in order to free up more class time for lecture.
at times, because there is so much material, the information is one way, at a healthy pace,with minimal interaction of students. matt stops when a question is asked and everything slows down and the exchanges are informative. wish there was more of this, for example, asking if there are any questions, not only at the end of major topics.
Probably a quiz after each chapter or so just to see how well we know the material and review what we got wrong before we take an exam. This will probably help us in the exam. exams as a check point on what we know is a big chunk on our grade and most likely hurt our grade. . .

I think that Matt should change the way he adds "normalization points" for exams. Adding points, based off of highest score in the class, to make it a perfect score seems to base "normalization" off of the highest raking person in the class. I would recommend sitting in on Matt's class, but would not take his class for credit. He is an awesome teacher however, his test are exceptionally difficult. Micro 130 is already a complicated course, and from the experience of having taken other professors for this same class I can say that you will likely learn a lot from Matt, but you may hurt your G.P.A. in the process.

not sure I liked the curve idea. rather not have one at all. the curve was only an adjustment so the highest score was moved to 100%. there were some students who were retaking micro130 and other students what had a B.S. the micro class before benefited more from this curve.

Explaining the subject matter, he goes through the fundamentals but also delves into the modern applications of the topic. An example is the rapid advancement of DNA sequencing technology. He also does a good job in proving extra material for the class for people who are interested.
Available out of class. Communicated the material well even though at times it was alot so it was a bit overwhelming. Down to earth. A Nice person!

Refine and accelerate the labs procedures. The lab portion of the class could be accelerated and the procedures could be expected to be memorized before the class starts.

Yes. Dr. Tuthill is a great instructor to have as he not only emphasizes what you learn in class but also gives examples of real world applications and makes learning easy and fun.

Dr. Tuthill was very inspiring & explained the complicated subject in a unique way that allowed me to understand it better. I really enjoyed going to his lectures, he always had interesting things to share with the class. I definitely learned something new everyday. He provides us with chapter study guides, sample exams, extra readings about our history, and a lot of helpful resources such as lecture videos that helped me review the subject outside of class.

The summer class was very very challenging since we only had 6 weeks to cover everything. I would suggest perhaps having quizzes. Having 3 exam that were 4 days apart was extremely stressful & may be really tough for working students.

He would ask the class after each section if we had any questions. He would also make sure we were paying attention.
He understood that we would not be able to cover all of the material in class due to his leaving for a week and the amount of information in each chapter, so he shortened the chapters we need to go over and took into account the pace of the class when writing exams.

After several classes, Mr. Tuthill reminded us that we could go in for help in his office after class & he said numerous times that we could schedule an appointment with him if we needed the extra help. Yes absolutely. He is a great teacher & I learned a great deal about microbes, diseases, and brought to our awareness one of the major concerns with our food source (where our meat/chicken/pigs form from). It has definitely changed my diet & I now think three times before I buy products at the grocery store.
Yes, although he will push you and can be a hard-grading teacher, Matt ultimately wants you to learn the material and is enthusiastic to teach his students. He doesn't just want to tell you what will be on the exam. He wants you to learn things because they apply to our every day lives.

Matthew Tuthill is a great professor! He is hard but he knows his stuff so he makes it interesting. I would have to wind down from my research methodology class before I got into MICRO. He definitely was able to keep me engaged. His lectures are clear and he tries to make us think by asking questions. His lecture style is great as he uses soft and loud tones to note importance to takes and make us listen. Because he has passion, it makes me have passion for subject matter. I am never bored or get tired even if I'm already tired. Class time goes by quickly. I am never watching the clock in his class. Extra Credit assignments are helpful and also broaden our knowledge and awareness. He is a great professor and KCC is lucky to have him. I will be writing a review on ratemyprofessor.com to encourage students to take the class from him.

He was very eloquent and explained things to a level where everyone understood. He would break down complicated words that we did not understand which made it easier to follow along

He speaks really fast which can be hard to keep up with. Also, the chapter worksheets were due on test days which didnt really help me because i wasnt sure what i really knew going into the test. Maybe if he graded them ahead of time so we could see what areas we needed to work on, that would make it easier to know what you really needed to study.

Asking if we have any questions after a few sections and asking at the beginning of class if we understand everything.
He made sure that we knew what was going on in his class. He gave us worksheets that would make us understand the lectures. Also he has videos of his lectures on laulima, so if anybody missed a class there's always a way to catch up. He does not let his students hanging. He make sure that we understand the lecture before moving on to different topics/chapters. I can't think of anything that he has a shortcoming with in this class. He is super helpful.

He encourages class participation and he always wants to hear questions and/or comments regarding subject matter. Matt is genuinely interested in the material and encourages students to take an interest in the biomedical field. Matt is also accessible outside of class and I have enjoyed numerous conversations regarding my own research and my interests in biomedical science.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No changes for Dr. Tuthill. In regards to the class: - Smaller classes - Earlier class time, or at least have a class scheduled after the class, so going overtime won't happen. Or make the class time longer--3 credits? - Stick on a lab fee so we can have our own culture plates. I think the reason we had so much contamination issues is because we had too many people on a single plate. I understand that being green is good, but in the end, especially in regards to the lipofection experiment, if the experiment will fail because of a few careless students with less than stellar aseptic technique, we might as well spend a little more on plates so that all that lipofectamine, hygromycin, etc. won't be utterly wasted--having separate plates surely will increase our chances of success.

- be more consistent with textbook. dont test on slides where there is no further explanation but the slide itself and what was said in class, in other words, material that is not in the textbook. - could have gone through some chapters a little quicker - ch 10 could have been done in two classes instead of three. understandeable, however, since this was first time teaching course. - should welcome feedback from students as a way to improve as a teacher. did not seem to be interested in feedback, or perhaps got just a little defensive about it.
I would have liked if he had followed the book more. There is a lot of material and it's difficult to remember the lectures accurately. I relied on the book a lot but it didn't seem to help much.

He encourages them to go to his office hours or to ask him questions for clarification. I think this is important because he is very inviting and approachable. I barely talked to Dr. Tuthill outside of class but when I did, I gained so much out of it and I felt like I learned the concept so much more. Also, it was assuring to know that I was understanding the materials properly.

Absolutely. Such a huge asset to KCC. He could be at some med school on the mainland, but he chooses to be here. Students definitely should be more grateful.

The things that I did not like in my gen bio or the things that I didn't think i would ever like, I forced myself to study it and found them interesting.

NOTE: This is actually for the BIOL 275 LECTURE--I mixed up the surveys...sorry! - Articulate, explains things beautifully and makes everything seem amazing and elegant. - Good philosophy for teaching - Writes challenging exams--which motivates us to study harder, and thus learn much more. - Stern, but nice.

(- You really don't need a study guide.) - Maybe have the bioinformatics project mid-semester, in which the preceding exercises would be due earlier (e.g. every week or two, versus every 2-3 weeks). It was difficult having to meet up with partners to collaborate on a project, especially when the project itself seems so challenging. - While all tangents that were embarked upon were fascinating, and really added to the material (particularly in regards to the biotechnology chapter, which took at least 2 weeks to cover), I wish there was a little more time to cover the final chapters on the syllabus. It's one thing to read the textbook--it's a better thing to hear Dr. Tuthill lecture on the material in addition to the book.
Better organize the Power Points.

Matt can relate the course material to real life, which helps the students better relate to it. He is mostly on time. He does his best to make time to see his students when they need help. And is willing to address the concerns of others.

Teach upper levels because he has trouble understanding how a student doesn't "get" it.
Maybe it's too much to ask for, but in the laboratory aspect course, wouldn't it be a decent idea that the professor himself would perform the experiment along side as a "control" as well? It might be a time issue since students inquire during the wet lab therefore outnumber the time the professor would have to actually perform the same assay in class. That would mean it'll probably require the professor to perform the assay outside of class time so maybe it is too much to ask for.
I think he can limit the amount of project he makes his students do. I think doing the biotech project and poster board project is sufficient already to help students grasp the material. Furthermore, I think he can put more information on the power points to go along with the pictures and graphs.

After Matt goes over some material in class, he asks the class if we had any questions or were confused. And if some people were confused he would go back and further explain the material.

No, he's too moody.
Yes, his teaching style is precise and easy to follow.
Yes I would recommend Matt to other students because even though he is a hard grader; he teaches the material in clear manner and relates it to life. And because he relates the course material to life, it is easier to recall most of the course material that was went over throughout the semester.

He is not pretentious. He is very real and casual, and that makes him more engaging and approachable. He also has great analogies for things. He really cares about the students and how we do.
Matt's strengths include his eager and enthusiasm on the subject matter. In order to increase class participation in lecture discussions, he took the time to know students by name and called on them individually throughout the course. He always kept the class aware of when upcoming assignments were due as well as reminders for quizzes and exams. His ability to relate concepts to things that are well-known to students served as a foundation from which students could better grasp and understand topics. Matt also took the time to answer questions to the best of his knowledge that students presented in class. The recaps at the beginning of lecture also served as a great transition into the class to prepare students for the lesson.

He always stressed the need for students to study and read outside of class, as this is a foundation course for many biology majors in the class. He worked with us a lot by providing assignments as extra credit that were not just easy hand-outs, but increased our understanding of the work. He is always available for office hours, and always eager and willing to explain concepts that students may not have gotten in lecture.

Similar to the lecture, Matt's strengths include his ability to relate concepts to real-world things for students to better grasp concepts. He stressed technique a lot in the lab, and demonstrated them to students several times, and assisted when needed in calculations.

Matt is one of the best professors I've had (including my undergrad time at a private university in CA). He explains topics well/in an easily accessible way. I like that he repeats things regularly to further reinforce the information. There was actually some overlap in the material that I was learning from zoology 141 and this course this semester and the way Matt explained various processes was so much more understandable and clarified my knowledge for both courses. I also appreciate that he continually reminds students of how what we are learning fits in to the larger, global picture and that our choices as individuals do have an influence on social structures and systems in place. I also think that the course is set up so that it is very challenging but simultaneously extremely motivating. I don't think that the bar is set too high and I appreciate that there are high expectations in this course because I don't feel like there is leeway to slack off. I'm constantly motivated to review material at home and talk to friends about what I'm learning because it's just so fascinating. Anyway, overall THUMBS UP. I have been recommending Matt to many students who are interested in taking micro and could not have had a better experience.

My favorite teacher and class I took this semester
I was at first intimidated by his syllabus. But I am grateful that I took his class. I appreciate the time he put in to making our class exciting, helping us understand difficult concepts, and applying them to our everyday lives.
It was awesome how many resources he provided. Especially the oral powerpoints, which was basically like being in class again listening to his lectures.
I wouldn't take his class again personally but no doubt is he an excellent microbio teacher

I went out of my way to take this class, my home institution is UH and I don't live close to KCC. I worked his class around my schedule this semester, and I'm glad that I did. Most of the professors at UH don't care if their students do well, so they don't put in the time to making their lectures clear, interesting, or understandable. More professors need to model their classes like him, if they would I think students would have a better understanding for each course and do better on exams.

Dr. Matthew Tuthill gave examples and utilities towards the various subjects throughout the course. Connecting materials with life scenarios and explaining why the material is important towards Molecular Biology. Very enthusiastic about the subject.

his major strength is exmapling with certain concept. he usually give us good explain and examples that was really helpful to understand hard concept.
He definitely is a great teacher and knows his material. He explains each topic very well and grades hard to make sure we learn. however, the exams are not hard if you pay attention and study hard. Mr. Tuthill gives it his all in lecture and tests and encourages us to give our all. He pushes us to our best ability.

He is a fantastic educator. That is not always an attribute found in a college instructor. He is sure to teach the subject in several different ways to be sure that students can learn no matter what their learning style.
He uses props to help explain cycles that go on in the body and have students actively respond during lectures.
Matthew Tuthill major strengths would have to be his knowledge of the course if you look at his powerpoints it has main points with key terms to know but everything else on that slide he lectures. He is also great at engaging his students and relating the topic/subject to life situations I can relate to.

Professor Tuthill has a great way of clearly explaining the microbiology in a simple way. Unlike other science teachers, Professor Tuthill explains things to us as students who are trying to learn the material, and not as colleagues taking a refresher course. He also uses very interesting and thought provoking examples that helped me understand and retain the material.

I found it hard trying to complete and review the study guide before exams. I thought they were basically over every concept covered in the book. I would suggest having a more tailored study guide that pertain to testing materia since there is no study review in classl. In my opinion you tend to rush through concepts sometimes. I would have appreciated more "stop and review" time after each important concept.
When we rephrases his exam questions, sometimes it is very confusing. Even if you knew you studied for his exams, he has his way of rattling your brain if you truly understood his subject. Not all of us in his class will be pursuing the field of microbiology but i feel like he wants you to learn everything about microbiology even the minute details which sometimes makes me not want to come to class to listen to his lectures.
Slow down a little. Some of us need a little longer to process the incredible amount of info that's doled out each lecture.
Review material more such that he can confirm that we understand what he feels is most important to understand.

He makes sure that if you can't make it to class, theres lectures online to review that day so you won't miss out. Also, he makes sure his jokes or topics he relates to certain parts in different chapters doesn't offend anyone.
He always responded to emails very quickly and was always kind and helpful when needed.

Dr. Tuthill gave us many extra credit opportunities. I feel that he clearly makes it impossible to fail his class because he provides many resources for us. He also has available office hours and responds to emails as quick as possible.

In my opinion I don't believe Matthew is the type of professor who shows concern. Either you make an effort and pass or you don't make an effort fail. He always said that this course "IS ALL YOU"
Matthew Tuthill would provide many opportunities to do projects and internships. He even promoted the Service Learning and STEM programs from the very beginning of the semester, as well as changing to an A.S.N.S degree. Tuthill also asked the class about its plans as far as jobs (as well as backup plans), and promoted health and science professions.
He sends us reminders on emails and makes sure he mentions it in class too. You can really see and feel that he wants the students to learn and get their money's worth. He mentions about peer mentors if we didn't understand something. He encourages us to go to his lab if we want to learn more. And he gives lots of options and ways on how to learn and study.

This is my first time to take Microbiology and as an international student i must say that i have never seen myself study this hard. But Matthew has changed and influenced my views, in a good way, about the food industry. It has actually changed my way of lifestyle in terms of buying and eating food. and i have appreciated his lectures especially when he talks about his environmental concerns here in Hawaii.

I wish Dr. Tuthill taught other science courses such as Zoology. He is one of the best college professors I have had so far.
I highly recommend this class to anybody thinking about majoring in any type of science field.
-tough class for it to be entry level -all exams are fill in blank, essay, and multi (yes spelling do count) -there are no study review in class so have good note taking skills -do all extra credit (its very reasonable and not too time consuming ) because it will boost grade -I wish I would have been warned about exam #3 even if its open book/notes it is still hard so take time to make detail notes about microbes -at the end of the semester some of the photos in lecture are stomach turing so beware

I wouldn't change anything for this class. It was well-planned, and the lectures and labs were lots of fun. I very much like the idea of weekly quizzes, as they kept me especially understanding all of the material covered in lecture.

He is always available before, after, and any spare time he might have to meet with students.

I would highly recommend him to other students because of his teaching style. He is able to take a subject that contains a substantial amount of information and teach the material in a relateable, and timely manner. Out of all my classes, this is the class that I have learned the most information, which also correlated with my other biology classes and better prepared me for those other classes, as well.
Absolutely. Nowhere else can undergraduates get this level of rigorous labwork curriculum with an instructor who understands and accommodates their challenges. He makes biotechnology much less intimidating than it has to be for students with no prior experience.

Keep up the good work! Don't be discouraged if students do not do as well as you would hope, because that falls upon the student to step up to the plate. You have a unique teaching style that anyone on any level of knowledge in any given area can listen to one of your lectures and completely understand every word of it.

Matthew Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher is that he really knew everything there is to know about microbiology. You could ask him any question concerning the subject and he could answer it.
He is able to intertwine current events into the classroom and apply it to the subject at hand. His slides are extremely stimulating and colorful. It keeps me interested. I never liked Microbiology, but once I took his class, I am able to enjoy it and want to learn more. Thanks to him. He has influenced me to learn and do more.
He came to class very prepared and knows the subject very well. He was clear about the topics and what are his expectations. He knew how to relate the subject to our daily lives which does to some extent help students retain materials. He involved student participation and made sure the students was on the same page as he is.He talks loud and clearly and paces his words or sentences.

His ability to make such a tedious subject matter interesting and fun without losing the fundamental components is one of his major strengths. He is well organized, efficient, and willing to go the extra mile to help a student. He encourages class participation without making an individual feel uncomfortable, and he is excellent at clarifying and making analogies for concepts that are hard to grasp from simply reading the book.
I thought that Professor Tuthill was a great lecturer. He really made the class interesting. I also liked the fact that he provided tools we could use to further understand the subject, such as online oral lectures, powerpoints, and worksheets.
He is an amazing teacher with, with his own style and approach to getting his point across. He has his own perspectives on certain subjects, and it able to justify his bias. I believe having a teacher think outside of the textbook chapters makes his lectures far more interesting. His tests are fair but can be hard. He will set you up to learn the basics of microbiology in this class.
He maintains an excellent pace during the course of the semester. I never felt like we had to rush through the material. Exam material is always covered in the lecture. All the material is accessible via Laulima.

Matt is absolutely passionate about his craft. If there was ever a teacher who was underpaid and under appreciated by his students it's probably Matt. He has consistent energy in all his lectures and pushes students to discover things for themselves rather than spoon feeding us. He does not lecture from the textbook or slides by the publishers. He makes his own slides. He is eloquent and never goes off topic and ties together all chapters. He doesn't just teach microbiology, but rather how it relates to our everyday lives (ie, meat products, government intervention, world history, big business). He encourages students to make a difference in the world and reinforces that idea every step of the way; he truly leads by example. His course is challenging and comprehensive. You really come out with great understanding of the world.

He always asked questions about the subject matter during lectures to 'recap', and it wasn't in a manner to make students feel 'dumb', but to make sure we were absorbing what we learned. He promptly responds to emails, and always offered resources throughout the semester to earn extra credit or to receive help. His lectures that were available online through laulima were a HUGE success in my success as a student, and I highly reccommend that more instructors provide this vehicle as a back up to their materials in class. He even provides previous exams as study guides for upcoming exams! :)
He was an amazingly talented speaker. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures because he taught microbiology utilizing many examples in life that we could all relate to. Also, it seemed as though he was very passionate about the subject matter and encouraged us as students to become more interested in the subjet as well. I would highly recommend Matthew Tuthill as an instrucor to future students planning to take microbiology courses and would gladly register for any other classes that he is planning to teach in the future.

powerpoints were really long (a lot of slides), some of the pictures didn't show up on my computer so i ended up printing blank slides, i don't have a solution, but just fyi. offer more points so that final grade isn't based solely on exams and a few homeworks...maybe add more homework? tests were a little difficult for a 100 level class

Dont be so picky and anal about spelling. I get that spelling is important but it should not be critical or crucial on the exams. Technically, spelling does not measure the knowledge we have about microbiology. If the students are able to explain what they are saying then the spelling is a minor issue.being a spelling anal nut bag is infuriating. I mean if you are able to distinguish what the word is supposed to be then be ok with it because it means you know what the word is. But, if u cannot not distinguish the word then mark it wrong. But spelling is not a huge deal. Also, it gets tiresome to present so much materials in one day. That is how students are unable to retain all the information because it is overloading us with so many information that we are unable to process it all together.

I think the worksheets were a bit of work. I took about 2-3 hours doing one of them. But I guess they are usefull as study guides. I think maybe involve the class more into the learning key points like the DNA replication exercise we had.
I would take the test out on all of the pathogens. It is great for the overview, however the test wasn't about much of the lectured information. Yes, it was graded fairly but it was just too much information to absorb. The purpose of the test was for students to study on their own, which we all did...but it was a lot to know.
