13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He really knows what he's teaching and he can explain the material in a way that is understandable. Very straightforward during class which is what I appreciate.
Dr. Tuthill has always did the most he could to produce the best in students performance. Dr. Tuthill is almost always in his office if he is not teaching a class for confirmation or help as well as he responds to his emails in a timely manner. These facts listed above definitely demonstrate some of Dr. Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher besides his knowledge of the field. Not only does Dr. Tuthill try to engage the class in the topics at hand but also does his best to make as many analogies as possible for the class to understand topics better and to pull real life examples of how they are applied.
He knows the material very well.Mr Tuthill is fair on his exams for the most part.
He knows the material well w/in his scope of practice.
Knows subject very well, offers many resources
He is the toughest instructor I know.
He knows the material very well, and is willing to help you if you ask for help.
Easy going and approachable.
His passion for science, his knowledge, puts information out in way that is clear to understand, he is organized and presents the material using key points. He keeps current and up to date in the material. Presents a positive attitude in general, enjoys teaching and it shows it. Is upfront with all rules, regulations and special requirements, does not changes rules or schedule without student consideration and participation.
He is not boring and knows stuff
He's knowledgeable and really puts a lot of effort into making a difference in the classroom and wanting students to learn.
able to teach at a quick pace and had laulima very well organized.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Emphasizing on specific topics that students will be tested on just because there is a lot of information that is shared in one chapter.
N/a
Do something about the online mastering material. The questions were poorly thought out and down right incorrect in some instances.
Offer quizzes.
More straight forward powerpoints. More frequent and shorter tests covering fewer chapters.
Make exams a little bit easier.
I would suggest giving out a study guide for each exam to give students a little better idea of what to expect for each exam.
I don't think it is in his hands because there is a lot to cover in class however, the tests outside of class were a bit inconvenient. And moving on couple chapters before the test on previous chapters were a bit of a struggle.
Please write the exams before leactures and base your power points on it. Make it clear what will be on the exam and what not.
I have suggestions for material that should be excluded from the class, but that's not a Matt thing.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He would answer all of our questions thoroughly and would be willing to answer questions after class.
During multiple steps of the semester Dr. Tuthill showed his concerns indirectly by referring to the entire class rather than the individual that there are multiple options if the student was unable to finish the course or was not doing so well in the course. He would always mention the dates that were coming up like the drop deadline and credit change to credit no credit option as well as auditing a class.
I think so. I think Mr Tuthill does the best he can with what he has to work with.
Offered many resources
First step, knowing all of our names.
He would tell students if they needed help to go see him.
Always available for questions and willing to help anyone that asks.
Always made clear wanting to help students, respects students and conveys this attitude.
Yes.
The classroom environment is very interactive and he encourages participation. He answers emails quickly and listens to concerns and even changed exam schedule to better accommodate the class vote. He brings up opportunities in different fields of science and encourages students to consider opportunities. He brings voting registration cards first day of class; talks about student debt.
Being honest by asking us about our concerns with course concepts. Asking if we understood his analogies.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes he is a great teacher that is extremely helpful if you go to the lectures. The class content is pretty tough but Tuthill makes it easier to understand.
Yes and no. If you are looking for an easy A then definitely not. Like any teacher in a "science" field, Kapiolani's professors definitely push you as a student to think deeper and more in depth as other colleges do. You will most likely leave the class with a great deal of knowledge gathered from the class but only by putting in the time. This being said you definitely have to work for your A in Dr. Tuthill's class like any other, if you want to actually learn the material then his class is the one to take. If one just wants to receive a easy A, go elsewhere.
yes, if you can dedicate the time for his class.
Yes
Yes because he knows the subject well and the intensity of the course may push you to study more.
Yes, if you take him, you will know the challenge and that would help you get better in life.
If you are willing to study hard, and stay on top of your assignments he is a good professor to take, you will learn the material.
Yes.
Yes. This is a hard course, they might as well have a good teacher at it.
Hard exams and you have no idea what will be on exam and what is not that important, but I do not know if there anybody who could teach that stuff better than him. Take him and study on your own because in class he will not point out what you shoul study for the exam. His favorite phrases are :" this class is hard and I am sorry"; "I wrote the worksheets around Christmas time at 3 am that is why they are not very good and you have to understand that". Otherwise he is an interesting person and hot too.
Yes. You will be very challenged, because his exams are hard, but you will learn valuable things.
Yes. He has a lot of knowledge in biology, mostly the cellular and bacteria parts so you shouldn't have a hard time learning those things from him. He's also very honest about our Current world situation and he'll kind of give you a heads up on what to expect from our careers and our government.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Awesome professor!!!!
Course was difficult and there was a high volume of information to learn by test date.
Nothing.
n/a
He is fair and organized.
Reads and communicates nonverbal signals and senses when the class does not understand. Looks at students when talking to them, in or out of class - eye contact shows real awareness and engagement. Makes an effort to get students to know each other. Praises successful performance to motivate future learning. Comes to class ready to deal with the topic.Uses class time effectively and efficiently. Highlights main ideas Uses instructional aids effectively Uses humor to help maintain attention Uses examples or illustrations -Relates material to the student's world or real life experience.
Matt takes a lot of grief from the students because they don't recognize the benefit of a professor that holds student to a very high level while giving them all the support they ask for so they can have an advantage when the leave college. I hope the administrators support him and recognize all he is doing.

This does not seem like an introductory course.

Showed concern for students outcome because when he moved around test dates when he realized people needed more time to study. Not because a lack of studying but because of the amount of material in a small time period.
"Few teachers are great; probably none is great at all times. Yet, many teachers are great occasionally." (Milton Hildebrand, 1973). We need to do everything we can to make these occasional times of greatness occur more often! "Matt" is a great teacher and fun to!
This isn't really a Matt thing either, but he encourages students to take salg and I think that benefits the school mostly. If he could give students extra credit for using brain fuse would be a good idea. It is such a fantastic tool and every student I talk to about it hasn't heard of it. They have helped me many times!!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Matt's strength is his unpredictability. I never know what he is going to say or do in class. It keeps me on my toes and keeps me very entertained in class. Matt does know the material very well but his randomness keeps me entertained in class and wanting more!
N/a
He knows his subject well
Matt is very passionate about microbiology. It shows in his lectures. He is energetic and funny.
Great knowledge about this subject. All of his information are updated to the latest information.
He has a very particular, interactive way of teaching. He had encourage me to take more micro classes.
Very very knowledgeable on the topic Speaks clearly and tries to breakdown all of the details
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I am a take home study kinda guy. I wish the chapter worksheets were all I had to study, but I found studying the old tests to be equally important. I guess I want it too easy ;P
N/a
Not everyone knows the information as well as you do and you need to actually keep that in mind when teaching and on tests
I wouldn't change much other than having more than just one exam prior to the withdrawal date.
His way of teaching is very effective for me, so I can't think in one thing that he should change.
Could use Laulima from time to time, or just for uploading grades
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Matt projects this attitude as if he is a cold hearted scientist with no friends... but when we fell behind schedule, Matt made major adjustments to the schedule and allowed ample time for us to be ready for the test.
N/a
He didn't
Matt's online resources (powerpoint lectures, study guides, previous exams) are very helpful. I felt pretty set up for success.
He give the students all the necessary tools and more to be successful in his course.
allowed students to come in whether during office hours or not
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes! I would recommend Matt because he makes class fun and interesting... not some dry book learning.
N/a
No, the course is challenging which is usually good but his teaching style as well as tests were too ridiculous to clearly comprehend
Yes. Matt takes a difficult subject and makes it fun, interesting, and relevant to everyday life.
Yes I do.
Absolutely.
I have already done it. Definitely a great professor, challenging but easy to understand and comprehend!
Yes. You will learn a lot! But you will NEED to be motivated to score well and fully understand the course
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He has a nice balance to his class. For an entry level class he can make the material harder than he does, but he doesn't. Matt keeps the level of learning not to hard but not to simple.
N/a
I really enjoyed taking his courses.
He has change my perception of microbiology. He present this amazing world of microbes with such enthusiasm that make the student crave for more knowledge
18. Other comments:

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He was very passionate about the subject, often supplementing lecture with stories and related history and media to link what we were learning with actual human and current events.
Dr. Tuthill really knows his subject. He's very informative.
Enthusiasm.
The organization of his course and the availability of resources to us, including lectures, chapter worksheets and old exams to look over.
He is extremely passionate about Microbiology!!! He is available for his students during office hours. He is always willing to help when we need a more in depth understanding.
Professor Tuthill is extremely knowledgable on the subject of Microbiology. He is a great orator--he speaks clearly and slowly so he is understandable. I look forward to his lectures. I learned way more than I thought I would and I his class has opened up my eyes to the world of Microbiology. I had a few unusual circumstances that came up during the semester and I felt his concern was sincere and genuine. He is very approachable in person and via emails. He responds to either promptly. His class is not easy and students need to put sincere time and effort into his class.
His knowledge of the subject he teaches.
Great enthusiastic teacher. Loved his lecture
he is very knowledgable about everything he is teaching.
He explains concepts and material well. He uses a practical approach and incorporates life situations, current news, and stories to make the topic clearer. He also puts up lot of resources that will help students prepare for the exams better.
He's very knowledgeable
His a very smart instructor.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
This class is kind of a test/exam based class. I suggest to give out homework to students.

No
Laulima was never updated, wish he would post our grades progressively as semester proceeded. There is no grades posted even when there's two Weeks left and three exams done.
I suggest that he give out study guides before each exam so that the students know what to expect. the exams were extremely difficult, especially since there was so much material covered.
The exams were very challenging. Its a lot of material to absorb and its hard to remember certain words for parts like fill in the blank. I think multiple choice exams with open ended questions would be fair enough.
None, His great!!
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
When a student was a confused, he'd think of another, clearer way to explain the lesson.
Encouraged participation.
By providing resources and being available to answer questions/address concerns.
Mat will help with any questions we have, so that we have a better understanding.
I had some personal issues throughout the semester-- I got an illness towards the end which was all distracting and challenging. I was in constant communication with the Professor Tuthill. He was always quick to respond and advise me on my best course of action. I also like that he provided lectures online so those who wanted extra study time or those who missed class could follow along. I also appreciated that he provided mock exams to prep for the actual ones. All very helpful.
He extend exams if the student need more time.
He was always available via email.
He made sure everyone understood by going over the concepts repeatedly, reviewing material presented before, and asking if we had any questions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, I really enjoyed his class.
Yes, I would recommend Dr. Tuthill to students because if people were majoring in Biology, his class would be really helpful.
Yes. He gives extra material that could be helpful.
Yes, he taught his material in a thought-provoking way and is clearly an expert.
I would definitely recommend Mat. He is one of the best at what he does and he encourages his students to push their understanding even more. Mat is AWESOME!!!
Yes I would if you really want to learn something new and take a class that from someone who will keep you interested and not bored.
He may be hard but he will blow your mind with interesting stories. He shows examples of the materials he is teaching.
Yes, his course objectives are clear, his a great lecturer, and he kept the subject interesting with side stories.
yes, I really recommended his class to everyone who have to take MICR130. He is really passionate and his lecture is helpful to learn microbes.
yes, as long as you're commuted to studying at least 8 hours a week.
Yes, if they would be determined enough to study hard and are interested in the subject.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Matt's major strength as a teacher was his deep knowledge and enthusiasm of the subject of the course which made it very engaging to learn more about molecular biology. He was also able to use that knowledge to build certain lab procedures which made certain protocols more easy to understand.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would only suggest that he provides worksheets based off of the lectures or the class book. It would really help with understanding the content more.
N/a
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He would email us weekly on what we would do in class, and provide alternative if our experiments failed in certain areas. He also was flexible in terms of scheduling quizzes and the final exam.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend matt to students who are passionate about biology, microbiology and molecular biology, since the amount of material that is learned from him will be greater than most. He is also a great teacher to learn from, making it that much more fun.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He's a great teacher and I encourage people to take him.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Maththew's major strength as a teacher is his understanding in the field of biology and his ability to use analogies to make content easier to understand.
knowledgeable of the subject being taught
He knows his subject very well and is passionate about it. Makes fun learning when the professor is passionate about the subject.
Professor Tuthill's strengths were that he would always try and use abstract or real life examples when explaining difficult subjects/ processes, he knew his material very well, and he would always ask for input from the students even if it caused an awkward silence.
Depth of knowledge. He is able to expand wherever is requested.
He has a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, however this sometimes causes him to go over the material faster than I absorbed. I found the most effective way to learn was to use the homework to espoused myself to the concepts first, then attend lecture with a basic understanding so I didn't get lost in the lecture. He really loves the subject matter, so that is also awesome.
knowledge of subject matter
he knows the materials really well
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would only recommend him to make quizzes every week based off of the content that was in order for individuals to maintain content better.
possibly use different material to help teach harder parts of subject
The only change I can ask for is to try and go over long winded and difficult sections that the students seem to be struggling in. Other than that, he did a great job.
I think it is great to say what you love. Showcasing your passion definitely encourages students to explore a subject more. However, I would refrain from expanding on what you don't like, or think is boring. Considering this is a beginning class it could affect a students potential interest in a particular area.
When there is time left in class at the end of lecture, go back through the power point slides and watch videos that got skipped, then briefly discuss the video; instead of progressing to the next chapter.
Slow down in class lectures; make classes more interactive instead of just lecturing the entire time; show some of the videos that are in the power points during class so we can get a better understanding of that particular subject, as well as ask questions if need be.
make the exams easier
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Tuthill showed concern for students by promptly asking if the content that was just provided coherent or not. If individuals had troubles in terms of biology, he would resolve them.
Fast response for emails and welcomes students to ask questions before proceeding to next topic.
He was always willing to stay after class to answer any questions and concerns. He probably was there for office hours as well, even though he is very busy, but I'm pretty sure almost no one actually visits professors during office hours in 100 level classes.
Provided regular information on standing in class. Encouraged students to watch their grades.
Matt regularly discussed tests with us and asked for feedback in order to better customize the tests in a way that allowed students to make suggestions for the test.
office hours; test study guides
he would make study guides for the exams
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend Mathew to students. He will make you think and work hard. His tests are brutal, and will literally crush those who are not prepared. However it pays off in the end.
Yes, it's a thought class but he makes it interesting and you really learn.
Yes I would because he knows the material very well, even if he has to read the text himself and prepare, he would go that extra mile for his students.
Yes, he is incredibly informative. He also takes note of the mood of the class and tries changing up the topic of conversation to help when needed.
Yes, if I think they can handle it. Many students would rather progress through the material more slowly. Although I understand that isn't his fault, it's still a very demanding course.
as a professor, yes, just not for bio 171. It is a general bio course but many questions on the test go far beyond general knowledge of a subject and goes more into finer detain of the subjects he find most interesting or knows the most about. Nice guy, and very knowledgeable, but would be better to have him as a professor in an upper level, more specified, science class.
i think so, but it is challenging
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Take him for microbiology and biology...you wont regret the knowledge that you will gain
Good sense of humor.
He is a very friendly and approachable instructor who creates a relaxed environment in class. This should not fool people into thinking his class is easy though. Students will definitely have to work for their grade.
I look forward to taking his upper level courses due to the knowledge he has of certain biology related fields.
he tried to let us understand the concepts

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He goes above and beyond for students even though he doesn't have to. For example, he graded our midterm exams in one day so we could see where we stood mid semester and know weather to drop the class or not.
He is very passionate about what he is teaching and it helps the student want to be interested in the subject.
He has a lot of knowledge on microbiology. He makes the class interesting and makes me want to learn more about biology. He's pretty fair and gives students the opportunity to do better in class.
Professor Tuthill made the subject incredibly interesting and gave real life examples for each of the topics we covered which was greatly appreciated. He was very straightforward about what was expected and he made a hard subject fun to learn.
Knows the material, presents it in an entertaining way, really provoked students to think about bigger issues, and the part the microbiology plays in our day to day lives.
Great teacher with lots of knowledge. keeps class interesting with facts and relevant current updates in the news about micro bacteria.
He knows the subject matter very well. He is very articulate with the presenting of that knowledge.
Approachable, knowledgeable, charismatic, and understanding
Matthew is a phenomenal teacher who really knows the in's and out's of microbiology. He is down to earth, practical, and his love for the subject is like an aphrodisiac.
Presenting us with a wide range of material
- Informative -Makes you think outside of the box -Looks at the bigger picture of microbiology
He knew the subject very well. Everything was straight forward, his powerpoints matched up to the books, and included life situations.
He is a very smart professor/microbiologist! His presentation skills is really good. He's funny sometimes which makes the environment more fun! He loves teaching, especially when he talks about DNA!
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None
Maybe add some more grades.
I did pretty well in the course, but I think his curving procedures would be better by doing a standard curve as opposed to the curve he does. In a standard curve you will always have outliers, and his curve assumes the outliers are a representation of the entire class, which doesn't end up always being the case.
nothing, keep it up!
Nothing. I didn't have a chemistry background before this class and felt like I was at a disadvantage because a lot of those subjects were skipped over and written off as to be already known.
Professor can be very opinioned and biased, and sometimes forces his thoughts unto us. It created a very inappropriate learning environment at times.
Please assign some homework or other assignments so our grade is not just based on exams and extra credit. Tests are hard, and I feel that we should have one class period to review for the test because it actually helps, and maybe grade on a curve. More than half of the students failed his first exam and that shows something. I think that he should take the time to make sure that students understand the material.
When discussing a certain topic, I feel like he's very fast at teaching. I suggest that he should slow down a little bit.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
by putting up his lectures online AND putting together study guides.
If you don't understand something just talk to him during his office hours or after class.
He gave us extra credit work and made science interesting by showing us ways it relates to our real lives.
Tuthill always made himself available to us whether it was during office hours or through email (to which he always responded as soon as he could). He also encouraged us to ask any questions we could think of and never made us feel like we had a bad question.
He was always available to answer questions, and he provided extra credit opportunities for us to take advantage of.
tells students to study and study ahead and telling them that the exams are hard. Exams isn't that hard! just study and pay attention and you do well
He was always available to talk. He supplied previous test and verbal lectures on laulima which were very helpful
Asked if we had any questions throughout the lecture as well as at the end of the lecture
He grades our second exam before the drop date so that we could see our potential grades
He somewhat showed concerned for students. He didn't care about the exams that more than half the class failed.
If students have questions, he is willing to help. When students don't understand something about the topic, he would elaborate it again until we understand it . Since this is a very tough subject, he makes complicated terms/processes simple. He gives a lot of examples which I think is very helpful.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, the material is readily accessible to everyone, they just have to put in the time.
Yes, he provides real world connections to help and aid with the understanding of the topic.
Yes, he's a great microbiology teacher and pretty fair.
I would absolutely recommend him to other students because he is great to listen to and makes the subject come alive and seem relevant to our daily lives.
Yes. Microbiology is so exciting. Professor Tuthill really makes the subject matter come alive.
Great prof and great lecturer
Yes I would, you can tell he knows the subject very well and that he actually enjoys it as well.
Yes, but his class is difficult!
The subject of microbiology is difficult and his class is demanding, but if you put the time and effort in to studying, you will do well. You are given everything you need to succeed through his lectures and handouts.
No, he enforces the ideas and opinions he holds to be true, instead of letting us think and choose for ourselves. The way he presents some information is not conducive to an environment I want to be a part of.
i would recommend him to other students because he sets you up for success. He gives extra credit and chapter outlines.
Yes if you can commit to studying really really hard for tests, if not then no. You're better off finding another teacher. Microbiology has a lot of information and it's hard to tell which information learned is gonna be on the test.
Yes. Because you will a learn a lot from his class. It may be hard to take his class but in the end, you will thank him.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
be prepared to never want to eat meat again.
I would take another class from him because he's such a good teacher.
He writes hard exams, but they are fair, and he does a great job making the material learn-able.
great personality!
He is a good guy that has a very good calm demeanor while teaching.
You are a very hard teacher. I see that you do your part in teaching and we're supposed to do our part in studying, but it's really hard. This class is more independent because it's a lot of studying. I think you should be a little easier on the students. Microbiology has a lot of information and you, as a teacher should make sure all the students understand and have the material down, and create a study guide on what really is on the exam. Make more assignments for the students. You make the class really hard.
The recorded powerpoint presentations on Laulima were very helpful!
18. Other comments:
Microbiology is a hard class no matter what professor you have, but I think Professor Tuthill is a good teacher to take the class from.
Wish I could take more science classes even though my major doesn't require. Mr. Tuthill was good at giving real world examples which helped make it more interesting.
I'm pretty sure there's a little easier way to teach microbiology and a way that can make students pass the class.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Extremely passionate. Clear and eloquent in speech. Ties in concepts/information about microbiology with other worldly concerns(i.e. politics, ethics, justice). Provides all of course lecture content on Laulima for student review. Writes tests in a way that ensures that students understand the course material vs merely memorizing.
holds students accountable to high standards as far as know the material inside and out. very knowledgeable, uses current topics
knowledge of subject
Friendly, kind, honest, puts responsibility of learning on student, great professor. will take again!
Matt knows the material inside and out. The way he is able to present his lecture is engaging and entertaining.
Very knowledgeable on the subject matter. Good teaching method.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I think that Matt should change the way he adds "normalization points" for exams. Adding points, based off of highest score in the class, to make it a perfect score seems to base "normalization" off of the highest raking person in the class. I feel normalization should be based off of the level of understanding as a class.
It may be helpful to offer exams in testing center to be taken on students' own time in order to free up more class time for lecture.
at times, because there is so much material, the information is one way, at a healthy pace, with minimal interaction of students. matt stops when a question is asked and everything slows down and the exchanges are informative. wish there was more of this, for example, asking if there are any questions, not only at the end of major topics.
curve exams
Probably a quiz after each chapter or so just to see how well we know the material and review what we got wrong before we take an exam. This will probably help us in the exam. exams as a check point on what we know is a big chunk on our grade and most likely hurt our grade. . .
I have nothing.
Allow more time for students to take in the information being taught, sometimes it goes by too quick to grasp the concept fully.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Asks if there are any questions. Offers office hours. Gives tips on how to prepare for exams. Gives tips about forming back up plans along students' education path.
available when needed, answered questions, gives clear instructions and asks for feedback.
extra credit
office hours, answers emails on time, talk to student in class
He was upfront about grades and concerned about students who were having difficulty keeping up.
Allowed students to speak with him with concerns, ask questions, and flexible with assignment due dates.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend sitting in on Matt's class, but would not take his class for credit. He is an awesome teacher however, his test are exceptionally difficult. Micro 130 is already a complicated course, and from the experience of having taken other professors for this same class I can say that you will likely learn a lot from Matt, but you may hurt your G.P.A. in the process.
Absolutely. Tuthill is one of the most inspiring and intelligent professors that I have ever had. You will work hard in order to do well on his exams, but that is what school is about... actually learning!!
yes, only if they are interested in getting the most out of Micro 130
yes if you expect to learn for yourself
DEFINITELY!!! BEST PROFESSOR!!
I already do. He is, by far, the best college professor that I have every had.
Yes, he is an engaging speaker on the subject.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I am grateful that he teaches as opposed to using his talent in a clinical setting
great instructor. very passionate about microbio
Professor Tuthill is great. I hope KCC hires more people like him.
There should be more professors with his passion for a subject. He needs to keep doing what he does.
18. Other comments:
none
not sure I liked the curve idea. rather not have one at all. the curve was only an adjustment so the highest score was moved to 100%. there were some students who were retaking micro130 and other students what had a B.S. the micro class before benefited more from this curve.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Explaining the subject matter, he goes through the fundamentals but also delves into the modern applications of the topic. An example is the rapid advancement of DNA sequencing technology. He also does a good job in proving extra material for the class for people who are interested.
Available out of class. Communicated the material well even though at times it was alot so it was a bit overwhelming. Down to earth. A Nice person!
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Refine and accelerate the labs procedures. The lab portion of the class could be accelerated and the procedures could be expected to be memorized before the class starts.
None
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Made sure we understood what we were doing, and the reasons behind it. He would go over things before moving on which prevented people from getting lost.
Made time out of class for problems.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Definitely! It was one of the greatest classes I've ever taken. Lots of fun and the small class size definitely contributed to the quality of it.
I would recommend. There is alot of material to learn but he will answer questions and is patient if prompted.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Keep doing what you're doing!
A very nice person who knows his stuff!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Dr. Tuthill provided positive feedback when necessary and assisted in learning development when necessary. I am the only one in this class... so Matt if you read this there are too many strengths you have as an instructor that I am pretty sure that I would cap out this review...
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None. Matt if you read this you are doing fine.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
I was the only student so... I assume although Dr. Tuthill had many concerns with my results, I did what I could with the data that was given. I do wish my pictures and data that I received were better though. But that's just how the cookie crumbles.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. Dr. Tuthill is a great instructor to have as he not only emphasizes what you learn in class but also gives examples of real world applications and makes learning easy and fun.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Not sure. Other than Dr. Tuthill should teach Biology 172 and 275 but I am pretty sure that he does not want to do that.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is very well informed in his subject area and knows how to explain complicated concepts well. He also made the information very interesting.
Able to provide analogies and stories that help to remember important and difficult theories and concepts. He is enthusiastic about the topic and leads engaging lectures.
He makes his material relatable
Mr. Tuthill is a very knowledgeable instructor & he was very good at explaining different concepts and processes so that I, as a student, could move forward & complete the homework assignments & prepare for exams based off of the lectures.
He knew the subject very well and was very enthusiastic when teaching. He help make current events and tell stories to make the subject more interesting.
Dr. Tuthill was very inspiring & explained the complicated subject in a unique way that allowed me to understand it better. I really enjoyed going to his lectures, he always had interesting things to share with the class. I definitely learned something new everyday. He provides us with chapter study guides, sample exams, extra readings about our history, and a lot of helpful resources such as lecture videos that helped me review the subject outside of class.
Very knowledgable on microbiology.
He knows the subject very well
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I think if we had some kind of review session before the exams it would have helped a lot.
None
Slow down
Nothing, he was a great professor.
Nothing
The summer class was very very challenging since we only had 6 weeks to cover everything. I would suggest perhaps having quizzes. Having 3 exam that were 4 days apart was extremely stressful & may be really tough for working students.
None
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He understood that we would not be able to cover all of the material in class due to his leaving for a week and the amount of information in each chapter, so he shortened the chapters we need to go over and took into account the pace of the class when writing exams.
He encouraged us to participate
After several classes, Mr. Tuthill reminded us that we could go in for help in his office after class & he said numerous times that we could schedule an appointment with him if we needed the extra help. During the course of the 6 weeks, he consistently asked us if we had any questions on the material we had just covered before moving on to the next topic.
He offers office hours and always offers help
He would ask the class after each section if we had any questions. He would also make sure we were paying attention.
Always open for helping students & he's in his office during office hours
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, he is a great teacher.
Yes, although he will push you and can be a hard-grading teacher, Matt ultimately wants you to learn the material and is enthusiastic to teach his students. He doesn't just want to tell you what will be on the exam. He wants you to learn things because they apply to our every day lives.
I would recommend him because although he's challenging, he's a great teacher
YES, he is a very knowledgeable professor who knows what he is talking about & he genuinely cares about his students.
Yes because he makes you learn and encourage you to think for yourself. This is a hard subject but he'll help you along the way
Yes absolutely. He is a great teacher & I learned a great deal about microbes, diseases, and brought to our awareness one of the major concerns with our food source (where our meat/chicken/pigs form from). It has definitely changed my diet & I now think three times before I buy products at the grocery store.
Yes, take the class if you really want to learn.
Yes. He teaches well if your willing to learn
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Amazing teacher. One of the best teachers I have had.
He pushed me harder than any of my other teachers have
This was a very challenging class but I would like to thank him for stimulating my thoughts, sharing inspiring stories & grasping our attention. Some Professors are quite bland but Dr. Tuthill was very passionate & his stories and thoughts were very interesting
Your test are very difficult, but pushes students to know the course subject.
Cool teacher

He really knows what he's talking about, very confident the way he presents his lectures.
shows passion for the subject area as well as students' learning
The professor would state real life facts about what is going on in the world today that's related the microbiology, which made the class really interesting. He also is very passionate about what he does.
offered help
Matthew Tuthill is a great professor! He is hard but he knows his stuff so he makes it interesting. I would have to wind down from my research methodology class before I got into MICRO. He definitely was able to keep me engaged. His lectures are clear and he tries to make us think by asking questions. His lecture style is great as he uses soft and loud tones to note importance to takes and make us listen. Because he has passion, it makes me have passion for subject matter. I am never bored or get tired even if I'm already tired. Class time goes by quickly. I am never watching the clock in his class. Extra Credit assignments are helpful and also broaden our knowledge and awareness. He is a great professor and KCC is lucky to have him. I will be writing a review on ratemyprofessor.com to encourage students to take the class from him.
He is very enthusiastic on the subject, honest on the topics he's going through, and encourages class participation to integrate the student's learning in Microbiology.
How enthusiastic he was during class.
He is very thorough while lecturing through the subject matter. He is very passionate about what he teaches and that reflects on his class every day.
Very informative Open for help
Very enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about the subject. He also links the lectures to events that happen everyday.
He can explain things very well.
He knows his stuff.
He is knowledgable in the area of study.
Great lecturer, very knowlegable
Professor Tuthill posted multiple resources for us to utilize in order to understand the material in detail. Professor Tuthill also tried to engage us in class activities even though our class was extremely boring and most were there just to get a grade.
He knew his topic well and gives stories to the students, which will help them memorize the topic more.
He knows the subject very well. He relates many of the concepts into everyday situations that really helped me to understand how things work in the body.
He is very enthusiastic about the topic which made us students learn better.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Wish he taught Micro 161 and 140
None.
Slower during class lectures.
Nothing. The class was great.
None. Although he really likes the subject matter of poop, something I would like a little less of, it adds to his humorous personality and character in class.
Assign scheduled dates for worksheets, not due all at once
No changes, class is perfect.
Pace of class
none
More Extra credit opportunities, the exams are hard.
Get rid of Exam 3
Nothing really. Everything was given to us in order to pass his class. It is up to us, the students, to take advantage of these resources and learn the material in detail and not just memorize it just for one exam.
Maybe have a study session or review before the exam.
I think he should provide a study guide to help students with the exams
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He regularly asks follow up questions during the lecture.
The professor seemed to really care about the students and our future. He would always try to get us to participate in class.
1) emailed reminders 2) open office hours 3) stayed after class to answer questions 4) made us answer questions in class which created a interactive learning environment so that we could ask him questions beyond lecture. 5) Extra Credit 6) Much much more!
He encourages class participation, and tutoring help.
He gave several examples for us to learn.
He constantly tells students to contact him in any means possible if we have questions.
Encouraged students to go to office hours Contact the TA's
Encouraged students to take the time to study after class, always reminded about assignments and exams in advance.
He asked if anyone had any questions
He announced several times about his office hours, the resources he provided such as on Laulima, etc.
He notices the students when they are missing.
By explaining after every exam that this is a difficult subject and should not be taken lightly. You need to study the material in order to pass this class. And he's right.
He explain the topic very well, it is not his fault if the student did not take notes. He have all the material prepared for the students to learn.
He gave us many resources that helped us study for exams and also put his lectures online so it could be accessible to us if we missed class or couldn't follow his fast-past speech.
He wanted us to learn so he made sure we understand the topic by asking us questions in class. He also asked us if we had any questions after each topic.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, he is very knowledgeable in the subject area. clear and concise when explaining complex topics.
Yes, he is a great enthusiastic professor and always kept the students interested in the topics he was teaching.
Most definitelyâ?¦. He is very passionate about his subject matter and teaches it well. He is fair. He wants us to learn and entices us to go beyond subject matter to gain more depth. His class isn't easy but I'd still recommend him to all future MICRO students. I wish I could take more class from him!!!
Yes, because he will go in depth on the subject of Microbiology and answer questions when asked.
Yes. He is a great teacher to learn from.
Absolutely, he is my favorite professor at KCC.
I would if students are willing to study up to 8 hours a week!
I would recommend Matthew Tuthill to students because the he makes the class and learning fun.
Yes because he explains the topic well
Yes, you can tell he enjoys and goes in depth with his lectures. Also, he likes a class with students that participate in his lectures.
Yes. He is a good professor but the area of study is just a hard subject in general.
Yes. The course in general is a difficult subject as with any science course, and his exams is tougher than most professors I have had in the past, but this is to truly test if you understand the material or not and not just relying on luck or guessing to see if you get a passing grade or not.
Yes, Microbiology in general is a hard topic, but professor Tuthill is pretty much fair gain in all his exams.
Yes. I believe he is a great teacher. He has really influenced me to think more about the world and how my own actions can help benefit others and myself. He made many microbiology concepts understandable by explaining them with real life situations. The only thing I would say to future students is that they really have to work hard for their grades because there is a lot of independent studying need to be done.
I would recommend him to students because microbiology is not an easy topic (to me) but he is very knowledgeable about this topic. Those who enjoy biology should take him because students will learn a lot in his class.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
You are an awesome professor, hope you taught Micro 140 and 161 :)
Very great professor. Would recommend to other students. Made microbiology fun to learn. Also taught students a lot about Hawaii's history in relation to microbiology that I'm sure a lot of us didn't know about.
I think I said it allâ?¦ KCC is lucky to have a great professor like him!

Thank you for a great class.
Keep doing what you do boo.
He seems like a very nice person! Cool teacher.
He is funny.
He is a good professor
If you need help or are struggling, just ask and he will help you. But you have to take the initiative to do so because it's your grade.
Please grade easier
Professor Tuthill is doing an amazing job as an educator and should continue to do so. I have learned an outstanding amount of information in his class from just a short time and I actually apply that information on a day to day basis.
He is a funny and enthusiastic young man.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Professor Tuthill is a great professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches. He is also engaging to his students.
He really likes DNA. He tries to have a learning tool for each type of student and we all really appreciate that.
He shared a lot of real world problems and experiences and ties it in to the lesson.
He was very eloquent and explained things to a level where everyone understood. He would break down complicated words that we did not understand which made it easier to follow along
He was very enthusiastic and knowledgable in this subject area. I felt that could go up and ask him any question and he would know the answer. He also made the material less boring and much more understandable because he would readily have analogies that were easier to understand. For exams, he would make it clear what was needed to study and this helped a lot because there was so much information to absorb when exams did come around.
Very passionate of his work
Sense of humor.
He provided many real life examples that helped me understand the information better.
He's very knowledgeable about the subject and passionate about his views.
He knows the material he teaches front and back.
His love for the subject and teaching it to others.
Good understanding of the material and explains it in a way that students can understand
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
He goes through the Powerpoint really quick.
More interaction in the classroom, some topics are snooze fests so it would be helpful if he taught them in a more energetic room of people. That's the beauty of having smaller classrooms.
Add a word bank to the exams for the fill in the blank questions.
He speaks really fast which can be hard to keep up with. Also, the chapter worksheets were due on test days which didnt really help me because i wasnt sure what i really knew going into the test. Maybe if he graded them ahead of time so we could see what areas we needed to work on, that would make it easier to know what you really needed to study.

Maybe ease up a little when grading the short answer portion of the tests. Or at least give an example to students about what you're looking for when answering the questions. It'll give us a clearer idea of how to phrase our answers or to include certain points in particular that you're looking for so that we receive the full credit.
None
Stay classy Mr Tuthill.
Study guide for the final because it's a lot of new information we're learning independently.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He made sure that we knew what was going on in his class. He gave us worksheets that would make us understand the lectures. Also he has videos of his lectures on laulima, so if anybody missed a class there's always a way to catch up. He does not let his students hanging. He make sure that we understand the lecture before moving on to different topics/chapters. I can't think of anything that he has a shortcoming with in this class. He is super helpful.
Made his lessons accessible.
He would answer question and explain concepts most students did not understand.
He would review and ask questions so that we would be slightly prepared for the exams. He also gave us extra credit work which helped my grade a lot
He gave us extra credit opportunities to help boost our grades and he was always available for any questions you may have had.
He had open office hours whenever the students needed it
Brings props in in order for students to better grasp information.
He provided extra credit work that will help students boost their grades if they didn't do well on the exams
He offered extra credit, extended deadlines, postponed tests and pushed us to study by providing us with chapter outlines.
Always encouraged us to use his office hours for additional questions and if we didn't do well on a test, he cared about having us do better.
Reminded us constantly of tips and dates for tests and extra credit. He also reminded us of the last days before you can drop the class without getting a bad mark.
Asking if we have any questions after a few sections and asking at the beginning of class if we understand everything.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
YES, because he is super helpful and a very brilliant professor. He makes the class really interesting. Definitely not an easy A class, but Mr Tuthill is a very effective and informative instructor.
Yes, if you actually want to learn.
I would recommend him to other students, but I would have a disclaimer. If you are a good auditory and visual learner then this class is very good, however if you are a very hands on learner then I would not take this class.
Yes, because although this course is a challenge and does require a lot of studying, you learn a lot. He obviously knows the subject VERY well and the textbook very well and teaches well. He has resources that can help you if you are struggling such as oral lectures.
Yes, he is easy to understand.
yes, he provided a good atmosphere of learning
Sure, for the challenge. If you can get an A in his class it is well deserved.
Yes, even though it is a challenging class, you will learn from a very intelligent teacher who is engaging.
Yepp. He is hard but you will learn a lot.
Yes, clear but have to work hard
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Learned a lot from this class, it was definitely an eyeopener for me. I thought I would just be learning about microbes, but he gave us so much insight especially on social issues that ties within the subject.
He reminds me of Scott Disick.
He is a good teacher and a challenging teacher but in a good way. He is very knowledgeable of the material in class.

I am seriously considering giving up eating meat entirely after taking his class. I also appreciate the fact that he shares so much of his knowledge with his students and encourages us to question what is out there and to think for ourselves.

He explains everything we need to know and organizes very well for the class. All the questions we asked during class, he answered super clear, never stop talking until he makes sure that the student surely understands all what he asked.
he is able to present the material in a way that students can understand... the material is very deep to begin with, so he uses analogies and pictures in his lectures.
Great lecturer, friendly, fun, fair grader, etc.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
spend a little more time on each slide during lecture.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He tells us almost every concerns directly and even tells us the concerns that he may face to in future. He was direct and clear all the time, everyone could expect what would we have to prepare next.
by reminding us when the last day to drop the class is, how our GPA would be affected.
He's genuinely interested in helping his students succeed.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, I liked the small class and the way he teaches.
yes, he knows what he is talking about... isn't a boring professor.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Certain chapters he was excited about which made me excited too.
- Brilliant, articulate, down-to-earth, funny at appropriate times - Engaging speaker, to the point where I wish that there were more "lectures." - Called students out on their shit - Grades work promptly
Precise use of word to define fixed definition towards ideas.
very knowledgeable, likes to relate topics to current events or everyday issues to encourage understanding, gets quizzes and tests back to you in a timely manner
His knowledge and passion
-- He adds humor to the class to keep his audience engaged -- He uses analogies to help students understand confusing materials better. WIth the analogies, the students can picture what is going on; thus, giving them a better understanding of the concept. -- He is very prompt and very reasonable. He admits that he is a hard grader but that is to ensure that students understand the topics that are being told.
Knows his stuff, very good approach to teaching. Doesn't put his students down and make them feel stupid.
We can have a sense of intimacy. He is very appropriate for a teacher. He is the best teacher.
Dr tuthill is a really great teacher, he takes boring, complicated, difficult subject matter and makes it easy to understand and interesting to learn.
- Knowledgeable - Professional - Made the best of situation after finding out late that he was teaching a new course - I enjoyed this course - Passionate about biology
He encourages class participation and he always wants to hear questions and/or comments regarding subject matter. Matt is genuinely interested in the material and encourages students to take an interest in the biomedical field. Matt is also accessible outside of class and I have enjoyed numerous conversations regarding my own research and my interests in biomedical science.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
I would have liked if he had followed the book more. There is a lot of material and it's difficult to remember the lectures accurately. I relied on the book a lot but it didn't seem to help much.
No changes for Dr. Tuthill. In regards to the class: - Smaller classes - Earlier class time, or at least have a class scheduled after the class, so going overtime won't happen. Or make the class time longer--3 credits? - Stick on a lab fee so we can have our own culture plates. I think the reason we had so much contamination issues is because we had too many people on a single plate. I understand that being green is good, but in the end, especially in regards to the lipofection experiment, if the experiment will fail because of a few careless students with less than stellar aseptic technique, we might as well spend a little more on plates so that all that lipofectamine, hygromycin, etc. won't be utterly wasted--having separate plates surely will increase our chances of success.
possibly creating a study guide of the most important topics that would be covered on exams
Maybe a small class discussion on the biotech projects
The class is sometimes too hard to follow.
- be more consistent with textbook. dont test on slides where there is no further explanation but the slide itself and what was said in class, in other words, material that is not in the textbook. - could have gone through some chapters a little quicker - ch 10 could have been done in two classes instead of three. understandeable, however, since this was first time teaching course. - should welcome feedback from students as a way to improve as a teacher. did not seem to be interested in feedback, or perhaps got just a little defensive about it.
I'd really have to strain my brain to come up with something.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
I had the impression that he enjoyed the A students more, and the students that were struggling or just average kind of got overlooked and were intimadated by Tuthill and the stronger students.
- Generous office hours, even when it's not officially his office hours. - Made difficult tests that challenged the heck out of us--made us try to do better. - Very attentive while we did wet work. - Clear and concise directions
Rapid email responds back to students, have a great range of office hours available to students.
made us aware of the drop dates, grades, answered questions, gave us assignments for easy points
He encourages them to go to his office hours or to ask him questions for clarification. I think this is important because he is very inviting and approachable. I barely talked to Dr. Tuthill outside of class but when I did, I gained so much out of it and I felt like I learned the concept so much more. Also, it was assuring to know that I was understanding the materials properly.
Always made himself available and would respond to emails promptly
He often asks students, are you okay?. And I really feel better because I can feel that he is thinking about us.
Constantly reminding us of the drop/withdrawal dates s we can protect our gpas, and allowing us to help make decisions as to when quizzes should be.
- always punctual. did not waste our time. was respectful of our time.
yes, he made sure he knew almost everybody's name within a couple weeks and always encouraged student interaction. I never felt uncomfortable approaching matt with a question.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would, I enjoyed how in depth he went about current issues and new breakthroughs in the field. I found it very interesting.
Absolutely. Such a huge asset to KCC. He could be at some med school on the mainland, but he chooses to be here. Students definitely should be more grateful.
Yes, he knows his material well and is able to explain to a student until he or she fully understands.
I would recommend him to students who don't mind a lot of studying and review. The info in this class can get really detail-oriented so some students may or may not have a hard time with that.
Would most definitely recommend him.
Yes I would because he is the kind of teacher that wants students to know the concepts and applications. Even though I found his class difficult, I learned so much. The things that I did not like in my gen bio or the things that I didn't think i would ever like, I forced myself to study it and found them interesting.
Very much so. Great teacher. Very kind hearted.
I absolutely recommend him to students because he is the best teacher! However, if a student has no willingness to study, I won't recommend.
Definitely.
yes he is a decent teacher.
Yes. He is enthusiastic with the material and he cares more about students learning the material than simply testing for the sake of testing. (Although his exams are not trivial)
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thanks for being awesome.
Thank you.
I like Dr. Tuthill. He was one of the challenging professors that I have ever had, if not the hardest, but the amount of things that I learned from his class makes up for it. He is a good professor and I am definitely planning on taking a future class with him.
overall good job for a course that he does not normally teach.
Great guy, thanks Matt.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
NOTE: This is actually for the BIOL 275 LECTURE--I mixed up the surveys...sorry! - Articulate, explains things beautifully and makes everything seem amazing and elegant. - Good philosophy for teaching - Writes challenging exams--which motivates us to study harder, and thus learn much more. - Stern, but nice.
Tries to have class end on time.
He has a sense of intimacy.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
(- You really don't need a study guide.) - Maybe have the bioinformatics project mid-semester, in which the preceding exercises would be due earlier (e.g. every week or two, versus every 2-3 weeks). It was difficult having to meet up with partners to collaborate on a project, especially when the project itself seems so challenging. - While all tangents that were embarked upon were fascinating, and really added to the material (particularly in regards to the biotechnology chapter, which took at least 2 weeks to cover), I wish there was a little more time to cover the final chapters on the syllabus. It's one thing to read the textbook--it's a better thing to hear Dr. Tuthill lecture on the material in addition to the book.
Better organize the Power Points.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
- Graded work promptly - Wrote challenging exams - Asked a lot of questions - Encouraged us to participate, or at least make use of his office hours
He scolds us.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Absolutely. The best hands-down.
Not unless you already know about tissue culture and the class is more like a review for you.
I really recommend him to my friends. He is very nice and he is a highly competent teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you for your wisdom and intellect.
He told us he doesn't like teaching tissue culture.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Knows the subject well.
Matt can relate the course material to real life, which helps the students better relate to it. He is mostly on time. He does his best to make time to see his students when they need help. And is willing to address the concerns of others.
He always motivate student to think and respond to question he ask His Quizes is hard but it makes me think better and understand more
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Teach upper levels because he has trouble understanding how a student doesn't "get" it.
I think he can limit the amount of project he makes his students do. I think doing the biotech project and poster board project is sufficient already to help students grasp the material. Furthermore, I think he can put more information on the power points to go along with the pictures and graphs.
Maybe it's too much to ask for, but in the laboratory aspect course, wouldn't it be a decent idea that the professor himself would perform the experiment along side as a "control" as well? It might be a time issue since students inquire during the wet lab therefore outnumber the time the professor would have to actually perform the same assay in class. That would mean it'll probably require the professor to perform the assay outside of class time so maybe it is too much to ask for.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He didn't.
After Matt goes over some material in class, he asks the class if we had any questions or were confused. And if some people were confused he would go back and further explain the material.
Always ask us questions
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
No, he's too moody.
Yes I would recommend Matt to other students because even though he is a hard grader; he teaches the material in clear manner and relates it to life. And because he relates the course material to life, it is easier to recall most of the course material that was went over throughout the semester.
Yes, his teaching style is precise and easy to follow.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
All the students deserve to be treated equally.
Hes a great teacher
18. Other comments:
When our experiments didn't work, I like that he explained what had likely gone wrong.
Keep up the good work.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
explains concepts well, easy to relate to, makes lectures interesting
Clearly understood subject material and knew of experiments/ideas/real world applications/etc related to subject.
microbiology in general
Very knowledgable in the subject.
He is a good lecturer. Dr. Tuthill is very knowledgeable in the course of cellular and molecular biology. He is also very enthusiastic about teaching the course.
He is not pretentious. He is very real and casual, and that makes him more engaging and approachable. He also has great analogies for things. He really cares about the students and how we do.
Matt's strengths include his eager and enthusiasm on the subject matter. In order to increase class participation in lecture discussions, he took the time to know students by name and called on them individually throughout the course. He always kept the class aware of when upcoming assignments were due as well as reminders for quizzes and exams. His ability to relate concepts to things that are well-known to students served as a foundation from which students could better grasp and understand topics. Matt also took the time to answer questions to the best of his knowledge that students presented in class. The recaps at the beginning of lecture also served as a great transition into the class to prepare students for the lesson.
Really made the lecture and topic interesting
His depth of knowledge and experience in the subject. His ability to relate the material, and relate to the students.
He is enthusiastic about the subject area and seemed to enjoy presenting the material to the students.
He covers the material with interesting updated research.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
curve the class
more extra credit
Clearer test questions
Please be specific on what to study for exams. Ambiguity makes it difficult for students to excel. We know that you are a good instructor and we want you to be proud of us.
Maybe not have the last bioinformatics project. It's hard to come up with ideas.
I might suggest possibly limiting time on quizzes in order to allow for more time in lecture.
Easier grader, if not that then give students more prep material for exams and quiz. Tons of material, the lecture/power points (plus reading the text for the material covered over lectures and power points) did not fully help to prepare for the questions on exams.
It was hard for me to gauge how to answer his test and how to answer them to his satisfaction.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
his pep talks after we receive our tests back..., make sure we understand concept
responds to emails and has office hours
Available through email promptly
He is always open to answering questions and teaches us how to think critically.
He always stressed the need for students to study and read outside of class, as this is a foundation course for many biology majors in the class. He worked with us a lot by providing assignments as extra credit that were not just easy hand-outs, but increased our understanding of the work. He is always available for office hours, and always eager and willing to explain concepts that students may not have gotten in lecture.
He did try to work with the class to a certain extent when many students were not doing well on exams etc.
He was accessible to us outside class in the office or by email. He was very willing to answer any questions.
He was very accessible in person and thru email.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes! he is fair teacher and really wants students to learn
yes, good teacher
Interesting and in gagging
Yes, because he is very knowledgeable in this subject.
Yes, because his teaching style is very straightforward, and his availability encourages students to be proactive with their ability to maintain a good grade in the class. He is a great example of an almost perfect professor!
i probably wouldn't recommend taking a graded course from him because he is difficult grader. I would recommend just sitting in on his lectures for fun. Makes lectures interesting.
Yes, he loves research and he enjoys teaching. Anyone interested in biology could learn extensively from him.
Absolutely. He is a very good teacher and the test are very challenging but fair and fairly graded.
Yes because he challenges the student to really know the material.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
his enthusiasm for the subject makes the material bearable
none
Fun teacher
He serves as a great mentor and faculty member to the KCC family, and I hope that my professors at UH Manoa will be half as great as and knowledgable in their subject matter as he is.
I think he was a good teachers for me and I learned a lot.
18. Other comments:

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very knowledgable in the subject.
Similar to the lecture, Matt's strengths include his ability to relate concepts to real-world things for students to better grasp concepts. He stressed technique a lot in the lab, and demonstrated them to students several times, and assisted when needed in calculations.
His knowledge and ability to force students to problem solve and understand the deeper concepts behind what they are doing.
He was very knowledgeable about the lab course.
He's on time.
His class was interesting so it kept my attention. He knew his material. He was available for extra help before and after class as well as during office hours.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Better structure
I suggest have a technique 'quiz' of students to analyze their lab skills in order to better prepare them and increase efficiency for their future experiments.
I think it would be helpful if he would tell students more hands on how to be more efficient.
Tell us what the project is sooner.
A little more organized. Some procedures could've been posted earlier when revised to allow for prep time. Also some procedures could've used more explanation.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Encouraged interaction
He was always willing to help students in calculations and understanding when called upon throughout the lab. He also encouraged students to answer other student questions in order to increase learning throughout the lab. He never rushed students while they executed lab protocol, and he would walk around the lab to ensure everyone was on task.
Very available to answer questions.
He explained things very clearly addressing individual concerns as well as the class as a whole.
He tilts his head.
He stayed late after the class was finished to help students finish labs. He was available for help when needed.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Interesting experiments
Yes, he is very approachable and willing to help.
Yes. Very good instructor.
Yes I would recommend this course because you acquire a variety of useful skills that you just can't learn without doing the experiments.v
Maybe, he can be grouchy
Yes. He is a great teacher. Has interesting lectures and labs.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Fun teacher
I liked the class and I learned a lot.
He is easy on the eyes.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
exampling, detail about subject..
the depth of his knowledge of the material. lectures are usually drab, but his are lively and engaging. he get excited about the material, which is contagious.
He is passionate about the subject matter, and he makes learning interesting. The material is thoroughly explained, and broken down into simple terms. I have learned so much despite myself. He uses analogies that may seem far off at first, but are spot on upon closer examination. The Matrix will never be the same.
Matthew clearly knows what he is teaching.
Matthew really knows that he is talking about, he gives real world examples and situations that affect us students and it makes the course easy to understand
He is very enthusiastic and puts a lot of effort into teaching.
how he provided great detail in lecture but at the same time he didnt make it seem boring.
He is very creative by using analogies to help his students understand the subject better. He's very clear and he's very knowledgable about the subject.
His teaching style was great. He knew how to get the students involved with the work and keep us motivated.
He knows the material in depth and uses outside examples for context which helped me understand this challenging material. He is also good at communicating with his students outside of class if you need feedback on something.
organized, clear lectures. knows subject well
Matt is one of the best professors I've had (including my undergrad time at a private university in CA). He explains topics well/in an easily accessible way. I like that he repeats things regularly to further reinforce the information. There was actually some overlap in the material that I was learning from zoology 141 and this course this semester and the way Matt explained various processes was so much more understandable and clarified my knowledge for both courses. I also appreciate that he continually reminds students of how what we are learning fits in to the larger, global picture and that our choices as individuals do have an influence on social structures and systems in place. I also think that the course is set up so that it is very challenging but simultaneously extremely motivating. I don't think that the bar is set too high and I appreciate that there are high expectations in this course because I don't feel like there is leeway to slack off. I'm constantly motivated to review material at home and talk to friends about what I'm learning because it's just so fascinating. Anyway, overall THUMBS UP. I have been recommending Matt to many students who are interested in taking micro and could not have had a better experience.
Prof. Tuthill knows his subject very well. He makes the class extremely fun using different metaphors for the students to understand.
He encourages the students to get interested in the course and involved social issue related to what we learn in the class.
Trying his best to have us understand his lectures by giving examples us students would get.
He looks and sounds like Chael Sonnen.
He really knows his subject well!
Dr. Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher is his ability to lecture such complex concepts with such efficiency, while staying concern of the students ability to grasps those concepts.
He knows the subject well. I thought this class will be very difficult because people were saying that he's very hard, and he is, but he's very clear and explain very well about the materials.
His strengths are knowing the subject really well.
He really knows the subject.
Very informed and passionate about subject matter
Dr. Tuthill is an extremely knowledgeable micro professor. He is challenging, but he is fair, and provides you with all the tools that you need to be successful.
He's very enthusiastic about the topic that he teaches. Makes the class very interesting because he presents the facts then introduces his opinion on the topic.
He presents his powerpoints very effectively and explains the concept really well.
He knows what he is talking about and makes them interesting by giving us life examples
He knew his subject area well.
Explain the material as easy as possible. The drawing do help explaining the materials.
He is able to take traditionally intimidating subjects and make them approachable. He made everyone feel they could understand class concepts.
very passionate about subject
He is a great instructor and believes in what he teaches
Matthew Tuthill is a great teacher. He is one of the best I have ever had, and without a doubt the best I've had while at UH. He really wants his students to do well and to understand Microbiology. He is able to relate everything in a way where we can apply it to everyday life. And the fact that he posts his lectures online helps out so much.
He explained the material very well. The subject matter was expressed clearly and in depth.
An expert in his area as well as others.
He knows a lot of information and has a lot of passion for what he's teaching. I can see that he tries his best to make the class fun and exciting. He makes sure his students know the material by making the tests a little more difficult, but not impossible.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
not really anything. maybe more gross pictures of body diseases.
Involve the students into the lecture. Teach in a way that lets the students get actively involved.
I would suggest that maybe before a test there is a review of what we have learned. this will help students get an idea of what they know and what we need to work on
The classes had way too much content each day and he would teach too fast. It was hard to understand what was going on.

sometimes the tangents about the meat industry/factory farming/etc were a bit excessive. however, this could be because i already knew a lot of the information. i think it's important for students to know though and i'm sure the majority of our class is unaware of the atrocities that occur as we remain complacent and use our monetary power as consumers to support inhumane practices.
Test to be equal on short answers and multiple choice.
Nothing, he is an excellent teacher for such a difficult course.
I like the way he teach because the PowerPoint helps especially when you listen to his lecture.
Nothing. I thought he was excellent, just difficult.
Slow down a bit and try to engage the student to learning the material from other perspectives.
Homework that is due at least once a week. More extra credit point oppurtunities
To make the material learned more relatable to students to make it easier to understand
Truthfully none.

None.
Add more detail to ppt.
Maybe do online/class quizzes which will encourage students to stay on track with the chapters and its subject or topic.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
memorized students' name.. and call them during the class.. :)
he asked questions of students, referring to each by first name, which is rare.
At the end of class, there is usually a line to talk to Tuthilll. He patiently speaks to each and every one of the students, and directs them to his office hours if time goes over. The dedication is inspiring.
Matthew would remind his students to email him if there are any questions or if people need extra help.
any time a student has a question regarding health or some other type of question related to the class he would answer the questions to his best ability
I'm not sure.
he would offer after class help and office hours help if ever needed.
He gave us friendly reminders about studying hard for his tests because passive studying will not do. Additionally, he would give us a fair amount of extra credit to help students boost up their grade.
He was open for appointments if the students had any concerns with the work assigned, grades, or other concerns.
always responds to emails promptly. available for office hours. also all of the resources provided online (laulima) are very helpful (old tests, camtasia if we miss class and want to hear the lecture online, etc)
He tries to anwer for any questions from the students
Always warns us before any exams or things that are needed to be done.
He ask if anyone had questions, need clarifications.
Yes, to an extent/
He talked to people who are failing the class and offer them a solution to get a better grade.
He showed concern by encouraging students to go to him and ask him anything that they are confused on.
He would tell us that he is available during his office hours and would answer our questions.
He apparently puts just as much work in as the students. He has fantastic oral camtasia lectures that are provided for his class on laulima. His exams are challenging, but he tries to provide his students with as many tools as possible, so that they can be successful.
He would frequently ask questions to get us the understand the material.
He gave somewhat some extra credit
he would reply to students outside of class with answers to their questions whether it was in person or through email
Try to make students understand the material as much as possible.
He provided resources online, and offered his personal time after class to any student who needed it.
always available during office hours
He always asked what he could do to improve test scores.
He always assured that we could meet with him before class to go over any material we did not understand.
Offered help.
He went around the room asking students questions and before he moves on to a different chapter, he makes sure everyone gets the material.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes!! because he has passion to teach his students and he wants students study more and learn better.. that's what I feel about his class ans his exam..
yeah. there is a lot of material involved, and he presents it in an attainable way. not an easy course, but he teaches well and if you study, you learn a wealth of material.
Absolutely. He is a fantastic teacher. The course might be hard, but it is well developed and presented in a clear manner. It's not just read the book and you don't need to come to class.
I would recommend Matthew because he knows this subject very well.
I would, even though the class is very difficult students will learn a lot and it will help with other courses as well
Yes, but he's challenging and the pace is super fast.
Yes because you learn the material without ever be boring. He also provides great resources!!
Yes, because you really learn a lot from his class and he also makes class entertaining.
I would, but you MUST work hard for this class in order to pass. You have to be comfortable with the material to understand what are on his tests. If you do not wish to work hard, then don't take this Microbiology class.
Yes, it was a VERY hard class but he does a good job at giving you all the help you can get if you are willing to do the work.
Yes i would, great teacher.
i already wrote about this above. in short, yes.
Yes, strongly . the reason is that there are lots of chances to study microbiology in different ways. His class gives ways to find right route for learning new knowledge in science.
yes! He is very passionate about his subject, makes it fun!
Yes, I would strongly recommend Dr. Tuthill even though his test may be challenging. He is an excellent lecture and makes concepts very easy to comprehend. He also as a good sense of humor, which keeps the class wake.
I highly recommend him because he's a very god teacher. He's very knowledgeable and the materials in Microbiology are hard but he clearly explains it in a very effective ways.
Yes because he knows the subject very well.
I would. He is a very good teacher and knows the subject really well.
I would definitely. But certainly they would have to be willing to put in some effort.
Yes, because he teaches in a way by which he explains the material effectively.
Yes, this is class is never boring
I would only if the student was willing to self-study to ensure a good grade in class. He knows what he is talking about
Yes, would recommend to other students. He is very enthusiastic about the material and know what he is talking about.
Yes. I feel scientific literacy is important, and that he is a good communicator for this area.
yes because you will learn the material
He was always there if I had any questions and was always very helpful
Yes, I already have. I don't think you could find a better teacher at UH than Tuthill.
Definitely! He is very passionate about microbiology, which makes the learning experience even better and more enjoyable.
Yes, only if they were hard working students.
I would recommend him to students because he's a unique teacher that really cares about the students growing in their knowledge. He's also very humorous and challenges us to want to learn more and ask questions if we don't get something.
yes
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
his lecture is fun and interesting..
great teacher.
He is a good teacher who knows the course and is fun
He is very intelligent.
Awesome overall Teacher!!!
Very good professor!!

if i had the time and money, i'd take another one of you classes. who knew microbiology was so interesting? i was a bit concerned that i'd end up being a complete germaphobe by the end of the semester.
He has enthusiasm for teaching.
Love his analogies.
Keep teaching.
He gives extra credit but you really need to study for his exams. It's not only about memorizing the materials but more importantly understanding it and be able to relate it in real life.
He is very helpful and can change your mind about the choices you make in life.
I was at first intimidated by his syllabus. But I am grateful that I took his class. I appreciate the time he put in to making our class exciting, helping us understand difficult concepts, and applying them to our everyday lives.
Over great teacher! A++++++++
I wouldn't take his class again personally but no doubt is he an excellent microbio teacher
If he can make his exams little easier, that will be great!!
I hope he sticks around.
very approchable
My favorite teacher and class I took this semester
I went out of my way to take this class, my home institution is UH and I don't live close to KCC. I worked his class around my schedule this semester, and I'm glad that I did. Most of the professors at UH don't care if their students do well, so they don't put in the time to making their lectures clear, interesting, or understandable. More professors need to model their classes like him, if they would I think students would have a better understanding for each course and do better on exams.
It was awesome how many resources he provided. Especially the oral powerpoints, which was basically like being in class again listening to his lectures.
Thanks :D
18. Other comments:
i would definitely take another course from him if available.
Thank you for all your help.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
he is very knowledgable about the course materials
Dr. Matthew Tuthill gave examples and utilities towards the various subjects throughout the course. Connecting materials with life scenarios and explaining why the material is important towards Molecular Biology. Very enthusiastic about the subject.
His knowledge of the field. But to a teacher knowledge is not everything. He also knows how to teach. Made things very clear and understandable.
Great understanding of the material, easy to understand, and easy to talk to. Knows how to explain concepts in an easy to understand manner.
He is patient when explaining some of the more weird aspect of this subject.
He is very knowledgeable in microbiology. He knows how to relate to the students and can have fun but knows his priorities like what needs to get accomplished by the end of the semester.
He explains the material to the students in different ways so that the material is well understood. He is willing to meet when his help is needed.
He's good at explaining and lecturing on a subject because of his interest in it.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
Nothing. Keep doing what ur doing
None come to mind.
The "cliques" in class were a bit distracting.
The quizzes were pretty difficult, although it is to be expected as this is a 200 level class. Maybe schedule the class a little earlier so that we don't end late.
The textbook wasn't really used.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He understands his students well enough that when student do not understand what he had just presented, he will represent the same idea but in a different manner so student do understand.
If u went in during office hours or even if u could catch him on campus somewhere, he would answer all my questions
Always checks up on students progress, understanding and ability to process the information provided.
He was open to questions.
Emails to keep us updated not only with class-related stuff but also stem center and other heath-related information.
He replies to emails immediately. He also ensures that the students are learning the real life applications of the Lectures we learn from class.
He pushed back due dates because we were behind. He was available for questions from students outside of class. Weekly quizzes kept us on track.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes he class offers students a lot of lab experience that you normally not get.
Hell yes. Classes were hands on, fun, material is of course hard but he tried his best to put into terms that we would understand
Yes, Matt is an excellent teacher, easy to understand and easy to interact with.
Yes, because he seems to take his sense of success from seeing his students do well.
Yes. He's a very great teacher! Very knowledgeable and very effective teacher. Difficult grader but nevertheless you learn alot.
Yes.
Yes, because he makes the subject interesting. Very organized.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Top 2 best classes I ever took
Very approachable teacher, understanding and smart.
He is approachable.
18. Other comments:
Loved the course and the lab work associated with it.
Even when our experiiments' results were a disaster, he remained patient while working with us to figure out what went wrong.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Encourage students to study, study, study in fun way. Very fun and interesting class mixed with textbook and present issues.
his major strength is exmapling with certain concept. he usually give us good explain and examples that was really helpful to understand hard concept.
he is strong in all aspects of teaching. He knows the subject matter. He knows how to make it interesting and simple to understand.
He knows the subject very well and is very entertaining. He is always trying to get stud. involved in active learning.
VERY knowledgeable in the subject, showed a lot of enthusiasm about the subject. At one point, I actually wanted to start doing lab research...
He definitely is a great teacher and knows his material. He explains each topic very well and grades hard to make sure we learn. however, the exams are not hard if you pay attention and study hard. Mr. Tuthill gives it his all in lecture and tests and encourages us to give our all. He pushes us to our best ability.
Matthew Tuthill major strengths would have to be his knowledge of the course if you look at his powerpoints it has main points with key terms to know but everything else on that slide he lectures. He is also great at engaging his students and relating the topic/subject to life situations I can relate to.

He is an awesome teacher! The best teacher I have ever had. He makes the material very interesting and he is hilarious so it is easy to pay attention and its fun to go to class.
He is a fantastic educator. That is not always an attribute found in a college instructor. He is sure to teach the subject in several different ways to be sure that students can learn no matter what their learning style.
Interesting, Enthusiastic, Funny
Can explain and give good examples of what is being taught
Knows the subject. Very good at lecturing.
He uses props to help explain cycles that go on in the body and have students actively respond during lectures.
knows subject very well
Professor Tuthill definitely knew the materials for this course well! I really liked how he always used his own words and examples to explain stuff. He made lecture class very interesting and engaging as well because he didn't read off the boring textbook.
Passion for the subject. :]
Opened new perspectives to the environment around us.
Dr. Tuthill has a great heart for the subject. Sometimes he gets so excited about the subject that its funny!
Tuthill is a very active teacher that can explain things in different ways that many people would never imagine. He also makes learning the material easy, although it is a lot of information to retain and apply.
he is really smart and explain topics very well.
He is very animated. So even though sometimes class seems a little long, its never too boring. He also gives good illustrations for complex ideas.
He know's the subject matter really well
M. Tuthill major strenghts as a teacher are Entertain the student while learning, she also compare real life to what we studying. He really know what he talking about and teach us fairly in class.
His knowledge on his profession and how he teaches his students for a better understanding.
He is very animated and it's easy to tell that he loves the course material. He makes lectures interesting
If you are a serious student who wants to learn more in-depth about the subject, then i would recommend Matthew Tuthill. He is very knowledgable with his field of expertise and you can see his passion about his subject itself. Sometimes, it is overwhelming to be in his class because he is just so enthusiastic about it and wants you to appreciate everything about microbiology. He explains the lectures very well, and he gives you lots of options depending on your capability to learn. Oral powerpoint are given if that's your preferences of learning. And he gives reading materials as well.
He knows his subject very well. He always answer his students' questions clearly. His class is fun.
He knew what he was teaching and he comes to class prepared to teach and he explained everything to his best ability.
Uses great metaphors to make the material easier to comprehend.
Matthew has great energy and jokes throughout his lectures. He is one of those professor who loves microbiology
Subject knowledge. Constantly works to get complex ideas simplified and communicated.
He knew his stuff.
Matthew Tuthill is a very knowledgeable and straight-forward teacher. This pushes students to work hard.
Interesting teacher.
Everything
Professor Tuthill has a great way of clearly explaining the microbiology in a simple way. Unlike other science teachers, Professor Tuthill explains things to us as students who are trying to learn the material, and not as colleagues taking a refresher course. He also uses very interesting and thought provoking examples that helped me understand and retain the material.
This class was too difficult for me to learn about microbiology. However, Mr. Tuthill teached me to understand easily.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
nothing
nothing , just keep going!!
Keep doing what he's doing.
None
none, enjoyed him as a teacher
Honestly, I coldn't suggest for Mr. Tuthill. He's a great teacher and I wish that he would teach the nursing program or other classes. I would definitely pick him again.
There would be no changes I would tell him to make. The why his course is set up is straightforward.
none
NONE.
None, hes too awesome
None
I'm pretty much satisfied with Professor Tuthill's teaching because his lectures are easy to follow, interesting, and engaging.
Don't change!
none
N/A
none
Maybe curve the tests a little more would help lower the drop rate.
Not much, just maybe just make exams a little bit less challenging for students =)
Change before the test should give us one class to talk about the test and what is gonnah be on it.
none
Slow down a little. Some of us need a little longer to process the incredible amount of info that's doled out each lecture.
When we rephrases his exam questions, sometimes it is very confusing. Even if you knew you studied for his exams, he has his way of rattling your brain if you truly understood his subject. Not all of us in his class will be pursuing the field of microbiology but i feel like he wants you to learn everything about microbiology even the minute details which sometimes makes me not want to come to class to listen to his lectures.
Exams are hard.
More class assignments to keep students from falling behind.
I found it hard trying to complete and review the study guide before exams. I thought they were basically over every concept covered in the book. I would suggest having a more tailored study guide that pertain to testing materia since there is no study review in classl. In my opinion you tend to rush through concepts sometimes. I would have appreciated more "stop and review" time after each important concept.
Review material more such that he can confirm that we understand what he feels is most important to understand.
Make things more clear and enjoyable for students. Not so much material on one exam.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
average of exam score was lower than he expected.
he usually has 35 students and memorizes all of students and ask question with their name during the lecture.
For one he discussed future options.
He asked questions and let us know if we had any questions we could ask during office hours, class or even after class. He also gave individual attention to each student when it came to grades and deciding wether to drop his class or not.
got to know people by name, for me, its a big deal when teachers make an effort to get to know who you are.
He makes sure that if you can't make it to class, theres lectures online to review that day so you won't miss out. Also, he makes sure his jokes or topics he relates to certain parts in different chapters doesn't offend anyone.
He shows concern for his students by post-poning exams due to circumstances and at the end of every class he reminds us to visit see him for questions or any confusion.
He always responded to emails very quickly and was always kind and helpful when needed.
Made himself available, whenever. Always asks if we have questions and open to any thing we ask him etc.
Give extra credits and be available office hours.
Professor Tuthill showed concern for students by always reminding us to study, study, study. He also upgrades us about our grades once in a while to show how we're doing. He is also available at his office whenever we needed him.
Always offered help in/out of class Constantly quizzed the class (kept us on our toes) Kept things interesting Clear outline of how to manage the heavy load of material
He asked us to think for ourselves.
Dr. Tuthill gave us many extra credit opportunities. I feel that he clearly makes it impossible to fail his class because he provides many resources for us. During class, he uses really great analogies to help us understand the material more clearly. Since he know that the material is hard, he provides online lectures of his power points. He also has available office hours and responds to emails as quick as possible.
i think so
He was always very quick to respond to emails. He also knew all of our names in a short amount of time.
Always remind students about certain deadlines, and sends out scholarship link opportunities through email
From what I notice show concern for student are how can we pass the class and how can we improve our study if we fail the first time.
He emailed his students for reminders on exam dates and assignments. He also replies to his students' emails within 24 hours.
He sends us reminders on emails and makes sure he mentions it in class too. You can really see and feel that he wants the students to learn and get their money's worth. He mentions about peer mentors if we didn't understand something. He encourages us to go to his lab if we want to learn more. And he gives lots of options and ways on how to learn and study.
He encourages his students to participate.
He gave us oral power points on laulima and he also teaches at a reasonable pace so that it is easy for students to learn.
He spoke with them after class and emailed them about upcoming exams, events, and opportunities.
In my opinion I don't believe Matthew is the type of professor who shows concern. Either you make an effort and pass or you don't make an effort fail. He always said that this course "IS ALL YOU"
Forwards job/experience opportunities and direction in the related field.
Not sure.
Matthew Tuthill would provide many opportunities to do projects and internships. He even promoted the Service Learning and STEM programs from the very beginning of the semester, as well as changing to an A.S.N.S degree. Tuthill also asked the class about its plans as far as jobs (as well as backup plans), and promoted health and science professions.
Great resources
He reminds us his office hours and emails us helpful tips for exams.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Definitely. He is the most wonderful teacher that I've ever had. I can tell he is doing his best at each lecture, so that students can learn things.
Yes, I will recommend him to my friends because Matthew knew his subject very well and he really helps me out a lot. I hope that other professor should act like him.
I would absolutely recommend him.
Yes because his lectures keep you awake and he teaches in a way that makes it easy to learn. He doesn't just read off of slides and read straight from the book. He actually puts time into his lectures instead of being boring and taking the easy way out.
Yes, the subject is difficult, but he provides you with all the answers. Studying is heavily recommended though. Very passionate about his work, it shows in his lectures, it definitely made class much more enjoyable
Yes!!!!!! He's a great teacher and I would definitely have him again if he taught a different course.
Yes, i would recommend matthew tuthill to other students because students WILL LEARN. I would though tell them to stay on task to study because his exams are no walk in the park.
YES! I learned a lot from his class.
Yes, no doubt. If I had had the recommendation of his class before my current course load I believe I would have had a better foundation and ability to succeed in them.
Heck yes! Hes a super cool teacher, best I ever had in a while. Class was super interesting, very fun. Always made me want to show up to every lecture.
Yes, good professor.
yes very challenging
Yes! Though I didn't do very well on my exams, i still learned a lot from him. His lectures are very informative and fun!
Yes because he's a great teacher that knows how to filter the material and knows/wants to help
Yes, due to the facts that he gives a lot of information.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Tuthill to students who really want to learn the subject. He's a great professor and you will learn. In the beginning of the semester, I thought I was going to die taking this class, but I actually had a great time being in this class.
Yes I would recommend him to other students. I would recommend him because his teaching methods are good. Although it may be a lot of information to retain, he makes it interesting and refers back to past materials.
yes, because you will really learn from this class.
Yes! If their willing to do the work. Micros never easy. But he does a good job in helping you remember main topics.
Yes, if they want to learn the subject Mr. Tuthill is the right professor.
I would recomment M. Tuthill to students because I can gaurantee they will learn alot and youll never regret staying in class with him.
Yes, if they are willing to study HARD.
I would if you don't mind putting in lots of extra time in to study
I would recommend him to students who are very serious about studying. His class is not an easy A, you have to work hard for it. And for those students who wants to pursue the field of microbiology and wants to further enhance their skills and knowledge then i would recommend Matthew Tuthill.
Yes, because he knows his subject. He is really excited about learning more about microbiology even though he already knows so much about it.
Yes, if they were interested in MicroBiology because he really knows what he is talking about and he even works in the field so it would be very interesting for someone who was interested in MicroBiology.
Yes, because he obviously knows the material but also explains it in a way for others to understand.
I would recommend this course ONLY to someone who have at least 10 hours of study time a week or who is familiar with microbiology
Yes. This is course has difficult subject matter. If any student has the skills/abilities to learn it, they will through him.
No, he didn't really teach that well. Too much material on tests.
Though his class may be difficult at times, Tuthill is a great teacher. He gives many resources and can be easily contacted to answer questions or help out.
Yes
YES! It's a tough course, but Professor Tuthill helps make it easier to understand. You will definitely feel like you learned and understand the material taught in the class.
Yes, I would, because I could deepen of knowledge about basic microbiology.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
other teacher should learn from him. The lecture recording posted on Laulima was really helpful because we could listen to the lecture as much as we want until we understand.
He is what every teacher should be.
Also applies microbiology to real life situations. It was not just a class with text book teaching me, there was an actual teacher who reached. haha
youre an awesome teacher!! Thank you for pushing my brain past its limits :)
I enjoyed his class very much and wish he was a going to be a teacher for nursing. He pushed me to my best ability and made learning SO much fun!
He is very enthusiastic and I can see his fascination of the subject which keeps me not only awake but interested as well
Hes hot.
He deserves a raise and a vacation.
None
I really liked how Professor Tuthill uploads all of his lectures online because when we couldn't attend class, we still had access to his lectures.
If only he taught every other science course :]
Thank you for breaking down the subject so well that I can really understand it. I truly learned so much from this class. Also thank you for teaching me how to be responsible for my own learning.
he also needs to get out there and enjoy life..peace dr. Matt
He's pretty funny! You can tell he likes what he's teaching. He honestly has made me very interested in the subject!
Mr. Tuthill is a good professor, great and interesting discussions, exams are just a little tough, no actually their hardcore.
I would say that He is Professional Science teacher.

This is my first time to take Microbiology and as an international student i must say that i have never seen myself study this hard. But Matthew has changed and influenced my views, in a good way, about the food industry. It has actually changed my way of lifestyle in terms of buying and eating food. and i have appreciated his lectures especially when he talks about his environmental concerns here in Hawaii.
He is the best science teacher I ever had.
Funny and real personality. Speaks to us as if we were all peers.
He is one tough professor but it will make you a better student at the end.
Personable, and infectious enthusiasm for the subject.
Matthew Tuthill is a nice guy, and great teacher. I only wish he was teaching or the lab (Microbiology 140)
Great instructor!
Thank you for teaching me.
18. Other comments:
I'm going to miss his class.
Good.
I'll see you around campus Mr. Tuthill. But only for a year and a half because I'm going to Cali *wink*
-Mrs Corn
I wish Dr. Tuthill taught other science courses such as Zoology. He is one of the best college professors I have had so far.
i enjoy your class...
great, funny guy.

I highly recommend this class to anybody thinking about majoring in any type of science field.
-tough class for it to be entry level -all exams are fill in blank, essay, and multi (yes spelling do count) -there are no study review in class so have good note taking skills -do all extra credit (its very reasonable and not too time consuming ) because it will boost grade -I wish I would have been warned about exam #3 even if its open book/notes it is still hard so take time to make detail notes about microbes -at the end of the semester some of the photos in lecture are stomach turing so beware

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
His knowledge of the material that is being presented and the application it has in the real situations. Encourages collaborative learning during class by giving you the tools that you need and allowing you to learn by your own successes and failures
The way he guides activities while encouraging independent thinking.
He is able to use abalogies that we as students can relate to in order to better understand the material.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
require checkpoints for final lab report; this would both help students stay on track and make sure students know what is happening at each point of the lab
I wouldn't change anything for this class. It was well-planned, and the lectures and labs were lots of fun. I very much like the idea of weekly quizzes, as they kept me especially understanding all of the material covered in lecture.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Flexibility in laying out the course's schedule according to students' input.
He is always available before, after, and any spare time he might have to meet with students.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Absolutely. Nowhere else can undergraduates get this level of rigorous labwork curriculum with an instructor who understands and accommodates their challenges. He makes biotechnology much less intimidating than it has to be for students with no prior experience.
I would highly recommend him to other students because of his teaching style. He is able to take a subject that contains a substantial amount of information and teach the material in a relateable, and timely manner. Out of all my classes, this is the class that I have learned the most information, which also correlated with my other biology classes and better prepared me for those other classes, as well.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
He displays genuine passion for student's learning.
Keep up the good work! Don't be discouraged if students do not do as well as you would hope, because that falls upon the student to step up to the plate. You have a unique teaching style that anyone on any level of knowledge in any given area can listen to one of your lectures and completely understand every word of it.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is great teacher, made me to think more and get involved. I even changed my major because how he made this course interesting.
great explanations and interesting lectures
kept lecture interesting w/ stories relevant to the material, he was enthusiastic and encouraged student participation by calling on students and getting them involved in his examples
He kept the subject interesting and knew what he was talking about without referrinig to the text too much.
Matthew Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher is that he really knew everything there is to know about microbiology. You could ask him any question concerning the subject and he could answer it.
He is able to intertwine current events into the classroom and apply it to the subject at hand. His slides are extremely stimulating and colorful. It keeps me interested. I never liked Microbiology, but once I took his class, I am able to enjoy it and want to learn more. Thanks to him. He has influenced me to learn and do more.
He came to class very prepared and knows the subject very well. He was clear about the topics and what are his expectations. He knew how to relate the subject to our daily lives which does to some extent help students retain materials. He involved student participation and made sure the students was on the same page as he is.He talks loud and clearly and paces his words or sentences.
His strength is that he can give student an easy explanation with an easy example relating to hard subject.
Very detailed! Love it!
Dr. Matthew knew the area very well and is very knowledgeable.
He maintains an excellent pace during the course of the semester. I never felt like we had to rush through the material. Exam material is always covered in the lecture. All the material is accessible via Laulima.
He is very knowledgeable and makes the class interesting.
He was an amazingly talented speaker. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures because he taught microbiology utilizing many examples in life that we could all relate to. Also, it seemed as though he was very passionate about the subject matter and encouraged us as students to become more interested in the subjet as well. I would highly recommend Matthew Tuthill as an instrucor to future students planning to take microbiology courses and would gladly register for any other classes that he is planning to teach in the future.
He is an amazing teacher with, with his own style and approach to getting his point across. He has his own perspectives on certain subjects, and it able to justify his bias. I believe having a teacher think outside of the textbook chapters makes his lectures far more interesting. His tests are fair but can be hard. He will set you up to learn the basics of microbiology in this class.
His ability to make such a tedious subject matter interesting and fun without losing the fundamental components is one of his major strengths. He is well organized, efficient, and willing to go the extra mile to help a student. He encourages class participation without making an individual feel uncomfortable, and he is excellent at clarifying and making analogies for concepts that are hard to grasp from simply reading the book.
I thought that Professor Tuthill was a great lecturer. He really made the class interesting. I also liked the fact that he provided tools we could use to further understand the subject, such as online oral lectures, powerpoints, and worksheets.
Matt is absolutely passionate about his craft. If there was ever a teacher who was underpaid and under appreciated by his students it's probably Matt. He has consistent energy in all his lectures and pushes students to discover things for themselves rather than spoon feeding us. He does not lecture from the textbook or slides by the publishers. He makes his own slides. He is eloquent and never goes off topic and ties together all chapters. He doesn't just teach microbiology, but rather how it relates to our everyday lives (ie, meat products, government intervention, world history, big business). He encourages students to make a difference in the world and reinforces that idea every step of the way; he truly leads by example. His course is challenging and comprehensive. You really come out with great understanding of the world.
Passion for the subject. Motivation to impact students on a personal level.
knowledge of the subject
He always asked questions about the subject matter during lectures to 'recap', and it wasn't in a manner to make students feel 'dumb', but to make sure we were absorbing what we learned. He promptly responds to emails, and always offered resources throughout the semester to earn extra credit or to receive help. His lectures that were available online through laulima were a HUGE success in my success as a student, and I highly reccommend that more instructors provide this vehicle as a back up to their materials in class. He even provides previous exams as study guides for upcoming exams! :)
He is very knowledgeable and make learning fun. Also, I ilke how he tries to relate microbiology to other situation just so the student can make a connection.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None. Perfect teacher.
none.
powerpoints were really long (a lot of slides), some of the pictures didn't show up on my computer so i ended up printing blank slides, i don't have a solution, but just fyi. offer more points so that final grade isn't based solely on exams and a few homeworks...maybe add more homework? tests were a little difficult for a 100 level class
None
N/a.
Wish he would leave some of his slides up for more than a few seconds.
Dont be so picky and anal about spelling. I get that spelling is important but it should not be critical or crucial on the exams. Technically, spelling does not measure the knowledge we have about microbiology. If the students are able to explain what they are saying then the spelling is a minor issue.being a spelling anal nut bag is infuriating. I mean if you are able to distinguish what the word is supposed to be then be ok with it because it means you know what the word is. But, if u cannot not distinguish the word then mark it wrong. But spelling is not a huge deal. Also, it gets tiresome to present so much materials in one day. That is how students are unable to retain all the information because it is overloading us with so many information that we are unable to process it all together.
Make more extra credit opportunities for those who isn't doing the Service Learning.
I am not a huge fan of open book exams.
None
Perhaps shorter chapter summary worksheets. Some of them took too long to complete and somewhat made it difficult for me to focus on my other classes during the semester.
I would take the test out on all of the pathogens. It is great for the overview, however the test wasn't about much of the lectured information. Yes, it was graded fairly but it was just too much information to absorb. The purpose of the test was for students to study on their own, which we all did...but it was a lot to know.
