13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

He is very enthusiastic and puts a lot of effort into teaching. the depth of his knowledge of the material. lectures are usually drab, but his are lively and engaging. he get excited about the material, which is contagious. He knows the subject well. I thought this class will be very difficult because people were saying that he's very hard, and he is, but he's very clear and explain very well about the materials. Matthew really knows that he is talking about, he gives real world examples and situations that affect us students and it makes the course easy to understand He is passionate about the subject matter, and he makes learning interesting. The material is thoroughly explained, and broken down into simple terms. I have learned so much despite myself. He uses analogies that may seem far off at first, but are spot on upon closer examination. The Matrix will never be the same. His strengths are knowing the subject really well. He really knows his subject well! He encourages the students to get interested in the course and involved social issue related to what we learn in the class. Matt is one of the best professors I've had (including my undergrad time at a private university in CA). He explains topics well/in an easily accessible way. I like that he repeats things regularly to further reinforce the information. There was actually some overlap in the material that I was learning from zoology 141 and this course this semester and the way Matt explained various processes was so much more understandable and clarified my knowledge for both courses. I also appreciate that he continually reminds students of how what we are learning fits in to the larger, global picture and that our choices as individuals do have an influence on social structures and systems in place. I also think that the course is set up so that it is very challenging but simultaneously extremely motivating. I don't think that the bar is set too high and I appreciate that there are high expectations in this course because I don't feel like there is leeway to slack off. I'm constantly motivated to review material at home and talk to friends about what I'm learning because it's just so fascinating. Anyway, overall THUMBS UP. I have been recommending Matt to many students who are interested in taking micro and could not have had a better experience. how he provided great detail in lecture but at the same time he didnt make it seem boring. He looks and sounds like Chael Sonnen. His teaching style was great. He knew how to get the students involved with the work and keep us motivated. exampling, detail about subject.. Dr. Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher is his ability to lecture such complex concepts with such efficiency, while staying concern of the students ability to grasps those concepts. Trying his best to have us understand his lectures by giving examples us students would get. He knows the material in depth and uses outside examples for context which helped me understand this challenging material. He is also good at communicating with his students outside of class if you need feedback on something. organized, clear lectures. knows subject well He is very creative by using analogies to help his students understand the subject better. He's very clear and he's very knowledgable about the subject. Matthew clearly knows what he is teaching. He really knows the subject. Prof. Tuthill knows his subject very well. He makes the class extremely fun using different metaphors for the students to understand. He knows what he is talking about and makes them interesting by giving us life examples An expert in his area as well as others. Matthew Tuthill is a great teacher. He is one of the best I have ever had, and without a doubt the best I've had while at UH. He really wants his students to do well and to understand Microbiology. He is able to relate everything in a way where we can apply it to everyday life. And the fact that he posts his lectures online helps out so much. very passionate about subject He knew his subject area well. Dr. Tuthill is an extremely knowledgeable micro professor. He is challenging, but he is fair, and provides you with all the tools that you need to be successful. He knows a lot of information and has a lot of passion for what he's teaching. I can see that he tries his best to make the class fun and exciting. He makes sure his students know the material by making the tests a little more difficult, but not impossible. He explained the material very well. The subject matter was expressed clearly and in depth. He is a great instructor and believes in what he teaches He is able to take traditionally intimidating subjects and make them approachable. He made everyone feel they could understand class concepts. Explain the material as easy as possible. The drawing do help explaining the materials. He presents his powerpoints very effectively and explains the concept really well. He's very enthusiastic about the topic that he teaches. Makes the class very interesting because he presents the facts then introduces his opinion on the topic. Very informed and passionate about subject matter

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

The classes had way too much content each day and he would teach too fast. It was hard to understand what was going on. not really anything. maybe more gross pictures of body diseases. I like the way he teach because the PowerPoint helps especially when you listen to his lecture. I would suggest that maybe before a test there is a review of what we have learned. this will help students get an idea of what they know and what we need to work on Test to be equal on short answers and multiple choice. sometimes the tangents about the meat industry/factory farming/etc were a bit excessive. however, this could be because i already knew a lot of the information. i think it's important for students to know though and i'm sure the majority of our class is unaware of the atrocities that occur as we remain complacent and use our monetary power as consumers to support inhumane practices. none N/A Nothing, he is an excellent teacher for such a difficult course. none N/A Involve the students into the lecture. Teach in a way that lets the students get actively involved. Nothing. I thought he was excellent, just difficult. Homework that is due at least once a week. More extra credit point oppurtunities Add more detail to ppt. None. none To make the material learned more relatable to students to make it easier to understand Maybe do online/class quizzes which will encourage students to stay on track with the chapters and its subject or topic. None. Truthfully none. Slow down a bit and try to engage the student to learning the material from other perspectives.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

I'm not sure. he asked questions of students, referring to each by first name, which is rare. He talked to people who are failing the class and offer them a solution to get a better grade. any time a student has a question regarding health or some other type of question related to the class he would answer the questions to his best ability At the end of class, there is usually a line to talk to Tuthilll. He patiently speaks to each and every one of the students, and directs them to his office hours if time goes over. The dedication is inspiring. He showed concern by encouraging students to go to him and ask him anything that they are confused on. He ask if anyone had questions, need clarifications. He tries to anwer for any questions from the students always responds to emails promptly. available for office hours. also all of the resources provided online (laulima) are very helpful (old tests, camtasia if we miss class and want to hear the lecture online, etc) he would offer after class help and office hours help if ever needed. He was open for appointments if the students had any concerns with the work assigned, grades, or other concerns. memorized students' name.. and call them during the class.. :) Yes, to an extent/ Always warns us before any exams or things that are needed to be done. He gave us friendly reminders about studying hard for his tests because passive studying will not do. Additionally, he would give us a fair amount of extra credit to help students boost up their grade. Matthew would remind his students to email him if there are any questions or if people need extra help. He would tell us that he is available during his office hours and would answer our questions. He gave somewhat some extra credit Offered help. He always asked what he could do to improve test scores. always available during office hours he would reply to students outside of class with answers to their questions whether it was in person or through email He apparently puts just as much work in as the students. He has fantastic oral camtasia lectures that are provided for his class on laulima. His exams are challenging, but he tries to provide his students with as many tools as possible, so that they can be successful. He went around the room asking students questions and before he moves on to a different chapter, he makes sure everyone gets the material. He always assured that we could meet with him before class to go over any material we did not understand. He provided resources online, and offered his personal time after class to any student who needed it. Try to make students understand the material as much as possible. He would frequently ask questions to get us the understand the material.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes, but he's challenging and the pace is super fast. yeah. there is a lot of material involved, and he presents it in an attainable way. not an easy course, but he teaches well and if you study, you learn a wealth of material. I highly recommend him because he's a very god teacher. He's very knowledgeable and the materials in Microbiology are hard but he clearly explains it in a very effective ways. I would, even though the class is very difficult students will learn a lot and it will help with other courses as well Absolutely. He is a fantastic teacher. The course might be hard, but it is well developed and presented in a clear manner. It's not just read the book and you don't need to come to class. Yes because he knows the subject very well. yes! He is very passionate about his subject, makes it fun! Yes, strongly . the reason is that there are lots of chances to study microbiology in different ways. His class gives ways to find right route for learning new knowledge in science. i already wrote about this above. in short, yes. Yes because you learn the material without ever be boring. He also provides great resources!! I would, but you MUST work hard for this class in order to pass. You have to be comfortable with the material to understand what are on his tests. If you do not wish to work hard, then don't take this Microbiology class. yes!! because he has passion to teach his students and he wants students study more and learn better.. that's what I feel about his class ans his exam.. Yes, I would strongly recommend Dr. Tuthill even though his test may be challenging. He is an excellent lecture and makes concepts very easy to comprehend. He also as a good sense of humor, which keeps the class wake. Yes, it was a VERY hard class but he does a good job at giving you all the help you can get if you are willing to do the work. Yes i would, great teacher. Yes, because you really learn a lot from his class and he also makes class entertaining. I would recommend Matthew because he knows this subject very well. I would. He is a very good teacher and knows the subject really well. Yes, this is class is never boring Yes, only if they were hard working students. Yes, I already have. I don't think you could find a better teacher at UH than Tuthill. yes because you will learn the material I would only if the student was willing to self-study to ensure a good grade in class.He knows what he is talking about I would definitely. But certainly they would have to be willing to put in some effort. yes I would recommend him to students because he's a unique teacher that really cares about the students growing in their knowledge. He's also very humorous and challenges us to want to learn more and ask questions if we don't get something. Definitely! He is very passionate about microbiology, which makes the learning experience even better and more enjoyable. He was always there if I had any questions and was always very helpful Yes. I feel scientific literacy is important, and that he is a good communicator for this area. Yes, would recommend to other students. He is very enthusiastic about the material and know what he is talking about. Yes, because he teaches in a way by which he explains the material effectively.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

He is very intelligent. great teacher. He gives extra credit but you really need to study for his exams. It's not only about memorizing the materials but more importantly understanding it and be able to relate it in real life. He is a good teacher who knows the course and is fun Love his analogies. He has enthusiasm for teaching. if i had the time and money, i'd take another one of you classes. who knew microbiology was so interesting? i was a bit concerned that i'd end up being a complete germaphobe by the end of the semester. Awesome overall Teacher!!! N/A his lecture is fun and interesting.. Keep teaching. Very good professor!! He is very helpful and can change your mind about the choices you make in life. Thanks :D I went out of my way to take this class, my home institution is UH and I don't live close to KCC. I worked his class around my schedule this semester, and I'm glad that I did. Most of the professors at UH don't care if their students do well, so they don't put in the time to making their lectures clear, interesting, or understandable. More professors need to model their classes like him, if they would I think students would have a better understanding for each course and do better on exams. very approchable I wouldn't take his class again personally but no doubt is he an excellent microbio teacher I was at first intimidated by his syllabus. But I am grateful that I took his class. I appreciate the time he put in to making our class exciting, helping us understand difficult concepts, and applying them to our everyday lives. It was awesome how many resources he provided. Especially the oral powerpoints, which was basically like being in class again listening to his lectures. My favorite teacher and class I took this semester I hope he sticks around. If he can make his exams little easier, that will be great!! Over great teacher! A++++++++

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

Dr. Matthew Tuthill gave examples and utilities towards the various subjects throughout the course. Connecting materials with life scenarios and explaining why the material is important towards Molecular Biology. Very enthusiastic about the subject. He is very knowledgeable in microbiology. He knows how to relate to the students and can have fun but knows his priorities like what needs to get accomplished by the end of the semester. He is patient when explaining some of the more weird aspect of this subject. His knowledge of the field. But to a teacher knowledge is not everything. He also knows how to teach. Made things very clear and understandable. He explains the material to the students in different ways so that the material is well understood. He is willing to meet when his help is needed. Great understanding of the material, easy to understand, and easy to talk to. Knows how to explain concepts in an easy to understand manner. he is very knowledgable about the course materials He's good at explaining and lecturing on a subject because of his interest in it.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

The quizzes were pretty difficult, although it is to be expected as this is a 200 level class. Maybe schedule the class a little earlier so that we don't end late. The "cliques" in class were a bit distracting. Nothing. Keep doing what ur doing None come to mind. none The textbook wasn't really used.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

Emails to keep us updated not only with class-related stuff but also stem center and other heath-related information. He was open to questions. If u went in during office hours or even if u could catch him on campus somewhere, he would answer all my questions He replies to emails immediately. He also ensures that the students are learning the real life applications of the Lectures we learn from class. Always checks up on students progress, understanding and ability to process the information provided. He understands his students well enough that when student do not understand what he had just presented, he will represent the same idea but in a different manner so student do understand. He pushed back due dates because we were behind. He was available for questions from students outside of class. Weekly quizzes kept us on track.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. He's a very great teacher! Very knowledgeable and very effective teacher. Difficult grader but nevertheless you learn alot. Yes, because he seems to take his sense of success from seeing his students do well. Hell yes. Classes were hands on, fun, material is of course hard but he tried his best to put into terms that we would understand Yes. Yes, Matt is an excellent teacher, easy to understand and easy to interact with. yes he class offers students a lot of lab experience that you normally not get. Yes, because he makes the subject interesting. Very organized.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

He is approachable. Top 2 best classes I ever took Very approachable teacher, understanding and smart.

Even when our experiiments' results were a disaster, he remained patient while working with us to figure out what went wrong. Loved the course and the lab work associated with it.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

He definitely is a great teacher and knows his material. He explains each topic very well and grades hard to make sure we learn. however, the exams are not hard if you pay attention and study hard. Mr. Tuthill gives it his all in lecture and tests and encourages us to give our all. He pushes us to our best ability. his major strength is exmapling with certain concept. he usually give us good explain and examples that was really helpful to understand hard concept. Opened new perspectives to the environment around us. He knows the subject very well and is very entertaining. He is always trying to get stud. involved in active learning. he is strong in all aspects of teaching. He knows the subject matter. He knows how to make it interesting and simple to understand. Professor Tuthill definitely knew the materials for this course well! I really liked how he always used his own words and examples to explain stuff. He made lecture class very interesting and engaging as well because he didn't read off the boring textbook. knows subject very well Can explain and give good examples of what is being taught Matthew Tuthill major strengths would have to be his knowledge of the course if you look at his powerpoints it has main points with key terms to know but everything else on that slide he lectures. He is also great at engaging his students and relating the topic/subject to life situations I can relate to. He uses props to help explain cycles that go on in the body and have students actively respond during lectures. He is an awesome teacher! The best teacher I have ever had. He makes the material very interesting and he is hilarious so it is easy to pay attention and its fun to go to class. Encourage students to study, study, study in fun way. Very fun and interesting class mixed with textbook and present issues. Passion for the subject. :] Knows the subject. Very good at lecturing. He is a fantastic educator. That is not always an attribute found in a college instructor. He is sure to teach the subject in several different ways to be sure that students can learn no matter what their learning style. Interesting, Enthusiastic, Funny talking VERY knowledgeable in the subject, showed a lot of enthusiasm about the subject. At one point, I actually wanted to start doing lab research... Tuthill is a very active teacher that can explain things in different ways that many people would never imagine. He also makes learning the material easy, although it is a lot of information to retain and apply. Everything Matthew Tuthill is a very knowledgeable and straight-forward teacher. This pushes students to work hard. Matthew has great energy and jokes throughout his lectures. He is one of those professor who loves microbiology His knowledge on his profession and how he teaches his students for a better understanding. Subject knowledge. Constantly works to get complex ideas simplified and communicated. He knew what he was teaching and he comes to class prepared to teach and he explained everything to his best ability. He is very animated and it's easy to tell that he loves the course material. He makes lectures interesting He know's the subject matter really well he is really smart and explain topics very well. This class was too difficult for me to learn about microbiology. However, Mr. Tuthill teached me to understand easily. Interesting teacher. He knew his stuff. Uses great metaphors to make the material easier to comprehend. He knows his subject very well. He always answer his students' questions clearly. His class is fun. If you are a serious student who wants to learn more in-depth about the subject, then i would recommend Matthew Tuthill. He is very knowledgable with his field of expertise and you can see his passion about his subject itself. Sometimes, it is overwhelming to be in his class because he is just so enthusiastic about it and wants you to appreciate everything about microbiology. He explains the lectures very well, and he gives you lots of options depending on your capability to learn. Oral powerpoint are given if that's your preferences of learning. And he gives reading materials as well. M. Tuthill major strenghts as a teacher are Entertain the student while learning, she also compare real life to what we studying. He really know what he talking about and teach us fairly in class. He is very animated. So even though sometimes class seems a little long, its never too boring. He also gives good illustrations for complex ideas. Dr. Tuthill has a great heart for the subject. Sometimes he gets so excited about the subject that its funny! Professor Tuthill has a great way of clearly explaining the microbiology in a simple way. Unlike other science teachers, Professor Tuthill explains things to us as students who are trying to learn the material, and not as colleagues taking a refresher course. He also uses very interesting and thought provoking examples that helped me understand and retain the material.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

Honestly, I coldn't suggest for Mr. Tuthill. He's a great teacher and I wish that he would teach the nursing program or other classes. I would definitely pick him again. nothing , just keep going!! none None Keep doing what he's doing. I'm pretty much satisfied with Professor Tuthill's teaching because his lectures are easy to follow, interesting, and engaging. There would be no changes I would tell him to make. The why his course is set up is straightforward. NONE. nothing Don't change! None None, hes too awesome none none, enjoyed him as a teacher I found it hard trying to complete and review the study guide before exams. I thought they were basically over every concept covered in the book. I would suggest having a more tailored study guide that pertain to testing materia since there is no study review in classl. In my opinion you tend to rush through concepts sometimes. I would have appreciated more "stop and review" time after each important concept. none Review material more such that he can confirm that we understand what he feels is most important to understand. Slow down a little. Some of us need a little longer to process the incredible amount of info that's doled out each lecture. Not much, just maybe just make exams a little bit less challenging for students =) none Make things more clear and enjoyable for students. Not so much material on one exam. More class assignments to keep students from falling behind. Exams are hard. When we rephrases his exam questions, sometimes it is very confusing. Even if you knew you studied for his exams, he has his way of rattling your brain if you truly understood his subject. Not all of us in his class will be pursuing the field of microbiology but i feel like he wants you to learn everything about microbiology even the minute details which sometimes makes me not want to come to class to listen to his lectures. Change before the test should give us one class to talk about the test and what is gonnah be on it. Maybe curve the tests a little more would help lower the drop rate. N/A

He makes sure that if you can't make it to class, theres lectures online to review that day so you won't miss out. Also, he makes sure his jokes or topics he relates to certain parts in different chapters doesn't offend anyone. he usually has 35 students and memorizes all of students and ask question with their name during the lecture. He asked us to think for ourselves. He asked questions and let us know if we had any questions we could ask during office hours, class or even after class. He also gave individual attention to each student when it came to grades and deciding wether to drop his class or not. For one he discussed future options. Professor Tuthill showed concern for students by always reminding us to study, study, study. He also upgrades us about our grades once in a while to show how we're doing. He is also available at his office whenever we needed him. He shows concern for his students by post-poning exams due to circumstances and at the end of every class he reminds us to visit see him for questions or any confusion. He always responded to emails very quickly and was always kind and helpful when needed. average of exam score was lower than he expected. Always offered help in/out of class Constantly quizzed the class (kept us on our toes) Kept things interesting Clear outline of how to manage the heavy load of material Give extra credits and be available office hours. Made himself available, whenever. Always asks if we have questions and open to any thing we ask him etc. got to know people by name, for me, its a big deal when teachers make an effort to get to know who you are. Great resources Matthew Tuthill would provide many opportunities to do projects and internships. He even promoted the Service Learning and STEM programs from the very beginning of the semester, as well as changing to an A.S.N.S degree. Tuthill also asked the class about its plans as far as jobs (as well as backup plans), and promoted health and science professions. In my opinion I don't believe Matthew is the type of professor who shows concern. Either you make an effort and pass or you don't make an effort fail. He always said that this course "IS ALL YOU" He emailed his students for reminders on exam dates and assignments. He also replies to his students' emails within 24 hours. Forwards job/experience opportunities and direction in the related field. He gave us oral power points on laulima and he also teaches at a reasonable pace so that it is easy for students to learn. Always remind students about certain deadlines, and sends out scholarship link opportunities through email i think so Not sure. He spoke with them after class and emailed them about upcoming exams, events, and opportunities. He encourages his students to participate. He sends us reminders on emails and makes sure he mentions it in class too. You can really see and feel that he wants the students to learn and get their money's worth. He mentions about peer mentors if we didn't understand something. He encourages us to go to his lab if we want to learn more. And he gives lots of options and ways on how to learn and study. From what I notice show concern for student are how can we pass the class and how can we improve our study if we fail the first time. He was always very quick to respond to emails. He also knew all of our names in a short amount of time. Dr. Tuthill gave us many extra credit opportunities. I feel that he clearly makes it impossible to fail his class because he provides many resources for us. During class, he uses really great analogies to help us understand the material more clearly. Since he know that the material is hard, he provides online lectures of his power points. He also has available office hours and responds to emails as quick as possible. He reminds us his office hours and emails us helpful tips for exams.

Yes!!!!!! He's a great teacher and I would definitely have him again if he taught a different course. Yes, I will recommend him to my friends because Matthew knew his subject very well and he really helps me out a lot. I hope that other professor should act like him. Yes, due to the facts that he gives a lot of information. Yes because his lectures keep you awake and he teaches in a way that makes it easy to learn. He doesn't just read off of slides and read straight from the book. He actually puts time into his lectures instead of being boring and taking the easy way out. I would absolutely recommend him. Yes! Though I didn't do very well on my exams, i still learned a lot from him. His lectures are very informative and fun! yes very challenging Yes, i would recommend matthew tuthill to other students because students WILL LEARN. I would if you don't mind putting in lots of extra time in to study Yes, if they want to learn the subject Mr. Tuthill is the right professor. yes, because you will really learn from this class. Yes, I would, because I could deepen of knowledge about basic microbiology. No, he didn't really teach that well. Too much material on tests. Yes, because he obviously knows the material but also explains it in a way for others to understand. Yes, because he knows his subject. He is really excited about learning more about microbiology even though he already knows so much about it. I would recommend him to students who are very serious about studying. His class is not an easy A, you have to work hard for it. And for those students who wants to pursue the field of microbiology and wants to further enhance their skills and knowledge then i would recommend Matthew Tuthill. I would recomment M. Tuthill to students because I can gaurantee they will learn alot and youll never regret staying in class with him. Yes! If their willing to do the work. Micros never easy. But he does a good job in helping you remember main topics. I would definitely recommend Dr. Tuthill to students who really want to learn the subject. He's a great professor and you will learn. In the beginning of the semester, I thought I was going to die taking this class, but I actually had a great time being in this class. YES! It's a tough course, but Professor Tuthill helps make it easier to understand. You will definitely feel like you learned and understand the material taught in the class.

I enjoyed his class very much and wish he was a going to be a teacher for nursing. He pushed me to my best ability and made learning SO much fun! Also applies microbiology to real life situations. It was not just a class with text book teaching me, there was an actual teacher who reached. haha He is what every teacher should be. I really liked how Professor Tuthill uploads all of his lectures online because when we couldn't attend class, we still had access to his lectures. He is very enthusiastic and I can see his fascination of the subject which keeps me not only awake but interested as well Hes hot. other teacher should learn from him. The lecture recording posted on Laulima was really helpful because we could listen to the lecture as much as we want until we understand. But only for a year and a half because I'm going to Cali *wink* Good. -Mrs Corn I'm going to miss his class. -tough class for it to be entry level -all exams are fill in blank, essay, and multi (yes spelling do count) -there are no study review in class so have good note taking skills -do all extra credit (its very reasonable and not too time consuming ) because it will boost grade -I wish I would have been warned about exam #3 even if its open book/notes it is still hard so take time to make detail notes about microbes -at the end of the semester some of the photos in lecture are stomach turing so beware n/a great, funny guy. i enjoy your class... I highly recommend this class to anybody thinking about majoring in any type of science field. I wish Dr. Tuthill taught other science courses such as Zoology. I wouldn't change anything for this class. It was well-planned, and the lectures and labs were lots of fun. I very much like the idea of weekly quizzes, as they kept me especially understanding all of the material covered in lecture. require checkpoints for final lab report; this would both help students stay on track and make sure students know what is happening at each point of the lab

Flexibility in laying out the course's schedule according to students' input. He is always available before, after, and any spare time he might have to meet with students.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Absolutely. Nowhere else can undergraduates get this level of rigorous labwork curriculum with an instructor who understands and accommodates their challenges. He makes biotechnology much less intimidating than it has to be for students with no prior experience. I would highly recommend him to other students because of his teaching style. He is able to take a subject that contains a substantial amount of information and teach the material in a relateable, and timely manner. Out of all my classes, this is the class that I have learned the most information, which also correlated with my other biology classes and better prepared me for those other classes, as well.

17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?

He displays genuine passion for student's learning. Keep up the good work! Don't be discouraged if students do not do as well as you would hope, because that falls upon the student to step up to the plate. You have a unique teaching style that anyone on any level of knowledge in any given area can listen to one of your lectures and completely understand every word of it.

Matthew Tuthill's major strengths as a teacher is that he really knew everything there is to know about microbiology. You could ask him any question concerning the subject and he could answer it. great explanations and interesting lectures Very detailed! Love it! He kept the subject interesting and knew what he was talking about without referrinig to the text too much. kept lecture interesting w/ stories relevant to the material, he was enthusiastic and encouraged student participation by calling on students and getting them involved in his examples Dr. Matthew knew the area very well and is very knowledgeable. He came to class very prepared and knows the subject very well. He was clear about the topics and what are his expectations. He knew how to relate the subject to our daily lives which does to some extent help students retain materials. He involved student participation and made sure the students was on the same page as he is.He talks loud and clearly and paces his words or sentences. He is able to intertwine current events into the classroom and apply it to the subject at hand. His slides are extremely stimulating and colorful. It keeps me interested. I never liked Microbiology, but once I took his class, I am able to enjoy it and want to learn more. Thanks to him. He has influenced me to learn and do more. He is great teacher, made me to think more and get involved. I even changed my major because how he made this course interesting. His strength is that he can give student an easy explanation with an easy example relating to hard subject. He always asked questions about the subject matter during lectures to 'recap', and it wasn't in a manner to make students feel 'dumb', but to make sure we were absorbing what we learned. He promptly responds to emails, and always offered resources throughout the semester to earn extra credit or to receive help. His lectures that were available online through laulima were a HUGE success in my success as a student, and I highly reccommend that more instructors provide this vehicle as a back up to their materials in class. He even provides previous exams as study guides for upcoming exams! :) Passion for the subject. Motivation to impact students on a personal level. Matt is absolutely passionate about his craft. If there was ever a teacher who was underpaid and under appreciated by his students it's probably Matt. He has consistent energy in all his lectures and pushes students to discover things for themselves rather than spoon feeding us. He does not lecture from the textbook or slides by the publishers. He makes his own slides. He is eloquent and never goes off topic and ties together all chapters. He doesn't just teach microbiology, but rather how it relates to our everyday lives (ie, meat products, government intervention, world history, big business). He encourages students to make a difference in the world and reinforces that idea every step of the way; he truly leads by example. His course is challenging and comprehensive. You really come out with great understanding of the world. He is an amazing teacher with, with his own style and approach to getting his point across. He has his own perspectives on certain subjects, and it able to justify his bias. I believe having a teacher think outside of the textbook chapters makes his lectures far more interesting. His tests are fair but can be hard. He will set you up to learn the basics of microbiology in this class. His ability to make such a tedious subject matter interesting and fun without losing the fundamental components is one of his major strengths. He is well organized, efficient, and willing to go the extra mile to help a student. He encourages class participation without making an individual feel uncomfortable, and he is excellent at clarifying and making analogies for concepts that are hard to grasp from simply reading the book. He was an amazingly talented speaker. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures because he taught microbiology utilizing many examples in life that we could all relate to. Also, it seemed as though he was very passionate about the subject matter and encouraged us as students to become more interested in the subjet as well. I would highly recommend Matthew Tuthill as an instrucor to future students planning to take microbiology courses and would gladly register for any other classes that he is planning to teach in the future. He is very knowledgeable and makes the class interesting. He maintains an excellent pace during the course of the semester. I never felt like we had to rush through the material. Exam material is always covered in the lecture. All the material is accessible via Laulima. He is very knowledgeable and make learning fun. Also, I ilke how he tries to relate microbiology to other situation just so the student can make a connection. knowledge of the subject I thought that Professor Tuthill was a great lecturer. He really made the class interesting. I also liked the fact that he provided tools we could use to further understand the subject, such as online oral lectures, powerpoints, and worksheets.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

N/a. none. Make more extra credit opportunities for those who isn't doing the Service Learning. None powerpoints were really long (a lot of slides), some of the pictures didn't show up on my computer so i ended up printing blank slides, i don't have a solution, but just fyi. offer more points so that final grade isn't based solely on exams and a few homeworks...maybe add more homework? tests were a little difficult for a 100 level class Dont be so picky and anal about spelling. I get that spelling is important but it should not be critical or crucial on the exams. Technically, spelling does not measure the knowledge we have about microbiology. If the students are able to explain what they are saying then the spelling is a minor issue.being a spelling anal nut bag is infuriating. I mean if you are able to distinguish what the word is supposed to be then be ok with it because it means you know what the word is. But, if u cannot not distinguish the word then mark it wrong. But spelling is not a huge deal. Also, it gets tiresome to present so much materials in one day. That is how students are unable to retain all the information because it is overloading us with so many information that we are unable to process it all together. Wish he would leave some of his slides up for more than a few seconds. None. Perfect teacher. None, whatsoever! At the beginning of the class explain what the agenda will be regarding lecture. None at all. Class is enthusiastic, interesting, and organized. I would take the test out on all of the pathogens. It is great for the overview, however the test wasn't about much of the lectured information. Yes, it was graded fairly but it was just too much information to absorb. The purpose of the test was for students to study on their own, which we all did...but it was a lot to know. Perhaps shorter chapter summary worksheets. Some of them took too long to complete and somewhat made it difficult for me to focus on my other classes during the semester. None I am not a huge fan of open book exams. I would suggests that exam 3 open note book should be split into to two part exam. I wanted to learn and have a good grasped on chapters 21-26 instead of looking it up on the book. make tests easier!!!! I think the worksheets were a bit of work. I took about 2-3 hours doing one of them. But I guess they are usefull as study guides. I think maybe involve the class more into the learning key points like the DNA replication exercise we had.

He would show concern for students by being accessible outside of class when anyone of us needed help. offering help during office hours as well as extra credit By offering office hours before class. He encouraged us to see him if we didn't understand material. He would ask if we had questions, if everything was clear, as well as review with us what was previously learned to reinforce the info; also offered study sessions in the leahi hospital; responded to email in a timely fashion He always called on students or got students to participate by answering his questions. He would tell us critical information that is to be expected on a exam and what he would not test us on. If any students had any concerns about any topic, he would go over it, till the student understood it. Told us to come and visit him, and told us about tutoring services. He offered resources students could utilize like online study guides, previous exams, etc. and he also notified us numerous times about the STEM tutors that are always available for students (even online!). Like I said, he pushes students toward self-discovery. He makes us ponder our daily lives and how we treat others and our own bodies. But ultimately, he treats the class like adults who can make their own decisions. He helps students when possible but also does not baby us. Through his demeanor when answering questions. He is very exited about research regarding microbiology and wants his students to be excited as well. He invited us to come to labs outside of class where he could further spend time answering questions regarding more recent research or procedures. He was always willing to help his students. He treated everyone fairly. He also provided many opportunities in the form of extra credit to be successful in this course. He gave us access to all his lectures for self study on laulima. He mentioned to the class that he was concern for the class and wants only the best for the students. always there for them and willing to help out in anyway He lets us know what are the key points to study. He gets our grades in on time.

Yes, I would recommend him to any student that is interested in biology, but be warned that it is a very intense class. Yes. Yes, he surely knows his stuffs. Yes! Because he lectures with passion and can relate the things we learn in his MICR class to our everyday lives. yes; he's an interesting professor and it's an interesting subject; he's excited about the topic, makes learning fun w/ stories Yes because he does explain the subject well but you really need to study hard ahead of time and you need to be a good speller. Plus on exams he does give partial credit. He is always telling students to be on top of their reading and he always draws on the board to illustrate his topics. Plus he has a lot of materials on laulima that will benefit your understanding of the class. He also has oral lectures posted on laulima that has him explaining the same materials he would in class so that way you have extra resources or something to help you just in case you forgot what he said ehich is 100% of the time. Definitely! He is extremely thorough. He cares about his students! I have had other professors who could care less because they brought in grants for the school and teaching wasn't the professors' main concern. Dr. Tuthill makes his students think about topics at hand. I enjoyed his class. Wish he would teach more classes, though. Definitely. Yes because his lecture is organized well and he is very nice for helping student. Yes, definitely. If they want a professor who doesn't prep you for the exam, but instead teaches you the subject matter to retain it, as all classes should be. Yes, because of everything I just said. Yes, because he makes you think...therefor the student learns the material. Yes (for reasons stated in earlier comments) Absolutely. He is passionate about teaching and he maintains high expectations of the students. Yes I would recommend him because he makes the class fun and educational. Although, the exams are challenging I learned a lot in his class. yes, even though micro is a very hard subject he makes it atleast a little interesting to learn. Yes, I would definitely recommend Professor Tuthill because he makes this class interesting with his passion on microbiology. I thought the class was pretty challenging and made you think critically.

Your cool & funny =D Wish he taught MICR 140 :( He talks too much about food. I believe he is vegan or vegetarian. maybe that is why he constantly ridicules or criticize meats. It is interesting to a point but gets tiresome because then we are not concentrating on the topics but rather us wanting to eat. So him talking about food gets me hungry. He is passionate and caring towards his students. He needs a raise!!!! Some students from before told me how his class is hard, but really isnâ??t. He explained everything very well so everybody could understand. If student want to learn something than it should take Mr. Tuthillâ??s class because he is great teacher. Very personable; I would highly reccommend him for students interested in his MICR 130 class. I do wish that he could teach more than just the two classes he currently teaches, but I know it is good to have a variety of professors in a variety of subjects. Humorous, enjoyable, passionate. Matt is the best teacher I have ever taken. I am pursuing my second bachelor's in Hawaii and in my first 4 years of college, from the mainland, I have never come across a teacher as amazing as Matt. He inspires and gives you an immense amount of appreciation for many subjects beyond microbiology. He provides a plethora of tools online for your disposal, including audio lectures and related articles. I can honestly say that I have bettered myself as a person because of his class. How many teachers do more than just teach these days? He is challenging, so every good grade I got on his exams made me proud. Matt is an asset to KCC and should be given a grant to do whatever he wants. Good class. Makes me want to learn more about microbio even after the class is over. Overall, I felt that he was an awesome instructor (one of my favorite teachers thus far) because I definitely learned a lot more than I expected about the subject of microbiology. I think Prof. Tuthill is one of the finest instructors on campus. I like your style of teaching. You made the difficult parts of the class easy to understand as well as fun. Awesome job...don't let the other students tell you otherwise. His class was by far the toughest I've ever taken. But, the way he teaches makes it easier to understand. This class taught me different methods of studying, as well. the worksheets were really helpful as well as the online resources posted on laulima he has a nice tattoo on his leg but he is very hairy. it funny because you can see the hair on his legs flying. His voice is masculine in class but when he has is oral lectures posted on laulima his voice is slightly feminine. Thank you. Eliminate essay questions, grading maybe slightly unfair. Personally, I think he is the ideal teacher. Extremely knowledgeable,and his teaching style caters to many students. But even if it isn't your style,he provides many resources on laulima (such as powerpoints,oral lectures,past exams),so you still have options. I've been to multiple universities and had countless professors and few put this much effort into the students learning,so consider Professor Tuthill a rare gem. He knows how to corporate daily life situations into the course with his lectures. Everything! Excellent professor!!! Matthew Tuthill is enthusiastic about the subject area. He is extremely familiar with the subject he's teaching, as well as new and current developments that have changed since the text was printed. He is a very enthusiastic professor. He really knows the course material because he would teach his lessons with his own personal experiences in the lab. He encourages his students to perform to the best of their abilities. He also provided us with chapter worksheets that guided us through each chapter when he went over them in class. And he also made sure he provided us with all the help we could get on laulima including all the powerpoint lectures and also oral lectures. He knew the material that he was teaching. He also taught us in a way that it would make it easier for us to learn. He is profoundly knowledgeable about the subject matter and brings relevant and supplemental information to light through his own personal experiences and research. very good teacher.knows his subject really well. MATT IS ONE OF THE BEST INSTRUCTORS I HAVE HAD! HE PROVIDES SO MUCH INFORMATION AND TOOLS TO SUCCEED IN CLASS THAT THERE IS REALLY NO EXCUSE ANYONE SHOULD FAIL! I WILL BE QUITE HONEST AND SAY I NEVER "READ" MY BOOK, GLANCED AT, AND MAYBE LOOKED SOMETHING UP... YES! BUT I RELIED ON ACTUAL LECTURE, ORAL LECTURES ONLINE, POWER POINTS AND THE WORKSHEETS. THATS HOW RELIABLE THE THINGS MATT TALKS ABOUT IN CLASS AND ONLINE ARE. His knowledge and the extra efforts to provide us with learning material. -Knew his microbial bacteria -Knew the subject matter really well. He is very organized. His resources, like the oral lecture that can be downloaded, it is a good refresher even though he already explained clear in class. Mr. Tuthill was a fantastic teacher to learn from. He obviously greatly enjoyed and was very knowledgable about the material. He made every attempt to teach the material at a level that everyone could understand. He also threw in many incredibly interesting stories and examples that not only helped to relay the necessary information and keep me interested, but it also expanded the way that I look at the world around me. It was great to have a professor that was so involved in the subject that he was teaching. He was VERY knowledgable of microbiology. He always gave analogies to the things he talked about which made it very easy to understand. His tests were very fair. He knows his stuff! He gives practical analogies to simplify complicated terms to benefit his student's understanding. He adds humor to the mix of seriousness to lighten the load of difficulty because lets face it, microbiology is NOT an overnight processing of infos to easily absorb at one time. Matt knows his stuff! He knows so much about the subject, and can correlate it with simple examples of everyday life to help his students comprehend it easily. He also teaches with excitement which draws students to become more interested in class. He is knowledgeable, hard-working teacher, he always connect microbiology with our real life and the world. He was really enthusiastic about what he was teaching and made it more exciting for the students to learn about microbiology. He is a very knowledgable teacher that knows his material well. He is very kind.And he explain evetything easily. He has more learning choices besides in class teaching such as audio recording and online access to the power points he's using. he's concern in his students, he is well organized,he is always on time He does a lot of encouragement for us to do good.

Not one. He should be more lenient on his exams because it was harder i thought it would be None. He could explain a little more on things. The tests can be tricky! pls. take it easy on our test, prof matthew. MAYBE TO CUT DOWN ON THE AMOUNT OF NEW MATERIAL ON THE FINAL. I HAVENT TAKEN THE FINAL BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW IT IS 50% OLD MATERIAL AND 50% NEW, WHICH IS ABOUT 8 OR 9 CHAPTERS, SO ITS A LOT. OTHER THAN THAT MATT IS AWESOME!! KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO! Maybe split up the material into smaller chunks. Maybe four to five tests versus the three we had. Make the test easier. None. None. No changes. It would be great if he could remind us of our exams and what the material were the day before the exam though. We have a syllabus but sometimes I forgot the exact date x]. That's my fault but it'd be nice. Other than that great job! As much as possible, keep politics out. Or at least be fair. There are 2 sides of the coin, bring balance by bringing both major parties on an equal playingfield...both parties are equally bad. One party is not above the other in terms of what was done or not done well for this country. The only thing I was unclear about was the class presentation. It wasn't really discussed in class. Maybe give students more time on the open book/notes exam. n/a Tests are tough no.. nothing Don't ever give up on teaching. You are one of the best teachers I ever had.

I can't speak for other students but he was always willing to answer my questions genuinely. He offered us extra credit to make up any loss of points and he told us to come see him anytime during his office hours to talk about grades and if we dont understand anything. He used so many techniques and ways to teach us. By using online recordings for lectures and having powerpoints. He made sure that we asked questions if we were unsure, as well as provide more than enough resources through Laulima. He always encourages his students to participate in class and pushes us to think for ourselves so we can better understand the information for ourselves. He provides his students with all the possible tools to study for the exams. He also constantly reminded his students that he was always available during his class hours if anyone needed extra help. He let us know our grades and let us have an open book test to raise our grades. Also he gave us many options for extra credit. It's obvious he wants us to be successful in the class and in the future. He offers himself to be a resource in and out of class hours and promptly responds to any questions or concerns we have. the way he teaches the class is already enough for the student to learn about MICR. HE WAS VERY BLUNT FROM THE BEGINNING. STATED WHAT HE EXPECTED OF THE STUDENTS, INFORMED US OF ALL THE EXTRA THINGS ON LAULIMA THAT ARE VERY HELPFUL TO STUDENTS, AND ENCOURAGED US TO FORM STUDY GROUPS! very much. He put forth additional effort to provide us with study materials and verbal lectures. He replies quickly on emails. He always encouraged us to do extra credits, and to review before exams He was very concerned with the students participation in class and made every attempt to get the students to communiate. He also showed a lot of concern for the grades that the students recieved. He gave opportunities for extra credit to help the student bring up their grades and provided many resources as well as left himself open for questions in and out of class. He also frequently reminded us of upcoming dead lines to drop the class if we were concerned about our grades He called on everyone in the class and he took time to answer everyone's questions and made sure they understood the answer he gave them. He made himself available for office hours without any hesitation. He encourage students to drop by during office hours if needed, he ask questions, and calls on people during class as example of what he is teaching. He always wants to make sure that people are up-to-date with the material before he moves on. He asked us if we had any questions and "picked" on us so that we would get his concepts. He involves students in lecture and asks if everyone understands before he moves on ... he always encourage his students to participate, giving advice, At the beginning of the class he provided us with "contingency plans" in case we dont end up where we wanted. He showed other possible career pathways. I know that its not part of the curriculum but he went an extra mile for us.

Oh,definitely. Yes i would because he is passionate about what he teaches and he knows a lot about microbiology. YES!!! Awesome teacher, great guy, always wants to help his students suceed. I would strongly recommend Matthew Tuthill to students because although the subject is difficult, he relates it to ordinary life. I learned so much in this class, it prepares me for the rigorous science courses ahead. He is a tough professor but he is also driven and enthusiastic so it keeps you interested in the material. I would recommend him because he is very encouraging and only wants the best for his students. He does everything he can to provide us with all the possible tools to do well in his class, and it is just up to you to take the time to work hard and study. Yes, he is a very hard teacher, but you lern a lot. Yes, for anyone interested in or majoring in a biological science I would recommend him. He can be a tough grader but is thorough and informative. yes.if the student wants a challege,he/she should see prof. matt. no. if the student is lazy then it won't work out to pass the class for Prof. matt's class. ABSOLUTELY! YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS!! SHOW A LITTLE INITIATIVE AND EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE! Yes. The level of knowledge attained by putting forth a modest effort in class is well worth it. yes, even though the course is difficult he is a great teacher. Yes. He makes Micro 130 very interesting. Yes, because, even though his exams were really hard, I know that they would stick in our minds better than having easier exams. Keep doing what you're doing and don't change your teaching style. Yes I would definitely recommend because he is great and he makes learning microbiology really interesting. I think I can say he easily makes one of my top 5 best teachers. Yes,he works hard for his students in preparation, writing up new exams, & checking homework assignments..., but the students also need to study hard & work hard to do well. If any students want to learn, they WILL, without a doubt, learn alot if they were to take his class seriously, but must be prepared to study hard... or else whateva is put in, that is what they will deserve to get. It is definately a mixed blessing. I would recommend him to other students. I will warn them that it is a very fast-paced class, however, you will learn so much only to benefit you. Things he will teach you will affect your thinking for the rest of your life. Students will have a clear understanding as to how microbiology evolved and how it affects everyday life. Yes, you really can learn a lot from his class, and he gives a lot extra credit points. Yes, I would recommend him to fellow students. He was a good teacher and taught in a way that was fun to learn. yes because even though the class is tough you gain a lot of knowledge from him I recommmed his class.. yes,they will learn a lot from him, he have a lots of ideas about the course Yes. If they wanted 100% course material retention then they should choose him as their prof. BUT they have to step up on his challenge.

Really,really outstanding teacher and person.It's a priviledge to have him as a professor. He is a pretty relax teacher outside of class Matthew Tuthill is a great teacher who encourages student interaction between the teacher and peers. He is concerned with grades. You did a great job this semester! I appreciate all the help and extra credit you provided for us. Thank you for everything. He is fun and class is sometimes interesting but you have to make sure you pay attention and take notes. prof matt is a good teacher and gives really difficult test.i just hope that he will take it easy in giving test because we're not on that level where we know and familiar with everything.overall,he is a very good teacher.he has made my money all worth it because i learned a lot from his class. Thank you! He gave an exam purely based on six chapters he didn't even talk about! It was open book, but it was a lot of material to be studying with no direction from him. In addition, he required students to do research and present it to the class the week before finals. Now why would I want to stress over a research project when I can be studying for finals?? He always replied to e-mails in a timely fashion and was respectful of our questions and concerns in the class. He catered to our concerns and questions, and was flexible with our schedule, enough to get things done. Inquire about personal progress in each exercise along the course. He would ask questions and make sure we understood the principle of what we were doing, and offered out of class help if needed.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. Matt is one of the better teachers I've had. He gets the students excited about what they are learning and is clearly passionate about what he does. Yes, he's a great and knowledgeable professor. Yes because he wants everyone to exceed, and each student is urged to succeed through their own efforts. Yes! If the students are interested in the research and biotechnology areas, he's a very knowledgeable teacher who KNOWS how to teach.

He's brilliant and has an awesome passion for microbiology which shines though his lectures. Very Entertaining and interesting. He put the material in real life situations and taught about things going on in the world that pertained to the course that i had no idea about. He made class interesting and fun and i've learned way more than i thought i would of. It was a very good learning environment. He put things into ways that were easy to understand and follow. breaking down the chapter and explaining the material he knows the subject matter very well and he explained each subject matter in a simplest possible way for the student to understand it better. He is very passionate, organized, and clear about his expectations of the class. He offers a lot of resources to complete class objectives and grades were given very promptly. know his material well explain clearly

NONE i think theres too much material to remember on each exam, too much stuff bundle up at one time trying to remember how "this" does "that" the function name and such, would be easier if werent compound all at one time. Exam 3 was the hardest exam for me, so maybe more clarification on what was to be expected so that students are better prepared. no change

He really wants you to learn the material but he also wants students to gain outside knowledge which i believe is more important. He got students involved in class by calling on them or using them in scenarios which painted a better picture. he tried to keep us intersted and looking forward to the next chapter, even boutht in some examples he entertained every questions and concerns of every student having difficulty at all times. Yes, not just in the sense of our course work, but also by raising awareness of issues. make things clear

ABSOLUTELY, He's tough but you will understand and enjoy his class YES! He is a very good teacher and they would learn a lot just by sitting in class and listening and you wont get bored because they are really good lectures if they can handle the way he grades and a bundle of work yes he created a good environment for learning of course i will recommend him. Yes. I think his class is very challenging but success is attainable through hard work. He sets clear due dates and hands back papers/exams quickly and is quick to respond back via email. He also answers all questions asked in class. yes. very knowledgable and good prof.

-knows the subject well -has experience -good powerpoints -excellent lab manual -the journals should be a requirement, it's helpful! Very knowledgeable, knows how to explain concept in a clear way, and gives everyone individual attention. Mathew Tuthill is a challenging teacher who sincerely wants the students to actually learn and think for themselves. He is not the most approachable teacher, but he is friendly and kind when he needs to be. He will not give any handouts and is not there to be anyone's "friend", and this probably offends some people, but he does have the students best interest in mind. He thinks of everything very thoroughly. He would know when a quizzes was hard for us. He would really emphasize what would be on our quizzes. He's very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. His knowledge base is so strong. He is passionate about science, he's punctual and highly organized. His delivery of the information is clear, concise, and at times, highly entertaining. He is knowledgable, speaks clearly, and has a sense of humor which makes his class somewhat fun... He knows the material and you can tell he's genuinely interested in it, which makes the subject all the more exciting for the students. He really gets people interested in the subject when most did not start out that way. Very knowledgeable and taught lessons that were easy to understand. Used good examples and drawings. Very intelligent man. He loves life. Matthew Tuthill is extremely knowledgeable in the subject of Microbiology in lieu of his specialization in molecular oncology. His curriculum allows student to explore the field of microbiology without feeling constrained to the textbook. His lectures are informative and do a great job of relating to everyday life, further solidifying the subjects being covered. he knew the material very well He knew the material very well and had a great way of lecturing. He knows his subject very well. His enthusiasm for the subject matter and his ability to engage the students. strong ability to teach Matt is one of the greats. He's always very nice, is extremely knowledgeable in the field, and is very good at holding the attention of his students. He was frequently available even when we were working independently to answer questions, and often had a succession of people whom he had agreed to help next. The fact that so many people were in line for advice speaks to the fact that he was extremely approachable, and I never felt strange making a comment or asking a question either during our lab work, or even during his lectures. Knew the subject a lot and shows passion for the subject.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

allow more time to do the quizzes. most times, 15 minutes aren't enough! if allowing more time for the quiz is not an option, make the quiz shorter and with less questions. i don't think it's fair when we didn't have enough time to finish the quiz. i know i wasn't the only one because all the classmates were complaining about it. Do more review before each quiz and another streaking assignment for more practice. n/a Laugh, because you seem too serious sometimes. Sometimes for the quizzes, I thought either more time should be given or the quizzes should have been made shorter so you could have more time to think about your answers. none. Study guides for the final exam especially becuase it is a cumulative exam. The grading on quizzes did seem a little arbitrary at times. All of the partial points add up quickly, and many of them have no explanation for the reduction in score. Teach advance classes at Manoa. I would honestly extend the lab time as we always seemed as if we were rushing through most of our experiments prior to the unknown project. I would not take away from the lecture time as the information covered is both important and interesting. More time in the lab, definitely. n/a Don't make students feel so inferior for the most part we've only seen this material once not for years and years like you. I was always nervous to ask him a question. I felt that way because of a vibe he had. I did not want to be made a fool of in class. I have felt embarrassed on more then one occasion when talking to him out loud in class because of the way he responded. He can be a bit intimidating to approach so he could perhaps be less critical of "stupid" questions. But on the other hand this approach may have encouraged student to think for themselves and enhanced the overall learning experience... very hard It would have been nice to seem more open lab periods, but that is probably more of a department issue, and doesn't seem like it will be an issue at all come next semester.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

could ask questions throughout the entire class period He went around to each student during the unknowns project to see if they needed any help. Yes, within the limitation of them learning microbiology. One time I saw that a student, who was constantly behind, could not find a certain bacteria on a slide and waited until the last moment to tell Matt. Matt ended up digging through slides in the biohazard jars on the countertops for a slide for this student. He didn't just leave the student behind with a "It's your problem and responsibility" attitude. Also, when most of us would do bad on a quiz, he would actually blame himself for it. And he loved to come around the room to check our progress from time to time for all the labs. He made sure everyone was up to date with our project especially during the unknowns when everyone works individually. Preparing us for quizzes, open question and answer periods, always accessible during lab time. He takes the time to listen and respond accordingly. He allowed us to attend his other class if we needed extra time to perform our experiments. Always asked the class if they were clear with what was going on. Helped one on one, and was always available after class. He allowed for additional time to discuss projects we were working on, further questions about the field, and general talk to monitor for students that might be struggling through the class. n/a Hmmmm I can't really say. He did open times for students though other than the usual labs. Although I know some of my friends and I felt uneasy around him, there was one student in class he paid extra attention to and always encouraged out loud and who he often praised. I know he has the capacity to show he cares but I think it is only for a select few who he believes is excelling in his class. Others, like myself, feel inferior because of the two extremes. I think he gives more time to students who struggle more which I guess is fair. yes Matt was always available for help, and encouraged us to think for ourselves.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

of course! I would recommend him, but be prepared for tough quizzes and final practical. I really liked the unknowns project, which helped me prepare for the final. All the experiments were very interactive and I think it was helpful having Matt explain the procedure before doing it. Sure. Yes I would because he really knows how to present material in a clear way. Also, he likes to help students. He was very involved with his class. Yes, the course was challenging but not overwhelming and he kept it interesting throughout. Of course, and I do! I had him for Micro lecture. Why? Because of all of the aforementioned statements. I would recommend him. He is a great teacher. Yes, but they should be prepared to work very hard for a good grade. yes, cool teacher, very down to earth. I would definitely recommend his for a teacher. I believe I've taken quite a bit away from the class, the most important being the discovery of my passion in the field of biology. if you want a knowledgeable teacher then yes i would recommend him Yes, He's great at lectures and making the material relative. Yes, if you are highly motivated, and need very little assistance in class and can figure out just about anything on your own and just need to fulfill this requirement. No, if you are slightly disorganized and have time management issues as you will feel overwhelm and left behind from the second week of class. Several of my friends dropped out and another one broke down and cried in front of me in class. Definitely--I learned a huge amount in his class and had a lot of fun too. no. I would recommend Matt to anybody interested in a microbiology course, but would at the same time warn them of the difficulty of his quizzes. Yes, he breaks down the subjects covered in an organize way where it becomes easier to comprehend.

nice guy if he could take 30 minutes of class time as a review for the final that would be really helpful. there are so many experiments we perform throughout the semester it's hard to remember everything. if we reviewed in the lab, i think it would be helpful. Great teacher and loves his students/teaching microbiology. His passion for science is contagious!! I love that about him because it gets me excited even if I don't know what I'm doing yet or if I'm scared of the material. Thank you. Great teaching and very influential. If you are a biology and or a science major of some sort and plan to get a PHD, are self assured, confident, well learned and thick skin, he's the guy for you. I feel like he should be working with graduate students who are at least working on their masters. I don't think he is stimulated enough in this elementary course. I believe he can be of great assistance and a great mentor for someone further in their studies. I would consider taking another class from him after taking a few more higher level science classes and talk to him when he sees me as someone who is almost his colleague. I believe he is very smart and can be of more use somehow but is limited to a situation that is imposed upon him by KCC. Perhaps you guys can ask him how he would like to teach with total autonomy to write any type of program. Although, my experience with him this semester was not to the best of my benefit, I believe he has the capacity to help create future scientists who could help further our knowledge in the scientific community. very hard and strict Matt is just a great person. Easy to talk to, easy to approach and enthusiastic about the field. Several times this semester I watched him get very excited over some point in the lecture to the stares of the students. "Come on, guys, isn't that really cool?". Great teacher.

very knowledgable in material and is able to incorporate everyday new events to what the subject matter he was teaching. Matt is very knowledgeable about the subject and is able to explain difficult concepts clearly. He knew the subject. he's a great teacher and knows the material very well. i enjoyed his class very much!!! knows the subject very well passionate about the material he teaches cares about the subject/students. explains complicated topics in new/interesting ways. talks about history & current issues(both local and global) and ties issues into lecture. very funny AND informative lectures! This class covers a broad range of material. Perhaps spending more time on the big key concepts...with fewer powerpoint slides! Somehow make the material easier to understand. Maybe do an exam after every two chapters or something. none provide study guide for tests nothing try fit all readings(chapters/articles) into semester He should not assume that every student who takes his class will become a part of the medical field. MICR 130 is a requirement for many programs other than nursing and pre-med. Teaching the class specifically toward students in those two programs creates a disadvantage for all of the other students NOT in those programs. He should be aware of this if he is not already.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He extensively talked about where the class stood after each exam and the student's options. It was also great that he took into consideration a grading curve for some of his tests. Showed concern after exams and tried to offer extra credit. by voicing it!!!!!! =) available when students needed help tries to relate material to everyday life so we can understand it better let us ask Q during lecture/after class/office hours. said we could call/email him w/ Q. Refused to make exams easier b/c he wanted us to LEARN. Encouraged us to sign up for LAB.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Yes. The material is challenging and so are his tests, but I think Matt provides a comprehensive overview of the subject area. Yes, but the material is really hard to learn. yes, because he's a great teacher, even though it's a hard class. you actually have to work hard to get a good grade in his class. good challenge!!! yes, but very hard teacher yes, but only if they were going to study hard, his class is no piece of cake yes, b/c learned a lot. fun class. Yes, because of the way he presented the material. No, I would not recommend him to other students because he did not provide a good learning environment for the class. It was clear that some students were favored more than others, and he often taught the class according to his biased opinion on certain topics.

I enjoyed taking both your lecture and lab courses. Good teacher, makes class entertaining with the topics he covers and encourages his students to make changes in the world. He makes learning entertaining and applicable to word and life issues. I never dreaded nor regretted attending his class. The knowledge and information I obtained from Micro 140 and 141 was priceless. His class has positively affected my life and I will hopefully carry along this insight to better positively impact the world with my actions. Super passionate about this subject, and really knows his stuff. Matt really encourages his students to getting the most knowledge they possibly can about microbiology. Matt provides his students with words of encouragement and also provides them with constructive criticism. He knew the subject area well and made the class more entertaining. knows a lot Matt's enthusiasm and encouragement were great motivators to learn the material and to participant in his lab classes. He is also very approachable which makes it easy to ask questions and request his advice. He really pushes students to fully understand the material. He doesn't just give the answers. easy to approach, knows his stuff He really knows the subject matter and integrates it into real life situations. He also encourages questions and never makes students feel stupid or inadequate. I was intimidated by the course and although it was hard (really hard)he made it enjoyable and made the concepts accessible to everyone. His passion for the subject is contagious and it really helps in this subject because it has a lot of "boring" potential. I felt communication was a huge pro, also every student knew what they needed to do to perform well within the lab. I enjoyed learning the techniques within the Mico lab. Knows the material and knows how to help people understand. He involves the students in his lectures, making sure they're paying attention and grasping the material. knows the material He knows how to help his students understand complex concepts by going out of his way and using outside examples. His examples really stick in a student's brain which later help build up other foundations of ideas that help them throughout the semester. great teacher! made the class and subject very fun to learn... and he has a great knowledge for this class and taught us very well. He knows his material well and he is very professional. He has a good sense of humor that allows for a positive learning environment.

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?

None Nothing, I think the grading without a curve is a great way to get students to truly study for in class quizzes and really gets students motivated to getting a grade they deserve in the class. :) None None. none. None Maybe additional extra credit, but I know how he feels about that. Tuthill feels per his words, he had it hard in Hilo as a student so as should we in learning. He has his favorite students and he sometimes speaks down to students. none None.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He was always available. He always validated my questions, and was timely with answers and results. He was caring and empathetic with any concern or circumstance but maintained professionalism and a good-positive working atmosphere for all of his students. His grading was fair and his testing was strict, but I believe his students' best interest was always precedence and his methods solicited our highest efforts. By providing lots of one on one conversations which made a lot of us feel comfortable and really showed concerned with whatever questions any of the students had. Helped us in any aspect and let us think for ourselves. talking to then class after a quiz Matt called on each individual student throughout the semester to encourage participation. He also tried to make the course material interesting and fun. He replied to emails. He gave us an outline of what would be on quizes; so that we could study off of that. students needed help with weekly quizzes so when asked, he provided study guides that helped with the quizzes Yes he always made himself available to us outside of class and via email. He really wanted all of us to understand the subject and be able to integrate the information. Listening well and engaging the students in topics that were brought up within discussions even if they were not directly within the course curriculum. This little bit made the class more interested in the course. No. IS NOT SUPPORTIVE AT ALL..ALL HIS ANSWERS TO ANYTHING IS QUIT QUIT QUIT!!!! He has available office hours right after class, returns emails promptly, and takes into consideration a student's lifestyle outside of school. he usually let us know where we stood in grades. he prepped us very well for what to expect at the end of the semester for our unknowns and final practicum. By being a firm grader and making his students rise to the occasion.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Anyone who receives instruction from Dr. Tuthill is privileged. Yes, definitely. Matt is a great professor that is truly compassionate about his students learning. He takes the time to ask you questions and to really get you involved in the class. Yes because although his class is intense, he's an entertaining person and helps students. yes Yes. Although some of the material is challenging, Matt made the lab a great place to learn and develop our skills. Yes; he is intimidating at first but once you get to know him he is really funny and nice. yes. better than some of the other teachers i've had for this subject I have recommended Matt to other students because his classes are fun and you learn a lot. However I always warn them because he is in no way an easy teacher. His tests are hard and the questions require actual understanding rather than just memorized facts. In the end you leave class with a great understanding of the material, but you have to put the time in outside of class to pass with a decent grade. Yes, if you want a straight forward tough teacher that will force you to work hard. I would recommend him to student who are interested in really learning the material. no had him twice girls only take hime because hes eye candy. Yes, I would recommend him to students if a student enjoys challenging and independent styles of learning. He is very lenient and will hear any student out if he/she disagrees with him. He is respectful toward his students, and successfully involves the entire class with the learning process. i would definitely recommend him to other students because he makes the class such a fun and interesting one. he is hard but he makes you really makes you think and teaches us how to apply all the things we learn in his class. Yes, you learn the most in this class. yes,becasue he's a great teacher!!! and i feel like i learned alot

Nothing None. Good professor. great teacher and tries to make class a little more enjoyable. One of the best teachers I have had, it's unfortunate that he doesn't teach more courses that I need to take. He really does a great job... I'd give him a raise :) The guy runs a good lab. He dips snuff. Sometimes as a professor you have to get to know your students and if you can't help point them in the right direction. I have depression issues from taking his classes. The only reason I did it a second time is because i'm ill and he was all that was left. He's an amazing instructor. His passion really shows with his students that show the same amount of respect in his teaching as they do their own work. He made Micro140 the best class I took so far, and he makes everyone feel comfortable and involved with the entire process. Hes awesome. GOOOO Matt! i really enjoyed his lab class!!!! thanks

None I wish i took THIS microbiology lab before taking the lecture at UH, this class was super fun and hands on and really provided me with a stronger sense of what microbiology actually is. This lab class was really educational and taught me so many things that I did not fully understand in my regular lecture class. It also broadened my perspective as to how microbes can help/harm us in the world :) Overall, this was a super fun class and I already recommended it to two of my coworkers that are taking it next semester :) He also take points from students from giving too much of a answer..thats so unfair....alot of students are afraid to speak up but we talk to each other.

Excellent teacher. He is good at explaining complex concepts in a way I could understand. He was very helpful, hands-on with helping me do my lab techniques. He didn't make me feel stupid or slow. His lab procedural book is very good: explains the concepts well and explains lab procedures well. Is well-prepared for lab. I liked the quiz format for exams. Good variety of lab work.

Would have liked more chances to do more lab prep. and other lab procedures instead of allowing the student who finished a lab procedure or quiz first to do the lab prep. work or next lab step. Lecture text book is not good. how about writing your own? Winfrey book is okay

He helped me hands-on with my lab techniques. No other KCC lab teachers had helped me out before. He took time to answer all my questions before and after class. He didn't make me feel bad when I did lab techniques wrong.

Yes, I highly recommend Matt as a science teacher. He's a very good teacher. give him tenure and a big pay raise!!
