13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
he knows his stuff but is kinda stern with his syllabus.
as far as i can tell from interaction through the internet, seems to be a very enthusiastic professor, who loves the topic of the course.
Professor Olson is organized, communicates clearly, and is very aware of what his goals are for this course. He is enthusiastic about the material, and makes the students feel included in that enthusiasm, while still maintaining a critical, analytical eye about the concepts we discussing. I think the course is organized well, and the workload is appropriate. My only issue was that I twice sent emails where I did not get a response and once there was a pop quiz - but there was no announcement on Laulima about it - only an email. I didn't check my email that day - and managed to miss the pop quiz. If there are going to be pop quizzes, there should be an announcement on Laulima. (He did apologize for this) - but for me, that came too late, and I missed the quiz. But overall, a competent, enthusiastic and thoughtful professor. The material was compelling, the documentaries were VERY interesting, and the workload was challenging and engaging without being overwhelming.
14. Assignments are interesting and stimulating.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
just the curriculum of music. It was interesting to get background of the different genres.
the message boards
I liked the assigned readings, particularly the handouts, and the documentaries.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
the documentaries.
the random times pop quizzes were due.
I did not feel that it was necessary to do SIX discussion responses to other students each week. We all ended up asking the same questions and re-hashing the same sentiments over and over each week. I think 3 discussion responses would still stimulate conversation without making it redundant.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It was a good course, I enjoyed it.
great!
VERY good. The material is thoughtfully assigned and chosen, the handout readings and documentaries were VERY interesting and challenging. The workload was interesting and manageable. The papers were explained very clearly and the feedback on the papers was great. I think Professor Olson is a VERY competent professor with an interesting field of study. However, he approached this topic with a truly academic and analytical lens, and I felt that he incorporated the "fun" you would expect out of a pop music and culture class, with academic concepts that were engaging and challenging. He was organized, efficient, and easy to work with. I would recommend this course for sure.

11. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
a really enthusiastic, smart, patient, and engaging professor
He's very knowledgeable on the topic and he's an effective teacher.
Very capable to teach.
he is very excited about what he teaches and very knowledgeable.
that he is very enthusiastic about his subject matter and a pretty good teacher.
He could be a lot more effective in the way he teaches his materials. Although his lectures were well prepared I felt that his insights to the material was rather pointless and was a bit confusing at times.
He is a very enthusiastic teacher and I learned a lot of interesting things about the popular culture which also helps me with critical thinking skill.
a well prepared and thorough instructor who is always excited and enthusiastic about each week's subjects and course load.
Scary intimidating. Not easy to approach. Very arrogant. He seemed to know the content but he would reject anyone's ideas that were not the same as his and because of this, I think this is why we had very little discussion. I feel like the other students were afraid of sharing their opinions because we noticed from others that he would ridicule and criticize their opinions because they did not match his. I feel like he was biased against me because I did not participate very often in discussion and I had different opinions from him. He was not constructive on my midterm paper. He told me I did not understand the prompt and some questions I could have possibly looked at but I thought I addressed them in my paper. There was no other feedback so it was not helpful. Maybe if he was not so intimidating I would have approached him for help or a better response but I was afraid of being ridiculed for having my own opinions and him shooting me down. I think he would have been a better instructor if he would have taken his head out of the clouds and seen us as equals and not inferiors for having other opinions.
He's a great teacher and very fair. He works with his students and presents the material in such a way as to be fun as well as instructional.
Very charismatic and knowledgeable, which helps engage students.
He was a great professor, and I learned a lot in his course, it was very interesting.
Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable on class material.
Great professor. Very knowledgable of his information.
well organized, helpful in many ways, good teaching skills
He is very informative and knows the material well. He communicates well to the students to get the material across.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
movies
I liked the various topics we covered in class.
Videos.
i liked that we were able to discuss what we were talking about in class every week. It allowed us to get a greater understanding of what was going on.
It's very discussion based, which is fun and I think an easier way to learn than just reading and powerpoints.
I liked his use of the media such as youtube to express his points that he was trying to tell.
I like the class discussion session on every Friday when the students participated with their amazing opinions.
The weekly discussions about the various subjects like Heavy Metal, horror, folk music, structuralism, etc.
I liked that the power points were accessible through Laulima.
I liked class discussions. It allowed for us to hear multiple perspectives and to pose questions we had.
I liked how the course really made me think about things that I see every day but dont really think about.
I liked Peiss's readings and the prompt for the midterm paper. discussions about gender and sexuality, the call of cthulu and alien abduction were interesting.
His slideshows were always prepared and ready. He made them very interesting
most of it
The use of YouTube videos and current popular culture.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
the readings were a bit mundane
Although the professor encouraged discussion, many of the students did not participate.
Some of the topics, like heavy metal.
I don't know how relevant the metal section of our course was to our culture. I understood that Olson has a great love for it and that is what he is writing his dissertation on, but it seemed to have not really pertained to American pop culture, in my opinion.
All the lessons had the same format.
I didnt like how the projects were given with little to no help. I didnt deserve the grade that I got for my assignment since I tried to ask questions but they werent answered in such a way that would make me understand but rather confuse me more.
I thought the idea of having everyone bring three questions to class so that discussions can be held about the students questions was good. However, I always had a hard time doing this homework because the questions that I might have come up because of the discussion. Even during discussions, I may not always come up with questions. Sometimes I didn't bring questions to class because I just couldn't think of any.
Pop-Quiz
The book. Why are we using a book with many examples and people from England? Discussion never really flowed and I thought there would have been more writing in class because it is a writing intensive class, not a discussion class. I also did not like the way we never really got to know each other in the class. Maybe if we knew each other a little better, I did not even know anyone's name, then the discussion might have worked a little bit better. I do not even think the instructor knew all of our names.
That we didn't get to cover MORE areas of pop culture and only focused on a few.
I was just not prepared for the material of this class
I think he should encourage people to participate more and get better discussions going by using participation points or calling on people more.
The majority of the readings from Storey's book were dry and uninteresting.
too much essays
The way the work was divided up. If the course was set up so we wrote a bunch of short papers, I think I would have enjoyed this class a little more.
15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
great
Excellent class.
Very good.
I enjoyed this class, it was interesting to aftually go into what we would consider American pop culture. I learned a lot about things I didn't have a lot of knowledge about prior to this class. I feel like most of the material we covered I use in my day to day life.
Interesting and a pretty good course.
I wouldnt recommend my friends taking this class because it didnt serve its purpose as American studies because it didnt focus on America but rather on popular culture.
This course is a great course to be in since it will help one to understand what a culture is about even though it is very complicated to describe what a culture is.
excellent. Very very good introductory course for the American Studies program.
Very boring. I thought this course was going to be very interesting and fun because I thought it would have gone more in-depth with American popular culture and focus on the main aspects of popular culture, not boring topics like UFOs, structuralism, poststructuralism, etc.
Great
I would recommend this class to others. Very fun and I learned a lot.
Great course, not for me
Great Class!
It was kind of boring to sit through lecture but overall informative.
good
Overall this course was very informative and opened up some new ideas to me that makes me think of popular culture completely different and made me realize that there is so much to popular culture.
16. Other comments:
I would try to encourage students more during discussion.
none
I dont like this class, I honestly regret signing up for a class that although was an easy writing intensive served no purpose in educating me with anything about American studies.
NONE

try to be more engaging and encourage participation. it might make the class more interesting.
