10. What did you like best about the course?
The best part of the course are the power points shown on the monitors, which show the main ideas of the current topic.
The class was geared toward creating genuine understanding of scientific concepts to carry with us to nurture throughout our whole life.
It not only gave us a broad insight about biology but related it to current events.
The free discussion allowed a range of knowledge exploration.
I liked there was something new to learn every time you came to class but then that was the downside too. When the exams came around, it was the volume of short story and since there was no study guide Ken required us to make our own which just another thing to worry about besides preparing for the test because most of the students including myself have other classes to pass without worrying to make a study guide about a test when not all the information is given to you yet in class lectures.
I like that its a very interactive and hands on class, which helped me learn concepts a lot better.
I liked the group work and presentations.
I liked that it was a small interactive class.
the chairs were pretty good
The students were very driven to learn and discuss the basics of biology.
The information
11. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
She can always speak more in class about the current topic or to help students understand the current topic.
n/a Norine was awesome 100%
Talk more and not to over explain the concepts. It confuses students.
Keep things moving to finish on time.
She can improve by being more assertive in the class. I like her demeanor of being helpful and answering our questions but if she was teaching the class by herself then i would definately be better off.
I think her teaching is fine :)
She doesn't need to change anything. She is always extremely helpful.
none.
give out heather stuff than candy
The course was on the surface very well put together. But when it got down town the class understanding and staying on pace, it was not successful. The course would of been better with more knowledge checks or small quizzes that really showed how much knowledge the class was retaining. A definite resource (book) would of helps the students to have a solid reference to correct answers and the topics we were covering.
Not as advanced grading and workload for a 101 course

36. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
(Question asked again?) She can always speak more in class about the current topic or to help students understand the current topic.
The pace was pretty fast and required a lot out of me being that I'm taking 6 classes and maintaining a job. Though I always learned from the homework, sometimes the load was discouraging for me.
Manage the discussion time wisely.
Less writing required outside of class.
She can cut down the amount of material on the exams and the amount of homework she asks of us; reading all the articles, watching videos, writing summary of articles to be sent in no matter if it gets chosen to be presented in class or not. Dont make the exams so long.
She doesn't need to improve anything! SHe is organized, speaks clearly, patient, knowledgable, and helpful!
None
explain why unicorns are real in the field of science.
Clearer communication with the other instructor Ken and agreed upon topics for the class would of really helped the class flow smoother and kept up the pace that was set at the beginning of the semester.
Too much information and amount of material for a 101 course

43. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The best part of the course is how the professors are very active in having students think about the current topic, helping them learn the material.
The fact we had two awesome inspirational passionate science instructors was phenomenal.
The iclicker quizes.
The passion of the teachers for the subject.
i liked the class discussions.
I like that the class acts as one big discussion group. This makes us hear others views on what we are learning
I really liked how the whole class felt involved, since we are always doing discussions, group work, and presentations.
That there were two people to explain confusing concepts.
Having to come to class every day and having such a great time learning stuff and doing cartwheels in the back of the class because of my excitement.
The class interaction and group setting was a positive difference to the lecture expectations of a Biology 101 class. Most of the students were very easy going and enjoyed learning with each other. It was nice to see a class get close and really get to know each other.

45. Other comments:
I'm so glad I enrolled in this course though I didn't have to.
More work for lower grades compared to the traditional form of this course. Probably better understanding though for most.
Dont make the exams so long.
Thank you Norine!
eh should definitely curve the tests when 80 percent of the class is failing them.
This class really didn't get its feet until the beginning of April. I think that this semester taught Norine Yeung and Kenneth Hayes a lot about expectations, student dependance, outside resources, and overall how this hybrid of biology and society class could (should) really function. I enjoy them as teachers and would defiantly take their classes again. It was very upsetting and hard to keep going at moments when the class was behind schedule and we all felt the expectations from our lessons were beyond reasonable. I know this class could of gone better and I could of retained more information but this was the situation and I'm very glad it got better at the end of the class.
