13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She gave out clear instruction and made learning fun and interesting. She encourages us to be active in class.
She made learning chinese very fun
She is very caring and encourages student to participate in class.
One of the best teachers that I have ever had.
She was very patient with us when teaching us the language. She is also very fair to us; helping us to do better in the class.
She has a passion for teaching! She puts her heart into it. She's thorough when explaining new forms and vocabulary. She's able to bring energy out of the students with orals and scripts.
Great with explanation and teaches us effectively.
She is very knowledgeable about her subjects and more. She is multi-talented and speaks many languages. She always encourages her students to participate in many of the dialogs, and find ways for you to understand.
Professor Hwang is a wonderful teacher. She is friendly, has a sense of humor, and gives students every opportunity to do well in her course. In addition to tests, she also assigns homework, oral presentations, and regular quizzes to help her students become immersed in Chinese. There was no aspect of the language that we didn't cover in class.
Professor Hwang never gives up on trying to teach us Chinese even though it was hard for some students. It's amazing how she teach us Chinese because I really think that's a hard language to teach and she is very organized and compassionate about teaching it.
She makes learning Chinese fun. it is a hard subject but she breaks it down and does activities that help us with reading writing and speaking. She cares about her students learning and gets on some peoples cases when they do not do well or come to class and is always open to help everyone out. She grades tests and papers really fast, we usually get it back the next day because we need it to study since we have to write over 100+ Chinese characters and know the meaning of it
Great personality, very friendly, this encourages all of us as her students to participate and achieve well in her class
teacher hwang's major strengths is helping students individually one by one. Also she makes the assignment understandable.
Very open to the fact that learning the language is very difficult. She offers plenty of extra credit in the form of spending more time with the Chinese language (i.e. watching and reviewing movies, practicing characters extra, participating in Chinese based activities outside of class)
She is always there when her students need her. She encourages class participation. She really is a very nice teacher.
Previous experiences wIth different types of students
Knew material really well
she knows the subject area very well and cares for her students progress in the course. Gives plenty of chances for assignments and extra credit!
Obviously, she knows the material very well. She also has an english vocabulary large enough to explain complicated concepts easily.
She let us interact with everyone in the class.
Humorous, knowledgeable about Chinese, obviously interested in the linguistic and details of the language.
Very good at teaching Chinese, and brings the classes together. Encouraging.
she knows her topic well. She is always prepared. She really cares about her students education. she is a wonderful teacher.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Nothing, great teacher.
None. :p.
To go at the pace of all the non fluent people in Chinese, and not the Students with Chinese background. Keeping up with them is very difficult.
I have no changes to suggest; I was very satisfied with everything in the course.
N/a.
No changes need to be made to Hwang Laoshi because she understands the curriculum very well and is very organized with teaching everything in order
none
Maybe be a little bit stricter on students who dont go to class. Also set a deadline for homework
Slower pace
Go step by step in the lesson. Slow down.
Try to discourage the "teacher's pet" from speaking over others during the free answer sessions.
Teach again! Dont leave
nothing
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She show's great concern for for her students. She's willing to take her time and help those falling behind or those who needed extra help.
She was very helpfullhelpfull
Helped with homework, pays attention to each individual student and make sure they participate. Follows through with students questions and is opened to ideas. Gives extra credit to students who really need it, and grades fairly.
She was patient and was very understanding of students who had no background in Chinese. She also offered multiple extra credit opportunities, which were also beneficial for us to learn more about the Chinese culture.
Haha. She constantly reminds the students about due dates for homework, test/quiz dates. Outside of class she gives great advice about anything.
She personally talks to them one on one, and even if they seem like they don't care or sleeping, she doesn't ignore them, and calls on them.
As previously stated, Professor Hwang gives students many opportunities to do well in her course, partially with many assignments, and also with chances for extra credit.
Professor Hwang showed many traits of concern/care for student. She showed it by giving us E-mails on how to do well on quizzes/exams and take it slowly to let us absorb Chinese in our own way.
She always reviews everything with us detail by detail. Like i said in the earlier question, she gets on students cases when they do not do well or show up to class and always offers help on homework during class time.
Responding to emails very promptly, and willing to listen if anything goes wrong
100%
She always checks up to make sure the students are progressing well. Always available if you need help.
She always seemed to care for her students, which is a great quality in a teacher.
Cared a lot for her students
tried to have students participate in class activities.
Ask each student who did not come to class where they were and if they have an excuse still give us points.
She allows you to ask her anything, and encourages participation.
Yes. More then any of my teachers.

Of course I do. If you want to learn chinese and your willing to put in the effort to study. She is the teacher you should take Chinese from. I never fully understood chinese until i took it from Hwang Laoshi.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Kind and caring teacher, also shows concern in students grades and participation.
Listen to all of Jay Chou's songs!!!
Best Chinese teacher
Professor Hwang was a great teacher to begin my Chinese studies with. I wish that she was teacher the next class, as well. :(
If possible, I would like to see her teach more often at KCC.
She was my favorite teacher all semester and I am sad that I will not be able to learn from her in future chinese language classes.
ta hen ku! She NEEDs to come back for the Fall Semester, she is such a good teacher, a lot of students, including myself were looking down on Chinese. But as a teacher she was able to make is Enjoy chinese language
hopes she teaches again.

You guys are screwing up by letting her go and not re-hiring her.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Being herself.
Fantastic teacher! Fair to all students and shows great concern in the well being of students. She notices and pays attention to the health of students and makes sure that they do well in class. She also goes over sections of the lesson if one or two of us do not understand.
fun, easy going
Hwang teaches students in a very clear, effective, and interesting way.
SHE'S IS AN AMAZING TEACHER! her concern for each students exemplifies her passion for teaching Chinese, she is always willing to help her students and encourages ALL of us to participate speak up for ourselves; our rights and our education!!!!! She always ensures that we understand the material thoroughly and gives good examples. She ALWAYS ENCOURAGES us to come to class and through those expressions, as students it drives us to do so. Whenever you need personal help, she's always willing to take the time out of her schedule to take care of her students questions and needs. Through her creativity and design in instructing her classes, we've all grown together, and share such a strong desire, respect and compassion for Chinese.
She was very helpful and considered our feeling at all times.
Excellent presentation of material; very understanding of individual learner needs; very accessible for students; teaching methods help to make learning the material more fun, interactive, & easier; she links the material in such a way through anecdotal background that make it "stick" better...
she knew her subject very well...i am very lucky to have her a teacher and as a mom...what i mean...is she always gives us examples on class to give us a better understanding. and she is always open for after class hours. and helping even out of school..she does alot of extra activities not only to boost grades but to know my classmates better...and this made the class fell like a family oriented area...
she is a very understading and caring professor who has the students best intersets at heart.
She is very helpful and supportive to our learning. She tries to motivate students to learn and make the class fun.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Be more aggressive while teaching, but you are still my favorite.
Nothing at all
No changes.
Continue to teach the way you do, your understanding and care for your students give us so much more motivation and ambition to excel
Teach more classes =)
none....
more chinese in class, maybe more types of collective learning techniques.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Always reminding us about deadlines and asked what we don't understand.
She offered the option of extra credits to all students, so that if we were failing, we had some chances that could help us.
Hwang showed concern by emailing you if you are absent from class. She showed concern also by giving us a report card to show our grades and any assignments we are missing. This has helped me improve my grade as well.
Always stopped us and caught us from ditching class, and always persuaded us into coming... She was always willing to help, and sit down with us personally if we didnt understand the material
Very understanding & accommodating; when she found out that we would not be able to take 201 next semester she was genuinely concerned (as it means that we will have to wait until Fall of 2011, leaving a large gap in between language classes, interfering with some students graduation schedule)...
afer class hours.... giving us her cell phone number to call her and ask for any help...no matter if 5 in the morning or even at midnight...
She loves her students as much as they love her.
She tried to help students by understanding them.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
YES BECAUSE SHE IS THE BEST!
I would most definitely recommend her to any student because she is just a thoughtful, and well prepared teacher.
yes She makes learning a language interesting excursions to practice Chinese
Definitely i would recommend her to students because her teaching skills are interesting, fun, and effective for my learning in Chinese.
YES!
Yes, definitely... Chinese is a very difficult language to learn (perhaps one of the most difficult offered at the University) and she makes it accessible... Her background in linguistics is invaluable...
i would recommend her for every student not because she is nice...but really taught me alot on school and as a person...
yes.... especially with students with no chinese background
Yes. I recommend her to students because even though Chinese is hard language to learn, she makes it interesting and fun. She is good teacher.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Xie Xie nin
Nothing
I WOULD REALLY LOVE IT IF SHE WAS ABLE TO STILL TEACH AT KAPIOLANI COMMUNITY COLLEGE NEXT SEMESTER AND THE SEMESTERS TO COME, ESPECIALLY FOR THE CHINESE 202 CLASS.
It's truly a shame that the students of KCC will be deprived of Hwang laoshis teaching expertise... Chinese is a difficult language to learn under the best of circumstances & I feel that every advantage you can provide to students undertaking this task should be offered... She is easily one of the best professors I have had and I am greatly saddened that I will not have the opportunity to take one more year of Chinese from her...
i just want to say i hope she dont work too hard...because all she care about is the students....and she pretty much delicate everything to the school...
she has done her best to teach us considering the distruption that was caused in her department that seriously hindered our learing but nobody in the department seemed to care about that except Monique Hwang.
She is very nice and good teacher. I wish she is teaching next semester...
18. Other comments:

Nothing
keep her for next semester
We will miss you so much! This year has been amazing, and Ive learned so much about Chinese, myself, and from each other the most! Its been a blessing and I'm so thankful for all the great bonds we've made as a class. I never had such a drive to succeed in college until I took your class last semester... Ive never been so motivated to succeed and I know I we'll all continue to do so! My Chinese isnt A++++ but I'll keep striving, and we wont let anyone hold us back from doing so! We will ALL see you in Taiwan! (: THANK YOU LAOSHI <3
we deserve a 201 class if not a great injustice has occured.
We will miss Hwang laoshi. If there is Chinese 201 next semester, it will motivate students more to study and try hard in the class. I think it is not fair for us not having Chinese 201 next semester. It will lower our motivation to learn Chinese in class. We have to wait until next year fall semester and i think we will forget Chinese by the time. I believe that people need to learn language continuouslly to improve it. Chinese is very important language nowadays, so school needs to consider it and make Chinese 201 next semester for students willing to take it.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Kind and helpful, good at recording all homework and test scores and keeping us up to date on thaT PROGRESS-that is nice and organized
Hwang Laoshi is always encouraging us to learn more and do our best. She teaches us the material in a fair manner. I enjoy this class very much and will be taking the 102 class next semester!
knows the subject area well
Knowing the subject very well.
Amazing teacher. Makes learning a difficult language easier.
She was very leniant and cared much about her students.
she is very nice and undersatnding that chinese is very difficult subject. She takes care of the students needs and is helfful when people don't understand.
mrs. Menq-ju Hwang major strengths as a teacher was her interactions with the students. we did a lot of outside class activity for extra points and was very suprised to see her there with us. she understood that this chinese class was at a very fast paste, and was willing to help us understand better.
She is fluent in the language and was clear that she was highly educated in the subject.
Her knowledge in the Chinese subject. She was always willing to help us understand material we had trouble with. Her teaching ethics were helpful, and beneficial. Chinese is a hard language to learn but she continued to help us & push us to excel & enjoy the course.
Incredibly considerate of students and will always encourage the students inside and outside of the classroom. Extremely helpful and balanced-- even with a heavy workload.
very clear and patient
She has an extensive knowledge of other subjects outside of Chinese that help to re-enforce learning (ie other languages, history, English grammar, word origins, etc.), she communicates your progress well and her assignments are well designed to maximize your learning experience. She is always available for students and she makes sure to address all students at their individual level of understanding. She made learning a very difficult language much easier and more pleasant. Extra credit assignments were available and related directly to learning Chinese. A++ professor!
Ability to connect with all students.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Be stronger in asking for attention and go through the workbook or homework part as part of the lesson.
Help us with workbook assignments just a bit more.
Find a way to slow down the lessons so everyone can keep up
Make more hands on activities pertaining to the text of lesson.
None.
Be strict to certain students, don't let them talk to you disrespectfully.
Maybe a little clarity with whats expected of us. I know this diffucult considering the degree of difficulty in this subject.
if there was any changes i could recommend, i would change the paste of understanding better in each chapter. it was hard to comperhend and intake so much information at one time. therefore, i would make each learning chapter a week longer. so when we take our exam it would be easier to understand, and to speak chinese slower when we are answering questions during the test.
no changes. keep up the great work!
More practice assignments with characters. Because that was the section we all are not too confident with.
NONE. Continue to be inspiring.
none
None... Excellent class!
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She aid personal attention to everyone in different ways
It is obvious that she wants us to succeed and learn the material so she shows concern by making sure we know the material for the lessons.;
getting students involved
By letting them know how they can improve, be more strict on writing and giving various opportunities to enhance their grade.
She always asked if we needed help and she was just always there for us.
She plans fun and interesting trips for us which I really enjoyed. The culture is as much a part of learning.
we had outdoor activitys for extra points to approve in our grades, and take the time to make sure shes there for us if we needed help to understand the material better.
She e-mailed us about all events and talked to us one by one.
Progress reports for grades, reminding us who hadnt turn in any homework, etc. yet..
Always willing to help outside of the classroom-- even if the days are her off days.
very active participation
Constantly tried to help students who didn't understand as well as others... Made sure to make extra time for students who had additional needs... Was very good about keeping students aware of their progress and what they needed to do to improve...
Recruited tutors to help students needing extra coaching.

Definitely! One of the best professors I've had & as I've said she made learning a difficult language not only bearable but pleasant and easier... She did everything in her power to help students and help them understand the lessons better...
Yes, I would recommend her to other students.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
All around caring person and fantastic teacher.
Chinese is hard
If there was to be another Chinese club, I would like to see more activities and a more unified committee and club. Such as having shirts, service projects and social events pertaining to what is being learn. Hopefully even fund-raising for club purposes. Getting a more hands on experience of the Chinese culture its self. :)
Best Chinese teacher.:P
I wish I could take 102 from her but I have to go back to Manao :(
keep up the good work and keep up with the interactions with students. she shocked me when i saw her come to our outside class room activity. its enjoyable to she her interact with us diffrently compared to other teachers out there.
One of the best teachers i had! because she provided a nice learning environment and she demonstrated that she was more than a teacher to us..she was also a friend.
You are the best!
very understanding to western culture
Excellent...
Good job.

Nadaaaa.
Chinese is the hardest class I have ever taken and I'm a senior already.
i enjoied the class!!
It was somewhat unfortunate that she got several "difficult" students in this assortment that were not as dedicated as the rest of the class but she did her best to assist them as well... She made the most of a bad situation and addressed all members of the class and their individual needs...

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Meung-Ju Hwang is an excellent teacher and I will reccomend her to all future classes. She has a good grasp of the topic and has a great ability to translate easily to students.
Hwang laoshi has a good relation with students and know how to encourage students to work harder and understand students without pressuring them to keep up with due dates etc. she makes student want to work to learn and not for the points/credit
she know her subject very well
every thig was good/.
most times she tried to listen to students speaking.
she really knew what she was talking about and helped alot for test.
She speaks loudly and clearly so that students can hear her pronunciation. She gives students opportunities to interact with one another through the chapter oral presentations. She brought in songs so that we could do something fun and learn about Chinese culture in a different way. She taught us some Chinese poetry so we could hear/see the beauty of Chinese poetry.
her knowledge on her teaching subject
She makes learning chinese extremely fun and there were many chinese related activities and class bonding activities outside of class time. She is very easy to talk to and has a fun and well planned class agenda.
She is very well verse in the subject area. She is able to bring relevant topics into the classroom that is not cover in the book.
She is able to answer any questions when needed. She has patience and made the class a comfortable learning enviornment.
In learning chinese in this CHNS202 class, it was very fun experience learning from Menq-Ju Hwang because she knew the subject area very well. Whenever we had a new lesson, she knew much about the learning objectives that were needed to meet and a lot more.
She is organized, she makes class fun with Chinese Bingo games, and prizes(sweets & candy), she assigns regular homework from the workbook for our practice.
Really friendly teacher and active with students.
She is a very hands on teacher. She knows her subject area very well. She is also available to her students outside of class as well.
Hwang lao shi was very clear and loud, and definitely knew the subject area well. Shes very kind and fair to all students and encouraged everyone to participate. She also plans outside activities with the class to have leisure hikes and lunches to get to know her students more personally.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None
nothing, perfectly fine.
i think she should do more active beside the workbook
nothing
nothing the class was very good
When we do vocabulary, if she could say the word twice and have us repeat it twice, I think it would be very helpful. Many times we don't know how to pronounce the word so it would help us to feel more confident. I think the more we can repeat after her, the better it will be, even for reading sentences. If we could incorporate more fun things and real life material in class, that would be great. If we could learn more songs, learn about Chinese food, Chinese pop stars, actors, dramas, etc. that would be wonderful as well. If students were encouraged to use their Chinese as much as possible outside of class as well as inside of class, I think it would improve everyone's Chinese. If it were possible to buy the CDs, it would be wonderful so that we could listen to them in the car or on our iPods. The more we hear it, the easier it will be for us to reproduce it.
slow down the lesson a little. it is a little too fast
Most likely be a little more strict on cheating policy=p
Lower the extra credit assignment. Sometime there is too much points given to the class. The class should be fair to students that are unable to do the extra credit assignment. Also, stop answering certain student's question during exam time.
I think it will be more effective if character workbook was included with the text and work book. That way students will better their character writing.
For any changes, I suggest to ease up on Extra Credit points given
Even tho' it helps the students out by giving extra credit, these opportunities should be limited and not done excessively. This is because by giving away so much extra credit for attending outside events, the students are not really improving their Chinese learning skills.
nothing
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She keeps the class involved through class participation exercises
allowing extra credit
yes
she helped out alot inside and outside of class
She always let us know that she was available if we needed help. She promoted goodwill among the students by encouraging them to attend extracurricular Chinese activities to enhance their learning about Chinese culture. For those who needed help, she always
by asking for there whereabouts and asking for email before class if they are going to be sick
She stay after class to chat with students. She cares about past chinese- language experience and where in china we have been to. She plans many chinese activities to help us learn more of the chinese culture.
She always try to have a conversation with the students during class to see how each of us is doing. She tries her hardest to create class activity that will help student practice Chinese outside of the class.
She is always helpful and always respect her students.
She showed concern by giving the students a study guide right before every test to inform what to study. This is a big positive as it really was beneficial to all students and really showed when tests results were handed back. She also engages in lots of conversation using the Chinese language which gives us a chance to make use of what we learn.
By giving them numerous opportunities to earn extra credit.
She is there is students need assistance.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes, easy to understand and provides a good atmosphere for learning
definitely yes
yes because this class is fun and easy
yes because she was a teacher that cared
Yes, I would recommend Hwang Laoshi because she really cares for her students and she speaks loudly and clearly. She believes that hearing comes first, then speaking, then reading, and then writing. I agree with this idea.
yes, because her classes are fun
Yes I would. I had fun and actually looked forward to class everyday, knowing I will learn something.
Yes, you will have to work but you do learn a lot. Highly recommended
Yes, I will recommend this teacher to other students because you will enjoy learning in her class and it is always productive and fun.
Yes. This is her first-year as a KCC professor and from my personal experience; she if very knowledgeble. She is very informed about the Chinese culture and language which makes learning from her a very fun experience. She also tries to change the classes up and not to make class the same routine as every week.
I would recommend her because many students don't get a class where they can earn extra credit.
I would definitely recommend Meng-Ju Hwang to other students because she knows her subject area well and she demonstrates concerns for her students.
Definitely if they want to learn more mandarin and a little more about the chinese culture. Chinese 202 with Ms. Hwang was a very fun class, but at the same time, I learned a lot and improved on my mandarin speaking.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
one of the best chinese teachers

thanks
none
Highly recommended if you really want to study chinese.
Thank you for always being so considerate when we're unable to attend class and for allowing make-up work.
I think she went overboard with giving extra credit.
She is very hands on with her students. Meng-Ju Hwang is very helpful in and outside of the classroom. I believe she is one of the best professors at KCC. She provides her students with multiple opportunities to succeed in class. Besides learning in class, students are also given opportunities to learn outside of the classroom through various activities.
