7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| The knowledge and material presented in this course was an eye-opener and probably the
most valuable aspect of this course. |
| insight into an emerging scholarship that completely altered my view on
Hawaii-US political relationship as well as Hawaiian history. i feel this
information is invaluable and will completely change Hawaii when word
spreads. I feel lucky to have been able to take this course and learn what I
did. This course should be mandatory for all. |
| ALL OF IT, THE INFORMATION WE LEARNED IS VERY RELEVANT TO HAWAII'S HISTORY
THROUGH TO THE PRESENT. THE WHOLE CLASS WAS VERY INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING
TO ME. GOOD CRITICAL THINKING CLASS. |
| A thorough look into Dr. Keanu Sai's work as well as presentation made by Dr. Sai himself. A closer
more in depth look at the Politics that are being played out in Hawaiʻi despite the legal analysis of
Hawaiʻis particular situation. |
| Learning about Hawaii's TRUE HISTORY |
| The knowledge that Willy conveyed over to the students. |
| All were most valuable in this class |
| Class discussion |
| Hard to say what part of this course was more valuable because it was so balanced. I think the way Willy taught this class with a variety of dissertations, guest speaker, open discussion, class participation of video clips and even allowing us students to facilitate our readings is what kept us all so intrigued. On couple occasions when a students presentation could have gone south, Willy jumped in and made sure no one lost focus or felt awkward. I know for my self all I do is talk about this class with my friends. This class is just so right on I have loved it. |
| Learning about the correct history of the place I've always lived is invaluable, and Kauai did it in the best way possible. |
| The discussions in the course were the most valuable. Just about everyone would speak up and discuss or debate a particular topic that we were talking about. I also feel that the class facilitation was one of the best parts of the class because I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the reading, present it to the class, and spark discussion. It definitely kept the class very interesting, as well as allowed for us to have a voice in the class and speak our minds about whatever Hawaiian Politics we were talking about. Very enjoyable course. |
| Learning about Keanu Sai's dissertation especially because it is literature that many are unaware of. |
| It offered a new perspective on a misunderstood subject. |
| The articles an the presemtation from keanu sai. Plus the knowledge of prof willie |
| i learned a lot of information concerning Hawaii's history, most of which has been concealed and
misguided for over one-hundred years. To learn this information has proven to be most valuable
and rewarding. I will take what I learned and apply it everywhere I go. |
| New ideas and concepts |
| I think the most valuable aspect of the course was reading Dr. Sai's dissertation. The dissertation was ground breaking and provocative. I also enjoyed Dr. Sai's live presentation in class. It was also a a great learning experience having our class mates present their own media. It was very refreshing to learn through an array of diverse materials. |
| The journals were helpful, especially when it came time for the midterm. |
| I think the legal aspect of the course was most valuable concerning international law. |
| The small class size was helpful in being able to answer any questions that arose from any
confusion. The readings via PDF were valuable in not having to buy a book. The reading itself, the
content, and what we learned were most valuable because of how I associate myself with Hawai'i and
the culture. |
|
|
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Nothing. I learned something important from each reading we did and this was
reinforced by Q&a as well as student presentations and journals. |
| I think that class is too, contrasting to the way that Hawaiʻi is working, and I feel it is mainly, Dr.
Sai's legal approach vs Hawaiian activism. There should be more of a comprehensive out look on
how the two sides, could work together. I agree whole heartedly that there is much ground to be
gain with the legal approach to Hawaiʻi, I also believe, for the betterment of Hawaiʻi and its unique
position, we need to take an angle where both sides are supported. An objective class and outlook
on Hawaiʻi Politics. |
| nothing, this class was awesome! |
| For me personally, it was the journal writing. But I guess that is better than a research paper or two. |
| none |
| None |
| nothing,I feel finally someone is teaching us the truth and I thank him for that |
| I think everything we discussed was valuable, maybe except for my Donald Trump presentation because that guy is a clown. |
| Mostly everything we learned in the course were valuable in its own way. |
| none |
| nothing really. |
| The journals. Class discussion was more enjoyable. |
| the media presentations- some of them were insightful, but some of them (i felt) didn't have much relevance to the course- it just mentioned Hawaii. |
| no comment |
| I would not devalue an aspect of this course |

|
| As what we learned (discourse of occupation in Hawaii) is an emerging
scholarship there is little in terms of material and other courses covering
the subject. I hope as more academics learn this info that will change
because I'd like to see this information trickle into other courses (history,
law, and so on) |
| Having taken "Problems in the Pacific" course as well, there is a more comprehensive way to discuss
the matter that Hawaiʻi is in. This is a Politics class, and although I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Sais
analysis on law in Hawaiʻi, as it give Hawaiʻi a firm foundation. I do agree that Hawaiʻi minds are
colonized, which plays into Politics in Hawaiʻi. Again, in stead of pinning the two against each other,
like they usually are, why not have concepts of these two that would work to frame a better Hawaiʻi. |
| Great teacher great class! |
| I wish Willy immense good luck in completing his PhD writing. |
| Great teacher |

| this was the best class. I too |
| Kauai is a super good teacher and I hope that he gets his PHD one day soon because he deserves it. ANYONE should take this class, very chill and very informative. |
| I enjoyed this course because it directly pertained to me and everyone else since we all live here. I am from the mainland, and we learn nothing in schools there about Hawaii, aside from the fact that it is our 50th state. You can tell that Willy Kauai enjoys teaching, and loves the subject matter. All of our discussions are very interesting, and he asks questions about politics that I would never think to question. Very fun and interesting course, I would recommend it! |
| Willy knows his stuff. His knowledge is vast. He is effective in teaching, but yet is still relaxed,
therefore we are less stressed. i enjoyed the class and will spread the word and encourage others to
enroll in POLS 301. Hopefully Willy is teaching. |
| This is an engaging and interesting subject and should continue to be offered. It has brought to
light issues of which I was unaware. I feel the instructor showed great poise and knowledge in
teaching a difficult and at times emotional subject. |
| Well done...well done indeed |
| I think the instructor could have been more organized and prompt with the class schedule, presentation dates, and responding to emails. I felt the midterm was a lot of work for such a small meager amount of points. I also wished that the journals could have been submitted through laulima or via email to save trees. But overall it was a great course and definitely in my top 5 political science classes. The instructor was excellent in his communication and seemed passionate engaging in class discussions. He was very helpful in helping students in navigating their presentations and helped answer any unclear questions. The instructor's knowledge and lively personality helped the make class a fun learning experience. I would highly recommended taking any courses with this instructor. |
| No comment. |
| The discourse of occupation, covered in this class, is essential to the history of Hawai'i. I believe
more classes with this curriculum should be offered for people to take and become educated
through another historical viewpoint. |

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Willy was very flexible and understanding to work loads. I learned a lot from his class and was able to use the information in other classes. |
| the presentations he did and the readings that were assigned and also the class projects that were assigned to the students to share wtht the class. |
| I believe that the information given about the Hawaiian kingdom and the laws in hawaii were very valuable as it allowed students to understand what's happening in Hawaii. |
| Group discussions and readings. |
| the readings and journals |
| I think the critical analysis in which Dr. Kauai helped us develope was super helpful in understand and grasping concepts from other countries and regions that we wouldn't normally look at with a Sociological perspective. It helps perpetuate a less bias way of thinking and as a student you want to be as objective as you can when listening to or reading about issues that don't necesarily impact you. |
| Learning that politics is envoled with mainly every part of or lives. |
| the information set forth by the professor. |
| ability to talk with a graduate student |
| Just learning a new set of knowledge kept me intersted not only in his class but also kept me motivated throughout the semester. |
| The |
| Class discussions were organized so that everyone could participate and express their opinions. |
| The final project about research on a political issue. |
| The Hawaii Sovereignty unit and the basis of Politics. |

| Mahalo Willy! |
| The teacher was very helpful and informative and I thought he did an awesome job.:) |
| It needs more spice. People need to know each other more...group project? |
| I think Mr. Kauai should be acknowldge as a Maverick in the sense that he is more closely related to us as student and doesn't not treat us with that barrier "me Tarzan, you Jane." I think as a professor he can empathize towards the youth a lot more and be so influential because of his natural character and respect for others. |
| Intresting subject you really need to know politics to get whats going on in the world. |
| awesome professor! |
| Thanks for posting the readings online and not making us buy books. |
