13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
I really enjoyed learning hawaiian culture even though this was all online. I really did like his teaching skills.
He's a great teacher and is concerned about how well the students do. He has a passion for the subject and for informing others about Hawaii and it's culture.
Professor Kauai;s knowledge about Hawaiian History and Politics were an integral for the success of the class.
Really pushes the students to the best of their knowledge. Incredible teacher, I have learned a lot by taking this class.
Empathy
Follow-through Subject-matter knowledge
Professor Kauai knows the content very well and was able to generate questions for his students to talk about. He would promptly have the new material readily available by the time the new week rolled around.
Interactions with the students, and prepared readings and videos for the class.
Willy's strengths as a teacher is that he is very knowledgeable about Hawaiian studies. He knows how to present our discussions with wording that makes you think. He creates our discussions to see how we understood the material, speak our mind and see how our classmates understood the information.
Since this is a online class that I cannot understand the professor very well, but I think the professor did a very good job on the learning material and organization of the course.
Attention to detail.
Kept in constant communication with the class. Syllabus was easy to follow. Was organized.
He was really knowledgeable on the subject area (Hawaiian Studies). I think the best part of this class was that he wanted students to form their own opinions on the reading material even question it if necessary. This type of teaching method is quite rare in a class and I support it. I realize that students might have a harder time forming a conclusion for themselves over just looking up an answer for a question in a textbook. This is the normal so it is harder to think more philosophically but finding an answer for yourself is what the purpose of college is supposed to be (in my opinion). I may have a different view looking at how education should be taught.
He has been upfront and kept discussions respectful about some very touchy subjects. I really liked the organization of this class. Knowing which day each week our assignment were due greatly assisted me in forming my schedule around class.
Mr. Kauai is a very down to earth teacher who can communicate well with his students. His class is very conductive o learning as it includes many critical thinking assignments, along with readings. He is very fair as to respect the different opinions of different students. I respect his personality as a teacher, not just because he is my professor.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
None because I really liked Mr. Kauai's lessons and was able to do them effectively and on time.
None, I believe the class is well managed by the Professor.
No changes
None
Like most of the required readings, instead of requiring the purchase of the last textbook; offer it as an option. In addition, make the option of borrowing it (perhaps from a UH System Library) available to those in need; as well. To allow for more creativity--possibly allowing students to choose their own topics (or from a list of topics--with respect to each week's online discussion assignments). Maybe include a collaborative element in the course. Perhaps technology-based discussions--such as Blackboard Collaborate; or even face-to-face discussions (in lieu of written submissions). During the semester we viewed a lot of mediated videos, which were assigned. It would be interesting if students could choose some of the media--either individually or collectively.
Maybe less discussion posts and more quizzes possibly? More ways to earn points in the class?
no changes
N/A
The only change I would like to see is more time in advance to do the pop quizzes. He only gave us a short notice on one of the pop quizzes and it just so happened I was feeling very ill due to a cold and missed this quiz. This deeply upset me because I turn in all the assignments, respond to all the discussions and have completed they other quizzes before so I didn't want this one to affect my grade.
None, hes doing great.
I believe that he wanted more class participation and discussion and not just a cookie cutter answer to a question. I realize that this is an entry level course so majority of the students may be right out of high school and might not be ready to have to think for themselves but I think it is also a good step in getting students to view things from a different perspective early. I think students may feel intimidated if they speak their opinion in fear that the instructor may form a biased view of the student and it affects their grade. I know this is an offense but students still feel intimidated. With text, emotions may get misinterpreted of the writer.
There is another way that the discussion forum can be posted, where each response can be responded to. It was used in another class of mine, and seemed to encourage more dual sided conversation. I loved the topics of our discussion postings, but would have enjoyed being able to respond to the posts of others in a simpler fashion.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
If I needed help with homework, I would email him and he would be able to respond on time or when he was available.
When I went through some personal issues and couldn't submit one assignment on time, I emailed the Professor and he was very understanding about my situation and allowed me to submit the assignment later. He was very nice and really understanding.
His teaching
He responded promptly, thoroughly, and fairly to correspondence.
He set up reminders for students to stay on top of their work.
He explains how he expects us to think about assignments every week.
He sent emails to inform us about assignments and readings and provided feedback about discussions.
Willy shows concern by promptly responding to any questions or comments we have. I know that he cares for his students because he will always there with an answer the times I have had a question about something.
Students needs, got what the needed.
When students had trouble with some of the wording on the tests, the students were allowed to seek advice from other students. I also had confusion during one of the spellings of an island and he resolved the confusion in a professional manner.
Yes, he was very understanding when I had medical issues, and respectful of the viewpoints expressed in class.
Mr. Kauai gives ample notice for assignments and helps to answer questions. He will give suggestions on assignments and always encourages the class discussions by saying things like, "I enjoyed reading last weeks discussions". It made me feel as if he really had interest in our opinions.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes i would because hes a good Kumu and i had a great time learning more about hawaiian culture.
Yes he's a pretty fair teacher
Yes, he is really knowledgeable about Hawaiian Culture.
definitely
Yes
Yes. This was my first Hawaiian Studies college course, so I possessed little knowledge; but a lot of ambition to learn. Professor Kauai provided students with opportunities to learn, and to expand upon their existing knowledge.
Yes I would, if they are looking to take a course online. It is straightforward and the objectives are easy to understand.
yes he made the online course understandable.
Yes, he seems like a pretty cool teacher, and the class is interesting.
Yes, I would and I already have recommended Willy's class to other students. A lot of students like myself are worried about taking an online class because they don't see how they can learn or if someone will really be on the other side there to help them if any questions come up. I already know that Willy is always there for students, so one of my classmates asked me what class they should take for next semester for Hawaiian studies and I told her "take Willy's class," and I explained why.
I will recommend Willy Daniel Kauai to students because the course is organized very well and the material in this course is also very interesting.
Yeah, good class, very informative, and very helpful.
Yes. He is organized. Hawaiian studies and history is not a favorable subject for me, but the material he presented was very interesting.
Yes, because like the answer to question #13, he wants students to form their own opinions on the reading material even question it if necessary. This type of teaching method is quite rare (at least when I was going to school) in a class and I support it.
Yes! I had two favorite classes this semester, and this was one of them!
I would definitely recommend Mr. Kauai to other students. He is very helpful and creates a very nice class atmosphere.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Thank you for being such a great Kumu (:
This class has enriched my knowledge about Hawaiian Culture and History. I am very thankful to Professor Kauai for his teaching.
Not applicable.

I can tell he is a very educated teacher, and I only wish the class wasn't online so I could meet him! I always find it very inspiring when I meet such an educated and well-informed teacher.
Good teacher.
A class like Hawaiian Studies/history I assume may raise mixed emotional responses from students. I'm sure there are times where tension and conflicts of interests may arise but I'm appreciative that he mentions such dilemmas throughout the course and handles the opinions of others professionally.
Mahalo.
18. Other comments:
This class is an On-Line one, and I could manage time and do my assignments. I think it was a good experience, since it was my very first time taking classes On-Line.
Thank you.
keep up the good work Willy!
Thank you for a clear online course. It is hard to convey messages with words sometimes but I found this class easy to follow and without confusion or frustration.
If you have a chance, take his class! I did not cringe every time an assignment was due.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I think the most valuable aspect of the course was reading Dr. Sai's dissertation. The dissertation was ground breaking and provocative. I also enjoyed Dr. Sai's live presentation in class. It was also a a great learning experience having our class mates present their own media. It was very refreshing to learn through an array of diverse materials.
The knowledge that Willy conveyed over to the students.
insight into an emerging scholarship that completely altered my view on Hawaii-US political relationship as well as Hawaiian history. i feel this information is invaluable and will completely change Hawaii when word spreads. I feel lucky to have been able to take this course and learn what I did. This course should be mandatory for all.
Learning about Hawaii's TRUE HISTORY
A thorough look into Dr. Keanu Sai's work as well as presentation made by Dr. Sai himself. A closer more in depth look at the Politics that are being played out in Hawaiʻi despite the legal analysis of Hawaiʻis particular situation.
I think the legal aspect of the course was most valuable concerning international law.
The knowledge and material presented in this course was an eye-opener and probably the most valuable aspect of this course.
ALL OF IT, THE INFORMATION WE LEARNED IS VERY RELEVANT TO HAWAII'S HISTORY THROUGH TO THE PRESENT. THE WHOLE CLASS WAS VERY INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING TO ME. GOOD CRITICAL THINKING CLASS.
The journals were helpful, especially when it came time for the midterm.
The articles an the presemtation from keanu sai. Plus the knowledge of prof willie
Learning about the correct history of the place I've always lived is invaluable, and Kauai did it in the best way possible.
It offered a new perspective on a misunderstood subject.
Hard to say what part of this course was more valuable because it was so balanced. I think the way Willy taught this class with a variety of dissertations, guest speaker, open discussion, class participation of video clips and even allowing us students to facilitate our readings is what kept us all so intrigued. On couple occasions when a students presentation could have gone south, Willy jumped in and made sure no one lost focus or felt awkward. I know for my self all I do is talk about this class with my friends. This class is just so right on I have loved it.
The small class size was helpful in being able to answer any questions that arose from any confusion. The readings via PDF were valuable in not having to buy a book. The reading itself, the content, and what we learned were most valuable because of how I associate myself with Hawai'i and the culture.
Learning about Keanu Sai's dissertation especially because it is literature that many are unaware of.
Class discussion
New ideas and concepts
All were most valuable in this class
The discussions in the course were the most valuable. Just about everyone would speak up and discuss or debate a particular topic that we were talking about. I also feel that the class facilitation was one of the best parts of the class because I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the reading, present it to the class, and spark discussion. It definitely kept the class very interesting, as well as allowed for us to have a voice in the class and speak our minds about whatever Hawaiian Politics we were talking about. Very enjoyable course.
i learned a lot of information concerning Hawaii's history, most of which has been concealed and misguided for over one-hundred years. To learn this information has proven to be most valuable and rewarding. I will take what I learned and apply it everywhere I go.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
For me personally, it was the journal writing. But I guess that is better than a research paper or two.
Nothing. I learned something important from each reading we did and this was reinforced by Q&a as well as student presentations and journals.
nothing, this class was awesome!
I think that class is too, contrasting to the way that Hawaiʻi is working, and I feel it is mainly, Dr. Sai's legal approach vs Hawaiian activism. There should be more of a comprehensive out look on how the two sides, could work together. I agree whole heartedly that there is much ground to be gain with the legal approach to Hawaiʻi, I also believe, for the betterment of Hawaiʻi and its unique position, we need to take an angle where both sides are supported. An objective class and outlook on Hawaiʻi Politics.
no comment
the media presentations- some of them were insightful, but some of them (i felt) didn't have much relevance to the course- it just mentioned Hawaii.
none
I think everything we discussed was valuable, maybe except for my Donald Trump presentation because that guy is a clown.
nothing,I feel finally someone is teaching us the truth and I thank him for that
I would not devalue an aspect of this course
Mostly everything we learned in the course were valuable in its own way.
None
The journals. Class discussion was more enjoyable.
none
nothing really.

16. Other comments:
I think the instructor could have been more organized and prompt with the class schedule, presentation dates, and responding to emails. I felt the midterm was a lot of work for such a small meager amount of points. I also wished that the journals could have been submitted through laulima or via email to save trees. But overall it was a great course and definitely in my top 5 political science classes. The instructor was excellent in his communication and seemed passionate engaging in class discussions. He was very helpful in helping students in navigating their presentations and helped answer any unclear questions. The instructor's knowledge and lively personality helped the make class a fun learning experience. I would highly recommended taking any courses with this instructor.
I wish Willy immense good luck in completing his PhD writing.
As what we learned (discourse of occupation in Hawaii) is an emerging scholarship there is little in terms of material and other courses covering the subject. I hope as more academics learn this info that will change because I'd like to see this information trickle into other courses (history, law, and so on)
Great teacher great class!
Having taken "Problems in the Pacific" course as well, there is a more comprehensive way to discuss the matter that Hawaiʻi is in. This is a Politics class, and although I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Sais analysis on law in Hawaiʻi, as it give Hawaiʻi a firm foundation. I do agree that Hawaiʻi minds are colonized, which plays into Politics in Hawaiʻi. Again, in stead of pinning the two against each other, like they usually are, why not have concepts of these two that would work to frame a better Hawaiʻi.
Kauai is a super good teacher and I hope that he gets his PHD one day soon because he deserves it. ANYONE should take this class, very chill and very informative.
This is an engaging and interesting subject and should continue to be offered. It has brought to light issues of which I was unaware. I feel the instructor showed great poise and knowledge in teaching a difficult and at times emotional subject.
this was the best class. I too
The discourse of occupation, covered in this class, is essential to the history of Hawai'i. I believe more classes with this curriculum should be offered for people to take and become educated through another historical viewpoint.
Willy knows his stuff. His knowledge is vast. He is effective in teaching, but yet is still relaxed, therefore we are less stressed. i enjoyed the class and will spread the word and encourage others to enroll in POLS 301. Hopefully Willy is teaching.

Great teacher
I enjoyed this course because it directly pertained to me and everyone else since we all live here. I am from the mainland, and we learn nothing in schools there about Hawaii, aside from the fact that it is our 50th state. You can tell that Willy Kauai enjoys teaching, and loves the subject matter. All of our discussions are very interesting, and he asks questions about politics that I would never think to question. Very fun and interesting course, I would recommend it!
Well done...well done indeed

The Hawaii Sovereignty unit and the basis of Politics.
the presentations he did and the readings that were assigned and also the class projects that were assigned to the students to share wtht the class.
the readings and journals
Group discussions and readings.
Willy was very flexible and understanding to work loads. I learned a lot from his class and was able to use the information in other classes.
I believe that the information given about the Hawaiian kingdom and the laws in hawaii were very valuable as it allowed students to understand what's happening in Hawaii.
The
the information set forth by the professor.
Just learning a new set of knowledge kept me intersted not only in his class but also kept me motivated throughout the semester.
Learning that politics is envoled with mainly every part of or lives.
The final project about research on a political issue.
I think the critical analysis in which Dr. Kauai helped us develope was super helpful in understand and grasping concepts from other countries and regions that we wouldn't normally look at with a Sociological perspective. It helps perpetuate a less bias way of thinking and as a student you want to be as objective as you can when listening to or reading about issues that don't necesarily impact you.
ability to talk with a graduate student
Class discussions were organized so that everyone could participate and express their opinions.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

it was all pretty useful because of the subject being on Hawaii

Mahalo Willy!
The teacher was very helpful and informative and I thought he did an awesome job.:)
awesome professor!
Intresting subject you really need to know politics to get whats going on in the world.
I think Mr. Kauai should be acknowldge as a Maverick in the sense that he is more closely related to us as student and doesn't not treat us with that barrier "me Tarzan, you Jane." I think as a professor he can empathize towards the youth a lot more and be so influential because of his natural character and respect for others.
