19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
Perhaps find a way to integrate a field trip in the schedule, although it is difficult given the time period that is being studied. thats all i would change. the course was awesome.
more lecture; less video
This course takes on a lot in the time period that it covers with not enough class time to cover all of it. I would probably give more time to covering all the information needed to each subject without jumping into each time period everyday.
Nothing, everything was just the way i would do it
If i was teaching this course i would write down important notes for students and go over them with the class.
Keep up the good work
This teacher likes to read a script word for word. this way of teaching bores the student into not wanting to listen. with a little more live in the lectures, the students will pay more attention, and get more interactive.
Nothing it was great.
There isn't much of anything I would change if I were teaching this course. I learned the material that was set before me and honestly believe that my classmates did as well. The pace was perfect, the subject matter was interesting, and Professor James was competent in every way. The only thing I could suggest is that we go a little more in depth into some of the time periods that we studied other than that I am completely satisfied with my time in History 151.
not much, it was all good, especially ther writing assignments
well i would improve on explaining the work clearly and come up different teaching techniques
Nothing. You are doing a really good job!!
i would want to do more artistic projects to get more of a feel of the culture of the different world societies.
a. field trips b. teaching style
I would improve nothing other than when doing study sessions to do it all together.
It was fine as it was.
I would change nothing, it was a very informative course.
Histroy itself is a challenging subject for most students to understand and remember compared to other subjects. I would make the lecture more exciting either by actions, vocally, or present pictures that are associated with such historical events that are discussed.
I would like to be able to use notes for the quizzes.
I wouldn't change the teachings. Maybe better geography maps would be helpful.
I would have liked to finish the movies we started. I have never seen Alexander so watching some of it in class was great but I was left wondering what happened. I couldn't stop thinking about the movie so I rented it. It would have been nice to finish it the next class and if it took too much time from learning or study guides, it could have bee homework.
I would not change a thing, it is perfect the way it is.
Pictures, videos, stories, artifacts would help stimulate the imagination. One or two more essay assignments. The essays we did were fun.
add more activities and make it a little more interesting.
I would have loved to see more pictures and hear interesting stories of each place.
i would change the know of the total who what where when why how in the topic as long as u get the main point of da five u shud get full credit
nothing
Nothing at all
I wouldn't do anything to improve the course. Mr. James was a great instructer.
more fast pace
nothing
I would leave it the way it is. Gabe was an excellent teacher. I learned so much in his class. It is my favorite class this semester.
I wouldn't change anything. Mr. James did a great job. I really enjoyed his class.
I would improve it by including more questions on the quizzes or avoid giving such a broad selection of terms to study in the first place. For students that aren't good test takers, it would give them a better chance to get a good grade.
This is not biased, but I would not change a thing!
Powerpoints would help a great deal in terms of identifying historical points associated with the class.
Watching more videos.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
I appreciate the informative videos, the instructors enthusiasm, emphasis on group work, and lecture outlines and notes. all of these helped my understanding of the course. it helped emphasize the important parts of the material.
I liked that the teacher encouraged student participation by asking students questions regarding subject matter. I sometimes felt that the teacher needed to make the point of the videos more explicit.
His teaching methods are excellent. His group workshops help a lot. I start to understand each subject more when I can hear what everyone else has to say..
Direct and easy to comprehend, i could follow the along in the course without struggling to keep up
I think he is a fair teacher who wants to see his students succeed.
Good teacher understood what was being taught
good job
overall the sources of information that the teacher uses are very interesting. people pay close attention to the movies, both lecture/documentary videos, and fictional recreations of events(Hollywood).
Great and makes things easy and clear.
Professor James is one of those unique people that was meant for teaching. He is calm, assertive, intelligent, capable, and motivating. I believe he truly cares for each of his students and his love and knowledge of history shines through in his teachings. He was very fair in grading, his pace wasn't too fast or too slow and I plan to take classes from him in the future.
i would appreciated more of a spoken word instead of a reading text from a teacher...
well its okay. Nothing bad. It would be better if the instructing could be more exciting instead of always reading from the text.
You were very precise and to the point about the lessons and lectures
i thought they were very good.
a lot of information was gathered throughout taking this course, not my style to learn from but good content.
I thought that he is a good teacher and knows what he's talking about.
Great teacher and effective instruction.
He is very enthusiastic when going about teaching his lectures. I love his teaching style and learned mant things from this class.
This semester i experienced the teaching method to be video and lecture. I cant imagine many other methods to teach history. Maybe the lecture could be intertwined with the section it present itself in the book, it could be pointed out in the book specifically. Maybe, more student interaction in some way, allowing for an open discussion of explanation why such event occured. To recap and keep past events fresh in students mind.
John is an excellent teacher full of information. He is very kind and respectful towards all of his students. He is also very helpful and he is what makes going to college enjoyable.
i think that the teacher is a great teacher. I gain a greater understanding for the subject.
I enjoyed the teaching methods of the teacher. His teaching was well explained and context were provided.
It was awesome! He made the class interesting. For once in my life I was actually interested in history.
I think Mr. James is a very good teacher he is fun and makes history interesting. His methods are great and he is always willing to help his students.
Gabe did a super job keeping the class on course. We covered a ton of material and stayed on schedule. He is very easy to understand and very understanding of the students' needs and challenges.
i thought that his teaching methods were a little boring, but then again it was straight to the point, as well as helpful.
he did a good job
absolutely wonderful...he was very fair and listened well... he also offered help with any questions or problems without hesitation.
His method was intersting. He made us think and write a lot.
They were great. He knew all of his information and when he didn't he wasn't afraid to admit so.
thorough
His teaching methods are really good and I think most professors should teach this way all the time.
Very fun and the way he explains the subject is very informing.
He is very helpful; he teaches using visuals, as well as plenty of interesting lectures. I am taking his 152 class next semester.
I like his teaching methods. He spoke very thoroughly, kept everyone involved, and was always willing to answer questions.
Gabe is an extremely patient, lenient, compassionate and over-all kind person! He is an amazing human and an awesome instructor. He is very articulate and knowlegable in his field. He presents the learning material in an intersting and attention-grabbing manner that for me, appealed to all of my fellow classmates.
good
It was really effective. He was sure to have an outline and address all we needed to know for test.

22. Other comments:
I appreciate the teacher and his methods. i feel i have learned a lot about history from this class. i also appreciated the way he balanced the spiritual aspects of things. he did not emphasize creation over evolution, or vice versa.
Great class.. I actually like history more after taking this class.
None
good job
I would just like to say thank you to Professor James and the whole UH and HCC community for making my semester a great one.
he has very good, positive attitude, sense of humor (it makes the class fun to coming to...)
i hope i have the same instructor agein someday.

Good job! I learned a lot in this class!
James, You are a wonderful history teacher! You are very knowledgeable! This is my first history class that I actually grasp and understand a bit of history. I believe one thing could be improved, grading. This semester I couldn't seem to understand the reason of an exam being worth the same as video questions. Thank you for passing on your knowledge to others.
i had a great semester and I strongly suggest this class to anyone else.
This course was excellent. The instructor did a wonderful job.
Thanks for being such an awesome teacher!
Mr. James is one of the best history teachers i ever had . He is always willing to help his students. He really makes history interesting i never knew i could enjoy history so much.
Probably my favorite class of the term!
History isn't exciting for me nor is it my strongest subject, but I must say that this professor has made it easier for me to understand the different areas that we covered.
was a good class but grading skills on the test were iffy cuz i felt my answers were right as well
John-Gabriel James is a wonderfully funny teacher, patient and understanding.

Mr. James Good Job. I reccommend your class to all of my friends.
very good
I really liked how you remembered everyone's names and I didn't feel like just a "typical" student taking your course. It's always good to build relationships with every student taking your course that way in life they will always remember which professors they liked and disliked. I will be looking forward to taking your class next semester :)
He is a great teacher. I hope he is around a long time to teach History to future students.
Awesome, awesome, awesome! He is truly an educator in every sense of the word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this class. Gabe was very supportive and understanding of the students. He allowed me to gain knowledge that otherwise would have slipped right over my head.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
I would put a coffee poy in the corner because by 2pm I'm tired.
I would keep the course the way it was taught, I wouldn't change anything.
Nothing. I usually complain that teachers don't put effort in reminding students about major project due dates, but the teacher helpfully reminds us and updates us frequently, which I like in a teacher.
i would have nothing to change. the instructor approach this introductory World History class with understanding of his students and awareness to adapt teaching methods to accommodate the different levels of learning.
Probably provide props or items representing the different time periods/civilizations to support instructor's knowledge of the subject matter. Also, more hands on assignments either including writing on the board or crafts or cultural potluck with knowledge of relevant culture tied to the food item.
I would make it a bit more fun so that I know the students will remember what they have learned and use it in other classes as they go through their journeys.
The work load was fair and appropriate. I would however, review course time line and set firm dates for assignment due dates. Pushing dates out shows your human but also submisive
nothing really
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Mr. James is an excellent teacher.
The school needs more understanding professors, like Mr. James. I liked the class very much and enjoyed the more casual class settings.
He did a good job in teaching us to freely state our own opinions while communicating with the other students to uphold a comfortable atmosphere.
The instructor was extremely effective to connect with every student and lecture the proper amount of curriculum without diverting the syllabus. We were challenged in way to keep to the writing intensive guidelines.
The teaching methods were easy to follow and understand even though the content was a little difficult to process. Would've like more interesting methods other than lecture, videos, essays, and exams.
Mr. James is a wonderful teacher I just feel sometimes he gives slack to some of the students who really have no reason for not turning things in on time.
I found the presentation well thought out.
john is a very nice guy and he is a good fair teacher.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
I now have a better understanding of ancient civilizations.
Oh yeah.
Taking this class had rekindled my interest in world history and I enjoyed learning more in this class that will be kept with me in the long run.
This class gave me the clarity for expansion of my World view and general knowledge. I enjoyed the assignment which challenged me to use the library resources and search with different perspectives of the internet. thank you Mr. james.
Yes. Most of the time one will be introduced to a setting where paperwork and essay writing is the major content of the job duties. It gave a lot of practice in utilizing new knowledge/ subject matter in essays and written work and relating or applying it to your life.
Somewhat. I find what we are learning to be interesting and useful.
My general knowledge has increased so has my desire to learn more about history and culture.
22. Other comments:
Thanks Gabe
I really enjoyed the class very much. The teacher was able to rekindle my great interest in World History and I am glad that I took this course. The teachers teaching methods were quite effective and he was open to many opinions and feedback after lectures.
Although the procedure in learning wasn't as personal or 'inspiring', the course was organized well and wasn't overwhelming even though it was a lot of material covered within the course.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
I would like to think that if I was going to teach a class I would teach it in the manner that Mr. James taught the course. This truly was an exceptionally presented course.

Maybe more captivating videos. The Eugen Weber videos were so boring. And the more he talked the less I understood what he was saying.
more discussions
Nothing, it was a fun class. I liked the lecture style and working in random groups was fun. The groups made it so we could get to know majority of the people in class. It was a fairly balanced workload and I liked that we focused on writing skills, but we still were given opportunities to hear student opinions.
I was very pleased with the overall course and can not really think of anything to change. I even enjoyed the textbook.
I would change nothing, everything is great.
For me, the least effective way for my learning abilities was lectures. I listened to the lectures but I found it hard to remember and comprehend the information. Maybe in the future, he could use Power Point presentations and have them accessible to students online so that they can go back to it and even print out the slides.
Speak more from your knowledge and less from the textbook. Your wealth of information on history is outstanding.
I would go on field trips.
The course is just fine as it is.
Change the text. It's a little confusing
Nothing.

20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
Loved taking HIST 152 from Professor Gabe! I'd wish I had taken his class for HISY 151. Learned a lot from the class and his study methods worked great!!!! Highly recommend this class to anyone needing HIST 152.
I really like Mr. Jame's enthusiasm and true passion for the material that the course is comprised of. This enthusiasm and passion comes through in the lecture portions of the course. I think too often instructors stand before a class and lecture to the students in a stilted and scripted sounding fashion. I think that a lot of instructors lose their audience to boredom and indifference half way through a lecture. Mr. James incorporates, what seemed to me, a vast cache of personal experience and intellectual understanding into all of our lecture and discussion time. I found that this method was extremely effective in keeping me awake and attentive. In addition to all of the individual work we did in class I really liked the group work that he had us doing, especially when reviewing for tests. It was very helpful for me to bounce different ideas off my peers in order to formulate various thoughts I had on a particular question or problem. When test time came around I felt very well prepared and confident in my success. As I said in my previous comment I really liked this course and how well presented it was, and I would not change a thing.
good
Very structured. As planned by the syllabus.
i think that Gabe has really perfected his teaching method.
I think it's good. Gabe is a funny teacher and I can tell he knows his history.
I believe Mr. James is an excellent teacher and I was pleased in the way in which the material was presented throughout the course. I thought the videos were interesting and truly added to the class. As well, I truly appreciated the reviews for the quizzes and midterm throughout the course and found them exceptionally helpful.
The teacher is great with great teaching methods.
He was very well prepared with lectures and assignments. I give him credit for that. But there were times when I wish that he wouldn't read off of the paper. I found myself drifting off at times. It was hard for me to stay focused while he read off of the paper.
very effective i learned a lot from this class
Very fun person.
I really like his teaching style. This is the second time that I took a class from him. He is well- prepared, calm and has good demeanor towards his students.
good!
More videos would have been better. Lectures seemed a little long and dragged out. But overall it was informing and I did learn from them.
I like this instructor's teaching methods very much. He's VERY kind and polite and makes himself approachable and available to anyone in need. His work is duable and he doesn't give you any work that is unnecessary for the class.
good, fair
Excellent. His easy going, gentle manner is very effective in teaching and learning new and often difficult parts of history. The love that he has for what he teaches is very evident in how he instucts his class. Great job Gabe...:) P.S. I also really appreciate his wonderful sense of humor.
I really liked the way James taught a very hard course. He made it fun to learn history and I'm looking forward taking another one of his classes. His method of teaching brought the seriousness of ones of that nature and he also brought out the bright sunny side of things. I know for me he brought out some emotions in me and in my eyes that is the sign of a good teacher. I feel privileged to have been able to learn so much in a way that I will retain my knowledge attained in this class. Thank you.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
Yes. Mr. James and this course have greatly improved my geographical knowledge ten-fold. I love the blank maps. It reminded me of the stories my Dad use to tell me about the way that he first learned geography and the history behind every location. As far as job skills go, I think that his writing and organizational classes that he gave us were invaluable to me through out the course of this semester.
yes
Read Read Read is a must!
i know so much more about history then i did before.
Yes. I really understand much better the history of the world at various times. I like how we went through each period at a time and discussed all the important things going on. It gave a sense of world unity because all peoples have effected each other at some point or another and they all have felt the same way, at times, around the world.
Although I entered the class not really knowing what to expect and with low expectations due to the fact that throughout my school career thus far it has seemed that (for the most part) the same basic history is taught, with certain things ommitted, I am leaving with increased knowledge and the desire to learn certain areas further. I am so grateful to have taken this course as Mr. James assisted in much critical thinking of past eras I had previously not thought that much about.
Yes, definitely learned a tremendous amount in this class, especially about world history.
Definitely.
YES, definitely. In fact, I like so much the way he teaches history that I would like to major in history too.
yes his style works for me
I learned some general knowledge on world history that I didn't know before.
He made my open my eyes to how history affects us all in the past and present and how to relate to that.
yes
Yes. When I first entered the class I had no interest in past history, but with the way that the class was taught and with the knowledge of the teacher, I found myself wanting to know more. In fact I actually really like this class and plan to recommend it to anyone who may need a 152 History credit.
Yes, James has handed me some great tools that I know I will be using the rest of my life.

Great course!
besst teacher
this was a great class and i hope to get another next semester.
The videos were really awesome, too. Professor Waber(?) segments were very illustrative and I like his accent.
Going to class and particpating in the always interesting class discussions were enjoyable throughout the semester and I can honestly say I am a bit sad the semester is coming to a close.
I just want to say Thank you very much Gabe, you are a great professor. Hope you continue to motivate and inspire others as you have inspired me.
i enjoyed this class very much thank you :)
Thanks for everything.
I have truly enjoyed two history classes with Gabe James.

He's a great great teacher and I'm not just saying that. One of the nicest teachers you'll ever come by. Nice and knowledgeable.

I hope that Gabe chooses to continue teaching at this college so that others may have the opportunity to learn in such a warm and pleasant atmosphere.
Returning back to school I had some real reservations. I was so worried but taking this course along with a couple others that made me realize that I did the right thing. The Professors here at HCC and UH really care about us. This is a hard combination to find. The University should feel privileged to have the quality of this Instructor here in Hawaii for us. Thank you.

NOTHING
good already
I would cut back on the writing, ex on the midterm, and final.
I would show videos
The only thing that I would possibly change would be to lable this course as a writing intesive course not just a regular course.
I would make this class less writting intensive.
Nothing. It was instructed very professionally.
I would of used lots of diffrent learning tools. Also more group activities and disscusions.
I would give a couple more comprehension assignments between quizzes and tests. Sometimes in your lectures you speak too fast, so it would be nice to have a couple assignments in between.
more group work
make it less of a writing intensive class
Use a powerpoint to make notetaking easier for students,
He made the course so writing intensive. He needed to explain the context a bit better. I had a little hard time understanding.
I don't remember if this was a lecturing course or not but i found the lectures to be boring and kind of repetitive to the readings...i had a hard time staying focused in class.
Less writing.
More visual aids.
NOthing because i liked how he had thought our class.
the only thing that i would change in this course is that it should have been a writing intensive class
21. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?

he is a very excellent teacher
He had very good teaching methods but if he used my suggestion above the class would be A LOT better.
I really like his methods. I believe he's a really good teacher.
I felt that the teacher was very fair towards his students. He actually listened to what we said, and made changes to the course based on our suggestions. Also, the teacher took alot of time to prepare for tests with the class. This was extrememly helpful.
I felt he could have done more to engage the students..but then again the class wasn't very enthusiastic about the topic anyway..
Great first semester.
He was a good teacher, just not amazing.
it was easy to understand....
i enjoyed this teacher and his teaching methods very much, they helped me to learn and excel in this class greatly

I really like James but I don't like the course. I personally don't care a lot about History and I was hoping to gain some interest from this course. Instead I dislike it even more. I just think that if each week or 2 weeks was dedicated to one specific country and then tested on them individually and done more worksheets and hands on activities I would have learned more and it would have also gotten the class to participate more.
Great job, looking forward to more classes.
He knows his subject well but he didnt connect with the students.

He did a fantastic job on his first semester of teaching at Hawaii Community College. He made sure that students understand the subject matter and was exceptionally helpful. I personally learn better when instructors have that kind of attitude.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
I think he needs to improve the lectures and and sthe assignmenmts. I think his teachibg skills need to be improved.
I would try to go a little slower, but that is also difficult to ask. The subject was massive and Gabe had so much to cover.
Fewer lectures.
I wouldn't make it seem like a lecture course; reading off from a paper makes the audience lose interest. Provide pictures of what your talking about, a lot of the material covered in class was good, but it didn't fully capture the interest of the students. Some learn by visuals, others by other means, mix it up a bit.
I was teaching this course, i would change the test format. I believe the Five "W's" was a bit difficult to go by. I would rather answer direct questions, or have some kind of guideline. I would also lessen the amount of writing a bit. It Is almost like a writing intensive class.
I think for a history course, lecturing is an effective way to teach. I liked just listening to a lecture. I would give more quizzes on the reading.. just so it gets done. I liked the text book. It gave a lot of information and was fairly easy to understand.
i would try to make the class more enjoyable. Not so much lecture, but more hands on or fun activities, maybe even games.
More variety would be nice in terms of how course material is taught... i.e. movie clips, short stories, class discussion/views, compare/contrast between now and then... Sometimes things get confusing at the end of the lecture because there is so much information, so maybe an overall review would help, and less direct reading from text and information put into an easier way to understand.
Not much. it was a pretty good course....perhaps less lecture videos
I would have made more of the lectures using power point.
Overall Gabe did an great job this semester. He was nervous at first, but he did get his feet under him.
The lectures were very close to what the main course book said, maybe instead of lecturing from a script, actually talk about it.
history is a tought subject to really enjoy. i would have made the class more interesting and fun. standing in front of the class and pacing back and forth while reading your lecture notes is something that can make your class just want to stand up and leave (and most of us was close to doing it). sometimes it can be o.k. to teach as if it was a high school level. the ultimate goals to make sure that your students can remember this stuff and if playing some kind of history game is the way to do it then it should be done. compared to the history 151 i took last semester i really did not enjoy this class. most times i wanted to fall asleep.... sorry!
dont know
Honestly Mr.James is very educated in The History of the world. It is clear that Mr.James is passionate about History and loves to teach it. Overall the course material was benifichal as well as challenging. Most of the areas in Mr. James's class material is right were i would expect it to be coming from a first semester teacher. Mr. James was able to fix most of his discrepencies by the end of the semester.
more hands on activities
I wouldn't really improve anything because it seems just right. The work, the quizzes, etc are just right.
I would change how i reach my students thinking, insted of videos and reading off of a paper i would try and do more creative things such as a powerpoint!!make it intersting so students could get more involved in the subject!!
I wouldnt change anything, it was fine in my eyes.
I would maybe get more group work into and get the kids to work together more so they are not antisocial to eachother. I would use more interactive modules to make history more fun in learning. When lecture do not read from the text or even lecture information from the book because we can just read the text book if we wanted too but that it should come from what he knows, and like he should be passing it down to us.
a: The course was an overall good one, however, I preferred it when the instructor didn't read from his notes. There were paragraph length notes that would be read to the class most days and sometimes it was difficult to stay alert. When the instructor would lecture purely without those notes, I found the lessons to be more intriguing or interesting, or even just easier to pay attention to. b: I wouldn't change much about the course, although, maybe an addition of more videos would've been cool. The ones we would watch in class were very thought provoking or interesting and to watch more would've been really fun.
what i would do to improve the course would be the fact that the work load was kind of small i would increase with more group stuff. Maybe also have a out door session and go on a field trip to like another island to learn about what happen there,
If I were to teach this course, I would have made this course more fun and interact with the students more, so they could have a fun time learning instead of sitting and listening to lectures while discussing each chapter we have read in the book. I would have played some educational videos and go around and ask what each person has learned from reading or watching the video. Also, mix up the history a bit or something like that.
I would make some powerpoint presentations. Perhaps simple PP's for the material that was highly important. At the beginning of the semester, the lectures were pretty lengthy. I appreciated it when he shortened the lectures, and instead of reading to us, he started speaking to us about the material. I would keep the lectures at a medium length, but perhaps email the students the notes or powerpoints that were used for their study aids. So in summary: 1. power points for important facts 2. Keep lectures at a medium length, but provide lectures notes and email the power points to the students.
If I were teaching this course, I would improve it by using the required textbooks more.
Less reading more hands om stuff.
Nothing our instructor was well prepared and very passionate about the lessons which made me motivated to do well in the course.
During lecture, since students don't always take notes as fast as the speaker maybe providing visual written information on the board on in a form of a power point will be more helpful for students in getting all the important lecture informations down.
I would improve this course in a way that was a little more specific and straight forward on the subject. Not so broad or else you might get off topic.
I would try to tie in more relevance to what is going on in the world today, and why history matters to us today.
Gabe, the course started off a little rusty, but once we learned how much knowledge you had to share the course began a greater experience.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
HIs methods are hard to understand but he gave us some time to catch up with the work
Overall very good, Gabe cared that his students read the text assigned and really was dissapointed if he felt most did not read for the disscusions. I took that as an inspiration to be prepared, that it was important to him. He is new at teaching and as expected he sometimes was working out the cinks in his class stucture, but I did not fault him for that.
It was ok was a little hard at the beginning, but after we know how things were it got better.
Great methods.
Needs to know the material better; reading off the paper is boring. Use different ways of teaching students.
I think his teaching methods are pretty effective. His lectures are kind of fast, and i think a bit more black board explanations or content would be most helpful.
He knew the material, that was evident. It was rather difficult to pay attention at the beginning of the semester when he was reading from his notes. But it got better. I enjoyed his teaching style. Less movies though.
Mr. james is a great teacher. Way too educated for simple Hawaii life. But that is great. Only if we had more smart people like him.
I think it was a little too boring. The class was mostly all lecture, nothing interesting. Because it was always lecture everyday i never wanted to go to class because i would get bored and not pay attention anyways.
Very good, lots of knowledge which makes me confident in what teacher is teaching.
He explained the material very well and covered all the subjects on the quizes not leaving any questions in our minds
it was effective, for me. But i'm not sure about the other students.
I think that his technique is something that is evolving and will improve over time. In the beginning of the semester he was definately a lecturer. After Gabe received some mid-term feedback, he decided to change it up a bit. This was a rather difficult transition, because before the change we were well prepared for the quizes and tests... after the change I did not feel nearly as prepared.
the lectures needed improving, the video's were educational, and the writing projects were good, it got students to go out and research.
like i stated above, james's teaching methods were very dull. for a young professor i would have thought he would have made learning history interesting. that was the biggest complaint amongst us students is that his teaching methods were dull and most of us had to force ourselves to go to class. i do believe that james knows his stuff, it just the way his tries to teaches it.
it works well
The teching methods of Mr. James was disterbing and or distracting at the same time. Mr. James is the type of teacher who when grading a students work grades bases on what he feels the students potental is. Yes, i'm sure. I did the investagating my self. collecting a mass persentage of the classes papers, i was able to find students who like my self fell victom to a higher standard. Sadly I was all the way at the top of the todempole. I found others who clearly spent no time outside of class working on a midterm paper and was able to get a signefagantly higher grade. Most likely the opinion of one student will not ever cause anyone to give Mr.James a lecture on fair grading tactics. If so it may be wise for me to mention that Mr.James found that he has had a sudden change in how he will grade a students late work. Mr. James changed his 2 grades down on any late work, to no penalty. All this after the majority of us students cramed, stressed, and worried about turning in a huge assighnment on time.
I think it was great but i just learn better with hands on work.
I think that the teachers teaching method is really good and understandable.
very good teaching style, cleatly presented the course materials
I feel that the teacher is great. Throughout the semester he improved alot, Mabey a different way of teaching would be great insted of lecture off of a paper make a powerpoint be more visual...
I think Prof. Gabe's teaching methods are very easy to understand and are easy to learn from. Although his lectures were rather long, he made sure we all understood the main points behind the lecture, which allowed us to learn.
I think Gabe is a very educated man, and a great teacher. He uses the text book to lecture from, and he doesnt need too. He knows his subject matter well, and if you ask him a question he knows the answer, and thats how i think he should be teaching. From his passion of history.
The teacher was always very upbeat and happy, very positive and always smiling, which I appreciated all the time. He tried to make class a good place and he seemed to really care about the students. If there were questions he'd always try to answer and explain as best as he was able to, and if there was something he didn't know he would try to find the answer to present to the student. He was always very cheerful.
I thought the teacher was good he was very clear in terms of explaining the notes that we needed to use on test or to study for in atempt at taking it. He is also fair in many ways he lets re-take test and gives you extra help if you need it.
In the beginning of the spring semester, his teaching methods were not up to par and boring. Instead of lecturing as a regular teacher would, he would depend on reading from the paper that had his own version of the summary of the chapter from the book that we were required to buy. His lectures were boring and it seemed he did not know how to or where to start. However, during the middle of the semester he started to improve on his teaching skills as a teacher and came around. I believe if he had some help or advice from fellow professors this would have not happened. Few students dropped this class because of the way he taught in the beginning, but now that he has slightly improved his teaching methods are more clearer and specific. I wish this would have happened earlier in the semester rather than go through this mess.
At the beginning of the semester, the lectures were pretty lengthy with a lot of critical facts. It was hard to follow along when he used to read to us. When he began shortening the lectures it really helped. He not only shortened the lectures, but he also began speaking to the class instead of reading to us. His lecture guides were very helpful. I found it extremely helpful to go over to vocabulary at the end of class or on another particular day. I appreciated the study days before tests where we could ask him questions. I also appreciated the group work that we got to do for preparation for the big tests. I believe when he decided to change his teaching habits, he became a much more effective teacher. His tests were fair, and the fact that they were open note was great. I don't say that they were great because it made the tests easier on me, I say they were great because the questions were deep andl long questions. He graded fairly on the tests, and his written assignments were fair and manageable for a 100 level class.
For his first year, James did a good job with explaining the topics and chapters well. I liked that he went over the important ideas and terms after every class period.
okay.
I think this instructures method of teaching was very effective. All of his lectures were thorough and provided more that enough information for students to understand the concepts of the lecture. Also, the usage of video lessons and questionair with the videos made lesson in some class day very effective and aided me in understand the subject being discussed in the book. Basically, this instructor's teaching methods were great! There was no room for slacking and only room for focusing on the work.
The instructor was always prepared, clearly defined the objectives for the class session, clearly stated assignments, was always punctual to class. He exhibited a high level of professionalism and was always available to assist students at all times. He clearly stated the material in the text in an easy to understand and concise manner. He always displayed respect for each and every student and his pleasantness was always very calming and effective especially when having tests or papers to write.
I think his teaching methods were some of the best but it was kind of hard to follow when he relied mainly on just one method for a class period. I loved it though when he would put on some videos. I'm more of a visual learner.
In the beginning of the semester, Gabe based most of his lectures around a pretyped summary of the topics being discussed which he then read aloud to the class. This was difficult to follow and did not provide emphasis on topics. after midterm, he allowed us to give him feedback through an anonymous survey about his teaching style. I was pleased with this because it gave me an opportunity to express my views on his teaching strategies and work load. I was even more pleased when he incorporated many of the class suggestions into the rest of semester. more instructures should do this.
Gabe seems to be very approachable and willing to spend time to make sure that you understand it.
You have a few kinks to work out, but your obviously brilliant.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
Yes very much. I am way more knowledgeable that than prior to this class. I never knew anything about the WW1 or 2, cold war, to name a few some of what we learned about history.
Yes, I've learned a lot in this class and there were some new history information that I did not learn from my last history class I took.
yes.
a little, most of the information I already knew.
Yes, his feedback on essays really show what i have to improve on. He Has also taught me the value of careful research.
Yes. The instructor has a lot of knowledge about history. I learned a lot more taking this history class than my history 151 class.
Yes, I learned a lot.
Hate History, but learned alot from this course.
Not really contributed to job skills, i learned about history so i guess my general knowledge gained something a little.
Yes, at first I didn't understand why I needed to know these things if History wasn't going to be my expertise but I now understand the importance of it and how it applies to everyday problems/solutions, not only here but around the world.
Alot of the material i knew already but it was explained in more detail in this class.
yes he has.
Absolutely
knowledge, some. much of what was tought seemed like highschool curriculum.
this is a tough one. because in the end i can't say if i will remember majority of what we covered. the required text was already boring, in the end i'm going to have to honestly say no.
yes
sure, sorry i am holing up the class i must shorten my responces.
yes
Yes
Yes, he showed how important attendence is and how to work hard at what you are doing...
I've learned a handful of general knowledge skills from this course. From learning about different areas in Europe, I also learned the geography of many parts of the world which has imporved my knowledge of the world.
He has taught he alot about history, and yes it has helped with my job learning skills.
yes
Yes, I think so. I've absorbed a lot of historical information that I hadn't really known about before and I enjoyed learning what i did and am pretty sure I'll be able to apply my knowledge to my life and future plans.
I just used the knowledge that i learned form high school to be put to go use in this class.

Yes, he has helped me with my studying skills and general knowledge of history. I especially learned geography, and certain terms for particular ages in history. I was most fascinated by World War I and II studies, and stuff that was more recent in history. Although i was also fascinated by the age of discovery. It made me appreciated life in today's society, because life was very trying back then. Gabe has instilled a greater appreciation in history and life in the earlier ages.
Yes!
yes
Yes. One of the most important skill I learned in this class is how to write a paper formatted in a History research paper. I already knew how to write an essay but i didn't really know the format on writing a history research paper. The instructor really exposed the students to this type of writing.
the instructor has helped me to gain much clearer understanding of the world's history post 1500 bc.
Yes, he has by extending my general knowledge of history and I believed that it has contributed me in ways that I will take with me and apply at my workplace.
History is very intersting. yeas, I do believe that this class had enlightened me on historical topics.
Job skills? , whatever... General knowledge, yes.
Very much.
22. Other comments:
I think that Gabe was very driven to hold all the students to the paper due dates and such and I was happy for this. However some where after the first survey he asked us to take about his class, he changed his strictness about missing class or due dates. I was always ontime to class and all my papers went in ontime. When he said that he would start taking late papers and not take off points I felt that it was not fair, late papers should at least have points taken off to compensate for tardyness and others who turned things in on time. I think it is okay to take a late paper for a documented reason, but points should be taken off regardless of reason or documentation. This is my only complaint other than this I loved his class and his style and dedication to history and the students.
John is really knowledgeable about his subject, and i admire his passion for his work in teaching all he knows, in and understanding way to he students.
Good job. Thanks for being understanding of the students, that we have lives apart from school.
mr. james is a great teacher. It is hard to do what teachers do and he did great. Mr. james should loosen up. Maybe go to a roller coaster park.
As of this point i wouldnt tell people to take this class only because i feel that the teacher needs a couple more years to experience and learn better teaching methods. Its not a hard class, but its boring.
I really enjoyed the teacher poise and good attitude throughout the class.
He is a very good teacher who is always prepared.
i enjoyed this course and would recommend this teacher to other students
Great Job Cnat wait to take another class from him!!he will get better with time!!
Very nice teacher, very positive and full of knowledge. I liked this history class compared to some that I've had in my past.

The first part of the semester was pretty rough, but that is understandable because Gabe was new to teaching a class in this particular enviornment. His survey that he gave out in mid-semester to analyze his teaching methods was extremely helpful and it highly benefited both him, and his class. His work load was fair throughout the semester, and when he decided to reanalyze the requirements for a 100 level class, it made a significant difference. I appreciated the time he took in class to help us with the material. Alot of teachers don't do that now days. Some teacher's thought process today is "You either get it or you don't." Gabe took the time in class to help us with terms, studying, and outlining things for our tests and papers. I very much appreciated his methods after the mid-semester. He has improved significantly.
You were a very good teacher. I appreciate your patience and hard work during your first semester!
none
This class was fun. History is not really my strong subject but after taking this class i feel that i am now more informed. Also, this class really promoted critical thinking especially in the essay mid-term and the essay assignments which made this class more effective and worth taking.
Mr. Gabriel is an excellent teacher. He is very patience and understanding on how certain life situations can postpone our work for his class and he'll give us time and a chance to complete them.
I apreciated you and the class.

19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
i would let students do essay at home instead of in class writing essay because we could bring the essay themself for in class essay.
nothing. he knows his stuf
Make things more fair like attendance and how exams are done. Some people didn't come the day of the exam and still got to take it home to do it. Let students know ahead of time when the teacher is sick.
well first of all for a non WI class i think that the exams should be multiple choice or true or false, and maybe more class activities and group work especially for the evening classes.
It would be easier to take it in if we have two classes a week instead of 2hours 45 minutes long class. One day Hawaiian History and the other day would be World history. It is hard when we have to do both on the same day.
I would institute more variations of in-class activities and class involvement on discussing in-class videos.
I would teach more than just reading and let student to just listen.
make some poi...
Focus more on Hawai'i and less on the rest of the world.
I really liked having a weekly schedule lined up. Having a good amount of smaller easier assignments really helped me out in some of my other classes.
If I teach this course, I would go fieldtrips.
possibly having group participation more with in-class debates...having topic focus not about the past until annexation but have student realize what does this have to do with me?
I would have made less writing assignments.
Less writing intensive. More group activities.
I would try to connect with the students a little more by presenting personal knowledge/ perspective on what he knows in accordance to the course. Connecting to the students in a mutual way is ideal for effective communication of course material. In other words, I would intergrate personal learning, experiences and knowledge to make sure the text is understood. i would not read from my lecture notes but speak to my students directly, with eye contact and ENTHUSIASM. I would not give out to much readings.I would make history fun with interactive activities that help us understand what really went on in the pacific around 1500- now. Like a skit or something...
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
he was using the movie kind which helped us a lot to understand. but his lectures were oral ones and sometimes he only read the articles without writing on the board, if so he should have gave us the article... it was not cool.
he realy knows his stuf. i enjoyed his teaching methods.
I think Mr. James is a great teacher and his methods of teaching are ok.
very good for his 1st semester teaching
He was fair, patient, and open to ideas.
I like to use his hundout that he prepare but sometime its too much reading
gabriels fckn rocks..
Very relaxed, confidant, friendly, and just a great person to listen to for 2+ hours!
It was interesting how we had so much writing assignments. It helps me critically think about what we are supposed to learn. He got me to really look at history in a different light. He is a really patient teacher and very knowledgable. He did really well to reach all of us because we are all at different stages of education. I didn't like the syllabus because of the format. Other then that I thought he was a awesome teacher.
His teaching method is well-organized and interesting.
The teacher was very nice, but stayed very textbook. He didn't take much time to interact with the class.
Some of his methods are really helpful like the writing workshops were very helpful in getting ideas for assignments and essays. It was crucial for midterms and final exams.
I believe Mr.James needs more time to get comfortable teaching here in Hawaii. He seems a little hesitant to speak of what he personally has learned and relies on the text and other readings to teach. But for some this doesnt work. We learn better when someone is enthusiastic and eager to pound into us the knowledge that we are expected to know. Make us scared a little. He needs to somehow make more connection in what we read by explaining more in class and not reading explanations/data straight from the paper. I think it is okay to have a mutual perspective in the case of pacific history as not to be biased in words, but sometimes we need to hear the ugly to really begin to empathize. To create empathy amongst students is essential for our learning if the instructor wants us to get the most out of his course.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
there were a lot of writing and they were hard but helped our knowledge.
defidently. my teacher made me very knolegeable about this subject. he is a greate teacher. you guys should give him a more mony for being a bomb okole teacher.
Yes, i was able to learn interesting facts about history and also improve my writing skills.
yes
Yes
I think so
fck yea.
Yes, I knew virtually nothing about HistHI partII, and had minimal interest in it (in comparison to ancient Hawai'i history), but was surprised how interested I became once the course started.
He has helped me take a look at where I came from and my past. Our past and where everyone came from now seems more important then before. The way he presented the content of the class information was easy to understand for me and I learned a lot.
He gave students many skills about writing, and it is very valuable for students' future careers.
Yes, I learned some stuff about history, but not as much as I had expected to.
Yes. I learned to not only write a good essay but a critical thinking essay that I can be proud of.
Somewhat. I learned alot on my own research and not to much guidance from the instructor, just alot of readings. when a student notices that what we are reading wont be on a test, we stop reading what is given and start scanning the instructor to identify what may be on the test and go from there. I learned a lot about our kingdom despite the lack of info given by instructor. But still I wish his teachings were more relevant to our understanding. I still have a hard time to connect to him. The video with keanu Sai was most valuable, a person who has actually experienced the violation of the western culture and can hold a persective of the experience of our Kingdom and present the info to the listners with balance. I'm sure James has experienced his share of the dominance of western cultures but lacks to present this info, left with no rapport with students.
22. Other comments:
he did mid term evaluation for the lecture. after that, i think his lecture improved. he tries to improve his lecture a lot!
give him the money.
I hope I pass this class!!
bringin the heat/..
I wish there was a book covering solely the history of Hawai'i. The textbook only had a little to say on the matter and the course relied mainly on reserve readings and photocopies. Professor, you should write the first textbook integrating Hawai'i fully into the history of the era covered by this course.
This course had a lot of writings, and they were very challenging, but I'm sure that they helped my writings skill a lot.
The teacher was very nice but needs to work on fixing up the course.
Great class. I would recommend this course to everybody
What he gave us on tests were not taught to us clearly in class so I have contributed to my own learning. He would give assigned readings but would not reiterate to much on what we should have learned from the readings in the following class let alone make us aware of how the text relates to what we will have on the tests/ essays. Mr. James is very nice.
