I think cost-effective analysis should be taught with more hands on assignments in order to really solidify the content material.
Great course. I was hesitant about it being through elluminate, but Deb was very knowledgeable and presented the subject matter in a very clear, understandable way. She also made good use of examples and practice problems to help us better learn the material.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
all. Very good at teqaching a difficult topic in stand way
Deb is extremely knowledgeable and offers great insight! We had PH professionals taking the class that are not PH students, who have a great deal of experience and brought perspective that was not only refreshing but valuable. The class had a great balance of lecture, activities, and discussion. I cannot say enough positive things about this class! The homework and activities really were well thought out and very realistic. They enabled us to think critically and apply what we were learning, every step of the way! Thank you for integrating technology in a meaningful way. I appreciate you taking the time to post the slides and recordings; they offered a great resource for refreshers, clarifications, and studying tools for the exams. The exams were fair - they integrated content and application.
I found the reading materials and homework very useful for a better understanding of course content.
I found the working groups helpful in clarifying the lecture information.
I enjoyed the group exercises and felt the reading assignments were very helpful.

NONE!
I have found Deb's classes to be very informative, professional, and valuable. I do not think I would change anything.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class and feel as if I am better prepared to contribute knowledge to a project as a public health professional. The topic and content of homework and assignments were useful. All of the materials provided us with information that we can use in the field. In comparison to other classes I took in the university I felt this course was the most relevant and realistic use in an actual work environment.

mahalo!
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Not only was it interesting and engaging, but it challenged me to think critically and apply what I was learning! THANK YOU!! This is by far the best class that I have taken.
I really enjoyed the course! I also thought Claire was very helpful and provided good insight. She did a great job!.
Professor Juarez is one of the best professors I have ever had the honor of learning from. Not only is she knowledgeable about the material and well prepared for class but she is also able to communicate effectively the lessons and materials. Her course better prepares me to serve our society as a public health professional by increasing my ability to think critically about program evaluation and apply learned concepts to projects and programs in the public health field.
Excellent learning experience.
Too many lectures by the TA.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Gaining general concepts of Health Economics and how these concepts are applied in creating health care policy and decisions. I enjoyed reviewing "classic" economics articles, as well as reading more updated and mainstream articles on trends in health care economics. I was exposed to websites that have expanded my knowledge, and will be a great future resource.
I really appreciated how Deb was able to convey the subject matter on a level that we were able to understand (since we are not all economists), but at the same time gave us insight into the topic and related the concepts to practical policy issues.
The discussion oriented class was instrumental in my learning different aspects of current clinical as well as policy issues relating to financial, economic, and social barriers. Hearing the opinions of my classmates, many of whom have practical experience in the health field was an edifying experience.
I found the supplemental journal articles helpful in gaining a better understanding of the theories explored in the textbook. I also enjoyed the website commentary assignments.
Webpages! All to often finding the resources needed to accomplish a task is the most challenging. You can acoomplish most anything if you have the right resources and knowledgebase.

I appreciated the recurring overview of basic economic principles in order to have a better starting point in understanding health care economics.
Deb explained concepts clearly, had us work through graphs and problems in class, and includes fun activities.
While the website assignments were an interesting component, sometimes they contained so much information that it was difficult to focus in on something. Perhaps a more focused assignment especially when looking at comprehensive websites would be a good idea.
Sometimes tended to read from powerpoint slides.
I would have appreciated more constructive criticism and feedback regarding my performance in the class. I am always looking for ways to improve...

Enjoyed the learning experience...good classroom participation from all students.
website review every week was a good idea.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I think the article readings were interesting. Deb's lectures really helped with the understanding of topics that were explained in the book. Although not all of us have enough knowledge to do complete cost effectiveness analysis (using specialized software), we have a grasp enough to calculate ICERs on our own and understand published data etc.
The actual use of the TreeAge Software was important. I gained familiarity with the processes of medical decision-making.
learning about decision trees, and determining costs
The assignments were very helpful in allowing students to apply the theories and concepts discussed in class.
A general understanding of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis and the extreme importance the field will have towards future health care policies in the United States. I can also better comprehend and analyze cost-effectivness analysis research, which will help me to become a more disciminating health care professional.
I liked working through problems.
the individual presentations
The exercise with the article review was helpful in gaining exposure and understanding of existing literature. The in-class examples of folding back the trees and sensitivity analysis was also beneficial. Overall, the course was very practical and realistic, which I found very valuable.

Without Deb's expertise and ability to guide us through problem sets I don't think we would have been able to grasp the concepts. She is able to give us an understanding of the concepts and then guide us through the actual calculations so that they make sense in the practical realm of published data.
less detailed slides- place only info important and expand in own words
To better read detailed numbers on the on-line whiteboard, perhaps find another way to write during the class exercises; like typing directly from the keyboard vs. using the free-hand pen. Or, if the option for typing is unavailable, have a follow-up slide prepared for after the exercise with numbers and answers already typed in (though those reviewing the slides in advance will have the answers). Since the class is participating in exercises (i.e. rolling back a decision-tree), there are stops and starts as we figure out the next step. It may be helpful for a re-cap or review at the end of the exercise so the class can grasp each step from beginning to end in one sweep. In comparison to my other on-line class experience, the technology and communication was far less troublesome and frustrating. I think it was because we used the technology appropriately for the learning lesson (not asking for smiley faces and clappy hands just to make sure we're still there :) Dr. Juarez was also level-headed and didn't seem to get frustrated at the student or technology when it did fail, which helped the class move along more smoothly and kept us focused on the subject vs. the technology.
More problems. I would like a second course on Monte Carlo simulation. I would like a course on using TreeAge software.
This is such a great topic. I am not sure if online is the best way to teach it though.
Perhaps a little more time spent on examples of a sensitivity analysis. I felt there was an adequate amount of time allotted to trees and folding back, but the sensitivity analysis calculations were multi-step and a little more complex, however, by the time we got to the topic, we were nearly completed with the course. A little more time would have been nice for that topic, but otherwise, exercises and readings were very helpful.

Highly recommended public health course
I was challenged by this class, and because of it, felt I gained so much by working through the class assignments and exercises. Dr. Juarez was very helpful and gave the class extra exercises and practice tests to help ensure we learned the lessons. The exra help and review was what I needed in order to succeed, and I appreciate that Dr. Juarez made the help easily accessible.
This is THE BEST COURSE I have taken at the University of Hawaii!!!! This course should be incorportated into the courses for med students. The University of Hawaii is VERY LUCKY to have Dr. Juarez, please treat her well so she will stay. More should be done to make this course publically known to individuals in the medical field. The Illuminate / Laulima course format is AWESOME for working professionals who want to learn.
Get rid of the book! What a waste of money. With Deb's understanding of the material and supplemental readings there really is no need for a book.
I would only change one thing about this course and that would be the final exam consisting of 30% of one's grade. It just seems like a lot to put off to last. I would prefer another assignment for 10 % to make the final 20%. I guess I am intimidated a little of having one's grade depend so much on one thing at the end of the semester. It was an excellent course besides and this is one smart cookie professor!!!
It is easy for classes to get lost in theory, this class addressed this issue well. It was wonderful to have a practical and realistic approach to a concept such as this. Great course!
