How to live healthier than just eating vegetables and working out.
a lot great information that will help me to make better choices when it comes to food, and even daily habits.
Learning about nutrients and food and how to correctly read a nutrition label.
I think assignment 2 benefited me personally because I eat vegetarian, so I got to see how much protein I need daily and if I was meeting my needs.
I learned the importance of the nutrition in foods that our body needs to stay alive.
Learned about how my body works and basic nutrition of foods to improve my diet. I am now more aware of what is entering my body.
I learned more about healthy eating. I now know how to read a food label better. I also know different functions of vitamins, minerals, carbs, etc. and how they affect my body.

The different diet principles learned in this class have taught me how to better manage the food I take in. Also i learned more science about food than I expected.
After taking this class for even two weeks, I was able to use new information to help structure my eating habits. I calculated my amount of nutrients I eat per day, and it really helped with how I'm eating now. I notice a huge change in my workouts, and I'm starting to see better results. I can also help my friends decide what is good for them to eat now that I know a pretty good idea of what nutrients are in which foods.
I learned simple ways to change my diet to improve my health.
Everything. It was a great class. Dr. Stewart really inspires you to learn the material by making it fun and interesting with class demonstrations, videos, and interactive exercises in class.
Learning about the different nutrients in the food I eat daily was incredibly interesting and I was able to apply this information with every meal that I ate. Learning about Sports Nutrition was especially applicable to when I exercise or hike. I also benefitted from learning about the digestive system and how human's body reacts to food.
I gained more knowledge and understanding of human nutrition that will help and guide me to live healthier and have more awareness of what foods are beneficial and harmful to my body.
I learned I'm a severely iron deficient athlete! And I learned what to eat to absorb more iron daily!

I learned about the different food groups and how much a pregnant women should weigh during her different stages. I also learned that you shouldn't force children to eat all of their food and only expose different foods and see if they like it or not. If they don't, then you should introduce the same food to the child another time.

I learned a lot of information from this course that will benefit me personally. I learned about the nutrient recommendation. After taking this course, i know understand the importance of human nutrition and how it affects us. As being overweight, this course helped me to eat more healthier and to exercise more.
I benefited knowledge about certain foods and vitamins. I was able to apply the things I learned because my father is vegetarian and I was able to tell him what kinds of vitamins he is missing out on. This class really helped me learn about being healthy.

Things that can help benefit me in my everyday life such as nutrition and exercise.
This course covered a wide variety of aspects concerning nutrition. I've been lifting weights, and until this course, I ate frozen pizzas and candy everyday, and was wondering why I was not making progress strength or body composition-wise. I learned how big of a role nutrition is to weightlifting, especially calories in/calories out, TDEE, and most importantly,the macronutrient content of food. After changing up my diet to a 55 carb/25 protein/20 fat macronutrient split, I was able to see more progress in both strength and my body in 1 month than in the past 4-5 months. This course has reinforced my dream of becoming a RD because it confirmed that I am interested in nutrition and that it is something I am willing to work hard for because I believe that if I can help others struggling with their health and body, it will be all worth it.

I learned plenty amazing things I never even knew before Ive always been health conscious but the little things that we got out of this class are great like for example I would always eat my salad with no dressing, I had no ideas that vitamin K was better absorbed with an oil being that its a fat soluble vitamin, now I'll make sure and have a little olive oil and balsamic on the side. The thing is I just never liked the creamy ranch and all those other dressings I would pick something more natural even lemon and olive oil are a good combo. Well I went a little off topic but little things like these will definitely benefit me and I am excited to put all this into use.

Pretty much the only class I was looking forward to this semester was my nutrition class, yes the material interests me but it makes a big difference when the professor knows how to lecture has an upbeat tempo, cool examples, great storiesâ?¦ I loved coming to every single one of your classes and not to be rude or anything but today we had a grad student lecturing for sports nutrition, I LOVE that stuff but I almost fell asleep, even once when the TA lectured same ideaâ?¦ Hands down best professor, i'd recommend taking your class to anyone. I feel that in really paying attention in your class made me really do good o my exams it was easy to study because you explain things so well in class i wish there was more professors like you out there seriously ur great!

Dr. Stewart sometimes goes through the slides a little too quickly.
I think there can be a more organized way to pass back exams instead of placing each bunch on the floor.
When students do email with questions, taking the time to give an elaborated response would be helpful and makes the students feel as if the teacher truly does care and want us to succeed. Most students I know won't email asking for help if they can figure it out by reading instructions/textbook/notes.
How the textbook is distructive to study. I would prefer the hard cover style textbook.
I think an important part of our spiritual well-being should be taken into deep consideration outside of the science; however, I know that they usually do not go well together is Western studies. For spirituality and our personal relationship with our own bodies are unseen and not studied; therefore, we cannot tap into the spiritual healing effects on our overall health and nutrition. The standards are set by data and politics for most parts in my opinion and Maria has a total grasp and understanding of the contents of this course.
The way this course was laid out and presented was better than u could have personally designed. I loved it and thought it was flexible and yet on point.
I wouldn't change a thing. She does a great job of teaching and giving out resources that you can benefit from.
Sometimes the pace is a little rushed, but generally if someone mentions it, she'll slow down so it's not a big problem.

I don't think there needs to be any improvements because her teaching style and methods were excellent.
NONE! I loved this course, and I had a great time coming to lectures. Honestly, if students went to class and listened to professor Stewart, there would be no issue on the exams. She stresses the key points and informs on which areas to study more than others.

Stewart is amazing professor. I think I did not like is the videos. I always fall asleep in them, not my thing or I found interesting.

She could go a little slower when discussing difficult concepts, sometimes nutrition terms get confusing and sound the same. This would make it easier to take notes.
Do practice tests in class.
There is nothing to improve. The way class is run and the way that Dr. Stewart teaches is the way a course should really be taught, no matter what subject or course it is.
I don't have any suggestions for improving the course or on Dr. Maria Stewart's teaching style and methods. I liked her teaching style and methods and that we had extra credit and points back opportunities. I enjoyed her powerpoints along with videos to enhance our understanding of the material being covered. The assignments along with quizzes helped us to make sure we further understood the material. She gave us a lot of study materials for help us prepare for her tests.

PLEASE MOVE THE QUIZ DAY! Honestly the hardest part of the class was to remember the quizzes on Sunday. It would be much easier and helpful if they were moved to perhaps tues or thursday when the class is taught so its still on student's minds.

I understand there is a lot of content to cover, but maybe slowing down on certain areas, such as the vitamins and minerals, would help a lot more. There was a lot of vitamins and minerals to know and understand so maybe a few more examples would have been beneficial.

I like the simple, clean cut layout and how we followed pretty well with the timing in the syllabus.
The beginning because it wasn't so complex, but she did a great job of explaining it.

The exams and assignments are very straight forward. Lectures are engaging and interesting. Many opportunities to raise course grade.
I liked how we had many components to our grade. I also liked how she would let us make corrections to our exams and the concept of how she allows us to make points back made total sense and I ended up learning more from that.
All aspects of the course are the best because each one related to another. For example, after learning about the essential nutrients, we would learn about the negative effects that it would have on our bodies if we consume less or more than the RDA.
I liked the online quizzes because I felt that they helped me prepare for the exam really well. I also liked how the lecture slides were on Laulima, because even though I take notes every time I go to class, for the days that I miss, having access to the lecture slides is so helpful (and they're also a good resource to use for studying).
Dr. Stewarts relevant videos and exercises, especially the Nutrition Assessment were my favorite and most helpful aspects of the course.
I liked the in class activities best, I felt like it demonstrated the concepts very well and was interesting to go to class. I liked that we were able to make up points that we missed on the test and the online quizzes were a good way to receive points.
The weekly quizzes online, extra credit opportunities, PowerPoint lecture slides for good visual learning, study guides for exams, and assignments all helped towards learning and studying for the course!

Professor Stewart is able to teach a large amount of information at a perfect speed. She is fast enough that she can cover approx. 45 slides in just 2 classes, but explains everything in-depth which allows students time to catch-up and write down notes and her explanations.

sometimes I would forget to take my quizes on laulima on sundays. But that's my fault.
The thing I least liked in the course was some of the pictures in the presentations.

How everything was online, so you had to remember to do everything yourself, and no make ups were allowed

I was intimidated coming into this, but taking this course from Dr. Maria Stewart, helped me overcome it. I really enjoyed this class and I am glad that i took this course from Dr. Stewart, as I learned a lot.

I studied very hard for the exams and I thought I knew the material well but I did not make as good a great as I was expecting to. There were trick questions on the exams that messed me up.
Some of the exam questions were really hard for me to answer even if I studied for the exam a lot and looked back at the questions with notes and lecture slides. The way they were worded confused me.
The cumulative final
Twice I turned in corrections to my exam, but never knew why I did not receive any additional credit for my effort. I submitted odd number of correct questions so my grade should of at least fluctuated by half a point. Also, its obvious the TA's make the test, which is ok, but the grammar on some questions made the test difficult to understand or left the question's answer ambiguous between two possible answers.

I have learned about what nutrients by body needs and what kinds of foods I should try to avoid or rarely eat. I am trying to get in the best shape of my life and being able to eat properly is a huge step for that, so this course has shown me what I can eat in order to reach that goal.

I already had a degree in biology when I decided to take this course. In just one month it is the most useful class I have ever taken. The information is something that I can apply to life eating choices every day to live a healthier lifestyle.
Making a good decisions on choosing food every time I plan to eat out or plan to cook at home. So I would consider to include protein, fruit/vegetables, grains and diary in a meal and balance out through the day.
What I got from this course that will benefit me personally is being more aware of the foods that I consume. I now know what makes an ideal diet and can alter my own diet to meet certain nutrition requirements.

The class was very organized and manageable. I found the powerpoints, as well as the lectures, very helpful in learning the course material. Dr. Stewart kept us updated through email and the class was easy to follow. I never felt unable to ask her or one of the TAs for help.
Professor Stewart stays active with the online class, reminding us about deadlines and giving us feedback as quick as possible.

Maybe have a day a week that students get log into the chatroom and discuss with other students and Professor Stewart in order to clear up anything that they did not understand from the unit due that week.
Sometimes the modules were not able to be uploaded or viewed. Maybe there could be alternative ways to see the material. Also, there were issues with laulima allowing the students to view the answers to quizzes. The exam dates =should not fall on the same dates as the quizzes so that the student can review material not grasped to prepare for the exams.
More recorded lectures.
I love that the online course is designed so that you can go at your own pace. The recorded lectures make me feel like I am in class.
I would say, include more interactive activities that coincide with the terms and lessons. I like to learn through activiites rather than just take quizzes.

Everything was helpful and the power points were straightforward. The quizzes and tests pertained to the lecture material.
Use "announcements" more than emails.
There were some issues with quiz and exam answers so there should be an opportunity to make those points back if there is a good enough reason to why you chose an answer.
Maybe more lecture videos. This was a very tricky class especially since it was not person to person. Also to update the page numbers, it was very confusing.

I like the teaching styles and methods, but it would have been nice if there was homework to keep us busy with the course.
I loved how this class was taught. The powerpoints really covered all the material we needed to know. It challenged you to look up extra material to gain further understanding. The extra readings were very beneficial too. The only thing is that I know this was a summer course and it is fast paced. But I didn't like how some modules were more difficult to grasp than others and they were due at the same time. The exams were due the same time as the quizzes.

I felt as though there was a lot of information and nowhere to really discuss our questions or concerns with peers or the professor other than through email, which can take a few days.
I didn't like trying to record what I ate but the knowledge I gained from it was huge.
A lot of quizzes and confusing part on readings when it's not matching to their edition. So some readings did not cover on some questions from quizzes.
The timed quizzes stressed me out.
The pace, but it couldn't be helped because it was a summer course. Also, I felt like some of the quiz questions sprawled from the available material.
Everything pretty much went well but the quizzes were semi-tricky.
Taking quizzes and exams on Laulima was trying at times due to connectivity issues and Laulima downtime.
I disliked learning about the mechanical processes of digestion and absorption.

The due dates. Some questions were difficult to answer because I did not read about it. For instance asking about fast food. It did not refer back to the readings.

Perhaps in the future, a better system could be in place for referring to portions of the textbook to read? Many times page numbers were given as the assigned reading. I had an online version of the textbook and couldn't find page numbers, so I had to search through the chapters for the correct sections. Just one thought :)
I'm very glad I took this class and have learned a lot about nutrition.
I am surprised how much I've learned/accomplished within 6 weeks. This was an informative online course.

I gained a lot of knowledge about nutrition through the life cycle. EVERYTHING that I learned will benefit me because all the material applies to my everyday life. Not only what I learned will benefit me, but it will benefit others around me. I can help family with varying ages with their nutrition and also help friends.
Aside from learning a great deal about nutrition for all ages, I think I increased my writing skills. I have become more efficient at expressing my thoughts and ideas in words. The discussion posts and assignments were very helpful.
I now know what kind of diet I should be eating when I do decide to have children later in life.

i thought there could have been more quizzes to be prepared for exams, but as long as you really read the book, you will do well on the exams.
Honestly, the course is great. The format was great. I had no problems with the course. The course modules always worked, that's a big plus. Also, because this was a summer session, the work was manageable, it wasn't over whelming. Her methods of power points worked great and her method of the synchronous sessions was very helpful.
I think that more online virtual classroom sessions should be incorporated. I found it helpful for the instructor to emphasize and go over key points, especially since there is so much information presented in shortened amount of time.
The articles that we were required to read were really difficult to understand.

I learned a good deal about how I should eat and the things that I should eat. I learned about what things are and are not regulated well in our country and about several different health problems that could be easily avoided by practicing proper nutrition. I believe that our professor is an extremely well-educated and great professor and I am very glad that despite my hesitations of taking this class that I decided to do so. I learned a great deal.

The most important thing that I got about this class is that most foods are required to gain all of the nutrients needed for a balanced diet. In addition, Iâ??ve learned how to be able to read a food label, so that I can accurately compare different foods nutritional numbers. Furthermore, Iâ??ve been able to learn how to calculate the amount of kcal I need a day based on my individual lifestyle. I will definitely use that information to help moderate my eating habits and what I eat through the day.

I have taken a nutrition course a few years ago but it was not nearly taught as clear and concise as Dr. Stewart taught it. I picked up a lot of valuable things from this course especially about eating habits and making sure my meals are more nutrient dense.

Maria Steward was very enthusiastic each class. She kept the class entertained the entire hour and 15 minutes. Everything she went over was presented in an understandable and interesting way. It seemed like she was commited to getting the class to learn the material and do well in the class overall.
I was hesitant to withdraw from the course, but after talking to professor Stewart, I chose to stay with it, ultimately b/c she seemed to genenuinly care about helping me get my grade up.
She's so passionate about what she's teaching and that makes me and other students passionate about learning. Not a lot of teachers can do that. I also love how she can be fun and focused at the same time

This course was not only very informational, but it was taught in a very efficient manner. You could tell she was very knowledgeable about the topic and was very comfortable teaching in front of a large audience. She gives us extra credit to help those that may be struggling, she is specific in her study guides about what material we should study for tests. And even though I disliked taking those weekly tests, she was kind enough to always remind us when there was an upcoming weekly test due. Even during spring break.

She does answer questions after class that much. But student could get help more from the TA more than the professor herself. If a student ever have trouble with internet connection during the weekly quiz, TOO BAD there is NO EXCEPTION for her. I understand some students have unrealistic excuses. But it sucks to have something that you have no control over (for instance losing internet connection during quiz) and she doesn't consider student's conditions.

Her teaching style incluldes waving through powerpoints at such a fast pace you can't get what she's saying. Also, every sunday, she gives a 15 minute online quiz on information WE HAVENT GONE OVER YET! Then tells you in the next class the information and tells you why you got the questions wrong. This completely goes against common sense. She is terrible with technology, she writes notes on the laptop using a paintbrush-like tool and it's ALWAYS undistinguishable. It looks like arabic or something. Use TEXT or something legible. I've come up several times after class asking questions. One was if she accepts late work, since she failed to mention it on the syllabus. She simply laughed at me like a rich man laughing at the helpless homeless, then said "no" with an evil look in her eye. Shes mad that everyone (or maybe anyone) isn't a NUTRITION MAJOR! Its a class of 200+ taking it for an elective and she just hates that people arent enthusiastic about nutrition. Another time, I asked her after class, simply, what food group mayonnaise fell under. I told her I was confused if it had enough oil in it to make it an oil, and she dodged the question by telling me there are sources on the internet to answer my question.

Dr Stewart - an expert and a scientist. A professional. She makes learning fun and teaches the material at an appropriate level of complexity. She explains complex things to us when asked. Classes are very well put together and impeccably organized (e.g. lectures posted to laulima labeled by date). You have NO IDEA how amazing and helpful and how much time this level of organization saves everyone in the class. Other classes are confusing or dont post the lecture before class or name it something weird so you don't know which one matches what it says on the syllabus. None of that here. Very organized. Grading is very fair with mini quizzes and easay homework online which you just have to remember to finish and it can help your grade since the tests are hard. Overall very fair tests and questions and a lot of chances to study etc. A very good class.

best explainer ever. captured my attention and learned alot. explained digestion better than my anatomy teacher. professor taught class where it was fun to learn, it wasnt stressful. in my anatomy class, its stressful and too difficult, to the point students give up. and the teacher is not a very good teacher/lecturer/explainer. basically, i wish professor could be the teacher of all my classes. It is really true that the professor makes all the difference in the atmosphere of the class, the students' perspective on studying/material, and our experience.

I don't think there are any improvement needed. Some of the lectures on digestion of different nutrients went too quick, and were harder to understand at times.
Perfect just the way it is.
Please make grading less harsh. It seems like the points for quiz seem to count for a lot of points. If the little extra credit points done in class can be worth a little more or at least half point that will help a lot. I do pretty well on the test but my grade isn't that great.

The slides are really lengthy and each slide seems to have something important. This makes it really hard to hand write the notes because she goes kind of fast. I would suggest going over the topic before taking the quizzes. The quizzes are hard.
I think Dr. Stewart's class was amazing!! She made the subject super easy to understand. Just showing up to class, in my opinion, was a good way to guarantee a good grade for yourself. For me, the demonstrations were extremely helpful in understanding more difficult topics. I am a kinesthetic learner, so this helped for concepts to click in my head.

I honestly don't have any suggestions. This was my favorite course this semester and I usually hate science. She is a very good teacher though, that makes the course fun and easy to understand.
I firmly believe that Maria Stewartâ??s teaching style in food science and human nutrition is perfect as it stands. She emphasizes important information, she helps us (students) to look at the big picture and she wants us to succeed. For the course itself, I would like it if there were more review games before tests, especially in the vitamins and minerals chapter. I like being able to flip through those slides and test my current knowledge before a test. I donâ??t like only having one review day, it makes it seem rushed. I feel like having another review day would help to cement the information in studentâ??s brains. Or at the very least, please have 2 review days before the final. Thereâ??s too much information to go over and too little time to review everything. I admit, I would have liked it if we had a little bit more material from the earlier tests that was covered in the final study guide. But only a fraction of the earlier material was covered in the final review session before the final test. In addition, I would like a more specific comprehensive study guide especially for the final exam. There is so much material that was covered throughout the semester, but some of the material is not on the study guide. I realize that the study guide is supposed to be a little bit more streamlined, but it would help if there were more specific study areas and specific questions on the guide so that the final would go a little bit easier.
Make the weekly online quizzes about things you go over in class before we take them.

The class was a little harder than I expected for a 100-level class...thought that some of the material didn't really need to be covered and the tests were extremely hard. Too hard in my opinion especially for a lecture hall where there are so many people in the class and it's more challenging to ask questions and learn the material very well.

I think that Maria already has a great teaching style and methods - it's definitely due to her high knowledge and passion towards the subjects. She made discussing diarrhea and the various causes really interesting to learn! That, I could imagine, would be difficult if I were to try and do it.

Please make sure all powerpoints are updated. My only critique would be to review slides before lectures, so she knows exactly what is on them. Often, she forgets that she had included a fancy transition or illustration to answer or add on supplementary information to slides.

The tests are a bit hard and I struggled with them a lot. Her questions are too confusing and do not relate to what we learn in class or in the slides.

Too many things to remember! Tests are difficult at times because there's so much to remember. But other than that, lectures are great and interesting.

I know that there is gradebook on laulima, but an alert telling what your grade is once a month would be awesome and an alert for those online quizzes every week..
Some of the examples she uses aren't too helpful, and aren't as easy to understand. I wish she could get a stylus pen or something instead of her finger to write on the iPad, since her writing can be illegible at times. Using easy to remember mnemonics would be helpful, such her example of Vitamins A, D, E and K (using ADEK as an acronym).
Send study guides early so students can fill it out along the way.. less stress for them in the end. Talk slower because sometimes cant keep up while taking notes. No time limit for weekly quizzes if due before going over it in class. But if taken after, then 15 minutes time limit is fine.
im not sure if its just me but i find it hard to take in all of the information needed for the test so maybe highlight over the very important things alot more

I thought it was a little ridiculous to have three midterms each of which were pretty difficult and then on top of that to have a cumulative final, I felt that due to this system the class became more about just memorizing facts and figures instead of actually learning about the material and how to apply it to areas in my own life. Because of this system I also just memorized what I needed to know the day before the test and then shortly after forgot most of the information.

Improving course: Not all saturated fat is unhealthy, we need fat to loose fat. I base my diet on low carb and high fat and more traditional nutrition, and were saturated fat is a very important food source. Solid fats like unpasteurized milk, butter, cream and yoghurt, coconut oil, liver, wild fish, etc is super healthy. Scary that young adults are taught to eat low-fat foods and vegetable oils. Americans should really not eat 45-65 % carbohydrates but more healthy saturated fat. If you go online you can read several scientific reports about saturated fat and unpasteurized dairy and how they are good for you. This should be included in our textbook!
She does move rather fast and slowing down on more compicated issues would help. Also maybe review certain material in class more.
No sugggestions, but I will say that I like that she walks around the lecture hall during her lectures. There's something about that that makes class a lot more inviting. It's refreshing, because usually I'll see a teacher just lecturing from the front of the room.

Only that some of the weekly quiz questions were obscure. I always read the material and power points before taking the quiz and sometime still couldn't find a correct answer. It's great she gives these weekly quizzes though because it would be easy to fall behind with the reading if not. Very smart on her part.
I believe that the teaching style she currently has is perfectly fine the way it is, she gives you the tools and the help to achieve a good grade in her course.
i think that the quiz's we need to do worth 5 pts we should get at least one pt for trying because it lowers our grade one percent every 5 pts and they accumulate really quickly. the extra credit quiz's maybe make it worth more than one pt because getting all 4 q's right is a little challenging.
honestly cant think of any. gives good study guides from previous semesters, extra credit for coming to class, weekly quizzes and monthly assignments to help keep up the grades and midterms are alright as long as you go to class.
N/A. An additional note to the class would be to do their own scientific research regarding some of the controversial discrepancies of FDA, EPA, and USDA regulations.
She gave a lot of help, but it was discouraging when I would study so much material and still get a B when I tried for an A. But thankfully, she gives extra credit!
The grading system is a joke. If a quiz on laulima is not taken or not scored well, at least 2% goes down on the grade. The extra point quizzes should be extra points. All that for one point? If it can at atleast build up/earn as extra points for the final or midterms. I feel like the quizzes on laulima weren't as helpful as the games or slides or lecture quizzes we do all together. I know the point is to "know the material "before hand" but all people have to do is look online. I'd rather not gain points than lose a great grade for those quizzes taken each sunday

Slow a bit down on slides that have a lot of info on them. I know the slides are on laulima but some students are able to retain information when it is written themselves.

Sometimes she goes a little fast through her lectures, but luckily the slides are on Laulima so I can write everything down later if I miss something, but sometimes it makes it difficult to keep up because we didn't fully comprehend a previous concept before moving on to another one.
The quizzes were hard to do, even though we could have the book to help us. Reading the textbook did not help much in answering the questions. I think it'd be easier if we gone over the lecture for the quizzes first since it makes the quiz less difficult.

I've thought about this a lot throughout the semester, and I think the best way to improve the class is to have maybe more exams but on less material. I say this because I felt like each exam focused on too many topics, making it difficult to study all of the material needed. Maybe if they condensed exams to like one or two concentrated chapters, and had maybe one or two more exams in order to make up for less being covered in each exam, it'd be easier for students to get more than a C. Just a suggestion, though. It may be just me who thinks this. Also, idk why we had to take the quiz on laulima on a chapter that we didn't even learn about yet. The quizes could've been treated as like review instead of a checkpoint to see if we were reading. A review would've been more helpful.
I think Dr. Stewart is doing great! It is easy to learn from her and is enjoyable.

Do not have quizzes when we have not gone over the information. It would be more effective to go over the topic then have a quiz. I'd even prefer if the quizzes were harder because we knew the information before hand

DONT GIVE QUIZZES ON INFORMATION YOU DIDNT TEACH US!! She also sends out study guides and practice exams. I've finished them, check my answers with others, and memorized everything. With that said, you need all of that and to be a great guesser in order to get an A on the exam. When she sends study guides out, the class emails each other and even collectively with all the resources handed to us, we still can't answer some things. What I mean by this is how she words her questions and has multiple answers. FOR INSTANCE, we had an online quiz and the question was "what food category does peanut butter fall into" She told us to use to find the answer. It told me it was both a protein food and an oil. However, we could only choose one answer. I sent her an email about this and no reply. Now what? You just have to be a good guesser.

Her teaching style suits me well, although on some of the more challenging chapters like vitamins and minerals I feel that those chapters need to be covered more.
Maybe have more assignments or have the quizzes worth more points. But other than that, I like the way the course was taught.
This is already a really good course and Maria is an exceptional professor but if I were to be picky an index of important diagrams (the ones covered in class) would have been useful to have to study for tests it can be tedious to look up where they all were in the powerpoints. But again Maria often went over diagrams before tests so really this is a minor detail.
Possibly going through lectures a bit slower for the students who are actually taking notes, it was difficult for me to keep up at times.

I am in section 002 (mass lecture) and enjoyed it. However, I have been to the more interactive class (in the morning) and like it A LOT more. I was able to connect with the material better and liked the accompanying in-class activities. It was more intimite and helped me understand the material better.
Give weekly quizzes after the topic is covered in class. I learned much from the classtime lectures and would have earned higher scores if I was quizzed post.

Honestly I liked this coarse a lot. Visual aides are used, she is passionate about what she teaches, videos are shown on occasion, and study guides were always provided.
I believe some of the questions on the weekly quizzes were a little difficult to find from the slides and the textbook, especially if a student has the e-text like i did, didn't have page numbers or specific chapters like she stated in class so it was more difficult to use that as a resource.

I felt the course was very effective as is. Her teaching style was engaging and the lectures being available online made it much easier to pay attention to her explanations of the contents rather than focusing on jotting down all of the information on the slides during class time.

I believe that the course content is fairly reasonable and fair. It isn't that difficult if you actually study. You get what you deserve.
Memorization for things for this class is difficult. If possible, make learning these things more fun by associating things with daily life, or using memorization techniques to assist students.

There were a few experiment-style presentations that were really fun and interesting. There should be more of those hands-on type things. And the Quizzes being due on sunday night was difficult to remember. I think it would be much better if they were due on a class day, so that we won't forget it too easily.
It may be nice to include information for the students to find professional help with either eating disorders or overweight issues locally.
Maybe simplify the tests, there was a lot of difficult confusing questions that could have gone either way. I feel like she could also slow down sometimes, especially since there is a lot of material that needed to be covered.

I felt that she did an awesome job this semester! Knowing that the class set up was a little new o her.
I think more videos would be great so that we understand each concept more. I found the videos to give me a better insight about nutrition and our health. The things I've learned is unbelievable and alot to take in but very very interesting.
It was difficult for me to grasp the scientific breakdowns of food because I took this class as an elective, and many students in class are a nutrition or health major. I didn't understand the chemical breakdowns or have the base knowledge of vitamins and nutrients that the rest of the class seemed to have, or that Professor Stew assumed we had.

This usually doesn't happen, but I've got nothing. I really enjoyed everything about this course and Dr. Stewart's teaching styles.
The class I took was the first class she had that wasn't "lecture style". We had access to technologies that were very helpful and useful in the class, as well as groups that were highly effective! I think it's a better way to get a grasp on hard materials when there are resources available for extra help.
Prof. Stewart herself had effective methods for teaching our class. However, the room we had sometimes had things that didn't work so she had to improvise at times. Those things should not be happening quite as often as they did. So, my problem is with maintenance, not Prof. Stewart.

Maybe UH could fix the microphone in a timely manner when it breaks or they could make a touch-screen with a pen which actually draws on the screen where you place the tip and not 1.5" up and to the right.
I think that the test in this class were too confusing. I studied for all my test and knew the material pretty well and when I got to take the test, the questions were not straight forward, it felt like she was trying to trick us and it just made everything so confusing. The quizzes were also on the chapter that was for the next week, I think we should be doing a quiz after we have learned the chapter throughly. The points back exam opportunity was very iffy too because she did not let us know which answers we got wrong on the test so we could correct it and then if we got made a mistake, she minuses points from our test.
We can spend less time on worksheets, but spend more time on working with the board with diagramming. The movies are helpful.
To be honest I thought she did an excellent job. The only difficulty for me was the online quizzes for homework but that's my responsibility.

I would suggest looking over the questions on the test with a students perspective. During past tests the way questions have been worded is very confusing and often leads to getting the question wrong when I know the material.
The course could be improved by adding more demonstrations but overall the class is very entertaining and rewarding.
Have better technology in Webster 101. It prevented her to write out some points on the powerpoints.
More demonstrations would help us remember the concepts better, I think. Also, more student presentations could make the concepts come to life for us, and keep us on track (it never hurts to have more points available, too!).

Wonderful. I wouldn't have preferred another professor teaching this course to me. She really knows what she's talking about and also gives examples of situations (including her own) that really help to authenticate what she is teaching. She is passionate about teaching this course, and it shows in her lectures, teaching methods, and attitude. She stresses the important points, which is nice because there isn't enough time in the world to study every single detail.

In addition, she also is willing to help students that are struggling with either an assignment, a grade, or a test question. Not a bad instructor. I liked her, although I struggle at times, especially with exams. Love that she offers a "points back" opportunity, as I have always been a terrible test taker. I liked that she was enthusiastic about the subject because it made going to class fun instead of boring, which is usually the case when it comes to lecture type courses. I don't know how she got hired as a professor here, one of the least helpful people ever. She comes off as nice and makes corny jokes here and there and the class likes her for that. But this class is constructed where people start cheaing on exams jus to pas. They stopped worrying about memorizing things because it's useless. She made the class where grades are much more important than learning because she's bringing GPA's down when it's just an elective. People stopped caring about learning. When I started losing enthusiasm in the professor, I also stopped liking nutrition as a subject. I wish she didn't do that because I took it to help learn about what to eat and how everything in food works. Now Im just trying to hang onto passing these poorly structured tests.

I liked applying the concepts to real life in Assignment 2. This assignment involved us in tracking what we ate for a day and if it met our macronutrient requirements based on our average level of activity. I am a self-motivated athlete and health enthusiast, so I most enjoyed learning about how to maintain a health body with proper nutrient intake. Also, I'm glad she drops the 4 lowest quiz scores because I often forgot to take the quizzes! I'm sure she understands this, which makes her all the more awesome :)

A lecture based class that is not boring and easy to pay attention to - very hard to find. This course is very applicable, making it much easier to comprehend and use in real life situations.

How much I learned.
I really liked assignment #2 where we had to look at our own diets and use all of the equations and stuff we learned. It was very helpful because it really brought to light the areas in my diet that need help as well as give all of those numbers an equations we learned in class some meaning.

Learning new things about how nutrition will always need to be taken care of in life and it needs to be altered at different points in life.
It was interesting to take these things that have been and always will be a vital part to our lives and actually learn what they do, how they work, and how they affect us.

She is always happy to be there and has jokes and examples on almost every topic. THe tests are challenging but she allows you to fix what you got wrong for partial credit. Also many other grades go into this class so your grade doesn't rely only on test results. This class has probably been the best class I have taken at UH and it's all because of this excellent professor and class structure.

It was easy to learn when she wasn't just reading word for word off the slides. Maria would elaborate on a key concept listed on the power point during the lecture, but one could also understand what was being portrayed by just reading the words on the slide.
Everything was interesting to me, but I especially liked learning about pregnancy.

The fact that she offers "open note, open book, open neighbor" tasks can be extremely helpful. Also, her offering the "points back" opportunity is awesome, as she probably knows some people (like myself) struggle with this class. Seeing you actually do demonstrations, you did it in the first part of the class which I found to be really cool and to be an engaging way for me to learn the material but towards the end it just became powerpoints and you just lecturing which for an hour and fifteen minute class I found it hard to sit through some times.

I liked the exams. I am usually a horrible test taker let alone it being an entire multiple choice exam but the exams were doable. I think there were enough easy to medium to difficult questions evenly distributed amongst the topics. The study guides were very very very helpful in focusing in on key concepts.
I really liked the fact that Dr. Stewart, always had various resources available for students to use before each exam. The study tools she provided for us were very helpful and insightful.

Stewart was not boring! An hour and 15 minutes of a lecture is a lot for a student to have to sit down and listen to someone talk about stuff. But she's funny but still professional and has a good flow. It is easy to learn in this class. And I absolutely loved that she would get our grades back to us right away. In a class where you actually put in a lot of hours for studying, you don't want to have to wait weeks before knowing what your grade is.

rational layout and explanations which were logical and based on real life info. Incorporation of multimedia such as the video about the Karolinska clinic in Sweeden. I like that there is no attendance policy. It is a testament to the quality of the class the high % of students who showed up every day. The mini quizzes (positive reinforcement) are a much better way to entice people to come to class (and have them actually get something out of it) than a compulsory attendance policy. Besides, the tests are sufficiently hard that people who don't study won't get good grades if they haven't come to class.

There isn't anything about the course that I disliked.
How hard it was.
I could have gone without all the stages in life diet stuff. Except for the pregnancy and infant stage for me everything else was kind of common sense stuff you learn in everyday life.
The weekly tests and tricky assignments. The fact that the weekly tests and assignments were part of our grade definitely contributed to the anxiety I had in this class. I would be terrified taking the weekly tests because even though I knew the material, I was extremely scared of doing poorly on the tests for fear that it could sink my grade. I also did not like the tricky assignments. On some of the assignments, the questions were worded in such a way that it was confusing. And to be honest, some of the different questions, such as calculating % of carbohydrate intake was not covered by the professor, so most of us had to extrapolate the information based on what was covered in class. And we got it WRONG. In that case, that information should have been taught to us because we did not learn it in class. Itâ??s wrong to deduct points off students based on the information that was not covered. I found this more of a nuisance, but I didnâ??t like the fact that no one retained the extra credit quizzes. When I emailed the professor and the TAâ??s about the reason I got a point discrepancy, I did not know what I got wrong. They just told me the answers to the mini quiz, but that was not the information I wanted to know. I wanted to know WHAT specific questions I got wrong, so that I could learn from my mistakes and learn the right material before the test. I have now made it a habit to take a picture of my mini quiz before I turn it in so that I can compare it to the answers revealed on Laulima. I wouldn't have to do this if the extra credit quizzes were retained.

Some classes felt like they dragged on a bit. A little more stimulation in the more information based topics would have helped a lot.
Online quizzes. For the first like 8 it would tell me or started the day that it closed.. And I forgot about them.
The weekly quizzes on material we haven't learned yet seems weird. I would have done it the other way: teach the material, then offer the weekly quiz to see what we retained. All the structure cells and such, vitamins/minerals, and the functions/systems were confusing. The biological aspect and some of the mathematical stuff regarding energy expenditure and our BMI/weight/kcal stuff was hard, as I'm awful at math.
Learning about each of the nutrients, especially vitamins & minerals because they were hard topics.

The weekly quizzes were difficult to like all of the time because it was based on material that we would learn the upcoming week, so if you want to do well, you need to read the section and teach yourself. Sometimes I had more motivation than others, and it showed in my grades, so I didn't always like it just because of that.
I did not like the quizzes. I thought they didn't help a lot in trying to make us understand the concepts since they are easily forgettable and I think they bring our grades down.

Some topics in the class were hard to swallow at times, mainly because a lot of the information revolves around some biology, which I've never been very good at.

Chemical processes of nutrients inside the body.
The weekly quizzes - they were great learning tools and a good way to make sure we read and prepped for the materials we would go over in class. However, they were a killer to remember to do every week, and could be bad for your grades if you were forgetful like me. A reminder system somehow being put in place might have helped.

That classroom in the nursing building is pretty weird. It seems like a good idea, however I just prefer a large lecture classroom. Dr. Stewart does a good job tailoring the class to this type of a small-group orientation but it is not my style and found the physical orientation of the seats to be a distraction when I was trying to listen to the lecture. I had rather face the lecturer than only just a TV screen.

I wish we spent less time on worksheets, because it's more individual and homework-like.
Probably the digestive system, but that's because there's so many components that are related to it. Not that I didn't like it, but it was just a lot to memorize.

The way the tests were written.
While I understand that the weekly online quizzes forces students to read ahead and be prepared for the upcoming lessons, I sometimes forget what I read by the time the topic is discussed in lecture. Some subjects take longer to cover and therefore I may read the content for the quiz on Thursday (and do the quiz by Sunday) but the material may not be covered until next Thursday (or the week after). This is just a minor aspect because some topics are still familiar during the lectures.
The exams were pretty difficult, I thought. Quite a bit of memorization, considering most students, I imagine, are taking this for G.E. credit. Maybe ease up on the tests a little.

the exams. I studied for every exam and did horrible on it because the test questions were tricky for me to understand but if the questions were easy like the practice exam and questions we go over in class I would pass so easily
I struggled remembering all the equations
The only things that I did not like about the course was that some of the questions on the tests were worded weird, making them difficult to comprehend, and the practice tests were not very similar to the actual tests. Which made me question whether or not I should even take the practice test and use it as a study tool.
