How to bulk and be huge lol
This course covered a wide variety of aspects concerning nutrition. I've been lifting weights, and until this course, I ate frozen pizzas and candy everyday, and was wondering why I was not making progress strength or body composition-wise. I learned how big of a role nutrition is to weightlifting, especially calories in/calories out, TDEE, and most importantly, the macronutrient content of food. After changing up my diet to a 55 carb/25 protein/20 fat macronutrient split, I was able to see more progress in both strength and my body in 1 month than in the past 4-5 months. This course has reinforced my dream of becoming a RD because it confirmed that I am interested in nutrition and that it is something I am willing to work hard for because I believe that if I can help others struggling with their health and body, it will be all worth it.

Great professor! Pretty much the only class I was looking forward to this semester was my nutrition class, yes the material interests me but it makes a big difference when the professor knows how to lecture has an upbeat tempo, cool examples, great storiesâ?¦ I loved coming to every single one of your classes and not to be rude or anything but today we had a grad student lecturing for sports nutrition, I LOVE that stuff but I almost fell asleep, even once when the TA lectured same ideaâ?¦ Hands down best professor, i'd recommend taking your class to anyone. I feel that in really paying attention in your class made me really do good o my exams it was easy to study because you explain things so well in class i wish there was more professors like you out there seriously ur great!

23. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
More time on review days.
More hands on activity, interactive exercises.
more experiments
I can't think of anything that could make it any better.
None
Study guides need to be more helpful
Sometimes things on the exam were not quite so stressed in class
n/a
More extra credit opportunities and fun quiz games in class.
none
I think that there should be more time spent on each topic so that the students are able to understand everything rather than just memorizing the material for the tests and exams
None whatsoever :)
None. She teaches well!
Maybe to incorporate more in class activities
none
N/A
More in class activities that are hands on or visual More guest speakers
Please do not put trick questions on the exams.
None
Focus into detail about diseases and how to treat them as well. Suggest more ways for students to evaluate health goals in means of nutrition
I have no suggestions. I liked the way this class was taught.
Sustains: 1) Her material caters to most students 2) Her timeline is to the T! 3) Her preparation, she is ready! Improvements: 1) lesser class size (not likely since its a general class) 2) more of Dr. Stewart in UH 3) more study videos
Provide more resources to help study for exam.
NONE! I loved this course, and I had a great time coming to lectures. Honestly, if students went to class and listened to professor Stewart, there would be no issue on the exams. She stresses the key points and informs on which areas to study more than others.
Nothing should be improved. It's perfect!
Nothing really. She is very organized and i love her teaching style, as she keeps you into it.
exams are kind of tricky and hard.
Her style method was good. She highlighted thing that would be important for the exams.
Great teaching style and methods but I get the study guide and then there are questions that are complex and tricky -_- bleh
I don't have any suggestions for improving the course or on Dr. Maria Stewart's teaching style and methods. I liked her teaching style and methods and that we had extra credit and points back opportunities. I enjoyed her powerpoints along with videos to enhance our understanding of the material being covered. The assignments along with quizzes helped us to make sure we further understood the material. She gave us a lot of study materials for help us prepare for her tests.
none.
no suggestions i can think of.
include worksheets to prepare students better, and worksheets help students study
none
The way this course was laid out and presented was better than u could have personally designed. I loved it and thought it was flexible and yet on point.
PLEASE MOVE THE QUIZ DAY! Honestly the hardest part of the class was to remember the quizzes on Sunday. It would be much easier and helpful if they were moved to perhaps tues or thursday when the class is taught so its still on student's minds.
please use only dark colored pens when writing important information about due dates on the board. it was hard to se in the back.
Could stress more on the important subjects. There were a couple questions on the exam that I did not feel we learned too much about. Could incorporate more fun videos and examples.
Add more information on the slides to help do the quizzes
none
Some of the exam questions were difficult for me to answer correctly, even using notes and lecture slides. Maybe be a little more clear with explanations or make the questions easier.
So much information to study for the exam for only 40 question. Its confusing.
Do practice tests in class.
There is nothing to improve. The way class is run and the way that Dr. Stewart teaches is the way a course should really be taught, no matter what subject or course it is.
n/a
When students do email with questions, taking the time to give an elaborated response would be helpful and makes the students feel as if the teacher truly does care and want us to succeed. Most students I know won't email asking for help if they can figure it out by reading instructions/textbook/notes.
Nothing
I don't think there needs to be any improvements because her teaching style and methods were excellent.
N/A
I think this course is set up fine
Stewart is amazing professor. I think I did not like is the videos. I always fall asleep in them, not my thing or I found interesting.
nothing to improve on.
Sometimes the pace is a little rushed, but generally if someone mentions it, she'll slow down so it's not a big problem.
Nothing to change, just keep up a great course and maybe teach more classes :) and maybe even teach chemistry since u have a BA in itâ?¦ I'm not sure if that possible but if you thought chem I'd probably love my chem class, even though its an extremely boring subject I'm sure u'd make it fun and interesting!
N/A
none
None really.
Teaching style/methods: None Course Improvements: I personally felt like the weekly online quizzes were too short and did not properly gauge how much we learned for the amount of points they gave.
The quizzes that are on Laulima have questions that we didn't learn in class yet, cause the quizzes are due before we even learned the material. It's difficult to do well on them. Also, she should come to class dressed as the type of foods that we're learning about that day.

I think an important part of our spiritual well-being should be taken into deep consideration outside of the science; however, I know that they usually do not go well together is Western studies. For spirituality and our personal relationship with our own bodies are unseen and not studied; therefore, we cannot tap into the spiritual healing effects on our overall health and nutrition. The standards are set by data and politics for most parts in my opinion and Maria has a total grasp and understanding of the contents of this course.
Everything is good
I understand there is a lot of content to cover, but maybe slowing down on certain areas, such as the vitamins and minerals, would help a lot more. There was a lot of vitamins and minerals to know and understand so maybe a few more examples would have been beneficial.
How the textbook is distructive to study. I would prefer the hard cover style textbook.
None :)
None, keeping doing you!

Maybe she could slow down her lectures a bit but overall it was good.
Dr. Stewart sometimes goes through the slides a little too quickly.
Don't have assignments due on Sunday. Maybe due 12:00 night before class?
The online quizzes at times didn't match what we learned. Some of the questions didn't match at all. That was a bit frustrating.
I think there can be a more organized way to pass back exams instead of placing each bunch on the floor.
fun and effective
I wouldn't change a thing. She does a great job of teaching and giving out resources that you can benefit from.
She could go a little slower when discussing difficult concepts, sometimes nutrition terms get confusing and sound the same. This would make it easier to take notes.
24. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Exceptional.
Very knowledgeable and fun
She is the best professor I've had so far! I would definitely recommend this class to my friends.
great professor, gained a lot of knowledge
She is a great instructor. She makes the material more than easy to understand and retain. She provides the material in well thought out power point presentations, gives great study guides, does in class test reviews, and even provides extra credit opportunities.

Dr. Stewart is a great professor overall. I would recommend her class to anyone interested in a biology credit, or human nutrition overall. She is also a great person to see if you have any interest in the FSHN major.
She is a knowledgeable teacher who is great at teaching and is very enthusiastic and makes it extremely fun to come to class every week
She's a great professor, and FSHN students are lucky to have her as an advisor.
she is a very fun teacher to take if you plan on learning nutrition because you will learn things you wouldn't know usually on your own.
She is a great teacher and really makes the content enjoyable to learn
Dr. Stewart is a great professor. Her teaching style is definitely very helpful and through this I would no doubt take a class with Dr. Stewart in the future.

Professor Stewart is my ideal vision of a College Professor. She is well immersed in the course content and makes sure that her students are just as immersed. She never misses an opportunity to give the students a full experience. Her qualifications are only part of her great teaching ability. Like I said before she is very knowledgable and feels very strongly about this class so her teaching is superb.
she was an awesome teacher and i would recommend her to other students
Approachable Positive Reliable Resourceful Professional Fair and Impartial on both extra credits and points back Ideal teacher to have since she helps a lot. I hope I had more time to just be around it.
she is very smart and she knows her content which makes learning very easy and beneficial.
She is great. She is super helpful when it comes to asking questions about material. She emails back in efficient time, so I'm not having to wait long without hearing from her. I love class, she is very easy going and funny and she makes hilarious relations from real life to in class. It is a fun yet informative class that I have enjoyed very much.
She is an awesome teacher and I would definitely recommend her. We need more teachers like this at our school. Someone who is just as interested in their learning material enough to make the students just as excited about learning.
Very good teacher.
shes cool and funny
She's a great professor and I would recommend people to take this course from her.

great professor, demonstrates great knowledge of course materials.
She's a great teacher, who has a lot of passion about what she teaches, she makes class interesting and fun, and keeps you focused
Great teacher..it is easier to learn from a person who is passionate about both the subject and teaching.
Great! Keep it up!
She knows what's she's talking about. Better yet, she knows how to teach this course, and well at that! Would most definitely recommend other students to take a class instructed by her!

Excellent Professor
Great! She's a very nice teacher that teaches well. She is also very helpful in offering extra credit!
Great teacher! Should never change the way she teaches.
Great!!! Give a raise!!
a great food science teacher.
A good teacher who knows her topic well and wants her students to share her knowledge and excitement.
A very informative teacher and enthusiastic which makes it easier to learn the material
Dr. Stewart is a great teacher. I would give her an A for her teaching styles. She is very helpful and gives us chances so long as we come to class.
She is a wonderful professor who is passionate and very knowledgable about her course.
Great!
She is a very good professor. I learned alot in this class and I happy that i took it.
An awesome professor. She always has my attention. Her experiments are amazing too. She provide examples in real life to the class and I like it. She has a loud, clear voice that portray a sense of knowledge and passion for this class.
I think she's honestly one of the best professors I've had. I learned so much this semester.
great prof.
She's a passionate, prepared teacher, and I would recommend her to any of my peers.
I pretty much said it all above :) Keep up the amazing work!
(positive)
she's a great professor who know a lot about what's teaching.
Very kind and forgiving of students, IE. test corrections, online quizzes.
She is absolutely fantastic and has made my first semester at UH Manoa a wonderful experience.
One of my favorite teachers.
she was a great teacher
She's highly effective as an instructor because she practices what she teaches and her life is clearly revolving around FSHN. She's awesome!
Good professor
She is an excellent professor. She is thorough and makes sure that she covers content that can only be heard by attending class. She helped me to maintain a consistent class attendance through her engaging topics.
Great professor!! Many extra credit opportunities!!!
A wonderful professor, I wouldn't mind taking another class from her.
The Best I've had so far:)
She is a great professor- one of the best that I have had here at UH. Her assignments were very clear, and I liked that she used the grade book feature on Laulima. It made it very easy to track my progress. She was very organized and on top of it for all of our classes and she was open to answering any questions during lecture. She also keeps pace with student's abilities to take notes during lecture, making sure that everyone has enough time to take note of everything she says or writes on the board.
Great Professor!
She is a fun teacher.
Great! She is one of the best professors I have had at the university.
Great work
She is a great teacher!
That she should continue to do what she is doing.
Dr. Stewart was a good and engaging teacher. I like her examples and visuals, which helped make the learning more interesting. The online assignments were helpful for exams and I liked how we had at least 3 tries to improve our grade. I thought that her way of earning points back for exams were fair and helpful.
very good
I think she is AWESOME!!!! She is one of the best teachers I've had and I would love to have her again! She always makes class fun and entertaining and keeps the attention of the class. She is very understanding and helpful and prompt when you email her. I like her a lot!
She's a great professor, positive attitude and very fun! The material is a little complicated sometimes, but she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities, "point back" assignments, and multiple chances to get a good grades on quizzes.
Great instructor!

29. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Sports Nutrition and pregnancy.
involving the entire class in discussion
Dr. Stewarts relevant videos and exercises, especially the Nutrition Assessment were my favorite and most helpful aspects of the course.
Relatable to real life
The parts that I can apply to my life
Learning about nutrition and other aspects that I can use throughout my life.
The fun class discussion.
Extra credit, test corrections, and that everything on the slides was on the test, no curveballs.
The exams and assignments are very straight forward. Lectures are engaging and interesting. Many opportunities to raise course grade.
I liked the assignments because they give you the time to understand and apply what you have learned so you can have more success in the course overall
Online quizzes and study guides.
I like the points back system where we could go back and correct our previous answers to get half the points from the mistakes. Also the daily in-class quizzes we get to take that is open notes, friends, and answers.
Having review days before the. Exams
points back on tests
The mini quizzes! More incentive to attend class
I liked the in class activities best, I felt like it demonstrated the concepts very well and was interesting to go to class. I liked that we were able to make up points that we missed on the test and the online quizzes were a good way to receive points.
Learning about what can help my daily diet to become healthier.
I like all of the extra credit opportunities. The class was designed for success which is awesome. I learned a lot and it was a great experience.
I liked how we had many components to our grade. I also liked how she would let us make corrections to our exams and the concept of how she allows us to make points back made total sense and I ended up learning more from that.
Easy and straight forward
i like how there were practice exams because it gave us a sense of what the actual exam would look like. i also liked that the quizzes were online. test corrections were a good way to learn more about the material
Videos Breakdown of Food and the Science behind it. DIet plans
Learning about nutrients and the functions of every one of them .
I liked the online quizzes because I felt that they helped me prepare for the exam really well. I also liked how the lecture slides were on Laulima, because even though I take notes every time I go to class, for the days that I miss, having access to the lecture slides is so helpful (and they're also a good resource to use for studying).
I liked how there was a pattern to the course. You knew when quizzes were due so as not to miss one. And there were not any surprises.
I enjoyed learning about the dieting and nutritional part of the course.
things other than lecture slides
I liked learning about the vitamins and minerals and what happens when you don't have enough in your system.
I like how she gave us these little mini quizzes and hw so that if we don't really do that well in exam we can boost our grade just a little doe :)
The aspects of the course that I liked best was the extra credit opportunities and the points back system. Not only did it help with my grade, but it made us think and learn about which answers on the test we got wrong.
everything.
i like how dr stewart made the course enjoyable for such a boring (to me) subject. i actually find nutrtion not so boring anymore and would totally recommend someone to take this class. i like how easy i could follow along to a subject i was unfamiliar with
Learning about health nutrition and applying it to my diet
The quiz every sunday
I like the simple, clean cut layout and how we followed pretty well with the timing in the syllabus.
The visual aids
test make up points and various extra credit mini quizes
I enjoyed the overall aspect of this class.
In class extra credit quiz
I liked when she showed us videos during lectures to help us get a better understanding of the material. Also I liked how she gave us an opportunity to better our exam scores
The weekly quizzes online, extra credit opportunities, PowerPoint lecture slides for good visual learning, study guides for exams, and assignments all helped towards learning and studying for the course!
Points back after each exam is really helpful. Exam reviews before exams are helpful also.
I enjoyed the videos she showed in class. I thought they were interesting.
I liked being in the class and listening what she had to say. She always had new topics.
That each section was organized and explained well in detail. There was no confusion between distinguishing sections. I also liked how a lot of times, the course material was always related back to the real world (e.g. videos in class).
Multiple choice and the tests were current with what we were studying. The information tested was not so much that it was impossible to study for.
Pregnancy nutrition and daily food intake for my body type and active lifestyle
I found the whole class interesting.
Vitamins/Minerals
I liked the demonstrations Dr. Stewart did.
All aspects of the course are the best because each one related to another. For example, after learning about the essential nutrients, we would learn about the negative effects that it would have on our bodies if we consume less or more than the RDA.
-Study guides -Practice exams -Lecture slides -Online quizzes/assignments
I liked how the midterms allowed us to get points back so that you look over your past mistakes.
The topic and professor teaching style was fun. Her topics and stories are fun. She gives a lot of extra credits, and her exams are fair.
Everything
topics
The clarity in which material was presented, but also how it was relatable to my own life. I liked the diet planning section the most, for that reason.
I liked it all, this subject really interests me :)
I enjoyed the structure of the class.
The lecture, the mini extra credit, the exam reviews and freebies, and the assignment on food diary.
Learning how to bulk lol
Professor Stewart is able to teach a large amount of information at a perfect speed. She is fast enough that she can cover approx. 45 slides in just 2 classes, but explains everything in-depth which allows students time to catch-up and write down notes and her explanations.
Being able to correct exams.
everything was great overall
The relatable material
I enjoyed learning more about the pregnancy, eating disorder side of Food Science, mostly because that is diving more into my Family Resource major.
Being able to apply the things that we learn in the class to everyday life.
Videos, assignments and extra credit quizzes.
I enjoyed learning how to plan a diet and the section about eating disorders, specifically the video about the clinic is Stockholm.
I liked the little snippets of humor that make the class relatable.
I enjoyed the Jeopardy games and reviews we had before exams
I liked the assignments becasue they were very relatable. For example, examining my own diet to see what I can improve was interesting. I enjoyed learning about the science behind the things we eat everyday and how it affects our bodies.

the professor
The beginning because it wasn't so complex, but she did a great job of explaining it.
I liked the extra credit and "point back" assignments. That helped my grade tremendously.
What I liked the best in the course was the examples used.
30. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Vitamins and minerals.
remembering the weekly quiz
NA
Exams
The tricky exam back points lol
none
I disliked the exams because she would put more than one correct answer on the exam and you would have to pick not only the right one but the one that the teacher wanted to see
WileyPlus
I actually like everything about the course and nothing I didn't like.
The cumulative final
Low number of assignments.
none
N/A
The aspects of the course that I liked the least was the beginning chapters when we had to learn about the concepts that weren't all that applicable to every day eating
I studied very hard for the exams and I thought I knew the material well but I did not make as good a great as I was expecting to. There were trick questions on the exams that messed me up.
One of the assignments were long and time consuming but not bad.
Sooo much diseases but didn't go much into detail

Pregnancy stuff... Vitamins
learning about things about intro into biology.
I don't really like the room too much. The desks are tiny.
I didn't like that for the tests, after we submitted out points back that we don't know what the right answers were.
Nothing.
taking exams
Nothing.
I sucked at taking the exams :(
No aspects of the course that i liked least. This is my first semester at UH Manoa as a transfer student. I was intimidated coming into this, but taking this course from Dr. Maria Stewart, helped me overcome it. I really enjoyed this class and I am glad that i took this course from Dr. Stewart, as I learned a lot.
none.
nothing really.
biology of the science
How everything was online, so you had to remember to do everything yourself, and no make ups were allowed
Nothing in particular stands out to me.
The quizzes on sunday
I disliked the tests.
Final exam that is some what cumulative!
There was a lot of quizzes we had to do. Almost every weekend we had a quiz.
The only aspect of the course I didn't like were the student guest speakers.
Some of the exam questions were really hard for me to answer even if I studied for the exam a lot and looked back at the questions with notes and lecture slides. The way they were worded confused me.
I didn't like the exams. Even though I studied for the exams, I still did terrible.
Some days, it would just be all slides, which wasn't too bad, since that was only a fraction of the semester when we would come to a class with only slides.
Twice I turned in corrections to my exam, but never knew why I did not receive any additional credit for my effort. I submitted odd number of correct questions so my grade should of at least fluctuated by half a point. Also, its obvious the TA's make the test, which is ok, but the grammar on some questions made the test difficult to understand or left the question's answer ambiguous between two possible answers.
vitamins and minerals
I know we have to have them, but who likes tests?
I did not like how sometimes the quizzes were about things that were not fully covered in class.
None because I liked each aspect of the course.
N/A
I dont like how the quizes that were due each week was on the material we didnt finish at the time.
Sometimes she goes a little too slow but I understand why she does that.
sometimes I would forget to take my quizes on laulima on sundays. But that's my fault.
When other teachers lectured, they moved way too fast through the material, so I don't feel like I understood the lectures they gave...also, sometimes the quizzes were on material we had not yet covered, so that was a little more challenging to complete.
N/A
The exam.

The middle is where it got kind of tricky, but after that it wasn't bad at all.
Taking notes and following along in class may get overwhelming sometimes.
The thing I least liked in the course was some of the pictures in the presentations.

Overall, a great class and great professor! I learned more than I expected to learn!
Overall, I was glade I took the course. Did I get an "A" no, but that was my fault not the instructor. I believe all students gained some knowledge from the class.
I did enjoy having Maria Stewart as my teacher. The days where we had grad students teach weren't nearly as interesting. It was harder to grasp the material that the grad students tried to teach.
Maria Stewart is a welcoming professor who highly encourages her students to seek for help when needed to. She is passionate about her job and the course she teaches.

11. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I learned how to maintain a healthy diet
How to be healthy. I'm really underweight and I get tired and sick really quickly, so this class helped me understand what my body needs.
My health and physical activity lifestyle. How to improve them.
I learned what nutrients, and the amount of those nutrients, I need to maintain a healthy body weight. I was able to analyze my diet and found that I am lacking in many vitamins and minerals, and that a multi-vitamin supplement might be a good option.
I learned about the kcal deficit that could help me reduce my weight. I am into these nutrition aspects and I can actually put it to good use everyday. I actually learned a lot about food that I use to see if my food is high in nutrient density.
I now know more about human nutrition and how it's important to me personally.
What I got from this course that will benefit me personally is being more aware of the foods that I consume. I now know what makes an ideal diet and can alter my own diet to meet certain nutrition requirements.
i learned better ways to achieve a balanced and healthy diet. but there was also much focus on the physiologic impacts of nutrition which was very interesting
A better understanding of basic nutrition concepts and how to apply them to analyzing and improving my own diet and health.
I get to apply the things I've learned about nutrition to my own life.
Great knowledge learned for having a proper diet. Really opened my eyes.
The course itself informs me about proper nutrition and healthy practices.
I become more informed about the nutrition I've been getting everyday. I will use this to maintain my health and well-being.
Making a good decisions on choosing food every time I plan to eat out or plan to cook at home. So I would consider to include protein, fruit/vegetables, grains and diary in a meal and balance out through the day.
All of the material taught can benefit me everyday because I now have the knowledge to make good food decisions which can help me live a healthy lifestlye.
I have learned about what nutrients by body needs and what kinds of foods I should try to avoid or rarely eat. I am trying to get in the best shape of my life and being able to eat properly is a huge step for that, so this course has shown me what I can eat in order to reach that goal.
How what I eat everyday directly effects my body and how so, giving me the opportunity to change the way I eat in turn changing for the better the way I live and feel.
I learned about the macro and micronutrients I need to attain, and how I could incorporate new foods to reach my needs.
I learned about my diet and how much calories I need to eat a day to get bigger. And I also learned how to eat a healthy life style to live longer.
Diet change.
I already had a degree in biology when I decided to take this course. In just one month it is the most useful class I have ever taken. The information is something that I can apply to life eating choices every day to live a healthier lifestyle.
I learned more about the status of my health and how to stay healthier. I adapted a new and better lifestyle as well.
This course benefits me personally by eating healthy and knowing the daily nutrients needed.
Just a better understanding of a healthy diet and life style. It's something I can use in my actual life even after I'm done with this course.
Will help with my major.
I learned to think about my personal health and how I can apply food science to improve my current lifestyle.
I now know exactly what I am putting into my body and how it will be used.
reminded me to live a healthy lifestyle and watch what goes in my mouth and what my diet consists of.

I am glad she went the extra mile to add audio towards the difficult topics
n/a
The class was very organized and manageable. I found the powerpoints, as well as the lectures, very helpful in learning the course material. Dr. Stewart kept us updated through email and the class was easy to follow. I never felt unable to ask her or one of the TAs for help.
I think her recorded lectures were very professional since those were the only times I actually could tell how her teaching style was. She was very professional in them and it was easier to follow than reading the powerpoints by myself.
The website was set up perfectly. Though I had some difficulty with the quizzes throughout the session because I had a hard time pinpointing the important facts.
Very knowledgeable and willing to help.
she was very prepared and very organized which helped the course run smoothly in this short amount of time. she was also generous with reminders of due dates so that we don't miss anything
The recorded lectures were clear and professional; all emails from Professor Stewart were also very professional and helpful.
She seemed to be very enthusiastic about the course.
Didn't meet her but through emails sounds wonderful.
Professor Stewart stays active with the online class, reminding us about deadlines and giving us feedback as quick as possible.
I thought that she was very professional with her attitude and behavior during the online, pre-recorded lectures, which was my only real interaction with her.
I never had any direct contact with her, the only emails I sent her were responded by the T.A.
Professor Stewart was always available for questions and gave great and understandable answers.
Professor Stewart's attitude was great and enthusiastic in the videos. Her behavior was professional.
Recorded lectures were great but never actually met her since this was an online class.
Maria replied instantly to emails and when help was needed. This course was well-organized and contained a lot of information that was broken down through power points.
Very nice and accommodating, especially when I was having issues with the iprofile.
Online class behavior is professional.
She was very clear about the course material and would remind us what was due and when. Since this is an online course, it was pretty straightforward.
Although this was an online course, she was very engaging and it seemed like she cared deeply about her students' grades and success in this class.
fine, like any other instructor
23. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
More class discussion
Use "announcements" more than emails.
Maybe more lecture videos. This was a very tricky class especially since it was not person to person. Also to update the page numbers, it was very confusing.
None.
I loved how this class was taught. The powerpoints really covered all the material we needed to know. It challenged you to look up extra material to gain further understanding. The extra readings were very beneficial too. The only thing is that I know this was a summer course and it is fast paced. But I didn't like how some modules were more difficult to grasp than others and they were due at the same time. The exams were due the same time as the quizzes.
1.) don't have students get a text book, 2.) Have more collab for modules! they were helpful. 3.) Have updates about assignments more often.
some powerpoints and resources didn't seem to help with quizzes
More recorded lectures may be helpful in the future or more activity on the discussion boards so that students were encouraged to work together to understand and apply concepts.
N/A
N/A
Everything was helpful and the power points were straightforward. The quizzes and tests pertained to the lecture material.
Maybe have a day a week that students get log into the chatroom and discuss with other students and Professor Stewart in order to clear up anything that they did not understand from the unit due that week.
...
I suppose have more online lecture videos available.
I like the teaching styles and methods, but it would have been nice if there was homework to keep us busy with the course.
There were some issues with quiz and exam answers so there should be an opportunity to make those points back if there is a good enough reason to why you chose an answer.
I love that the online course is designed so that you can go at your own pace. The recorded lectures make me feel like I am in class.
Sometimes the modules were not able to be uploaded or viewed. Maybe there could be alternative ways to see the material. Also, there were issues with laulima allowing the students to view the answers to quizzes. The exam dates =should not fall on the same dates as the quizzes so that the student can review material not grasped to prepare for the exams.
More recorded lectures.
I would say, include more interactive activities that coincide with the terms and lessons. I like to learn through activiites rather than just take quizzes.
None.
name the modules and slow down a little
24. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She did a good job presenting the material and I learned much more than I expected to from an 6 week online course.
She was okay from what I can tell. The course wasn't long enough and didn't require enough interaction for me to make a good judgement.
good.
very good. This was the first online class I've ever taken and was surprised at how organized and well planned out it was. I definitely look forward to taking more classes from Dr. Stewart.
I think she is a wonderful teacher and she understands FSHN very well. I learned a lot from this course and its an online class. This class made me study instead of looking for the answers when I'm doing the quizzes or tests. Even though I did not actually interact with her on an everyday basis since it is online I still feel like she taught me well.
The course is good and informative and organized.
Great teacher. Provides a ton of valuable information that can help throughout life.
great professor, great course
This was a very interesting class and Professor Stewart helped make the content clear and understandable. I have no complaints!
Although it was an online class, it was good instruction.
Awesome.
fair, organized, and available when needed.
Good! It was a very informative course.
She gave us tools in the powerpoints to help us succeed on the quizzes and learn many important things.
Neutral.
She is an awesome teacher and truly makes this class interesting
My overall evaluation of Maria Stewart is an A. She is a good teacher and provides us with a variety of teaching methods that keeps focused.
Organized a great class.
She enunciates very well.
Excellent! Overall, class was pretty much easy and on point.
I took away more than I expected to from this class. I'll definitely be putting the information on health to good use.
great instructor.
I enjoyed the online course because it taught me a lot about the different ways nutrition affects our health and the reasons behind common deficiencies.
Dr. Stewart is a great and organized instructor.

29. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed how the harder topics where taught via blackboard with audio for the students to listen along with the slides. The diet analysis project was extremely helpful in my understanding of nutrition.
The fact that we could work as far ahead as we wanted to.
It was online and we had our own timing but that was difficult at the same time.
I liked the additional resources that were available to illustrate the concepts we learned from the book.
I liked how all the material were organized in modules. It was really easy to follow. The powerpoints were really done good since I learned a lot from it. It didn't leave anything out that we needed to know.
It was organized and applicable to myself.
I liked the diet analyses project because it was breaking down my own personal diet and what I could do to alter it.
many opportunities for grading so our grades weren't only based on big exams
The textbook and additional resources were easy to read and clearly explained the concepts. The videos and web pages selected were relevant and expanded on my knowledge of the topics.
That I get to learn about things that I can apply to my own life.
Everything
There were no trick questions on the tests or quizzes; the assessments at the end of each module asked about the important points of each chapter.
The breakdown of lessons. It made it easier to process the material in bitesize amounts.
Nice to have modules organized and follow through for lectures in the class.
I liked that the modules were broken up into different sections and not just one long powerpoint.
The concepts of food science and human nutrition that connect with everyone and every day life.
I loved how there was online chat, and how the TAs were always available and answered emails quickly and efficiently
The video lectures done by professor stewart.
Projects on personal health. These projects really helped me in figuring out what is missing from my diet.
I liked all of it.
I liked that this course was all online because unlike other online courses, we would have to come in to a testing test. I like how this course was open book. I like that this course went well with my time.
The diet part. It showed us what we were really doing to our body.
The whole course in general. Really enjoyed learning about nutrition.
The material and how the course was organized.
I liked learning about how much food I should actually be eating.
that it was about things I could relate to, nutrition, diet..
30. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
None. The assignments were divided well for the short amount of time we had.
3 quizzes, a midterm and a project in 1 week is a bit much.
The ta chat hours.
I wish we could have had more time for the exams so I could write better essay answers.
The due dates. Some questions were difficult to answer because I did not read about it. For instance asking about fast food. It did not refer back to the readings.
I didn't like the confusion with the due dates of assignment 3 and certain questions were worded strange.
The timed quizzes stressed me out.
Taking quizzes and exams on Laulima was trying at times due to connectivity issues and Laulima downtime.
N/A
Nothing.
None
A lot of quizzes and confusing part on readings when it's not matching to their edition. So some readings did not cover on some questions from quizzes.
I felt as though there was a lot of information and nowhere to really discuss our questions or concerns with peers or the professor other than through email, which can take a few days.
The syllabus could be more clearly written, especially when describing the requirements/instructions for the projects.
N/A.
The module quizzes that sometimes didn't have the answer in the module or book.
times quizzes, maybe give a little longer
I didn't like trying to record what I ate but the knowledge I gained from it was huge.
Everything pretty much went well but the quizzes were semi-tricky.
Using iprofile, it just didn't work to well with me.
n/a
The pace, but it couldn't be helped because it was a summer course. Also, I felt like some of the quiz questions sprawled from the available material.
I disliked learning about the mechanical processes of digestion and absorption.
the pacing of the class, a bit fast
31. Other comments:
I am surprised how much I've learned/accomplished within 6 weeks. This was an informative online course.
I'm very glad I took this class and have learned a lot about nutrition.
Email should be checked everyday.
I learned a lot that will benefit me in the long run.
Perhaps in the future, a better system could be in place for referring to portions of the textbook to read? Many times page numbers were given as the assigned reading. I had an online version of the textbook and couldn't find page numbers, so I had to search through the chapters for the correct sections. Just one thought :)

11. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I gained a better understanding of adult nutrition and gained new insight into infant, toddler, and adolescent nutrition, which was very interesting.
I liked reviewing SuperTracker, and would potentially use it.
I gained a lot of knowledge about nutrition through the life cycle. EVERYTHING that I learned will benefit me because all the material applies to my everyday life. Not only what I learned will benefit me, but it will benefit others around me. I can help family with varying ages with their nutrition and also help friends.
different things to eat to get the right amount of nutrients needed for myself as well as helping others stay healthy at their age.
Nutrition that my future family members will need such as my child, or parents who will be elders soon.
I now know what kind of diet I should be eating when I do decide to have children later in life.
Aside from learning a great deal about nutrition for all ages, I think I increased my writing skills. I have become more efficient at expressing my thoughts and ideas in words. The discussion posts and assignments were very helpful.

Dr. Maria Stewart is very professional. She is very willing to help you whenever you need it. She answers all my emails with very friendly responses. She seems like shes always in a good mood so that makes me comfortable to email her about help without feeling nervous. She really has a passion for what she does!

i thought there could have been more quizzes to be prepared for exams, but as long as you really read the book, you will do well on the exams.
Honestly, the course is great. The format was great. I had no problems with the course. The course modules always worked, that's a big plus. Also, because this was a summer session, the work was manageable, it wasn't over whelming. Her methods of power points worked great and her method of the synchronous sessions was very helpful.
maybe be more detailed in certain assignments, give an example
The articles that we were required to read were really difficult to understand.
I think that more online virtual classroom sessions should be incorporated. I found it helpful for the instructor to emphasize and go over key points, especially since there is so much information presented in shortened amount of time.
24. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She was very nice and genuine. This was my first online class that I have taken and it was a challenge to overcome the no classroom aspect, but I managed to get a hang of it because she made everything as well as herself very accessible and easy to communicate with.
good.
she is a great teacher overall!

29. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I always enjoyed Nutrition in its entire being, but learning about infant, toddler, and adolescent nutrition was very interesting.
although time consuming, i did appreciate the activities and assignments we were assigned to learn the material and apply it to assigned situations.
Love the modules, they were very organized and I knew exactly what to study. Best part was the synchronous sessions!
the discussion posts
Book we used and lectures or exams are related. some classes are not.
I did best on all the assignments.
The YouTube videos. It offered an alternative source of learning besides reading the textbook. It kept me engaged and paying attention.
30. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The fact that it was a lot to take in, in such a short amount of time. Summer courses don't give you the time to digest the material fully and might cause you to be lacking in areas that people who take during a regular semester know of.
none
Maybe the fact that it was online, but that's my problem.
the assignments and some of the activities
I did not like taking the exams online. The laulima system is too slow for students to be taking exams and it glitches.

11. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I learned how to eat healthy and how to maintain a healthy life. I also learned what will happen to my body if I do not take care of it, not eating properly, and not exercising.
I learned a lot of valuable health skills that I can apply to my every day life. I also learned the more scientific side of nutrition which helped me understand the class as a whole
A great introduction to nutrition.
I learned how to plan a balanced diet that will keep me healthy.
Healthy life changes
how to make food decisions.
Eating better and knowing how to have a better diet.
I learned a lot from this course because nutrients strongly related to daily life I knew some of the information but I didn't know most of the information I learned in the class
information about nutrients
Healthy habits
knowing which food should i eat
I learned a lot more about vitamins and other supplements that I didn't know before; especially about common misconceptions people who workout a lot have.
How to properly form a healthy diet that works for my body.
Help me keep a good diet, and know what each food provides me more than just taste
An understanding of nutrition that I can apply to my everyday life and because of it I can live a healthier lifestyle.
The things that I have gotten from this course include practical nutritional knowledge. Iâ??ve been able to categorize different types of foods into their respective food groups and determine what types of nutrients they have. Whatâ??s interesting about this course is that Iâ??ve been given the knowledge necessary so that I can live a long healthy life, and a major component of this is the types of foods we eat and the lifestyle choices we make. Iâ??ve also been able to Iâ??ve also gained an understanding about food in general. Food canâ??t be categorized into â??goodâ?? or â??badâ??, it depends on the situation and the person. The most important thing that I got about this class is that most foods are required to gain all of the nutrients needed for a balanced diet. In addition, Iâ??ve learned how to be able to read a food label, so that I can accurately compare different foods nutritional numbers. Furthermore, Iâ??ve been able to learn how to calculate the amount of kcal I need a day based on my individual lifestyle. I will definitely use that information to help moderate my eating habits and what I eat through the day.
I gained a lot more knowledge about dieting, such as more muscle = higher metabolism = burning of more kcal.
How to eat well and use my knowledge of nutrition to make healthy choices according my lifestyle.
Everything.
What I got from this course that will benefit me personally would be the knowledge of everyday nutritional facts. I now know what vitamins and minerals do what functions within my body, and I know where to receive all of my nutrients. I also gained the knowledge of what diseases arise from nutrient deficiencies.
My understanding of eating a variety of foods to help me nutritionally.
I learned how to eat and live healthier
I learned a lot about nutrition and how to be healthy through out my life.
Knowledge on how to live a healthier lifestyle.
knowledge about my own perspmal nutrition and diet
I learned a lot of about nutition and how i can use it to my benefits, especially knowing what to eat.
how to eat healthy and healthy weight loss
Maintaining my diet is what I benefit from this course. I learned that I lack in certain fields of nutrition such as not drinking an adequate amount of water or sometimes not reaching my RDAs.
Healthy foods and how they affect the body
My health
I will definitely incorporate better eating habits along with regularly going to gym. Knowing how your body works is half the battle.
I learned how to plan a fully nourishing and healthy diet. I learned about the healthy way to lose weight and that it is a lifestyle changing process and doesn't happen overnight.
I will use all this information in my life. SHe did a phenomenal job of being excited every class and keeping the lectures really interesting
I have taken a nutrition course a few years ago but it was not nearly taught as clear and concise as Dr. Stewart taught it. I picked up a lot of valuable things from this course especially about eating habits and making sure my meals are more nutrient dense.
i benefited personally from becoming more informed about some functions of the body and how food affects our body.

She was a really good teacher and mad things fun and easy to understand, she really helped relate things to real life
VERY professional and a kind, easy-going, and funny behavior.
Professor Stuart is very professional and passionate about the topic of food science and nutrition. She always dresses professionally, but more than that, Professor Stuart is a great teacher. She teaches in a very simplified and pointed manner, which is good because it helps us (students) to digest and learn the information. She also makes the information we are covering relevant to our own lives. Iâ??ve learned a lot in this course, and honestly, her passion about nutrition can be seen in her teaching. She wants every single student to do well, and it shows. She gives us extra credit to help those that may be struggling, she is specific in her study guides about what material we should study for tests. And even though I disliked taking those weekly tests, she was kind enough to always remind us when there was an upcoming weekly test due. Even during spring break.
I was hesitant to withdraw from the course, but after talking to professor Stewart, I chose to stay with it, ultimately b/c she seemed to genenuinly care about helping me get my grade up.
She is very engaging and positive. A true professor!

good attitude and behavior, very passionate which made going to class not as boring.
She is very helpful and very friendly. I love this class because of her!
She was prepared with great power points for each lecture and was able to communicate the ideas clearly in a way that students could understand
There were a lot of technical problems in the lecture hall we were in and she was always able to get by even if something out of her control failed. She hardly skipped a beat.
she presented our notes easy to understand and write down, she kept our grades updated online a lot which is really helpful. also that she would stress about foods that, it's not necessarily that you should never eat an unhealthy food its just about proportion.
Very enthusiastic about teaching and about the class.
pretty cool for a white girl
Her teaching style incluldes waving through powerpoints at such a fast pace you can't get what she's saying. Also, every sunday, she gives a 15 minute online quiz on information WE HAVENT GONE OVER YET! Then tells you in the next class the information and tells you why you got the questions wrong. This completely goes against common sense. She is terrible with technology, she writes notes on the laptop using a paintbrush-like tool and it's ALWAYS undistinguishable. It looks like arabic or something. Use TEXT or something legible. I've come up several times after class asking questions. One was if she accepts late work, since she failed to mention it on the syllabus. She simply laughed at me like a rich man laughing at the helpless homeless, then said "no" with an evil look in her eye. Shes mad that everyone (or maybe anyone) isn't a NUTRITION MAJOR! Its a class of 200+ taking it for an elective and she just hates that people arent enthusiastic about nutrition. Another time, I asked her after class, simply, what food group mayonnaise fell under. I told her I was confused if it had enough oil in it to make it an oil, and she dodged the question by telling me there are sources on the internet to answer my question.
Professor Maria was an enthusiastic teacher. When she would get excited over the material I felt myself getting excited as well! She would use examples that related to today's society and do experiments to help us remember the material better. She was always professional and was always willing to answer any questions about food nutrition.
She is a really fun professor. She's good at keeping the class entertained.

I appreciate that Dr. Stewart is passionate about what she teaches. This passion complements the material. Her attitude is contagious and really encourages a positive learning atmosphere. Her behavior is professional, but not so uptight that you feel like you can't ask questions.

Great attitude towards the subject. Very passionate and knowledgable about what she does
Really enthusiastic about the material and motivates students to do well in this class.
Very professional and well prepared.
She is professional in a way that is not uptight, she relates to us. Think of it as not talking down on us, but talking to us.
She's willing to teach us in an interesting way.
Professional. Might come off a little too assertive when asked simple questions regarding returned assignments and/or tests. It may be that she hears it from students all day though but I have a full plate a stress on my table as well. She cool though.
She's very enthusiastic, making class really fun. Yet, she is still very organized and professional.
Very good teacher. Knows alot about subject, pretty interesting and fun to listen too. Friendly and helpful, lenient grader with lots of extra credit opportunities.
Very organized and had effective communication.
It's easy to be knowledgeable in your field of study, but to be enthusiastic about it is difficult. Probably one of the best lecturers I'll have in my college experience.
The midterms were very difficult even with lots of studies! Point back opportunity only help a little bit, not so much!
She is very professional and organized. Even though some of the material is complex she gave lots of tools so if studied then the exams were not too difficult.
Dr. Stewart has a very positive attitude and it very enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches.
She is very enthusiastic and looks like she enjoys teaching us and we all can see that :)
Very professional attitude and behavior. Always came to class with a goal and a topic of discussion. Very appropriate for a lecture hall.
She is a very organized and enthusiastic teacher, which encouraged me to be the same in that class. She knows how to use personal examples and experiences without crossing the line, so it's nice because her students can get to know her on a more personal level without it being too much.
Fine, just fine.
Funny, Knowledgable.
Maria was always very professional but at the same time, she was very approachable. She would answer questions in a way that was very scientific and very relatable at the same time.
positive
very enthusiastic!
She was very professional. She was very willing to help her students to understand the material and get the best grade possible. She made me contemplate getting a nutrion major.
She was funny and sociable but professional and commanding when needed. She captured the class' attention well.
She was very professional but at the same time lead the class with enthusiasm and made it fun.
great! always happy and always excited to teach each class.
She was extremely professional and had a great attitude everyday.
Maria Stewart was a great professor! She presented the information in a way in which we could all understand it. She was a fun professor and I wouldn't mind taking another class from her.
She reminds me a bit of Amy from the Big Bang Theory - a very proud nerd with great enthusiasm for her work and a really quirky sense of humor. She made herself very approachable and worked hard to make the material easy for the class to digest (no pun intended).
She was very passionate & enthusiastic about what she taught her students. Always encouraging us to ask questions when we don't understand something. She made the class fun & interesting.
Very Positive and organized.
Her attitude and behavior was perfect for a FSHN professor
I lover her enthusiasm for the course and interest in helping the students do really good for the course/
Professor Stewart was awesome because she was always happy and energetic.

Enthusiastic
Friendly; confident in what she's talking about; fun; good examples
very enthusiastic
I appreciate Dr. Stewart's enthusiasm for this course. I think if she wasn't so enthusiastic about the material, the course would be boring. She definitely keeps me engaged in class material.
One of the more enthusiastic teacher, cares about the students and makes you want to come to class.
She is very enthusiastic and makes the class enjoyable and fun!
:)

she was very positive and fun in class.
She is very enthusiastic about the subject and really shows that she wants to teach us.
She's very enthusiastic about the topic of the course. I really like that because it makes the class more interesting. She doesn't just stay in the front of the class all the time, she moves around which helps me pay more attention.
She's amazing at what she does. Highly recommend her. I took this class before, but failed because the instructor I had made everyone in the class uncomfortable, which is why I was kind of nervous coming into this course. Dr. Stewart just made everything easy and fun to learn.
She's very friendly and helpful, but also very clear as to what her expectations are.
always well prepared
Very professional
It really showed how passionate and how much she loved teaching this course. Unlike other lecture halls I have had she shared basic information about herself which makes me feel like she cares more.
She is a very energetic teacher, full of excitement and knowledge of the class subject. She is very considerate of all types fo people who are taking the class for different reasons.
As far as attitude and behavior, Professor Stewart was great. She was always enthusiastic, energetic, knowledgable, and wanting to help her students.
A+
She is very enthusiastic about what she teaches and appears to have a positive vibe about her. Makes class interesting at times and she thoroughly looks as if she loves her job and loves teaching about nutrition.
She was always prepared with a powerpoint, and since she is so comfortable with the material, even when things went wrong (for example the projector didn't work or the video wouldn't play) she was able to improvise and enlighten the students in a different way.
I love Professor. Stewards attitude and behavior towards her students. She is always willing to help and is very friendly.
She is a great instructor that is really passionate about her course which made it fun and easy for me to learn!
She is very outgoing and passionate about what she is teaching. Since she was excited to be in class, I was excited too.
She is very positive and always has an inspiring attitude everyday. She takes her work very seriously, but in a fun way. She relates to the class very well which makes the setting of the classroom more at ease than other classes.
As a professor, she did an excellent job in teaching the nutritional concepts to a room filled with hundreds of students effectively. She is a very energetic person who seems to love her job as a professor.
Very professional, cared about our grades and offered extra credit when the class seemed to be slipping up.
She is very professional and her attitude towards teaching this course is very positive. I feel like she WANTS to teach the course and is very enthusiastic about the material she is teaching. She knows what she is talking about and teaching and is confident in what she is teaching. I appreciate her passion in teaching this course because it makes me want to learn.
Her energy and enthusiasm towards the course material made her lectures very interesting. It fostered a positive learning environment.
super helpful!
She's so passionate about what she's teaching and that makes me and other students passionate about learning. Not a lot of teachers can do that. I also love how she can be fun and focused at the same time
Always in a good mood
Very enthusiastic and made it easy to stay focused during lecture.
Great attitude and behavior.
She was very positive attitude and she knows what she is talking about. I just want to say thank you. I really enjoyed this class.
She makes things easy to understand by relating things in class to other things outside of class. such as telling us stories, showing us videos, etc.
Mrs. Stewart acts professional, while allowing herself to connect with the students on a personal level by sharing stories from her life that apply to the course content.
Mrs. Stewart maintained a very professional attitude and behavior throughout the the semester while also still being related able and very much approachable.
Her attitude was wonderful, she was very enthusiastic and nice. Always had a smile on her face.
Very enthusiastic professor who knows the material she is teaching us.
She is very knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor while teaching this course.
Lectures are well-prepared and interesting. Professor Stewart shows knowledge of the subject and builds interest in the subject through enjoyable lectures.
Dr. Steward is encouraging, thoughtful, and always willing to help.
Very enthusiastic about class and subject
She is very enthusastic and makes lecture exciting.
Very organized.
Very professional and well spoken. Taught effectively and classes flowed very smoothly.
Shes a very good teacher, she keeps the students involved during lectures, walks around to each part of the auditorium. She explains things very clearly and relates them to real life situations.
Instructor Stewart was always eager to teach. She seemed to really enjoy the subject, and teaching it to us. Her excitement is rather contagious and inspired many of us to enjoy nutrition as well. She filled each hour with interesting facts and videos, and made each class enjoyable.
She's a very fun person and knows her material very well.
Really enthusiastic about the content and knows her stuff.
N/A
She's very excited about the material, and very knowledgeable. She's approachable and answers all my questions after class. She's cheerful and passionate during lecture, while having a lot of information.
She does answer questions after class that much. But student could get help more from the TA more than the professor herself. If a student ever have trouble with internet connection during the weekly quiz, TOO BAD there is NO EXCEPTION for her. I understand some students have unrealistic excuses. But it sucks to have something that you have no control over (for instance losing internet connection during quiz) and she doesn't consider student's conditions.
Very energetic and keeps me engaged and entertained.
She's very enthusiastic and helpful
Great professor. Very enthusiastic about what she teaches.
I wish more professors would be more energetic and enthusiastic about their subjects like Mrs. Stewart is. She clearly loves teaching and she's very passionate about nutrition.
very funny
She's very passionate about teaching Food Science and her good attitude makes the class more interesting and desirable to learn.
she was very helpful and wants us to succeed
She is very warm and helpful and uses personal stories in lecture to make the content more digestible.
She's really nice
She is an awesome professor!
Very enthusiastic.
She was funny, passionate about her subject, and very informative. She kept everything very well structured.
really enthusiastic in what she does
This course was not only very informational, but it was taught in a very efficient manner. Information on nutrients and foods are very applicable to everyday life, but it is also very important that the material be taught in such a way that keeps the subject interesting and informational. I believe that Dr. Stewart maintained a balance between the two very well. She was very positive in everything she taught, and was also very certain. You could tell she was very knowledgeable about the topic and was very comfortable teaching in front of a large audience. She's very friendly and shows that she cares about her students learning the materials as well as getting good scores on the exams. I enjoyed her teaching style and attitude.
She is a great teacher. Always has high energy, which makes the class motivated to learn.
So much fun! Maria is so enthusiastic about nutrition and adds anecdotes and stories of her life that make class so interesting and fun.
She is so funny! She makes nutrition fun.
very intelligent, prepared, enthusiastic
Dr. Stewart is always energetic and professional during her lectures. She brings in examples and experiments to simplify difficult concepts.
Happy
Dr. Stewart always addresses students in a professional manner. She is very likable, and I would want her to be my friend! When I addressed her via email, her response was very professional.
Great attitude, very positive and helpful. Always came to class prepared and ready to teach. Some of the concepts were very difficult and she went over them well. Great teacher.
Well done.
She is always enthusiastic and very up beat making class all the more fun.
She is very enthusiastic about teaching no matter what kind of situation the school puts her in (e.g. broken mic). She motivates the class to do well and allows chances to learn in class (such as mini quizzes for credit).
Very professional and enthusiastic about teaching. I can tell that she enjoys teaching us and is passionate about the topic.
very enthusiastic! :)
Awesome!
Professor Stewart is an amazing professor and clearly loves teaching. I enjoyed every class and learned way more than I expected to. Her explanation of all topics were clear and related to everyday situations. She always speaks in a professional manner.
She is upbeat and informational, making class enjoyable.
She is so nice and enthusiastic about nutrition. She definitely made having to take a science course more interesting!
Good job!
She is always enthusiastic at the start of class and is more than happy to be in class ready to teach. She takes the time to always make her way to each table during discussions to see where we were at and give us a little insight.
Always enthusiastic about the lessons - keeps me engaged at all times!
Very energetic to teach about nutrition and easily approachable.
She was very enthusiastic.
Always had a great attitude and behavior during class. No complaints.
Although this class had a non-traditional structure, Professor Stewart did a good job of keeping all students involved and focused (as much as possible). Her movement around the classroom during lectures was helpful in keeping us attentive, and everyone was sure to be able to hear her.
Dr Stewart - an expert and a scientist. A professional. She makes learning fun and teaches the material at an appropriate level of complexity. She explains complex things to us when asked. Classes are very well put together and impeccably organized (e.g. lectures posted to laulima labeled by date). You have NO IDEA how amazing and helpful and how much time this level of organization saves everyone in the class. Other classes are confusing or dont post the lecture before class or name it something weird so you don't know which one matches what it says on the syllabus. None of that here. Very organized. Grading is very fair with mini quizzes and easay homework online which you just have to remember to finish and it can help your grade since the tests are hard. Overall very fair tests and questions and a lot of chances to study etc. A very good class.
She is very professional and well prepared for every class
She was very enthuastic about teaching this course
Dr. Stewart is extremely enthusiastic about her course and her students succeeding in it. She related course materials to real life which allows students to apply the concepts taught in class and help them lead a healthier life. She was always willing to further discuss concepts after class in person or via email. She kept the class well informed about upcoming assignments and what to expect throughout the semester. There were no surprises.
She was very enthusiastic about teaching nutrition, and she was always willing to hear about what students needed help on. She gave us multiple extra credit opportunities and that really helped.
She was always ready and willing to help students with any questions they had about the course. She made sure that if students were unsure about a certain topic, she would take time to explain it more in detail until we got a better grasp on it. Always has a positive attitude and made effort to make class interesting.
Great
I loved how she teaches it just engages us more into her teachings. She's not like other professors because she's able to connect with us on a one on one basis and she helps us when we need it.
She is very bright and motivating as a professor. I think she is more fun as a FSHN professor than Dr. Titchenal, and she knows how to keep you awake in class.
very professional. Knowlegdable on course content and is always helpful in helping student achieve the best score if they can. Gives students ways to learn more and so much infomation to help us.
Maria Stewart is very professional in her attitude and behavior.
She has an awesome attitude and very good humor I really enjoyed her class!!! Wish Manoa had more great teachers like her!!!
She is always positive and upbeat
She is one of the best teachers at the university and I would highly recommend taking her course.
Very happy and enthusiastic!
She was very professional.
Dr. Stewart comes to class every day well prepared and very enthusiastic about the materials we cover in class. She also implemented hands on activities and group work to help support what we cover in that class period.
best explainer ever. captured my attention and learned alot. explained digestion better than my anatomy teacher. professor taught class where it was fun to learn, it wasnt stressful. in my anatomy class, its stressful and too difficult, to the point students give up. and the teacher is not a very good teacher/lecturer/explainer. basically, i wish professor could be the teacher of all my classes. It is really true that the professor makes all the difference in the atmosphere of the class, the students' perspective on studying/material, and our experience.
Dr. Stewart is professional and personable. She is easy to approach and makes nutrition fun and easy to understand. She's an excellent teacher and a likable person.
Dr. Stewart is very knowledgeable about the course content, and is able to explain it very thoroughly, and in an understandable manner to her students. I learned a lot from her lectures; she was able to tie real-life situations to the material that we were covering, and provides positive supplements to the textbook material.
She is always positive and has her lessons planned. She makes hard lessons fun by turning them into game shows. She would do demonstrations that would make us get the picture clear in our head. Every little thing she would do besides lecture would help a lot for the exams.
Dr. Stewart was very enthusiastic about this course and very knowledgeable about the material. She applied real life examples to the material and broke it down to more basic parts when needed.
One of the best professor that I attended. I would highly recommend her to anyone trying to learn more about nutrition or just a great class to take. She is very encouraging about learning all of the material and will go out of her way for you to make it easier to learn.
She has a good attitude and behavior towards students and about the class material.
23. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I believe that the teaching style she currently has is perfectly fine the way it is, she gives you the tools and the help to achieve a good grade in her course.
I have no suggestions. I Thought she taught the class perfectly
-NONE!

make powerpoint slides white. colored backgrounds are hard to read.

Maybe using too much mechanics?

I would not change anything about this course.
She is a great teacher already, doesn't need to improve
I firmly believe that Maria Stewartâ??s teaching style in food science and human nutrition is perfect as it stands. She emphasizes important information, she helps us (students) to look at the big picture and she wants us to succeed. For the course itself, I would like it if there were more review games before tests, especially in the vitamins and minerals chapter. I like being able to flip through those slides and test my current knowledge before a test. I donâ??t like only having one review day, it makes it seem rushed. I feel like having another review day would help to cement the information in studentâ??s brains. Or at the very least, please have 2 review days before the final. Thereâ??s too much information to go over and too little time to review everything. I admit, I would have liked it if we had a little bit more material from the earlier tests that was covered in the final study guide. But only a fraction of the earlier material was covered in the final review session before the final test. In addition, I would like a more specific comprehensive study guide especially for the final exam. There is so much material that was covered throughout the semester, but some of the material is not on the study guide. I realize that the study guide is supposed to be a little bit more streamlined, but it would help if there were more specific study areas and specific questions on the guide so that the final would go a little bit easier.
n/a
Please make sure all powerpoints are updated. My only critique would be to review slides before lectures, so she knows exactly what is on them. Often, she forgets that she had included a fancy transition or illustration to answer or add on supplementary information to slides.
quizzes should be done after the topic's lecture rather than prior. Also some of the questions on the exams and quizzes could have been written more clear and concisely
N/A.
I wouldn't suggest changing anything about her teaching style/ methods.
I always forget about the online quizzes and assignmets because they're non tangible and online.
Nothing, she is an excellent teacher.
Nothing, Professor Stewart is a great teacher.
i think just better preperation for exams
n/a
im not sure if its just me but i find it hard to take in all of the information needed for the test so maybe highlight over the very important things alot more
She is doing a very good job and I enjoy coming to class and seeing her rabbits tips! I also love the Jeopardy days for review!
Stress importance of quizzes and make sure kids know that what's on the quizzes won't be talked about the week before the quiz is due
Make it a little more interesting
honestly cant think of any. gives good study guides from previous semesters, extra credit for coming to class, weekly quizzes and monthly assignments to help keep up the grades and midterms are alright as long as you go to class.
N/A
I cant think of any suggestions.
i did not like that the online quizzes were assigned on topics we had not covered in class yet.
DONT GIVE QUIZZES ON INFORMATION YOU DIDNT TEACH US!! She also sends out study guides and practice exams. I've finished them, check my answers with others, and memorized everything. With that said, you need all of that and to be a great guesser in order to get an A on the exam. When she sends study guides out, the class emails each other and even collectively with all the resources handed to us, we still can't answer some things. What I mean by this is how she words her questions and has multiple answers. FOR INSTANCE, we had an online quiz and the question was "what food category does peanut butter fall into" She told us to use www.supertracker.usda.gov to find the answer. It told me it was both a protein food and an oil. However, we could only choose one answer. I sent her an email about this and no reply. Now what? You just have to be a good guesser.
I suggest to make more jeopardy or interactive study slides for harder content I found those helped me grasp the content better than the study guide was.
The tests are a bit hard and I struggled with them a lot. Her questions are too confusing and do not relate to what we learn in class or in the slides.
n/a
The quizzes were hard to do, even though we could have the book to help us. Reading the textbook did not help much in answering the questions. I think it'd be easier if we gone over the lecture for the quizzes first since it makes the quiz less difficult.
Zero suggestions, Professor Stewart is one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of learning from at this university.
No improvements needed! I LOVED taking her class! My fave this whole semester!
I honestly don't have any suggestions. This was my favorite course this semester and I usually hate science. She is a very good teacher though, that makes the course fun and easy to understand.
Make the weekly online quizzes about things you go over in class before we take them.
I had a hard time remembering to do the online quizzes. maybe a class reminder would help the lecture before its due
Break down the tests a little more. very difficult
cool
Already good
I think everything is fine as is.
I think that online quizzes should be skipped on weeks when there are tests. I tended to forget because I was too focused on preparing for the test.
i like the class exactly how it is now
Give weekly quizzes after the topic is covered in class. I learned much from the classtime lectures and would have earned higher scores if I was quizzed post.
No improvements.
I don't think there are any improvement needed. Some of the lectures on digestion of different nutrients went too quick, and were harder to understand at times.
more extra credit points
more cool food experiments
I do not have any suggestions for Dr. Stewart at the moment.
I am in section 002 (mass lecture) and enjoyed it. However, I have been to the more interactive class (in the morning) and like it A LOT more. I was able to connect with the material better and liked the accompanying in-class activities. It was more intimite and helped me understand the material better.
Nothing really
Do not have quizzes when we have not gone over the information. It would be more effective to go over the topic then have a quiz. I'd even prefer if the quizzes were harder because we knew the information before hand
explain how to do the equations for kcals and body weight a little more clearer
N/A
She gave a lot of help, but it was discouraging when I would study so much material and still get a B when I tried for an A. But thankfully, she gives extra credit!
none!
Honestly I wouldn't change one single thing.
None, I like it the way it is.
Too many things to remember! Tests are difficult at times because there's so much to remember. But other than that, lectures are great and interesting.
I know that there is gradebook on laulima, but an alert telling what your grade is once a month would be awesome and an alert for those online quizzes every week..
smaller lecture classes
None
I believe if we went over what the quizzes were going to be about in class, it would benefit everyone.
I think Dr. Stewart is doing great! It is easy to learn from her and is enjoyable.
Making the study guides and practice exams for applicable to the exams given in class
n.a
None.
Weekly quizzes are deadly.
Talk more about drugs affecting the body.
She's doing great!
Send study guides early so students can fill it out along the way.. less stress for them in the end. Talk slower because sometimes cant keep up while taking notes. No time limit for weekly quizzes if due before going over it in class. But if taken after, then 15 minutes time limit is fine.
N/A. An additional note to the class would be to do their own scientific research regarding some of the controversial discrepancies of FDA, EPA, and USDA regulations.
Make the exams easier so that students do not stress about the class so much as unexpected!
Only that some of the weekly quiz questions were obscure. I always read the material and power points before taking the quiz and sometime still couldn't find a correct answer. It's great she gives these weekly quizzes though because it would be easy to fall behind with the reading if not. Very smart on her part.
Very engaging!
i think that the quiz's we need to do worth 5 pts we should get at least one pt for trying because it lowers our grade one percent every 5 pts and they accumulate really quickly. the extra credit quiz's maybe make it worth more than one pt because getting all 4 q's right is a little challenging.
Sometimes she goes a little fast through her lectures, but luckily the slides are on Laulima so I can write everything down later if I miss something, but sometimes it makes it difficult to keep up because we didn't fully comprehend a previous concept before moving on to another one.
Lecture is somewhat boring.
Nothing, I learned pretty good from what she taught in lecture.
I think that Maria already has a great teaching style and methods - it's definitely due to her high knowledge and passion towards the subjects. She made discussing diarrhea and the various causes really interesting to learn! That, I could imagine, would be difficult if I were to try and do it.
Get rid of all the online hw.
More clarification/study exam help
A couple more reminders about the online quizes :)
This is already a really good course and Maria is an exceptional professor but if I were to be picky an index of important diagrams (the ones covered in class) would have been useful to have to study for tests it can be tedious to look up where they all were in the powerpoints. But again Maria often went over diagrams before tests so really this is a minor detail.
more detailed study guides
none, she did a great job
In order to improve the course, she could spend a little bit more time on review instead of going over a lecture and saving ten-fifteen minutes for review.
I felt the course was very effective as is. Her teaching style was engaging and the lectures being available online made it much easier to pay attention to her explanations of the contents rather than focusing on jotting down all of the information on the slides during class time.
None.
The grading system is a joke. If a quiz on laulima is not taken or not scored well, at least 2% goes down on the grade. The extra point quizzes should be extra points. All that for one point? If it can at atleast build up/earn as extra points for the final or midterms. I feel like the quizzes on laulima weren't as helpful as the games or slides or lecture quizzes we do all together. I know the point is to "know the material "before hand" but all people have to do is look online. I'd rather not gain points than lose a great grade for those quizzes taken each sunday
nothing i can think of
The course was great the teaching style was great.
All good:)
I thought everything was helpful especially making the powerpoints for vitamins and minerals
Although the course to challenging she still helps every student pass and learn more about food science.
No suggestions
make tests less wordy and easier to study for
None, nothing needs to be improved.
None.
Honestly I liked this coarse a lot. Visual aides are used, she is passionate about what she teaches, videos are shown on occasion, and study guides were always provided.
none, i think that she is doing a pretty good job.
maybe save the writings/notes that she does on her lecture powerpoints, unless that's just for those who attend class.
more extra credit!
Improving course: Not all saturated fat is unhealthy, we need fat to loose fat. I base my diet on low carb and high fat and more traditional nutrition, and were saturated fat is a very important food source. Solid fats like unpasteurized milk, butter, cream and yoghurt, coconut oil, liver, wild fish, etc is super healthy. Scary that young adults are taught to eat low-fat foods and vegetable oils. Americans should really not eat 45-65 % carbohydrates but more healthy saturated fat. If you go online you can read several scientific reports about saturated fat and unpasteurized dairy and how they are good for you. This should be included in our textbook!
Keep doing what she is doing!

I honestly can't find anything to change.
Keep it up! Fine as is.
easier reviews
Awesome the way it is.
Assigning the quizes AFTER she does the lecture on it because her lecture slides do NOT cover everything she asks on the quizes.
Maybe have more assignments or have the quizzes worth more points. But other than that, I like the way the course was taught.
Nothing. She covers everything and answers all questions when asked.
I don't have any suggestions. I think she has done a great job.
Everything was up to par
She does move rather fast and slowing down on more compicated issues would help. Also maybe review certain material in class more.
Possibly going through lectures a bit slower for the students who are actually taking notes, it was difficult for me to keep up at times.
I've thought about this a lot throughout the semester, and I think the best way to improve the class is to have maybe more exams but on less material. I say this because I felt like each exam focused on too many topics, making it difficult to study all of the material needed. Maybe if they condensed exams to like one or two concentrated chapters, and had maybe one or two more exams in order to make up for less being covered in each exam, it'd be easier for students to get more than a C. Just a suggestion, though. It may be just me who thinks this. Also, idk why we had to take the quiz on laulima on a chapter that we didn't even learn about yet. The quizes could've been treated as like review instead of a checkpoint to see if we were reading. A review would've been more helpful.
very good teaching style, very good energy, power points and lectures are good
Some of the examples she uses aren't too helpful, and aren't as easy to understand. I wish she could get a stylus pen or something instead of her finger to write on the iPad, since her writing can be illegible at times. Using easy to remember mnemonics would be helpful, such her example of Vitamins A, D, E and K (using ADEK as an acronym).
Move chapter quizes to after we discuss the material as a class.
The class is great and very informative. Nothing has to be changed.

The slides are really lengthy and each slide seems to have something important. This makes it really hard to hand write the notes because she goes kind of fast. I would suggest going over the topic before taking the quizzes. The quizzes are hard.
I believe that the course content is fairly reasonable and fair. It isn't that difficult if you actually study. You get what you deserve.
No sugggestions, but I will say that I like that she walks around the lecture hall during her lectures. There's something about that that makes class a lot more inviting. It's refreshing, because usually I'll see a teacher just lecturing from the front of the room.
Her teaching style suits me well, although on some of the more challenging chapters like vitamins and minerals I feel that those chapters need to be covered more.

N/A. It was great!
Please make grading less harsh. It seems like the points for quiz seem to count for a lot of points. If the little extra credit points done in class can be worth a little more or at least half point that will help a lot. I do pretty well on the test but my grade isn't that great.
I think the quizzes should be on the material we are talking about instead of something we have not learned yet
Slow a bit down on slides that have a lot of info on them. I know the slides are on laulima but some students are able to retain information when it is written themselves.
I thought it was a little ridiculous to have three midterms each of which were pretty difficult and then on top of that to have a cumulative final, I felt that due to this system the class became more about just memorizing facts and figures instead of actually learning about the material and how to apply it to areas in my own life. Because of this system I also just memorized what I needed to know the day before the test and then shortly after forgot most of the information.
It may be nice to include information for the students to find professional help with either eating disorders or overweight issues locally.
I feel she is already doing a good job in teaching this course.
I believe some of the questions on the weekly quizzes were a little difficult to find from the slides and the textbook, especially if a student has the e-text like i did, didn't have page numbers or specific chapters like she stated in class so it was more difficult to use that as a resource.
Good teachings scores. I hope next semester she can create her own exams.
Honestly, there could possibly no improvements because she does such a wonderful job getting the lessons and teaching through! She provides basic lecture slides, animations, videos, and even fun games like jeopardy!

Great teacher.
No improvement is needed.

No suggestions, great Professor!!
There were a few experiment-style presentations that were really fun and interesting. There should be more of those hands-on type things. And the Quizzes being due on sunday night was difficult to remember. I think it would be much better if they were due on a class day, so that we won't forget it too easily.
Memorization for things for this class is difficult. If possible, make learning these things more fun by associating things with daily life, or using memorization techniques to assist students.
use more models, pictures, animation, examples for the more complicated things. Like how things get absorbed into the blood.

Learning about the material for the quizzes prior to taking them.
you had a lot of 'experiments' in the beginning of the semester but it died down after, i find them to be helpful so that i can better understand the material
Lab sections to go along with the lectures would help me understand more complex material.

More possible extra credit.
I thought everything she did was well organized and good.

The class is fine the way it is. I attended every class and looked forward to every class.

She is awesome.
I think you should teach the lecture before you have us take the quizzes

I think Dr. Stewart's class was amazing!! She made the subject super easy to understand. Just showing up to class, in my opinion, was a good way to guarantee a good grade for yourself. For me, the demonstrations were extremely helpful in understanding more difficult topics. I am a kinesthetic learner, so this helped for concepts to click in my head.
The class was a little harder than I expected for a 100-level class...thought that some of the material didn't really need to be covered and the tests were extremely hard. Too hard in my opinion especially for a lecture hall where there are so many people in the class and it's more challenging to ask questions and learn the material very well.
Outside class activities? Can do. Not impossible.
I felt that she did an awesome job this semester! Knowing that the class set up was a little new o her.
To be honest I thought she did an excellent job. The only difficulty for me was the online quizzes for homework but that's my responsibility.
Not that I can think of.... You're perfect ;)
i like the prep for the test its helpful to practice
Keep it in a smaller classroom! NO AUDITORIUMS!
the test questions are tricky make it straight up. Maybe thats why people do so bad in this class.
The course could be improved by adding more demonstrations but overall the class is very entertaining and rewarding.
Prof. Stewart herself had effective methods for teaching our class. However, the room we had sometimes had things that didn't work so she had to improvise at times. Those things should not be happening quite as often as they did. So, my problem is with maintenance, not Prof. Stewart.
Maybe have a little more time for exam reviews.
More extra credit PLEASE!

Online weekly quizzes should correspond with what the week's topic is about.
I don't think there should be any improvements to teaching style or methods.
More demonstrations would help us remember the concepts better, I think. Also, more student presentations could make the concepts come to life for us, and keep us on track (it never hurts to have more points available, too!).
Maybe UH could fix the microphone in a timely manner when it breaks or they could make a touch-screen with a pen which actually draws on the screen where you place the tip and not 1.5" up and to the right.
It was difficult for me to grasp the scientific breakdowns of food because I took this class as an elective, and many students in class are a nutrition or health major. I didn't understand the chemical breakdowns or have the base knowledge of vitamins and nutrients that the rest of the class seemed to have, or that Professor Stew assumed we had.
Maybe another room. It was really hot in there.
This usually doesn't happen, but I've got nothing. I really enjoyed everything about this course and Dr. Stewart's teaching styles.
Maybe simplify the tests, there was a lot of difficult confusing questions that could have gone either way. I feel like she could also slow down sometimes, especially since there is a lot of material that needed to be covered.
The class I took was the first class she had that wasn't "lecture style". We had access to technologies that were very helpful and useful in the class, as well as groups that were highly effective! I think it's a better way to get a grasp on hard materials when there are resources available for extra help.
None
I think more videos would be great so that we understand each concept more. I found the videos to give me a better insight about nutrition and our health. The things I've learned is unbelievable and alot to take in but very very interesting.
Have better technology in Webster 101. It prevented her to write out some points on the powerpoints.
Love this class
She is awesome and has a great teaching style so great i actually understood things better when she expalined it.
She has an awesome way of teaching. I enjoyed the videos and her personal stories she told in class, it made the material easier to understand.
None.
I think that the test in this class were too confusing. I studied for all my test and knew the material pretty well and when I got to take the test, the questions were not straight forward, it felt like she was trying to trick us and it just made everything so confusing. The quizzes were also on the chapter that was for the next week, I think we should be doing a quiz after we have learned the chapter throughly. The points back exam opportunity was very iffy too because she did not let us know which answers we got wrong on the test so we could correct it and then if we got made a mistake, she minuses points from our test.
n/a - keep it the way it is!
loved this personal, interactive class. better than straight lecture. helped me learn better.
We can spend less time on worksheets, but spend more time on working with the board with diagramming. The movies are helpful.
None, I am more than satisfied with the way Professor Stewart ran her class.
Should apply more group work
I would suggest looking over the questions on the test with a students perspective. During past tests the way questions have been worded is very confusing and often leads to getting the question wrong when I know the material.
24. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
she is an amazing professor and provides her students with more than enough material to be successful students in her course.
smart, approachable, and passionate about the subject she teaches.
she is a great teacher. She definitely knows her stuff.
She is one awesome teacher!!! KEEP HER!!
AWESOME
alright.
probably the best nutrition teacher I will ever encounter.
She was really good.
overall 9
Great teacher :)
good i think
EXCELLENT!
Very through in everything that is covered. She breaks topics down so it is easy for students to understand and comprehend. Her knowledge in nutrition is helpful to all students so when she lectures you can tell how she feels everything is important for us to know. Over all a great teacher for nutrition.
She is a good teacher already, she had study guides, explained things well, she put things online that we needed, she went at a good speed, she also stressed points that were extra important, and she also encourages student participation with colored cards. A+ teaching one of the best at the university. She is very enthusiastic also
A very well rounded teacher that can demonstrate material easily and precisely.
As a teacher, I really like her. She makes the material easy to understand, and itâ??s very easy to learn from her because sheâ??s so passionate and that makes the class interesting. She makes the class relevant to us (students), and I love the fact that she uses videos to show us the real life practical applications that nutritional skills and concepts can be applied. I also like the fact that she writes on her slides what is important and emphasizes them. She also illustrates different concepts, to help us (students) understand the information. She wants every single student to succeed, and sheâ??s always open for questions. I only wish that her office wasnâ??t that far because I wouldnâ??t mind going there to study for tests. In addition, she also is willing to help students that are struggling with either an assignment, a grade, or a test question. She gives very clear direction (for the most part), and is a great teacher.
Excellent. Posting slides online, as well as having lots of helpful tools for exams, is something I loved about her teaching style.
She was a great person to learn nutrition from. She made her class relatable, fun, and easy to score a good grade in.
a great instructor
that she is a great teacher!
Professor Stewart is a well organized and very professional teacher. She was able to clearly explain every topic she had planned for the day and she was able to effectively answer any questions that may have come up. She was also very enthusiastic about everything she taught to us which made the class very interesting. She is a great teacher and I would recommend her to anyone thinking about taking this course.
Satisfied
GREAT! The class is tough but she does a great job trying to make sure each of her students are prepared for exams. Very helpful teacher.
Awesome professor!

SHE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR, and everyone should take her class for fun because you will learn things about yourself and things about the course one wouldn't think of.
She is a great professor and her upbeat and fun personality makes the class easier to be in
overall good teacher, no complaints. Not the absolute best professor, but definitely better than the majority.
She's great!
AWESOME!!!! Would definitely take another class from here again. Fabulous teaching style.
I thought this was a really great course, well explained especially with some of the more complicated subjects. Dr. Stewart also made it a lot of fun. I never dreaded coming to class because she always made it fun and interesting.
she was enthusastic about nutrition and I think I learned a lot in that class.
She's awesome.
chill
I don't know how she got hired as a professor here, one of the least helpful people ever. She comes off as nice and makes corny jokes here and there and the class likes her for that. But this class is constructed where people start cheaing on exams jus to pas. They stopped worrying about memorizing things because it's useless. She made the class where grades are much more important than learning because she's bringing GPA's down when it's just an elective. People stopped caring about learning. When I started losing enthusiasm in the professor, I also stopped liking nutrition as a subject. I wish she didn't do that because I took it to help learn about what to eat and how everything in food works. Now Im just trying to hang onto passing these poorly structured tests.
She is an awesome teacher and I hope to take another one of her classes. She is energetic and enthusiastic about the material and always willing to answer any questions. Her various examples and visuals were interesting and made material easier to grasp. I would highly suggest others to take her class as well.
She is a great professor.
Great teacher
I think the professor was really great and I would recommend others to take her course.
A+++
She is truly an awesome teacher! She makes every class exciting and fun. There's always some laughter in every class.
great teacher! I've learned so much.
She's lively and fun teacher!
I loved this class, I am not a nutrition major, but I love science and nutrition. I learned a lot about some of the habits that I have and am currently trying to make and break.
good teacher and enthusiastic
cool
Very good
Spectacular professor. Very pleased with the instruction and the content.
fantastic. I felt that Maria really cares about helping us learn. She tries her best to make it as easy as possible to pass the class, while pushing us to actually learn something. Her power points are easy to read and understand. There are also a lot of study materials provided to help us prepare for tests.
Shes a great person and a great professor. she made learning fun and yet really challenging.
Great! I would highly recommend taking Dr. Stewart's FSHN 185 to any student, namely an undecided first or second-year student.
She's a great professor and I enjoyed learning from her.
Wonderful! This class was very enjoyable and I will be furthering my education in nutrition because of Dr. Stewart.
awesome
10/10
My overall evaluation of Dr. Stewart is a great one. She is a wonderful teacher and she got me to enjoy the class so much that as a freshman I am looking to major in this subject.
I really like Dr. Stewart as a teacher and she seems great as a person as well. She's professional and passionate about the subject which has a huge impact on student performance, in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
Great teacher
she a good teacher and knows what she is teaching.
always willing to help her students, very enthusiastic, gives great examples of what we're learning
excellent. Professor Stewart has to be one of the best teachers I have ever had at UH. She isn't dull and boring like the other teachers at UH. From her lectures, you can really see her love for nutrition.
Great teacher, probably one of my most enjoyable classes this semester. I actually learned stuff that I can use in real life!
She was a great teacher. Very helpful and informative!
A really good/knowledgeable teacher who knows how to keep her students engaged. Gave real life examples to make material easier to understand. I liked that she was enthusiastic about the subject because it made going to class fun instead of boring, which is usually the case when it comes to lecture type courses. Really enjoyed learning from Dr. Stewart.
She's awesome :)
Amazing, she breaks everything down to cater to not only science students but all other majors.
She did a great job teaching a difficult topic
that she is a very good professor.
that she is a great professor. I get frustrated with the many things I have to remember and study but she was always helpful no matter what. She's great :)
An amazing professor. Keep her!
Definitely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about nutrition. Wants to make the class enjoyable and finds ways to make it more interesting.

Very good professor
Great teacher and makes a large classroom environment seem small. Really enjoyed this class.
Excellent.
A great teacher who is knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about the subject.
She's great.
She is a good teacher. I like how we have all our material for the class available right away. For the most part, no complaints. She's awesome.
I love her. I would definitely take a class from her again.
Overall, pretty good! :)
Excellent instructor! She is able to communicate the dynamics of the class and simplify nutritional mechanics that would otherwise have to be explained in a biochemical manner.
A++
Great professor
Professional, very organized and impressive in the way she handles such large classes. One of the best professors I've had.
Awesome :)
I really enjoyed going to class and I feel like I learned a lot.
very good. everyone has small things they need to improve on.
she is an excellent instructor as she knows her stuff and assesses appropriately through exams. She is goes above and beyond to help students who are having trouble by offering a lot of extra credit opportunity and a lot of availability for office hours with herself or with her TAs.
She is a very knowledgable and personable teacher. She made me enjoy going to class and eager to do well.

I think she is a very great professor. She is very knowledgable and enthusiastic and made coming to class fun.
SUPERB. She's entertaining, she makes it interesting with a lot of personal stories, she is professional, she's kind and understanding, she listens to her students, she's a hard worker, organized, easy to understand. Overall she's everything a professor needs to be.
She was a very great teacher and I hope to have her again in the future. She made the class fun and exciting while teaching us at the same time.
great
Awesome teacher, would take another class with her if I had the opportunity
that she is a great professor and can communicate efficiently to her students.

She's a great professor!

Pinakamagaling titser (Really good professor)
The most energetic professor I have ever had.
She was the best teacher I have had yet! She is very professional, knowledgable, and really enjoys teaching others!
Very good because she was always on time, prepared, knew the topics very well and kept students engaged because of demos, jeporday games, etc.
Overall, Maria Stewart is a great instructor.
She's a really good professor, she knows basically everything about food science and nutrition, and she teaches very clear and precise.
she's really enerjetic and loves teaching and what she does
Very good professor
My favorite teacher!
I really value her as a professor.
She seems really nice and her course is a little challenging but nothing you cant do if you put some effort into it.
Very good teacher
great prefessor
good teacher
I liked Dr. Stewart. She's quirky in a good way. She's very easy to talk to and answers questions readily. It's hard to come by teachers who enjoy teaching, and I think Dr. Stewart is one of those professors who generally enjoy teaching.
Very good teacher, wish I could have her in all of my classes.
Awesome teacher, very helpful
She should keep doing exactly what she is doing!
She is a wonderful instructor and an asset to this school. I would enjoy taking another class with her.
I adored her and her teaching style. I learned more in this class than any of my other classes this semester, perhaps even all year.
She is a very good, effective teacher and should definitely be hired to "officially" work here.
I would take another class from this professor. Learning is guaranteed.
Great :)
Very good professor.
one of the better teachers at UH!
She is a great teacher that gives many opportunities for everyone to succeed.
She's a great teacher. Her enthusiasm about this topic makes the class so much more better to be in. She motivates me to learn about the topics in class and not just show up to class just to be there.
AWESOME!
She's pretty awesome.
very good teacher
I loved having her as a professor. She loves what she does and it shows. The best lecture teach I have had so far.
Great teacher! definitely would take another course from her if needed in the future.
She's great! Keep on keepin on gurl.
good teacher, informative class
Not a bad instructor. I liked her, although I struggle at times, especially with exams. Love that she offers a "points back" opportunity, as I have always been a terrible test taker. Enthusiastic teacher, material is mostly relevant, and she definitely brought up points I will remember in the future and will continue to use in my every-day life.
Excellent! She knows the material very well, she is positive and interactive with the students.
Awesome. She is an amazing teacher.
She is very knowledgable about nutrition!
She is a great teacher! Keep up the good teaching! :)
I'm satisfied with her teaching style and course. I would recommend her to someone.
Awesome teacher!
She is a great instructor and has taught me so much throughout this semester!
A great professor
she is super helpful and she makes me want to learn about human nutritiona :)
She's my favorite teacher this semester and should keep teaching the way she's teaching.
she is a very good teacher
Excellent professor! The way she actually performed some experiments in class to help us better understand the concepts.
She is a great teacher. knows what she is teaching. High expectation
Very good. I really liked this class and her teaching style.
Very good teachers. much better than the other fshn 185 teacher.
Mrs. Stewart continues to keep me engaged during lectures, and I look forward to attending this class.
She is very friendly, fun, relate able to the students and also vet approachable. Meaning I don't feel intimidated to ask her a question personally in person or over an e-mail.
She is a wonderful teacher, whether this class was an elective or for a requirement I believe everyone learned a lot.
I would highly recommend her to other students who need to take FSHN 185. She makes learning nutrition fun.
a good instructor
I never had a college professor be so enthusiastic and energized to go through all the trouble to just make learning fun and exciting! I wish she taught all my classes!
interesting teacher to learn from
Very good.
I love the pace that she goes at. It's fast enough where I am not idly waiting for the next slide nor am I rushing to take notes. I enjoy listening to her lectures and hearing the applications of the information in addition to watching the applicable videos.
She was a great teacher that knew the material of the course.
Very good professor
POSITIVE
Great Professor, straightforward, gives a lot of extra credit opportunity.
Instructor Stewart is one of my favorite teachers so far. She is knowledgeable and interested about nutrition, and makes it fun to learn. Her class was challenging and packed with information, but Stewart made it easy to learn, and provided many resources to use. She was clear and thorough in all her lectures, and was easy to follow and understand. She is friendly and is available and easy to talk to before or after class.
She knows her material very well. I enjoyed her class
great professor and very encouraging of her students. Very helpful and wishes the best for everyone.
AWESOME.
She's an excellent teacher, gives us plenty of extra credit opportunities when we need it, and she really knows her stuff. She teaches the material well, and is available to be asked questions if we need to. The material is pretty hard, but she teaches it well.
She's a great instructor and I learned about nutrition this semester.

Good teacher. Very informative.
She should definetly teach more courses because her teaching style is easy to follow and you always learn something new
Very Knowledgable and enthusiastic.
Awesome professor.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!
Wonderful. I wouldn't have preferred another professor teaching this course to me. She really knows what she's talking about and also gives examples of situations (including her own) that really help to authenticate what she is teaching. She is passionate about teaching this course, and it shows in her lectures, teaching methods, and attitude. She stresses the important points, which is nice because there isn't enough time in the world to study every single detail.
Excellent teacher, knows her stuff, would definitely recommend her as a professor to any student.
She is a very good teacher: knowledgeable and fun.
excellent!
Great teacher who really is interested in what she is teaching
She is an amazing professor, willing to go well out of her way to help students do the best that they can in her class and to make sure they understand all the class material.
GOOD
She is amazing!! She is enthusiastic, funny, articulate, easy to approach, passionate about her field, and on and on. I would take another class from her.
Great, positive, cool teacher - only critique is that she may be a little too enthusiastic about the subject esp. since most freshman take it as a general education course and nothing more
Excellent teacher.
She is an awesome teacher and really knows her stuff! I could really tell she truly has a passion for food science and human nutrition.
She's great! Awesome teacher; I would definitely take a class from her again (even if it's the same class).
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD SO FAR IN COLLEGE. You are awesome! I really really enjoyed your class. You make difficult and boring topic super easy to understand and fun! I am DEFINITELY recommending you to my friends. For the first time in my college career, I feel like I truly learned something from a class. Thank you for a great semester!
a teacher that cares how well her students are doing in class as well as learning
Awesome!
Professor Stewart made me enjoy nutrition while providing me with so much helpful advice in leading a healthier lifestyle. She is one of the few teachers/professors who have a natural ability to engage students in the subject.
She is truly inspiring and very interested in her subject. It's refreshing to see a professor who still cares about the students and her own work as well.
She's a good professor. She made me understand nutrition.
Professor Stewart is one of the best teachers I have had in my entire college career and would not mind taking another class that she instructs. She shows students that she loves what she does and that helps students find interest in food science and human nutrition.
One of the most effective teachers I had. Teaches really well!
She's a great instructor and made this course very interesting.
Great teacher. I would recommend this class to anyone that would like to learn the basics of nutrition.
Awesome teacher!
Best teacher in CTAHR. Hands down.
She is a great professor. I really enjoyed her class. She was very open to questions, feedback, and brought us lots of snacks! You never go wrong by feeding college students.
I'm a student retaking this class and I can honestly say I learned so much more this time than the first. She's a great teacher. GOOD JOB!
Excellent.
I really enjoyed her class and even though it was difficult and time consuming I feel like I learned from it and she was very well organized professor.
that she is an excellent professor, and very knowledgeable!
Great
She's done a really great job and I hope she continues to teach because this school really needs professors like her who is willing to enjoy what she's doing while helping us at the same time.
10/10! She is very kind and passionate about her career. Her teaching methods make learning fun and easier to retain memory throughout numerous chapters.
She is a great teacher and I would recommend her class to other students. They will learn a lot and also enjoy this class.
Awesome wish Manoa had moe great teachers like her!!!
She is a great teacher who is enthusiastic about her subject and has fun, interactive teaching methods
Great teacher teaches for all different learning styles!
She is a very great teacher and has inspired me to apply what I have learned outside of the classroom.
One of the best professors I've had so far.
Dr. Stewart is a great teacher and really does a great job making nutrition more accessible and understandable. The interactivity is a great way to make learning better.
She is great!
She is the perfect FSHN professor.
She is a very good teacher, having a good knowledge of the course and its content. She is still young enough to be able to associate with the students and the diets that come with being a college student.
She has done a wonderful job and would recommend this course to everyone to take

How she does exam corrections because I learned a lot more going back over my test and finding which ones i got wrong, and got to improve my scores
entertaining class on a semi-boring topic. good use of assignments, quizzes, extra credit etc to make up for people who do poorly on exams.
Learning new things about how nutrition will always need to be taken care of in life and it needs to be altered at different points in life.
teaching style and how she kept the class engaged and interested.
I really liked how much fun Dr. Stewart had teaching the class. You can tell she really enjoys it. She always would try and bring in a little humor as well and I always like it when a teacher does that. She also tells stories of herself and her family which makes it more personal. It makes me feel a sort of connection with the teacher and for me it makes learning more fun.
i liked becoming more informed about what foods you should put in your body and what your body needs to function.
Powerpoints were on laulima, and also extra credit!
food
Extra Credit opportunities, even if it's almost equivalent to nothing.
I really liked the videos, experiments, and examples she used.
I like the slides and her style of teaching.
demonstrations, opportunities for extra credit
I enjoyed the videos that helped to reinforce the topics we were learning.
It was interesting to take these things that have been and always will be a vital part to our lives and actually learn what they do, how they work, and how they affect us.
I liked that Professor Stewart would use experiments to demonstrate certain things she was teaching us.
I really liked assignment #2 where we had to look at our own diets and use all of the equations and stuff we learned. It was very helpful because it really brought to light the areas in my diet that need help as well as give all of those numbers an equations we learned in class some meaning.
The lectures were always fun.
I loved the lectures when we would hold the paper and played games like jeopardy.
lecture
all
The lectures were interesting
Sports nutrition.
I liked the live demonstrations and helpful tips on remembering terms. These helped me have a reference or picture in my mind when studying. I also liked her teaching style. It was easy to learn when she wasn't just reading word for word off the slides. Maria would elaborate on a key concept listed on the power point during the lecture, but one could also understand what was being portrayed by just reading the words on the slide.
in general i liked the lecture. its always so interesting
She kept information relevant to an average human's life, and connected well to the college young-adult audience.
The class setup is very organized.
Being able to apply what I learned to my life. Very useful.
the protein part
learning about the different nutrients of food
I liked the powerpoints she created for each lecture. It went along with the lectures and textbook well.
classroom demonstrations and videos nutrient density where to find nutrients in foods weight management
The knowledge I learned from it
The vitamins and minerals part was interesting
mini quizes for extra credit
The demonstrations in class and the mini quizzes
Stewart was not boring! An hour and 15 minutes of a lecture is a lot for a student to have to sit down and listen to someone talk about stuff. But she's funny but still professional and has a good flow. It is easy to learn in this class. And I absolutely loved that she would get our grades back to us right away. In a class where you actually put in a lot of hours for studying, you don't want to have to wait weeks before knowing what your grade is.
health
I really liked the fact that Dr. Stewart, always had various resources available for students to use before each exam. The study tools she provided for us were very helpful and insightful.
She is always happy to be there and has jokes and examples on almost every topic. THe tests are challenging but she allows you to fix what you got wrong for partial credit. Also many other grades go into this class so your grade doesn't rely only on test results. This class has probably been the best class I have taken at UH and it's all because of this excellent professor and class structure.
Watching videos of real life examples what we learn in class.
The weekly quiz that boosts my grade.
learning what was bad in ingredients of food we ate. Improving nutrtion and becoming healthier
Learning about the different deficiencies.
learning a little bit about everything
I liked the things I could relate to best, like diets. I know I eat unhealthy and I learned how to balance all of it. Or even reading nutritional labels
I can apply what I learned to my every day life.
I really liked learning about vitamins and minerals.
The practical application. Being able to see what we learned in the real world (i.e. at the grocery store)
The material was very interesting and with Stewart teaching it was very enjoyable
Learning.
OVerall, i loved this course and honestly did not dislike anything, there was nothing to complain about.
The extra credit
How nutrition particularly pertained to me.
The illustrations that she would use.
Extra credit quizzes, study guide, practice exam was given, lecture slides available online, class demonstrations and videos
Knowledge of Exact nutrient requirements
Dr. Stewart's cute drawings, they definitely paint a picture for my brain to comprehend.
Hard class but clearly know how to study!
The visual presentations
i like that we studying why foods are important and what consuming too much is bad for your health
I liked the exams. I am usually a horrible test taker let alone it being an entire multiple choice exam but the exams were doable. I think there were enough easy to medium to difficult questions evenly distributed amongst the topics. The study guides were very very very helpful in focusing in on key concepts.
I liked how interactive it was. I liked that there were online assignments and you would get your results right after you do the homework. I like how much Dr. Stewart uses Laulima because it helps me see if I need to work harder or if I am doing a good job with what I have been doing.
Food
I liked relating the material to myself and everyday life. It's interesting to think about how everything connects with each other based on foods.
the practical knowledge learnt
The break down of topics
I liked the way in which we learned. It was very thorough and put into a real world sense which I liked.
Sports nutrition, pregnancy, online videos.
All aspects.
everything she went over (power points, exams, study guides) were found online as well
the section on how cabs and proteins are used and absorbed in the body
I liked the BMI aspects of the course the best. During this section, we had to apply all of the nutrition facts to our own lives and this is what made me learn the most about my body and my diet.
Professor Stewart's in-class demonstrations.
When she had us participate in class as a whole.
Class Quizzes.
The information that was given was the information we were tested on. Muy bueno
I really liked the demonstrations and games that we did.
I liked all the help we were given, so we could succeed! For example the practice exams and extra credit!
I enjoyed learning about vitamins and minerals were the most interesting topic because I felt I learned a lot more about those topics than the rest
Learning about something I can actually use in real life to live a longer better life.
lots of extra credit and points back opportunites
Sports nutrition
Everything was interesting to me, but I especially liked learning about pregnancy.
I liked the diet aspect of the course because I can relate and apply it to my life more so than the other topics. However with that being said, I felt that if I hadn't learned about the other aspects (minerals, vitamins, etc) I wouldn't be as well informed.
I liked the food choice aspect of the course.
how we can check our grades and missing assignments on laulima unlike most other classes and the in-class extra credits along with the points back on the exams
class videos
I found that the lectures were the best part of the course because they were helpful. Also, I think the weekly quizzes and extra credit opportunities were great.
Sports nutrition, vitamins and minerals, food safety and pregnancy
I liked learning about how to maintain your weight
class lectures
The information I learned
How much I learned.
The assigments
I liked lecture. Her lectures I actually enjoyed engaging my mind in and that is a very new feeling. I also liked doing the activities and assignments, they weren't too overbearing and they were presented to us in a logical understanding to apply the concepts we were or are learning at the moment.
The actual learning and that we are able to incorporate what we learn into our daily lives from now on.
carbs
- organized - tells us what to expect on the exam - exams are straightforward - shows us interesting videos - clear loud voice
the videos
The availability of the lecture slides were very helpful.
I enjoyed the assignments in the class because it made me look more into the topics and helped me get some "hands on" experience with the topics.
Extra credit, reviews
The practicality of it.
lots of extra credit opportunities! incentive to go to class
everything
I liked how well and easy it applies to life. It actually helps many students realize what we are putting into our bodies.
Her stories and examples, and the "ask Hank" powerpoints!
Erm ... she showed us this really cool video about people who live really long due to their lifestyles. That was really cool. And the video about the calories and the guy who measured how much calories there actually was in something compared to how much was on the label.
Interesting facts
The fact that she offers "open note, open book, open neighbor" tasks can be extremely helpful. Also, her offering the "points back" opportunity is awesome, as she probably knows some people (like myself) struggle with this class. Personally, as someone who is awful at anything math and science related, this is extremely helpful and helps raise my grade just a little bit more.
Learning about the different nutrient needs at each stage of life.
Learning about sports nutrition.
I enjoyed the videos and demonstrations during class.
I liked the extra credit questions we had during the classes. I also liked the videos. Listening to lectures all the time get tiring, so watching a video once in a while gives the class some diversity.
I like that there are quizzes to prepare you for the next class lecture. In addition, she provides extra credit mini quizzes. I appreciate her giving the exam points back!
She gives study guides, provides the powerpoint lectures, and pretty much gives the students all the resources they would need to review and prep for exams.
I liked the demonstrations she would do. I am a visual learner, therefore those visual demonstrations helped out a lot. I also like that she teaches in a way that you can understand and comprehend what she is talking about quickly.
The break down of macronutrients and their functions. I feel thy portion of the course provided the most applicable information.
the assignments.
I really like the visual demonstrations.
the review sections
Her experiments.
I like everything.
Overally i liked all the materials we learned about
Seeing you actually do demonstrations, you did it in the first part of the class which I found to be really cool and to be an engaging way for me to learn the material but towards the end it just became powerpoints and you just lecturing which for an hour and fifteen minute class I found it hard to sit through some times.
I really liked the fact that the content learned in this class is applicable to everyday life.
I really liked the demonstrations, the real life application videos she showed the class, and the generous extra credit she offered.
I loved all aspects of the course, I think she did a great job at giving us many resources to accomplish the assignments to the best we could.
Homework quizzes help me understand what I was learning. Again she also made the lectures fun and interactive with her jeopardy game.
The assignments that were given
The videos and mini study quiz games. If it weren't for Dr. Stewart's class, I wouldn't have made friends with my classmates or be so willingly to go to a class!
learning how to apply it to my life
The extra assignments helped me understand the course material.
The lecture slides
The sports nutrition aspect and creating a diet log/ finding RDA's, UL etc for myself.
Learning about the nutrients and minerals in each type of foods, how to eat good and feel good.
I liked how concise everything was. The classes were well structured, the lectures were organized, and the tests were clear.
Assignments and powerpoints
So many different types of resources available for help and to also use as a study guide for the exams.
I liked learning about the vitamins and minerals.
The section on life span nutrition
All of them
I liked how it wasn't boring -- she found ways to keep the class entertained with videos and actual examples of body processes up on the projector.
examples
i liked that she did the tests with the pink and yellow cards b/c it showed me what i needed to go over in that particular section
Practical advice for diets in real life
Deficiency was a good topic.
Power Points
The assignments were useful in learning how to apply it to real life.
helps me in what i want to do with life
A lecture based class that is not boring and easy to pay attention to - very hard to find. This course is very applicable, making it much easier to comprehend and use in real life situations.
How to choose foods wisely to live a healthy life.
The personal stories and Maria doesn't take one side. If something is controversial, she explains the pros and cons of both sides.
I loved the demos that she did in class and I also liked all of the tools and resources that are offered to help me study for this class.
I liked learning about the correct ways to diet.
I enjoyed the in-class demonstrations (egg osmosis, metamucil, etc.), the videos, and vitamin/mineral jeopardy because they all helped to strengthen my understanding of course material. Dr. Stewart's bunny, Hank, is also adorable (and has plenty of great facts to share)!
Everything
I liked applying the concepts to real life in Assignment 2. This assignment involved us in tracking what we ate for a day and if it met our macronutrient requirements based on our average level of activity. I am a self-motivated athlete and health enthusiast, so I most enjoyed learning about how to maintain a health body with proper nutrient intake. Also, I'm glad she drops the 4 lowest quiz scores because I often forgot to take the quizzes! I'm sure she understands this, which makes her all the more awesome :)
Interactiveness in class, cool presentations and learning about different things to eat and how to have a better, healthier diet Great study guides, tries very hard to prepare us for tests which is helpful and refreshing since most teachers (esp teachers of lecture halls) don't do this
Youtube videos.
Learning abbot the eating disorders and different deficiencies were really interesting to me.
I enjoyed learning about everything. I enjoyed food safety and watching the video about the centarians.
That she teaches things that are applicable in our daily lives. Things she teaches are very useful.
the documentaries.
Better than a big lecture hall
I enjoyed the demonstrations, videos, and group activities the most because it allowed me to see real-world applications of the topic. Since I am naturally shy, the group work allowed me to get to know other students and ask them for help when needed.
Everything!
Interaction with group members when working on projects or reviews
Activities that completely applied to us and is useful for the future.
In class activities
Visuals in the power points.
I really enjoyed the group activities that we did and I liked the fact that the course was very interactive.
rational layout and explanations which were logical and based on real life info. Incorporation of multimedia such as the video about the Karolinska clinic in Sweeden. I like that there is no attendance policy. It is a testament to the quality of the class the high % of students who showed up every day. The mini quizzes (positive reinforcement) are a much better way to entice people to come to class (and have them actually get something out of it) than a compulsory attendance policy. Besides, the tests are sufficiently hard that people who don't study won't get good grades if they haven't come to class.
I liked applying what we were learning to the food choices that we were making every day. It made all of the information seem relevant and important in our every day lives.
she gave us a lot of extra credit
The way Dr. Stewart related course content to every day life.
The group work, it was fun being able to communicate with my fellow classmates, I wish we got to do more.
The fact that it was a "hands-on" learning environment. And snacks were a plus!
All
What I liked about the course was being able to communicate with our groups o table because even though we feel lost together we learn at the same time. Also i loved the fact that even though we did really horrible on the exams she helped us to gain points back to better our grades (:
I liked how this was in a smaller class compared to lecture halls. I learn better in smaller classes, as well as progress well, too.
She always have the day planned and she has many ways to help students learn in class like games and group discussions and constanly learning about nutrition.
Demonstrations in class
I enjoyed discussing GMO.
Learning about health disorders.
I liked that we had assignments because those were the things that actually helped my grade.
All of the activities we perform in class as well as working in groups to solve problems.
I liked the interactivity of the course, because it was more difficult to fall asleep in class.
Group discussions
everything. This is my second time taking this course (my first at HCC) and I would strongly say that I understand it clearly now whereas I had a difficult time taking it during my first time.
I liked that Dr. Stewart incorporated examples with her lectures. I also liked working in groups on various items through the class.
It's course had great group work. Helps you understand material much more easier.
The hands on aspect rather than the lecture format.
30. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I did not like the weekly quizzes. It is hard to quiz on something you have not learned yet, but the materials are there to achieve good grades on the quizzes, but I did not take advantage of those materials.
I thought the tests were pretty hard but she gave a lot of opportunity for extra credit so it balanced out.
NONE!
I didn't like it when the schools technology would fail on her. It made it really hard to regroup or compensate.
n/a
exams
Nothing really
true/false questions
None
exam.... so confuse some question
Eating disorders was something I could have gone without discussing.
Probably vitamins and minerals just because it was a little hard to memorize all their functions but it was still fine, and she really made point to help us learn the functions of them
The weekly tests and tricky assignments. The fact that the weekly tests and assignments were part of our grade definitely contributed to the anxiety I had in this class. I would be terrified taking the weekly tests because even though I knew the material, I was extremely scared of doing poorly on the tests for fear that it could sink my grade. I also did not like the tricky assignments. On some of the assignments, the questions were worded in such a way that it was confusing. And to be honest, some of the different questions, such as calculating % of carbohydrate intake was not covered by the professor, so most of us had to extrapolate the information based on what was covered in class. And we got it WRONG. In that case, that information should have been taught to us because we did not learn it in class. Itâ??s wrong to deduct points off students based on the information that was not covered. I found this more of a nuisance, but I didnâ??t like the fact that no one retained the extra credit quizzes. When I emailed the professor and the TAâ??s about the reason I got a point discrepancy, I did not know what I got wrong. They just told me the answers to the mini quiz, but that was not the information I wanted to know. I wanted to know WHAT specific questions I got wrong, so that I could learn from my mistakes and learn the right material before the test. I have now made it a habit to take a picture of my mini quiz before I turn it in so that I can compare it to the answers revealed on Laulima. I wouldn't have to do this if the extra credit quizzes were retained.

i didn't really like having to do weekly online quizzes.
Quizzes on the weekends.
umm power points
Quizzes that we didnt learn the information on yet and how the resources to study for the test are useless.
nothing
The exams were way too confusing.
I did not like the quizzes. I thought they didn't help a lot in trying to make us understand the concepts since they are easily forgettable and I think they bring our grades down.
I didn't dislike any aspect of the course.
Probably the half an hour video she showed to us regarding eating disorders
I could have gone without all the stages in life diet stuff. Except for the pregnancy and infant stage for me everything else was kind of common sense stuff you learn in everyday life.
The online weekly quizzes.
I didn't like taking so many online quizzes
the test were very difficult
all
Nothing
Food born illnesses.
I did not like that some of the questions on the tests were never covered in class, or mentioned as specific topics to read for studying.
i didnt like doing the assignments, but it wasnt bad
Taking quizzes before discussing the topic in class time.
There was nothing I did not like.
Purchasing the text book because I rarely use it.
nothing
quizes
I did not care for the weekly quizes because they were easy to forget about.
On some days it was really hard to sit and listen to an 1 hour 15 minute lecture. Those days it was usually all lecture, no demonstration or video or anyhting. Vitamins and minerals
The hard tests that I always thought I was prepared for but never receiving good grades
the stuff for midterm 2
doing equations
N/A
A LOT of information to take in. But still good.
the movement of food through the body. it could get complicated at times.
The ongoing construction right outside the classroom.
I wouldn't complain about anything to be honest.
Those online quizzes, just because I always forgot to take them every week.Non
So much to remember!
none
Online quizzes. For the first like 8 it would tell me or started the day that it closed.. And I forgot about them.
weekly quizzes
Learning the names of minerals, vitamins, body systems.
Some classes felt like they dragged on a bit. A little more stimulation in the more information based topics would have helped a lot.
Nothing
Not feeling adequately prepared for quizzes and exams

Weekly Quizzes on topics that weren't covered yet.
The weekly quizes
Bombing my 3 exam over pregnancy and placentas because I don't want to hear it.
None.
Learning about each of the nutrients, especially vitamins & minerals because they were hard topics.
N/A
Hard class, terrible professor, do not know how to study for it!
Nothing...
minerals and vitamins because there is so much info on it
I didn't really enjoy the weekly quizzes, especially it being due on sundays by midnight. Sometimes I didn't think the questions were fair because they weren't really talked about in class when we got to those quiz topics.
The weekly quizzes were difficult to like all of the time because it was based on material that we would learn the upcoming week, so if you want to do well, you need to read the section and teach yourself. Sometimes I had more motivation than others, and it showed in my grades, so I didn't always like it just because of that.
Time limit on quiz
In my opinion, the exams were pretty tricky. The material seems straight-forward but the exam questions show otherwise.
required online hw
The exams
Honestly, I enjoyed the whole class.
Memorizing vitamins and minerals, but that can't be helped.
None.
the exams were kind of hard
i like almost everythin but the vitamins and minerals section was very dry
The aspects that I liked the least dealt with the vitamins and minerals.
The weekly quizzes - they were great learning tools and a good way to make sure we read and prepped for the materials we would go over in class. However, they were a killer to remember to do every week, and could be bad for your grades if you were forgetful like me. A reminder system somehow being put in place might have helped.
Online quizzes.
Online Quizzes, the in class extra credit could feel more important if we actually gained more than one point for getting it all correct.
The fact that the weekly quizzes were every sunday, because after the weekend you tend to forget about a quiz
I didn't like the exams.
none
Everything was informative. Maybe the sports section was okay..
tests were really hard and weekly quizes hard to keep up on sometimes
The digestive system
I didn't enjoy sports nutrition as much, but only because I am not interested in sports.
Some topics in the class were hard to swallow at times, mainly because a lot of the information revolves around some biology, which I've never been very good at.
I didnt really like what little math and calculations.
nothing that I can think of
tests
Guidelines for a healthy diet except for the food labeling.
memorizing minerals and vitamin functions, sources, deficiencies, and toxicities. It was very complex.
weekly quizzes
Some information is mundane, but neccessary.
How hard it was.
The weekly quizzes

The bountiful terms that needed to be studied.

The online quizes.
I didn't really like the weekly quizzes but mostly because they're only 5 points and getting one wrong on those quizzes can greatly affect your grade.
Quiz every Sunday.
Some topics went quite a bit more in depth than I feel is necessary for the average person.
quizzes every week on information we haven't gone over yet
nothing
JUst how long it was and how fast we moved.
How quickly some material was covered.
I liked the videos. And the pregnancy and child and aging chapters were really interesting and relevant to where I am now.
sometimes lectures were too long
The weekly quizzes on material we haven't learned yet seems weird. I would have done it the other way: teach the material, then offer the weekly quiz to see what we retained. All the structure cells and such, vitamins/minerals, and the functions/systems were confusing. The biological aspect and some of the mathematical stuff regarding energy expenditure and our BMI/weight/kcal stuff was hard, as I'm awful at math.
Chemical processes of nutrients inside the body.

quizzes being on material we haven't learned yet
The midterms
I least liked the fact that our quizzes are due on Sunday, but I realize that it is my fault for waiting until Sunday to complete them.
The weekly quizzes but that was probably on my own account :)
The only thing i can think of that I liked the least were the weekly quizzes because they were given before the topic was discussed in class, however that causes students to read before coming to class so we have some knowledge.
Lecture without the projector for a small time.
The quizzes did not match up to the lecture. Sometimes it was difficult to find answers in the book and lecture powerpoint.
none!
I struggled on a few of the exams.
Everything was good
Some confusing questions/ answers on tests.
Nothing, everything was great.
The quizzes being due on Sunday night always threw me off. I completely forgot about them sometimes. It would be much easier if they could be done in class or on a class day.

All of it was pretty beneficial.
its the first of 3 straights classes
There isn't anything about the course that I disliked.
I liked everything I learned.
The nutrition concepts and stories.
The weekly quizes :(
I did not like learning about all the vitamins and minerals because it was all very confusing cause it was all so similar.
nothing
There wasn't really anything I didn't like about this course.
Very challenging, lots of work for a gen.ed class
the exams and homework.
Learning about the body tract, digestion, and the vitamins and minerals only because I was a little confused at time. But I soon learned to understand it afterwards.
Probably the digestive system, but that's because there's so many components that are related to it. Not that I didn't like it, but it was just a lot to memorize.
Group work :P
the tests
the exams. I studied for every exam and did horrible on it because the test questions were tricky for me to understand but if the questions were easy like the practice exam and questions we go over in class I would pass so easily
While I understand that the weekly online quizzes forces students to read ahead and be prepared for the upcoming lessons, I sometimes forget what I read by the time the topic is discussed in lecture. Some subjects take longer to cover and therefore I may read the content for the quiz on Thursday (and do the quiz by Sunday) but the material may not be covered until next Thursday (or the week after). This is just a minor aspect because some topics are still familiar during the lectures.
Vitamins and Minerals
I want more chance to bring up my grade. Wanted more extra-credit opportunities!
Exams were hard
n/a
Weekly quizzes.
The only things that I did not like about the course was that some of the questions on the tests were worded weird, making them difficult to comprehend, and the practice tests were not very similar to the actual tests. Which made me question whether or not I should even take the practice test and use it as a study tool.
The exams were pretty difficult, I thought. Quite a bit of memorization, considering most students, I imagine, are taking this for G.E. credit. Maybe ease up on the tests a little.
That classroom in the nursing building is pretty weird. It seems like a good idea, however I just prefer a large lecture classroom. Dr. Stewart does a good job tailoring the class to this type of a small-group orientation but it is not my style and found the physical orientation of the seats to be a distraction when I was trying to listen to the lecture. I had rather face the lecturer than only just a TV screen.
I did not like how the study materials for the test often were completely different than the questions asked on the test.
the activities
The exams, they were difficult and the study guides didn't really prepare us for the exam.
Probably the weekly quizzes, moreso because I had a hard time keeping track of them, and missed a few.
None
I sometimes didn't like the quizzes online. Not because It's hard, well sometimes it is when i don't know the answer but just that I forget that I have a quiz to do by every sunday. Other than that everything is great

Professor Stewart is not a bad teacher and I really hope she continues to teach human nutrition. I can see she is passionate about her subject and it really makes people want to come and learn more from her.

I loved the course! I feel like I've learned so much and I want to continue using everything I've learned in my everyday life.

Hello
Great class! Thank you.
I feel that if every teacher were like Maria I would actually like going to class/school/college.
I hope to take another class from Dr. Stewart, and her class may have convinced me to continue the study of human nutrition and maybe follow a related career path like a dietitian.
Thank you for the wonderful class!

Though class is good and not that hard to get a good grade, getting an A is still a challenge. Weekly quizzes before going over it are pretty hard to answer, especially with a time limit.

Great professor, junk exams.
Too many ways to fail with weekly assignments that affect your grade greatly. People don't have time for it.
Decent job. Good teacher.
Maria is a great teacher!
Maria is a great professor and should continue her hard work. I had a great semester. Both fun and insightful.
Great teacher!
Great course! However, if you have computer problems while taking her online exams, she will not help you out. Even if you email laulima, she still will not open her quizzes again, and that could really hurt you in the end.
Thank you Professor for a great semester!

Thank you Dr. Stewart!
Dr.Stewart is a great teacher!!
I actually learned in this course even if it isn't required for my major. I could apply it to real life situations.
Best instructor I have had this semester!!
Please keep Professor Stewart. I would like to take other courses taught by her.

Excellent professor! I highly recommend taking this course, or any nutrition course (if offered) with her!

Dr. Stewart is up there on my list of favorite teachers. She's a keeper!
Mrs. Stewart made this class very entertaining and fun.
Dr. Stewart, you ALMOST convinced me to possible double major in nutrition although I probably won't, but I enjoyed your class thoroughly and I wish I could take it again (and get an A).
I will miss you and your class next semester! Taking your class one of the best choice I've made in college :)! I truly think you deserved the teaching award. Congratulations!
I would definitely recommend this course to anyone if it were taught by Professor Stewart. I wish I had taken this course earlier and possibly enrolled in other classes taught by her.
Group discussions should be shorter and have a specific purpose.
I loved this class! Thank you for pushing me!
Great class!
