6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Sonja was supportive and available to answer questions.
The applicability of the course The instructor was very helpful.
I find Laulima most valuable and helpful about the course.
I liked the hands-on activities like focus groups and KI interviews with real people in the public. The instructor was always available by e-mail or phone to answer any and all questions. And always responded in a timely manner. That was very helpful since everything was always so confusing as to what we were supposed to do in the class.
instructor had professional knowledge in the area we were studying.
- Steps to conduct a qualitative study - Working in group - Improvement of writing skill and active thingking
I learned a lot about the Micronesian population. I learned the basics of doing a need assessment. I really feel this class help with my education.
guest lectures were very helpful and interesting
Learning about Micronesians in Hawaii
The guest speakers.
The instructor's lectures were excellent. I enjoyed doing the focus group.
learning about this population and how to work with the issues common to our PH communities. Learning about NA process through applying it to our community.
7. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
The changing schedule and assignments could be confusing if it was not clearly stated in class or updated on the syllabus.
Nothing
I find some of the homeworks least helpful about the course.
I wish we had more time in class to discuss and get things figured out before class is over. Less guest speakers and more class time focused on what we are actually doing. With a 3 hour class it seems like we should have had plenty of time to get everything done in one class but it always seemed scattered and confusing when class was over. I also didn't like how the instructor kept adding new things, like new focus group locations and new guest speakers. It is nice to do that if we had lots of time, but I feel that for the purposes of a 1 semester class it is easier on the students to stick to the plan and keep it simple. Adding lots of new things and constantly changing the plan and the groups put lots of stress on the students.
classroom environment was very crowded, lacked natural light, distracting
- the contents of some guest-speaker presentations seemed not serve or relate to class' objectives such as Nuclear testing - during class too much information was provided, circulated, and changed at once that made me confused about what would do in the NA practice, and in the assigned tasks or homework.
Not knowing what was due when.
technology would sometime get in the way (people not using their mics, mic not picking up audio well, trouble switching between media, etc.)
Too much information to process. Not enough time to focus on one aspect of needs assessment.
doing a single paper with the entire class.
working with team mates who wouldn't work

21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Sonja brought it a lot of experienced speakers who had different perspectives on working with our target population. I liked that most lectures werebroken up into her teaching and then a speaker or group activity. Somes times we weren't given a break, which made the class hard to focus on for 3 hours. It would have been good to have more group collaboration time during class, instead of a lecture or guest speaker. I also liked that Sonja stayed positive even when the class was having some time orgazing.
Everything. It was extremely valuable to me.
I liked the hands-on application of actually conducting interviews.
I liked the class project because of it's hands-on, real-world approach.
as stated above
write NA report
guest speakers, key informant interviews, and talking with 'experts' in the subject.
Presenters
Small group work and collaboration, lectures, hands-on learning procedures.
The pace of the class seemed irregular, like we had a lot of activities and the guest speakers kind of interfered with group work, though they were also good, too. I cannot imagine pre-planning a sequence for all of what we learned. At other times I wish we were working on all the last minute stuff we had to do, instead of waiting and then being crammed. Sonja was sensitive to the work load and accommodating. The Dr. Senator, Josh Green was very interesting, informative, helpful. Would like more in depth instruction on grant writing process as it relates to NA.
22. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I think that after Sonja has more experience teaching this course, her expectations of a course schedule will become more realistic and the course will be better organized. The way in which groups changed and were organized by numbers instead of their roles was confusing. There should be a better overview of the purpose of each step in the needs assessment in the beginning of class. Becuase of how much work we did in groups, the the likelihood of a group member missing class, assignment schedules would be better if they were set further in advance, but I understand some times we had to be flexible on where our efforts were needed. It seems that the tests were not relevent to what we were doing witht he needs assessment, and they didn't contribute much to my learning.
None
I guess it's having to work as a class.
as stated above
- Nuclear testing
class seemed hectic at times, and maybe could have been more organized (it is difficult when teaching this class for the first time though)
Group assignments
Trying to coordinate a huge paper with the whole class
I thought the speaker for research ethics on consent-guy wasted a lot of our valuable time and we could have been done with him in 15 minutes. I didn't want to be the grumbling one, but we needed more group time, then and at other times. I wish we had shorter presentations from guest speakers. LAULIMA could have been much more user-friendly. Very hard to find documents, not filed very orderly, big guessing game. Nancy Partika used Laulima more efficiently-please get more information on using Laulima better. Too much stuff in the resources files, cannot tell what is what. The announcements section is a good way to alert students to new resources, info. Being on Maui, it was hard when students repeatedly forgot to use their mic, and even seemed put out to have to do so. In all the HITS classes I've done, this class was the worst for people not learning to use their mics. I feel it needed to be handled stronger, so the class would not be so continuously and repeatedly negligent. The one younger woman (who works with Sonia?) seemed particularly annoyed when I had to keep saying we could not hear. It seemed disrespectful. It was also hard working with a single partner here and stressed our relationship.
23. My overall evaluation of this course is...
The experience of diong this project for a vulnerable population was enrichening. At first I thought the class was very disorganized and like I didn't know what was going on, and our schedule changed often. I think that Sonja is a passionate and supportive teacher. Since this was her first time teaching I'm sure she will improve and that this course could be both effective and interesting ofor students. I suggest that the homework be less about the text book and more about what needs to be done for the main project.
Excellent
Great class that was very intensive but provided a good foundation for the conducting needs assessments.
Good. I would recommend it to all public health students/
The instructor worked very hard, and being their first time teaching the class, I think they did well. But it was very confusing and our assignments were constantly changing and adding new things. It was a frustrating class for me because I never knew what was going on. I learned a lot about needs assessment though, so I believe the course fulfilled its purpose, I just wish it could have been in a more organized way.
quite pleased, because we run out of time for actual quantitative research and for learning basis program planning.
I really enjoyed this course. It will continue to get better the more Sonja teaches it. She is a really passionate, hardworking person and professor.
great class! very challenging, but a really valuable experience.
Needs to not have so many different aspects of needs assessment and perhaps more in class work group time. I believe the instructor was good, but may need to practice commanding authority in the class.
Great! Thank you so much, I've learned a lot and will use this knowledge in my everyday work.
A learning experience, valuable information, need more opportunities to apply. I am inspired to work in our community on this subject. MAHALO
