Open to adjust for the well being of the students. Makes the teachings lively and teaches so that students can understand and relate to what is being learned to a personal level. A requirement of a student teacher conference mid-semester would be more helpful to discuss concerns relating to in class lectures, to clarify what is expected and needs improvement in logs in detail, and also to gain suggestions in improving personal diets for logs, grades, or assignments.
Great teacher! Class really opened my eyes to what I'm eating and how I can change my diet for the better. It really helps me know that she is a trust worthy source, knowing that she is also a doctor.
i really liked how she gave a choice between a presentation and a paper. I always can explain and present topic matter better in the form of an essay and im glad she gave us the choice.
enjoyed the class!!!
loved that she expresses students to study and work for their benefits in the future and other classes (not just for hers)
I loved this class. I wouldn't want her change a thing. anyone who says other wise is ridiculous. thanks for everything Dr. Boyd.
I was pretty intimidated by this class in the beginning of the semester, especially since it was stressed every class that "3 absences equals an F." But as the semester went on, I saw that Dr. Boyd was actually quite lenient and open to changing deadlines and working with the students to make things easier for us. I feel that she did things like this so that we could actually learn and understand the content and apply it, instead of just memorizing it for the test, only to forget it a few days later.
I enjoyed this class a lot and I found each lecture very interesting. However, for next years students and on, there should be some kind of rubric for the journals. They are worth a lot of points and since there are only 3 and we don't get any homework, it would have been nice to have a rubric of exactly what had to be in each journal. I also enjoyed the project, so continue that too!
She is very knowledgeable when it comes to FSHN. She is always helpful, and thinks about her students by asking us if we need help and or extending our deadlines when PROCRASTINATORS don't get their homework in on time. She also gives us the option to redo work which is a plus, because sometimes students don't understand the material. She doesn't only care about our school work but how we will use this knowledge to help improve our health. Overall she is a very good teacher. I enjoyed her class.
I have the utter most respect for you not only as a women but a "Hawaiian women" you give young women of Hawaiian blood hope and inspiration that we can do it no matter what. Mahalo Kumu for your kindness and your time.
Very fun and good learning environment. Easy as well, if you keep on top of things and do what needs to be done and pay attention. I would recommend a friend to this class.
At first when I took this clas I only took it for a Science credit. however I'm really thinking about a major in nutrition. this class has helped my understand dieting and the nutrion behind dieting. When I started the semester I weighed about 225-230 pounds. Today I weigh in at 210 pounds. I feel better and have more energy. I excercise everyday and and have learned to incorporate vegstables into my diet (which I really don't care for). I have learned tha an Avacado contains fat but it's good fat, and nuts (unsalted) can be a substitute for protein, fats and some nutrients. The only thing I wish we'd have more time for the test taking maybe at least about 90 minutes. Other than that I enjoyed the class and enjoyed her as a professor. I found that class was informative and the way she explained things she did it in a caring and understanding way (until we got it). Thank you Jamie...-Stacy
Thankyou Mrs. Boyd I really liked and appreciate taking this class from you, you are by far one of the best teachers on campus thankyou so much for all that you taught me.
Definitely a good class to take. Although at first i didnt really like her teaching style, because i was used to the "community college teacher" but she's a DOCTOR! She moves very quickly and i got used to it and i'm glad i stuck to it because that is the way college should be! I liked that she offered either a paper or presentation, of course i chose presentation, but i think that choice is very good. She definitely knows her subject and it got me thinking about my health and everything i eat. The nutrition journals are good too and i like how it started off with not as much points, because you don't know what exactly she's looking for and when you get your feedback you understand and then you better yourself for the next journal that's worth more points and so forth. Very good! I also loved how she was so flexible with everyone's thoughts, if we needed more time on something, she was fine with it...that really helped a lot! Very good teacher! Fast moving class, but hey..it's college! :)
Great professor!
really excellent class, also i think the choice between doing a paper OR presentation helped a lot
i really loved this class! she was the best!

Knowledgeable. Sarcastic=funny. Unsupportive. She knows her stuff, so much that she can word it in ways that make the information easier to understand and carve into our minds. Sheʻs very sarcastic, which Iʻm guessing sprouts from her distaste in the way Americans donʻt care about their health. I do not know, though. I do not like her. From the get go, just sending off really bad vibes. Maybe itʻs just me. Eh, but anyways...I didnʻt really apply myself and she knows this...and she rubbed it in my face. Most unappreciated.

11. Other comments:
This class could of been done exclusively on-line with no attendance but making presentation dates was great better than reports or more tests and she did enforce the attendance policy especially for the presentation days. I liked that when we came to class we didnt review what we already read in the text she added more information to it whether from personal experience or newest findings.
Mrs Jamie Boyd is an outstanding teacher as well as a likable person because of her sincerity and posotive outlook in handing down valuable information.
I took this class for my own benefit (not towards as a pre-req) and have found it to be life changing i how I look at food. I am extremely grateful for Dr. Boyd's method of teaching.
I felt the point system was a little off balance with 120 points for the 3rd journal, and only 100 points for the presentation. The presentation required a lot more work, yet was worth less points. I would have liked the option to write a paper rather than do a presentation. Overall a really informative class!
The course informational and the way that it is structures works.
Dr. Boyd is a good teacher however I think that her class could easily be taught online.
I like having the online test and quizes, however, the questions are so minute that they seem to be irrelevant to the bulk of information that my knowledge maintains. Looking up a small detail doesn't seem as important as retaining a broad fact. Also it would be helpful if you went over more text book material in class since that is what we are graded on. Going over the main points in class will better help students understand the information in the book. However, i was upset a few times because the book had clearly stated a fact, word for word, and when i had summit it as my answer on the quiz, it was marked wrong. I understand that is not your fault and that it is the companys. However, it is not fair to the students who take the time to look for the answer and ultimately get it wrong anyways. My suggestion would be to change the online provider or if possible make your own questions, that way you know the material that will be expected for us to know and you will be able to emphasis on important points rather than irrelevant numbers.
Tests created by the learning system could potentially have more than one answer; however, the system only looks for 1 particular answer. One test in particular had multiple choice and was not easily understood what needed to be done as no instructions were given. Not being able to return to a question made it more difficult. I do not understand why that option is not available. Prior testing matrix determined that going through a test and answering the question that is known then going back to those that require more attention is conducive to a better learning opportunity.
I think this class should be an online class, because all the course work and testing is done online anyway, and everything that is lectured on in class is not relevant to the test or quizzes. I never felt it was necessary to attend class, however I had to because of the attendance policy. I was frustrated because there was no room for questions or disagreements regarding the quizzes or tests, and there were times when I felt the answers were graded incorrectly by the system, and had proof in the book. However, Dr. Boyd was never open to changing any grades on the tests.
I feel that this course should be an online course because nothing covered in class is ever on exam, making it somewhat pointless to really attend class, other than for the term presentation. Other than that, the information covered overall is very interesting.
Sheʻs a tough love teacher, which is why we didnʻt work. I need support, understanding, and...I donʻt need someone shoving sarcastic, condescending comments in my face and in front of my peers. She should learn to exercise some tact.
The one problem I saw with this class was the attendance policy. She enforced a strict, four-absences-equal-class-failure rule that I felt was unfair. I don't believe you should be able to disqualify all of a students hard work and time due to absences that may not have been avoidable. Surely you could still discipline students by taking off points-per-absence. However, I learned a lot in this class and thoroughly enjoyed having Jamie Boyd as a teacher. I would recommend taking her class to everyone who cares about their health.
Really enjoyed the class. Windward need to implement more classes of the sort at their school. Nutrition is the only class that remotely has anything to do with cooking.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
what foods benefit what in your life.
Everything! I learned sooo much and every time I'm with my friends I tell them new things I learned in class. All the information about my health was so interesting and I can apply it all to my life.
Learning about things that effect us in our everyday life helped me to better understand and also just kept me very interested.
I'd say almost every aspect of this course were valuable because they can be applied to and used efficiently in everyday life. The food pyramid and vital foods, fats, and calories are what will stick with me the most. Along with doing what I can to keep my family as healthy as I possibly can!
How to stay Healthy naturally
The information I received in this course will actually help me understand how to live a better, healthier life. Dr. Boyd was able to bring forth the urgency of good nutrition in a way that will make a lasting impression in my nutritional choices from now on. The text was also very informative, yet not very hard to read and understand.
I liked learning about all the different vitamins and in what way they benefit your health. I also liked learning how to do the daily nutrition logs because I now can see if my daily diet is a healthy one or not.
Everything in this course relates to our daily lives. Taking this class has helped me to make more educated decisions about food and life.
I found the most valuable aspects of this course to be the determining of portion size and the amount of calories needed for my lifestyle.
Knowing the value of eating right and the importance of food in your life. The valuable thing to me was learning how to better myself and my family and how i stand in my life.
The whole thing.
learning what foods are good and which ones are not presentations garden work
learning the super foods and colors of foods to show how you get all of your nutrients. also doing presentation that allows you to understand things better when people put it into their own words.
everything
Basic nutritional knowledge. Diet affects quality of life thus this class has given me a lot of valuable knowledge.
The information about nutrition and how it applies to me as and indivisual. This course has given me life long tools to live a heathy and longer life. Learning firsthand about nutrition has armed me with the truth about how to live healthier, I think every student should take this class because it teaches you all about your body and its intake of nutrition.
the parts that dealt with everyday realistic nutritional goals that i can learn to follow and adapt to my lifestyle.
The textbook.
really effective visuals relating to the subject.
The aspects of the course that were most valuable was were food journals. It really made me realize what I was eating and the daily reccomended serving.
learning about the nutritional values about healthy eating. i personally was able to learn a great deal about healthy eating habits. though the material was hard to comprehend, i felt it was more valuable to apply the text into our lifestyles.
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
quizzes.
mmmm, everything was valuable. For example, I know that I'm always gonna eat a lot of fiber so I don't get ucky hemorrhoids. eeek.
Nothing everything I learned was very valuable and I enjoyed it very much.
Issues having to do with far countries were not as valuable to be because, though the information was interesting, there isn't too much I can do to drastically help their situations besides speading awareness. It did however, make me more grateful to have what I do.
The course only runs for 13 weeks and i strongly feel that the information presented was important enough to be studied more in depth. The presentations were great, but also took away more time we could have spend on course content. A 16 week course or putting the course on line may be options to give students a chance to really digest the life changing facts nutritional science offers.
Nothing. I enjoyed learning it all.
I feel like there should be a day to do a test review in class, all my other class have reviews.
I feel that the least valuable aspects of the course were the process of exams. You are given two tests that are full of material and points which mean so much to cram into one exam. If the big exams were broken up a bit, it would would make it easier to keep a decent grade and not lose so many points in one exam.

There were no least valuable aspects, none, everything I learned form this class has made me more informed about living better, and I share everything I've learn with everyone I come in contact with, I am teaching my friends how to live better through the information I received form this course.
it was all valuable to some extent.
The instructor and her teaching methods. I didn't like how she only highlighted what would be on our test and she stopped doing powerpoint slides halfway through the semester. She would chastise people for asking her to go back to a slide to copy down what would be on the test. She went through everything too fast and failed to use the book to teach from.
Everything I lern in school is valuable. I dont like the wording of the question.
I'd say the hardest was the midterm and final. To do 20 chapters in a midterm is hard. Even though we were given things to study, some of us studied material that wasn't on the test really. If it was, it was short. I think it'd be better if there were 4 quizzes. For myself I do better to study for 10 chapters with 50-100 questions on 10 chapters, than 100 questions for 20 chapters, because you don't know what exactly will be on the test.

She knows her material. However, it often felt like she was angry at the class and for no particular reason. Perhaps it is just her demeanor. Also, students were expected to be on time and not miss class even if sick. Yet the instructor was late on more than one occasion and missed two classes. This would have been fine if we had been shown a little more mercy when we were in the same position.

The class project helped me a lot. I had to step out of my box and work with a group for an audience that I never would have chosen had I been instructed to work on my own. The experience gave me confidence that I badly needed. Professor Boyd is very open with her own life experiences in the health and wellness industry. As a student wanting to become involved in the health field, I gained a lot of insight into what I will be dealing with in the future. I've realized how much of an impact one individual can make in terms of helping others live a healthy life. The experience at the loi changed my life in a positive way. I see the importance of saving the Hawaiian culture and have a better grasp on why the native Hawaiians are so hurt by the development of their island and the struggle to maintain their native culture. Besides the invaluable nutritional information I gained and have applied to my life , I've learned to tread lightly and pull others up with me as I gain more education. A community can only survive with the cooperation of all its members and Professor Boyd taught me the importance of community service. She doesn't just go through the motions of teaching in the classroom. She pushes students to become better members of society and to take what they've learned to make our island a better place to live. The food journals were also an excellent part of the course.
All aspects of the course, they all intertwine with each other, so it's all relevant.
The Nutritional information on foods. The serving sizes. What foods to avoid. What vitamins do for the body. Information on diseases and how to avoid getting them, through proper nutrition.
just the general ideas of nurtion and balanced diet. incorporating new foods esepcially vegetables into my diet, and limiting the amounts of fat that i consume.
Teacher instruction and course material was excellent.
Everything! It shed some new light into my way of thinking and eating.
I learned alot from doing the daily nutritional journals because I was able to see what I was putting into my body and how it was affecting me.
The lectures because they were long and detailed.
The way Dr. Boyd incorrporated the text book material in to personal daily life of her students with the nutrition/exercise journals made this nutrition course extremely valuable and relatable. The trip up the Uncle Mark's Lo'i was a magnificent attribute to the course and a great eye opener - there is no better way to learn about nutrition them from the 'aina! Thank you Dr. Boyd
learning about the all of the nutrition and what certain things can do, made me aware that i should start eating healthier, which i have been trying to do.
the memories that will probably stick with me are when she used specific examples that relate with what kind of foods we eat. It makes it more personal and easier to remember.
The fact that we learned about human nutrition and how to eat and live healthier.
Overall, the class has been very interesting and also very "eye-opening" for me. It taught me how important it is to be aware of the things we put into our bodies and also the amount of foods we put into our bodies. I brought all the knowledge and information she had given me and used them at home to better my families lifestyle, which has been going good so far.
the whole thing was great learning how foods affect the human body is very helpful. I also apply it to athletic training
I learned how to eat healthier. Now i know what to add in and take out of my diet.
The most valuable aspects of the course when I learned what is good foods in reponse to our body.
I enjoyed the food journals. It was an great experience to study exactly what I was eating and to monitor my caloric intake. It was surprising to tally up the calories that were being taken in and comparing those numbers with my metabolic activities. In general I really enjoyed learning about the various different nutrients and applied the knowledge that I learned into my own life by choosing to eat healthier. I also enjoyed the working on the Lo'i. It was a great experience to learn how others live off the land.
The class presentations that went over different health issues and new information being presented in the media.
everything i learned in this course was very valuable info for me
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I've studied nutrition for a while now, so some of the information was repetitive. What made it interesting for me was to see how much other students did not know about basic nutrition. It showed me that it is important to teach children how to take care of themselves at a young age and that we need to work to get health and nutrition classes in schools. I would suggest more interaction in the classroom. Students can zone out during power points and may not get all the important information. The films made the class more interesting. Relating current events with the subjects being studied makes the information more real and therefore more applicable. I especially liked the film on organic vs corporate farming. Too many people eat mindlessly and don't consider the impact on the environment and their own bodies. I was impressed and delighted that she wasn't afraid to broach what some consider a sticky subject.

I don't know.
i didnt find anything particularlly useless. nutrition is something that impacts you life everyday so all of the information i learned is useful
Nothing! You are great....
?
The group presentations. I don't know why she has students do these. More than half of the students are doing presentations on stuff we wont have to know for the final.

nothing really
the talks about inappropriate topics, such as: sex. Especially when we are discussing different ways of polluting the soil which results in bad quality food. If we had been talking about foods that work as a afrodisiacs for the human body, then it would be different, but it would be nice if maturity was held as a standard.
I don't think that there was anything about this course that wasn't valuable.
The part where i learned about being a vegetarian. Because it will never happen, I'm a meatatarian.
This class needs to be longer. There was not nearly enough time for us to have any discussion about the subject matter. Dr. Boyd barely had enough time to present the information sometimes. I learned quite a lot, but feel that there was so much more that I could have if the period was longer.
Although I enjoyed most of the powerpoint presentations, I would perfer working in groups and interacting more with the instructor as well as my classmates. A variety of both would have been nice. I did however enjoy the presentations by my classmates during the end of the semester.
The six page paper that we had to do on our health topic. I feel that we should have done small papers on different topics throughout the semester instead of a big one relating to one topic.
