7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Class discussion + simple summaries of the plot
Professor Arkenstone's lectures were given in a manner that was interesting, humorous, and engaging, which helped me to be interested in the material, and helped me understand the background and context of the assigned readings. His lectures were what made this course (which, because of its material, has the potential to be very boring and dry) actually fun. If it were not for his lectures and teaching style, I do not think I would have done so well on quizzes and in papers.
Learning about the development of Japanese literature, and seeing how it evolved as time passed.
The material was diverse and we were able to understand why we were learning what we were studying.
A very straightforward direction. Professor Arkenstone never was trivial about any assignments due, and always was available for help.
The class discussions about each reading.
All of it, in order to understand Traditional Japanese literature it is paramount to go over all the script, from the beginning to early modern JL. It was great too that we were able to have visuals, like the power points, the movies and the group work. =]
Casual but still engaging and able to learn
The book was easy to read. Group discussions brought interesting ideas out from the rest of the class.
I felt that the stories and the different cultural perspectives such as themes and style of literature/plays was valuable. I also felt that the discussion questions during class was valuable as it helped me to think about and better understand the material and sometimes even tie connections to certain aspects of the present.
The readings, class discussions and especially, Professor Arkenstone discussing the readings in class.
Diving into the book and breaking it down
Highlighting how the literature impacted society at the time and how it influenced future authors and poets in Japanese history.
Learning about pre-modern Japanese literature was something that I have always been interested in. I'm glad that I was able to read some of the famous works in Japanese history.
Discussion and powerpoint
Simplified versions of the readings and discussions between Sensei and the students were most valuable to me.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The PowerPoints were least valuable, because although they have many pictures, the information on them is rather minimal, and makes them relatively unhelpful when trying to study for tests.
Sometimes the discussion questions presented were a bit too easy to answer, leaving groups with a large amount of free time and not much else to discuss.
Everything in the course was related to the material we needed to learn.

nothing really

A few of the readings were not very interesting
The least valuable aspect was having to read through poetry, but this is a personal issue. Since these works are English translations, I wish we could have seen more original texts, though Professor Arkenstone did provide a few originals.

Very open-minded in opinions of students
I would recommend Professor Arkenstone to anyone who needs to take EALL 271 or 272.
Great teacher, really loves the subject and is always fun of energy. Also, kudos for trying to make it to class after having wisdom teeth pulled.
QA was an excellent teacher, he knew the course content and was able to interact with the students and make the work not only interesting but understandable. I believe we should have more teachers like him, too bad his work deals primarily in Japanese Literature and not other courses. Thanks for an awesome semester Mr. QA!!
Professor Arkenstone was fantastic and made class interesting and fun to attend.
As accessible as it was educational. Keep it up

I thought Jap. lit would be boring, but this class made me much more interested in Japanese literature. Really enjoyable.
Its fun when the teacher is just as shocked at the reading as the student
Sensitive and attentive to students and very accommodating. Would recommend to people that need to take this course.
Varying the group discussions from having the students discuss and having class discussions might get more students to participate. I feel that literature classes always struggle with group discussions because some students shy away from speaking. I noticed that having students write down a few sentences of what was discussed was one of the best ways to stimulate participation in this class.
Great professor
Awesome Sensei! Very enthusiastic about the subject that he teaches which in turn helped the students with their understanding and appreciation of the subject in general.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Group and class discussions and the powerpoints along with some humor.
For the student to understand about Japanese literature everything that is taught to the students by professor Arkenstone is very important. I am a Japanese American and knew nothing of my heritage including the literature. This course gave me more about my heritage than I could would have thought it would have. This course is allows the students to understand more especially if they are Japanese.
Discussion time.
Interesting readings
Learning about the significant changes in the style of Japanese literature from the Meiji era to the post war period
The stories we read were very diverse and gave us a good beginning understanding of literature from Japanese authors.
Professor Arkenstone really knows his stuff and also seems to enjoy teaching this material, which made the class more interesting.
How he tied the content of the class with historical references from Japan
Discussions PowerPoints and the information provided in them
The class discussions were the most valuable. Some of the readings that we had that were sometimes hard to understand became a lot more clear through those discussions.
Every thing is good. Thank you.
The class discussions.
The readings were directly related to the course and were fun to read for recreational purposes as well. Using powerpoints to explain about each author (as well as uploading them to Laulima) helped deepen my understanding about their significance in Japanese literature.
I found the discussions in groups to be most valuable because you get to share your ideas
Class discussions were best but could be more organized as to who is in what groups when.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The grading of the essays were difficult to gauge where there was need for improvement and what was different from the last essay which seemed like it would earn a lower grade but did not.
I personally think his entire class is valuable for the students to achieve the knowledge that he is teaching. The course is not easy but Professor Arkenstone makes the students want to learn more and he makes it easier for the student to easily pick up things they don't understand.
Nothing.
None
Sometimes the discussions were difficult to do as the answers seemed obvious.
Presentations by students. Seemed to hold little, if any, purpose besides "busy work"
I think everything was valuable. I found a lot of it really interesting.
Every thing is good. Thank you.

Everything was helpful. If I had to list one negative aspect of the course, the class discussions would be the only thing I can think of. The contents of the discussions were fine, but the class' enthusiasm for participating in the discussions was low overall making for dull classes until the end of the semester.
The actual participation in class being deducted from the final score
Too much reading. Overwhelming and not even writing intensive.

Professor Arkenstone impressed me with his knowledge and his willingness to go far beyond by helping all his students in wanting to learn the subject and he also showed the willingness to help out his students that had problems with the class readings and subjects. He is an asset to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and I would love to take more of his classes in the future.
Great Professor!
Entertaining teacher. Literature is not an easy subject to make interesting, but Professor Arkenstone was able to make the pieces of literature fun to talk about. I appreciated how we were able to talk about the works of literature in groups so we could all get different perspectives on the book we were reading.
I really enjoyed this class and the subject. The instructor was always ready to go and full of energy, especially considering how late in the day the class was. He showed actual interest in what we were reading and encouraged us to develop our thoughts on the readings. He also listened to what we had to say, even if it was against what most believe about the readings and allowed us to argue our positions.
Very enjoyable class. Expected an incredibly boring literature class and came out surprised, perhaps thanks to both the students and professor. Would suggest class and professor to others.
Thank you. The way you taught the class was really interesting.
Very good. Thank you so much,
It was a excellent experience. If the entire class was more inclined to participate from the beginning of the course, it would have been perfect.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Lectures/discussions talking about stories (as a class)
Being able to easily understand literary elements presented in the readings.
The powerpoints used while teaching the course had helped give visuals while learning to authors and understanding different times of Japanese literature.
Learning how literature changed throughout the years in Japan
most of the readings were very interesting and good reads. I feel like i have a strong overall knowledge in a lot of the big japanese literatures
Learning about the different authors, genres, and reasons for writing the novels that they did.
We read a lot of different novels and books, which were very interesting. I like how we went over the summary of each novel and we focused on the symbolism, etc.
The materials we read were very thought provoking and analyzing certain aspects of the texts made the readings make more sense. It was also really helpful that he compared and contrasted different texts we read.
This class is one of the favorite classes that I have taken. The instructor was very engaging and made me become genuinely interested in the subject of modern Japanese literature. Some of my favorite novels I read in this class are Kokoro, Drifting Cloud, Naomi, Dance Dance Dance, and Kitchen. The discussions really helped me to appreciate these books much more than I would have had I read them on my own. During the discussions, I liked how the professor always considered each person's idea and never denied the validity of the idea without good reason.
the readings
Got to see a wide range of Japanese Literature.
Class discussions
I actually do not like reading, so it is ironic for me to take a literature class, however, even though there was a reading everyday I was still able to manage. Interpreting novels can be kind of hard, so I am really glad we had in class discussions about what the story was about, so even if I focused on something else, by the end of the class we were all on the same track.
I like the atmosphere created in this class, the content was also taught in a much more interesting way than 271. The content was not rushed and gained more insight on Japanese literature.
He was well knowledgable in subject and was very enthusiatic.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Author presentations
None.
none
None.
reading dance dance dance
Knowledge I learned is not really useful in the real world. Participation grade should account for a lower percentage of the total grade.
Student Presentations.
There really is not much required for this class, so all the assignments seemed very relevant and valuable in my opinion.
I feel like it was a little difficult to place each novel or short story in its time period and to really grasp the author's style of writing.

Too many stories
Everything was fairly straightforward and not much of a hassle at all. In my opinion, this is quite a rare thing for a literature class.
Nothing should be changed in course. The course and the instructor was excellent.
i really enjoyed the class. I am someone who typically despises reading but a lot of these short stories and novels were enjoyable. Wished Dance Dance Dance was the finale though
Having to do research on a specific author and doing a presentation was really helpful because I still remember the author that I presented about. I think the hardest part of the class was remembering the time periods and dates of each work. There were a lot of works written in a specific time period, and it's hard to remember the order of each work in a given time period.
Extremely interesting course subject, and Arkenstone was very encouraging, explained difficult literature concepts in a way we could understand easily, and group discussions were helpful. I am also very appreciative of his understanding during student situations, and his genuine interest in the subject was infectious. I would absolutely recommend this course to those both required/not required to take this class! Thankyou for a wonderful semester!
Good job teaching the class. I find literature boring and useless to study.

Excellent instructor.
He is a great instructor. The materials of the course goes by fast, but he makes sure that everyone understands it. The instructor allows the students to finish the homework assignments by the end of the week. He is able to answer any questions regarding the materials. I'm happy to have taken this course by him. ã?¨ã?¦ã??è?¯ã??ã?£ã??ã??

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The emphasis on oral communication during class time and the focus on reading and kanji outside of class. Class exercises that encouraged speaking and homework assignments and drills. Repetition helped cement concepts and vocabulary.
Although I believe the kanji could be worked on a bit more, I found his teaching method very good, as well as oral communication and "games" helpful!
Being given the opportunity to converse in basic Japanese with my classmates daily helped out a lot with memorization. Class was fun and enjoyable.
speaking, conversations at the end of class, question and answer, powerpoints, go up to board and identify kanji or vocab
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
There wasn't really anything that didn't have any value. If anything sometimes the breaks were too long and could have been filled with more conversation or extra worksheets or something. Also, maybe there could have been more kanji to learn or extra credit for learning more kanji?
None.
