31. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Took the extra time to explain any homework or assignments that students didn't understand.
He was very understanding with deadlines and helpful when not understanding the material as long as you communicate with him.
He always ask if you would need any help on anything you were having a hard time with. Mr. Ota as how's students the respect in return of ours as well.
He is always reminding us of our assignments and encouraging us to get them in on time, if we didn't he would allow make ups-it showed me that he wanted to help everyone pass the class.
32. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Encouraged social interaction among the students.
He is very straightforward with what material you need to know and will be tested on.
I liked that Mr. Ota was very straightforward with his students in a grammatical way. His teachings were great. But his softness of the voice is what I wish he worked on a little bit more. Sometimes I couldn't really understand what he would say because he's soft spoken, which isn't a bad thing at all. Overall, Mr. Ota is a really great teacher.
He tries to make everything relevant to what is currently going on as well as make it interesting for students. I like that he ties in Hawaii and the culture into his course lessons.
33. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Overall an interesting course, and necessary for anyone planning on going into the language field of study.
He is pretty hilarious.
Recommend taking his class. He is a really funny instructor. Always good vibes around him. I feel that he never wants his students to fail the course so that makes me feel better that he actually cares about our grades and our future.
Nothing.
Ota shows that he understands the material in depth, but cannot convey the lessons in an easily digestible manner.
34. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes, because he provides many opportunities for students to pass and helps answer any questions thoroughly.

Yes. Because he is a really understandable teacher. You make the effort for the class, you'll get exactly what you want in the course. Great teacher.
Yes. I know much more about language than i even knew existed.
Unfortunately no. I may have a lot of interest in the subject--in the process of becoming an interpreter--Mr. Ota can't quite grasp the sweet-spot of zany and intelligent that keeps students' attentions.

31. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Professor Ota would show concern for students by always checking up on us, via email or in person during class.
He always provide readings for us to further understand the subjects. He also creates study guide and other materials to help us with the class.
Mr. Ota shows concern for his students in various ways. For example, he provides study guides for his students prior to tests and exams. This encourages students to study (because they have something to study) and, in this case, encouraged fellowship in class. A bond was created between Mr. Ota and his students when we (his students) complained about getting study guides late (the weekend of the test, for example) early in the semester. As the semester went on, Mr. Ota started providing study guides earlier showing that he takes his students' opinions and concerns into account. In addition, Mr. Ota isn't afraid to joke with his students, and when he jokes, he takes meticulous care to make it relevant to the course material. Lastly, Mr. Ota chose a textbook that was funny, cheap, and, most importantly, informational. As community college students, we (his students) aren't experts in Linguistics, we are usually broke, and we attend school to learn. Mr. Ota showed concern for his students by taking all of this into account and choosing a textbook that would cater to our needs.
Professor Ota showed concern by asking if there are any questions after each idea, example, or material he discusses.

I noticed he took attendance and would ask if any students have questions. He provided study guides for the exams and the final which was really generous.
32. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Very expressive teacher, with funny anecdotes that help the learning.
I liked this class because Mr. Ota kept the class discussion very interesting and fun. We were able to express opinons and concerns in a fair environment. I dont have any negative experience/concerns about the class
As mentioned earlier, I really liked Mr. Ota's choice of textbook the course. Like Mr. Ota, the textbook explained complex Linguistic ideas so that ordinary folk (non-Linguists, like his students) could grasp them. I also really liked how Mr. Ota introduced us to many languages throughout the course. I was amazed by how similar and how different languages could be, and I'm more confident in my ability to pick up languages now that I'm familiar with patterns/sounds/factors to look for in language. However, my favorite part of the course was attending class. Mr. Ota is a very animated, yet very humble, instructor and it was relatively fun attending class. What I "didn't" like about the course was the lack of time we were given to study. Early in the course, we were only provided with study guides the weekend of a test. Luckily, Mr. Ota fixed this and started giving us study guides earlier, and getting study guides was no longer a problem at the end of the semester. In addition, I didn't like how Mr. Ota sent emails. His emails usually use the same heading in the subject (LING 102) so it was hard to find what we needed (for example, the email with the Observation Note topics). Luckily, this can easily be fixed and I'm sure Mr. Ota will fix this bad habit after reading this evaluation. Overall, Mr. Ota's Linguistics 102 course was a very fun and educational introductory course despite a couple of minor, easily fix-able problems.
I like the examples of video clips he shows in class because it helps elaborate on a complex idea/subject. I dislike the fact that the total percentage of each 4 unit tests have a larger effect on our final grade, rather than the cumulative final examination.

There is nothing that I generally disliked about how Mr. Ota taught the course. I liked how he used worksheets and didn't always base his lessons straight from the textbook. He used a variety of mediums to teach the course such as videos, the chalk board, and worksheets. It was very convenient to communicate with him during the course via email.
33. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
The course was more than I thought it would be, and I learned a lot thanks to a good professor.
He's a very good teacher. Very optimistic and nice (too nice that i feel like sometimes students take advantage of him)
It was evident that Mr. Ota didn't have much experience teaching, but I think he could be an amazing professor if given more opportunities to teach. I noticed that Linguistics isn't always offered at HonCC (it isn't available for Spr. 2014 and it wasn't offered in Spr. 2013, for example) limiting Mr. Ota's opportunities to teach which is a shame. Linguistics is a very interesting and enlightening subject, and Mr. Ota is a very capable instructor.
Overall, he is a great professor....interesting course.

I thought by taking LING 102, I could better learn French and give insight about world languages in general. After taking the course, I understand the Linguistics contains more science (e.g. phonetics, syntax) than I initially thought. I think to take a Linguistics class, one should be familiar with a foreign language to better understand the differences between languages.
34. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
I would recommend Professor Ota because he is an engaging teacher, and keeps the learning fun and enjoyable.
Yes, Linguistics is a very interesting class and Mr. Ota lectures the class with a lot of optimism. Also he has a lot of visual materials that encourage and further explains the class subject.
I would definitely recommend Mr. Ota to other students. He is a fair grader, he's an entertaining/knowledgeable teacher, and he cares about his subject and his students. His teaching method is a little unorthodox--for example, he does use some profanity, but it is used in good taste to demonstrate Linguistics (Linguists study how people speak, and people, whether you like it or not, swear)--but it works.
Recommended, yes. I would recommend him to another student if he/se is interested in learning about the history and many other aspects of languages.

Yes, I would recommend Mr. Ota. He's very humorous, but knows when to get down to the work. Mr. Ota seems very knowledgeable about the topic. I often ask questions to clarify so he is very patient. I also ask questions about how what we are learning applies to other situations or languages. He is available through email and after hours (for LING 102, not a lot of students needed extra help outside of class as he gave homework to review/for practice). Mr. Ota is generous as he gave study guides for exams. He is also my Senior Project advisor and gave me feedback on my project, and helped me with my research paper.
35. Other comments:
Not many people take linguistics because they have no clue what it is. Most students in the class then come prepared, or eager to learn.
The book was informative but I think it wasnt needed for this class.
The course was great and the textbook was amazing. I didn't even try to sell it back to the bookstore because I wanted to keep it. 31. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He respond quickly in email and make sure we are always prepared for the exam.
He always answered students' questions and encouraged outside learning.
He asks each student questions to make sure we understand.
he allowed students who needed more time to finish a teat, go to another room for privacy and he could continue to teach other students who have finished a teat to learn the new lesson. if not, he allowed students to go to the test center to finish up the teat. he reminds students to bring in their homework, even if it is late. he still accepts them. he answers our questions and concerns as much as possible or would come back with an answer that he couldn't tell us before hand. He didn't know and had to look something up for us. He got back to us the next class time. He's very quick in getting back to us with a response. He would also right down corrections to our mistakes and marks the paper and place, so that we would know what it is. Sometimes his assignment can be a little confusing. It isn't too hard to figure out the lesson and look at the pictures to see what he really wants us to do. His assignments are very simple and practical, so it is easy to prepare, although it may be time consuming. The only problems of learning is with the way the textbook, workbook, and cd tape are written and made. It's hard to follow the cd for each lesson because the format does not match what is in the book. I can't follow the workbook dialogue because there is no true dialogue to follow. The cd dialogue doesn't match or follow the workbook. The workbook also uses new terms and grammar not yet covered in the present lesson. I only discover it when we get to the following new lesson. All this frustration and confusion makes it hard to learn and understand the subject matter. He is a good teacher. There is still too much to cover in one semester and we're still not quite there, yet. We didn't use much of the character workbook. Somehow, we could have used it a little more often. If he skipped something or focused more on one area, i feel i could have gotten more out the semester. time is too short.
32. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Sometimes he speak to quickly for me to process the conversation, but it just how people normally speak. I like to watch his expression as he tries to explain ideas. It is funny and interesting at the same time making us pay attention to what he is teaching.
Mr. Ota is a very good Chinese language teacher. He uses his experiences outside of class to further engage student involvement/learning in Chinese language and culture. He has a good sense of humor which makes the class fun and interesting.
I liked how we went over the material as a class and had a study guide for each exam.
He is very comical, humorous and dramatic with his body language and voice. He knows when to talk seriously with us. He doesn't scold or make us feel ashamed. he answers and explains the characters right away. Gives us new characters with words we come up with and not covered in the book.
33. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
It would probably be great to have more students in the class. 5 students probably make it easy for him to focus on each one of us but when it comes to class participation. It feels a little bit empty especially if the 5 of us don't know the answer.
He should teach more Chinese language courses.
Chinese 1 was an interesting class.
People should know that learning a language is not easy as it looks. It takes a lot of your time and you need to stay focused but enjoy hearing about the culture. Even if you are exposed to the language but don't speak it at home, it is very difficult to learn. One needs a lot of patience to try your best. Katsuhiro makes the class interesting. H talks about Chinese culture not mentioned in the book. Some true current events he will mention if there is time. We are allowed to ask questions and discuss things we want to know about or some current event. He even asks us somethings not in the book or if we are familiar with it.
34. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
I would recommend him simply because he makes the course fun. I find this course a lot more fun than japanese.
Yes, definitely, because he makes it easy to understand a complex foreign language like Chinese so learning it is fun and not a chore.
I would recommend Katsuhiro Ota to other students because he teaches the material well.
I would recommend him to other students. He seems to be patient and willing to help. He takes the time to explain things and what to expect for the next class period. He shares with us about traveling abroad and the organizations involved in studying overseas.
35. Other comments:
NO comments at all. Hopefully there are other chinese courses that will be taught in HCC.
He is sometimes humorous and funny. He does show concern for his students. If we have to make up a test, he gives us the time or within the week to do so. A person doesn't feel so rushed and could make plans on when to do the make up test and to prepare for it.

He is open to questions before, during and after class in person or email. He sincerely is interested in students activities.
He notifies the students/ me regarding tutoring or extra help with homework, classwork and tests reviews. He takes the time to explain the guidelines and work clearly.
32. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I like his experiences that he shares with the students that is related to the subject matter. He stays to the text, a plus and also adds in information that the text does not have. He shows the text on the screen and writes on information for the class to see.
I really liked Story Time, where he would share a story about his past and or share a story about his journey through asia.
33. What else would you like to say about this instructor/course?
Mandarin Chinese is very important to me both educationally and personally. Laoshi Ota is a very good teacher that is very knowledgeable and interested on the course and has helped me to learn with excellence.
I would like Katsuhiro Ota to maybe throw in a few vocabulary quizes in the begining of every class, because I find vocabulary quizes to be the most helpful thing a teacher could do. It usually takes roughly 10-15 minutes and it will probably help out a lot of students.

Yes. He can speak several languages and his Chinese (as far as I can tell) is very good :) He is very helpful and is willing to help the students grow in learning.
I would recommend Katsuhiro Ota to other students because he is a fair teacher and he also knows his material very well.

31. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He would set up retakes on failed test assignments and allow students to turn in late assignments.
Making sure they were able to complete assignments/projects, etc. Ensuring that questions are answered, and allowing questions to be asked. He asked you how you were doing before class, and treated everyone fairly.
Professor Ota would ask students questions during the lecture to make sure all the students understand and are on track. Grades were also posted really quickly and he answered questions very clearly and was easy to understand.
32. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
He had many examples to explain his way of thought.
I liked that he was no boring but very brilliant and funny, yet staying on subject and learning alot each session.He knows his material, and sticks to it, and makes it come alive.
I really liked the way the class was taught because it was easy to follow and professor ota made the class really interesting and fun.

Bu Ji Dou
Chinese Mandarin is very important and interesting. I think it is a very good course, and it will help me in my future. I plan on taking CHN 102 Mr. Ota is a very good teacher, he knows his subject well and is very well versed in the subject. He has helped me alot to learn well this past semseter.I look forward to learning more from him in the future.

Yes. He is a very knowlegable in several subjects, and if he doesn't know, he will find out as soon as he can. He is very personable and funny.

Always replied back when I had questions
He gives exam reviews so we can study, and he gives us extra time to turn in homework if we did not understand.
He frequently asks questions to asses our grasp of Linguistical concepts.
He was willing to help out students no matter what especially if they're not doing so well in his class. Personally, I'm doing better than I thought I would be doing, but I can see others struggling and when they ask for help he is willing to do so.

He taught the course well. The material was just confusing and uninteresting.
he took us through step by step and took his time explaining when we didn't understand something. you just needed incredible patience. when it came to presentation, he was often times soft-spoken and it was difficult to make out what he said. his note-taking methods were also a little disorganized.

He knew his material very well. He made it interesting for us students.
He tries really hard to help us understand.
The way that he teaches the course is very open and straight to the point. He uses the time given wisely and doesn't waste any of it. If we didn't understand he would take the time to explain what is being taught.

He's a good teacher but it would be better used elsewhere.
this class had a lot of potential to be really great. i like mr. ota, he's funny and a teacher you wouldn't mind sitting through a whole semester with, but the way he presented his course materials was not engaging at all, sometimes even confusing. so coming to class felt completely unnecessary and a serious bore.

I thought this course was going to be hard, but overall it was pretty easy going. As long as you kept up with the work, you will do fine and pass with at least a A or B.

Always asks if students understand
mr ota showed mad love for his students when he talked to us with som much empathy.
He shows concern through his giving us a second chance to do better in class. If we mess up on a test, we can do corrections, and if he wasnâ??t concerned, he wouldnâ??t constantly remind us of dates for corrections or projects. He genuinely seems to care for how we do in this class; though he doesnâ??t make us stress out about it too much, so he makes it a very enjoyable class.
He helped when asked but that was it. had a bias for certain students. pretty sure he was slightly prejudice but his course and the way he ran his class was effective enough for everyone to learn.

Tian Laoshi allowed us to retake tests if we were unsatisfied with the score. as a language class i beleive that this is a fair practice because language is a constant learning process and not factual memorization.

There was nothing I particularity disliked about the course. Sometimes it was a little difficult to do the character parts on quizzes, since we didnâ??t usually know which ones to study, but otherwise, he taught the course just fine.

This was an amazing course. I was constantly warned that Mandarin was an incredibly difficult language to learn, and it is challenging, but it is far more enjoyable than Iâ??d originally anticipated. Ota Laoshiâ??s teaching method makes the lessons enjoyable to learn, the homework isnâ??t too overbearing, and the tests are, well, tests. Like any language, it is challenging, but unlike any other language class, this one is very enjoyable to take.

Yes. With just 2 classes a week you'll learn a lot and will not get lost in his style of teaching
if you like chinese yeah.
Of course I would. His teaching method is anything but mundane, so all of his lessons are very interesting and involving. He makes learning Mandarin fun, and has made it easier to absorb than if I were learning it by myself. Heâ??s a very dynamic teacher; he is always open for questions, willing to explain about the Chinese culture, and really stretches your mind to make you understand the language.

31. How did the instructor show concern for students?
When I asked the instructor to teach us how to write characters, he wrote them without hesitation.
He goes over homeworks during class. Whenever students don't understand the audio dialogue from the CD, he puts it on in class and explains what the dialogue is. He asks them questions when there is a complex part in the material. When students don't know how to say a certain word he writes it on the board and goes over it.
After every semi long phrase in Mandarin he would ask if everyone understands.
He would answer questions if students do not understand.
32. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I didn't really like that he stops the Chinese music to explains the meaning of the lyrics every time, because it distracts the music.
I liked that he provides examples and repeats the complex materials. He also has videos of the different lessons which was really fun to watch.
I liked that materials not in the book was covered. Also, the constant speaking of Mandarin. It helped me retain and understand when someone is talking in Mandarin.
He talked about his experiences in China and Taiwan, which was interesting. Classes were interesting because he would ask students questions in Chinese and it's linked to what we're learning.

He is a great and funny professor.
A teacher that is very interested in the Chinese language and enjoys talking about his experiences in China.

I think he knows subject really well and the entire atmosphere of class was good, so I recommend other students to take his class.

He always asks if students understand or if there were any questions. When the topic was hard to understand, he spends more time explaining and going over it.
He taught in a way to get everyone involved in each others' lives, creating bonds, etc that will last outside of the classroom. Also reconfirms to ensure questions were answered in an understandable way.

I like that he has a lively spirit and shares some of his experiences. He repeats many things to help us remember.
I liked how he incorporated Chinese culture and history into his course. The oral part of the course (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc) was a big focus during class periods making me much more confident. I think his opportunity is to continue culture / history / current events and especially apply it to the writing in the course. Things like giving us tips on how to remember the writing (for instance, this radical is always associated with water so you have a clue when you see a kanji with this radical).
I liked how he went over past subject material as we moved pretty fast in pace during semester.
Nothing the class was well taught.

I'm interested in translation, so I liked that we spent a lot of time translating the texts to English and learning the best ways to attack the sentences in order to properly understand them. I liked that the instructor doesn't just tell us the answer, but why the answer is the answer.

There was no aspect I thought wasn't valuable. I just think that not enough time is allotted for this course. We did a lot of reading and a little writing, but almost no speaking practice other than reading out loud and occasionally answering questions.

I thought the text was level appropriate and presented new material at a good pace. The instructor sometimes told us amusing stories, speaking at a somewhat natural speed. It's good for listening practice.

These classes really should be 5 days, 6 hours per week. That or there need to be extra 1 credit supplemental classes for things like kanji or speaking or whatever else, so that students who want to do more work with teacher guidance can do it. I studied Japanese at another school where it was 5 days, 6 hours a week, and I never felt like we were rushed or ill prepared for tests. In this class we'd often still be covering the grammar points right up to the test, rushing through them to cover them all.

I thoroughly believe that Ota sensei's explanations were extremely helpful. While it often seemed like side-tracking, I really learned a lot from his blurbs, whether or not I was tested on them.

Feedback from Ota-sensei on all written assignments. He also allows us to submit homework through e-mail to him, which is really convenient.
We got to hear examples that we could relate to.
The grammar and items in language that you can't learn from direct translations and looking things up in the dictionary.
I liked that we used actual newspaper articles as reading materials; it was the sole thing that made me feel as if I was improving in my study of Japanese.
I felt that the most valuable aspects were when we went over our grammar points, however I felt that some of the examples used weren't clear in explaining how these grammar points should be used.
I think the most valuable aspect of the course was that Ota Sensei actually gave us reading material from other resources than just the workbook. That way, the class could see how and what people write instead of some generic story that was written into the book.
He explained very clearly so we could understand. Like, he explained in Japanese then translated in English. His class was easy to understand.

He's very helpful, and easily-approachable. While he is very strict and quick to point out mistakes in grammar, he isn't standoffish about it, and would always happily explain what I had done wrong.

He knows a lot about Japan and culture and linguistics about Japanese language. He shares examples to help us understand the hidden meanings behind some assigned readings.
He goes through and reads your assignments thoroughly and gives helpful feedback.
Well he is definitely peppy. Also, asking him for help outside of class, he was quite helpful. It was also really nice that he recorded an audio file of every article we read. His readings are really crisp and clear, something you sometimes don't get with the book CD. So I really appreciated that, and the videos that were assigned for class. I think we got counted off way too much for not hearing the long "-u" in transcription assignments, but the videos were really interesting.
He is pretty funny, always keeps the class interesting, never a dull moment with him.
Everything that Ota Sensei taught was valuable. During the course of this semester, I was not bored or out of interest once. Ota Sensei teaches in a way were it's very easy to understand and super fun while still learning a great deal about the Japanese language and about Japan itself.
Whenever, we had questions, he was open to ask and helped to understand.

Ota Sensei is by far one of if not the best teacher at UH Manoa. Never have I had so much fun but still learned so much in a class. Also, at first during the beginning of the semester, I was ashamed of my Japanese considering how bad it is and being at a high class level, but throughout the semester I started to feel less ashamed and actually tried to translate what I thought the reading said. Ota Sensei did a great job of correcting me without making me feel as if I did not understand it. Ota Sensei: You are truly a great teacher. I know I asked some silly questions during class (I honestly was curious about what I was asking even if it was silly) but I'm glad that you answered them thoroughly. I know I'm not the best student but I can say that you and your class brought out more of me than any other teacher/class has so far. I wish you the best of luck for the future and don't be surprised if I take another class you might be teaching! :D

learnig new kanji and expresions
Instructor was very willing to explain a lot of things until the students understood, at times providing multiple examples/ways of explaining things (i.e. grammar and vocabulary)
He grades reasonably. He allows you to make mistakes, and helps you along the way. He makes it easy for the class to ask questions. He doesn't just stick to the book--he incorporates his own teaching styles, teaching his students other things that aren't included in the book and brings in outside sources to use in the classroom (youtube videos, real-life stories and examples, etc.)
