13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
The teacher demonstrated his knowledge of the subject. The lectures were easy to follow. And the exams were fair if you went to class.
He explains his best for students to understand a topic.
Gets straight to the point of the subject.
Knows the subject quite well.
He has a relaxed teaching style which makes me relaxed in class so I can pay attention and think without being nervous.
He knows chemistry very well. When student has difficulties understanding a certain concept, he tries his best to explain using a different example.
He knows his stuff, and is receptive to students when they email him with questions.
Never late or canceled a class. Very nice and approachable, he is very friendly and funny. He is always open to helping us when we don't understand what he lectured about. Answers all your questions and if he doesn't know it he will come back the next class with the answer.

I would go over more example problems in each section.

SLOW DOWN WHEN PRESENTING THINGS IN CLASS. Some of the topics you present you blow through super fast! Especially when demonstrating math-like equations.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He spends time after or during class if all his students understand what we are learning. Encourages us to study for exams and homeworks.

I'm not really sure. It was hard to tell.
He allowed for students to take tests in testing center if needed, responded to all emails promptly, gave students study materials based on questions similar to tests, and graded exams quickly.
He offered to help us after class was done. He offered numerous quizzes to help us prepare for the test and bump our grades up. He offers homework that really helps with learning what he lectures. He explains the homework and quizzes to make sure each and every student (who comes to class) understands what is being lectured and makes sure we all know what to expect on the exams.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
I would recommend this class. If you need a Chem 100 class this is the class to take. The class was enjoyable and entertaining.

Yeah, the class is simple, the subject is hard but he put it in a way for us to understand better.

I would. Early on, wasn't so sure about him, but I now think he is an excellent teacher in an early morning class so energy isn't high on either his or the students side. I've learned in his class, even though it's a very challenging subject for me.
YES! I definitely recommend Professor Brayton, he gives you many opportunities to help your grade. He's always there for questions and will make time to fit you into his busy schedule to help you out. His test are difficult but if you study and listen to his lectures and pay attention to the examples of equations he presents in class it totally make sense and the test is an easy A.
yes he is a very easy going teacher the only thing is that you have to show up to class to fully understand the lesson that he teaches

Maybe have quizzes be individual rather than grouped because it allows the student(s) to think for themselves rather than get points for an answer that they didn't contribute to.

If someone has a question, he makes sure that the students fully understands before moving on.

he's young, so he's like a student. I guess he gets us because he's kind of easy going. he's not some hard ass teacher that gives us a lot of work. he's somewhat lenient. he's kind of boring sometimes, but he did some fun stuff like the liquid nitrogen experiment he did in class.

Professor Brayton is very organized and efficient. He provides all his power points and resources on laulima so we have access to what we did in class if we were not able to make it.

He's a fun teacher, and he's young, so he's very understanding. He's also very smart and knows his stuff so when theres any confusion, he can relate the topic to a real life scenario, making chemistry understandable

14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
maybe some extra credit to improve our exam score. he gives those extra credit questions on the exam but those extra credit questions were tough.
Spending more time on the slides, allowing more conversation.
Make longer study guides for more practice. Instead of the online homework give homework assignments because I honestly thought the way he structured his questions on the exams were must different. Also it was hard sometimes to answer problems on the mastering chemistry which became time consuming.

The material, the book was so unrelatable to real life, Daniel Brayton had to scrap some examples given and replace them with things we would actually use in real life.. the fact that he could do this, really helped... but that book needs to go!

Yes, I would recommend other students to him because he's a chill professor. But even if he's chill he knows his chemistry which is a good thing. And also the quizes and tests are really easy. He doesn't give a question on the test that he didn't discuss in class.

he knows he's area. awesome chemistry teacher. very fair
He was very knowledgeable of his subject,
That he knew the subject that he was teaching and relating it to real life things.
Major strengths are breaking down the material step by step. Writing examples on the board then explaining it thoroughly. Also, teaching us how to use the periodic table correctly.
Chemistry is a difficult subject, and Dr. Brayton has a great way of making it easy and enjoyable to understand!

I would suggest to change his teaching style a bit every so often. The lectures can get very repetitive.

When struggling on a problem he would help us better understand it. In addition, he would go over some of the homework problems that we may have difficulty on. Also, gave us study guides and later posted the answers so we can review our work.
He would do his best to give visual examples and apply chemistry to real life. It made everything make more sense.

I think it depends on the person I am recommending him to. His Chem 100 class maybe easy and straightfoward, however I did think he fully prepares students who intend to pursue upper level Chemistry courses.

A method for his course that I found very helpful was to print out the power point slides and have them when you go to class and take notes directly on them that way you wont have to scramble to write everything down.

His major strentghs were he was very knowledgable about chemistry. He answered back promptly to emails. He graded exams fast so you got your grades back fast.

Classes were very boring because he just read off of the power points every class. Even the way he spoke was very monotone and made the class even more boring. I would have to say think of another way to get your students attention more and make learning a little more interesting. I didn't learn anything in that class.
Speak up, Read the powerpoints before class instead of looking at them for the first time WHILE teaching the class. Don't make everything so complicated and don't assume the students "already know" what you're talking about. Also, there was a statement made at the beginning of class that the conversion factors would Maybe allowing a 3x5 card or having a Jeopardy style review would help students to memorize the formulas better. Also, there are no opportunities for extra credit, as well as no homework. Our grade was only based on tests. Some students are bad test takers and it creates more anxiety when your grade is based on only 4 tests.

His communication via email was very good but in class it seemed like he was just going through the lesson and not really paying attention to how the class was reacting to his lectures.

I would not recommend this instructor because chemistry is a tough subject for me and this instructor showed no real interest in making classes more interesting for his students. I had a hard time learning from him because he spoke softly during class and I couldn't really understand anything he was teaching me. I ended up trying to teach myself by reading the book which was why I ended up doing bad in this class.
No, I felt like he was too in depth. This is a basic chemistry class and most are taking it just to satisfy a requirement. I felt like things weren't explained very well.

If you're the type of student who would rather study at home then I would recommend him. The class is mostly based upon lecture which is taken from Laulima. In that case, you don't necessarily have to attend class. It is without consequence if you feel that you can study on your own.

I think he just needs to have a better approach at teaching his students. Many of his students ended up not attending his classes or dropping out of it because he was not a good teacher.
