30. Other comments:
Marina, used her knowledge and course material to facilitate a class ultimately designed by the students. I thought that was pretty clever.
Excellent class! Excellent instructor!
The content is boring and the subject is overzealous in presentation. But the subject is necessary. I find that the professor, though very well meaning, was often disorganized, was in another realm from students, and does not know quite how to develop an exam. But she demonstrates passion for her field and wants others to get the most out of what she can teach. I however, do not have any passion for this field, and this class has made me hate the subject matter.
My overall experience was quite positive. Marina's strong point is her breadth of experience; she is very knowledgable and has good illustrations to share based on real life. One recommended change to the class would be greater interaction (other than discussion). We frequently had hands-on assignments but it would have been immensely helpful to build in an interactive component to each session just to give us more practice in some of the concepts. I did learn a lot from the projects that were incorporated into the class. Mahalo Marina; you did an excellent job and we appreciated your flexibility, sense of humor, and fairness!
Marina was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. The only suggestion I would make is now that the course has been offered once be mindful of assignment changes in the midst of the semester. Although it is fine to move things around consider that graduate students are incredibly busy and it is difficult to change schedules to complete assignments at the last minute. If going to make changes be sure to give ample time. Also, more opportunity for group discussion would be good.
The instructor is new to teaching in the university environment, which caused some hiccups in her process: assignment deadlines and requirements changed at the last minute, instructions could be unclear or not complete, even the syllabus was altered mid-way through. The class took the disruptions in stride, and it was generally a fun course. I took the instructor's adjustment to teaching, and her expectation of our patience, to mean that what mattered most was that we learned something useful, not the ultimate grading policy. However, now that the course is winding down, student deadlines and grades seem to be of the utmost importance. I feel that if the students are expected to be flexible, so should the instructor. The grading should reflect the flux the class has been enduring all semester. The instructor teaches like this is an ungraded workshop, and then imposes a strict grading system. I could do without this rigidity, seeing as how we've all had to be flexible in this class this semester. Overall, it was a useful course, engaging, informative, and fun. I made some wonderful professional contacts. I also worked hard to make my assignments matter to my own work, and the instructor was supportive in this. However, the emphasis on grading and certain educational structures that were initially uneven and haphazard has taken the emphasis off the important content of the course. I wish this had been an extended workshop instead of a course for credit. That being said, I would recommend this instructor and this course, as I'm sure the "bugs" have been worked out.
While the instructor had mastery over the subject matter and provided clear instructions for each assignment that was to be completed, there were several occasions where the dates for the assignments were changed at a moments notice, as well as several occasions where NEW assignments were added to the syllabus without much prior notice.
T thought it was good course! It was the the first time Marina taught this course and it will be even better the next time. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in helping groups make important decisions.
I learned a lot in this course. Marina really knew how to translate her real world experiences as a facilitator into practical exercises that helped us learn. I understand that this is her first time teaching a college-level course, so a few of the assignments and overall structure of the course was vague at times. However, the adjustments made were reasonable.
The syllabus kept changing, and the changes were significant. Many assignments that never even made it onto the syllabus at all were assigned. This included 60 questions and answers to be submitted within one week. Although the Professor was very kind, and lenient about these due dates, it created an unexpected burden. The extra assignments were also useful ones, but should have been on the syllabus. As a result, I was never able to plan more than a week in advance for this class - and the rest of my classes and time management suffered greatly. The class was extended by two extra dates, both during exam period, one a day that is NOT a class day, and both classes count against our attendance grade - I don't believe this is fair at all. Further, this problem arose from the Professor herself cancelling a class, not the University. Finally, the class rarely ended on time and the Professor never announced class was over, and we may leave if necessary. So, students were awkwardly leaving during guest speaker presentations that ran overtime, and even while the Professor herself was speaking. Class needed to end on time, or needed to be acknowledged to be over. I enjoyed the content of this class - but it was very disorganized and created a lot of burdens. Please note, I thought this Professor was a wonderful instructor and I learned a great deal in this class.
She is a wonderful person and has a great deal of knowledge about the field that she seems to want to impart to us in a useful way. However, the constant changes in the schedule and the uncertainty about when an assignment is due and what it entails increased the stress and anxiety level of the class and led to us spending a lot of time negotiating assignments and clarifying administrative necessities as opposed to covering course content.
Marina Piscolish is an extremely talented facilitator and just as good a professor. I felt that I was learning from a true professional and leader in her field. I learned so many things that I have never thought of before, and that says more than I could ever say about most courses I've taken in under/gradaute school. This is not because I think already know so much(not by far), but rather because few courses really push and challenge you and introduce completely novel material as well as this one has. Great course and highly recommended. I would go out of my way to take another course by this professor.
Dr. Piscolish put together a fantastic course. It was clear that she is a leader in her profession (this was not only clear through her teaching but also through the evaluation of her peers, i.e., other professors). The assignments and activities that she planned were very meaningful. She also brought in fantastic guest speakers. I have learned a great deal about what it means to facilitate. The only thing I would change about this course is that I would prefer that the syllabus not change so much in terms of due dates and assignments; however, it is understood that this occurred due to unforeseen circumstances.
