Marina was inspiring and supportive. During this accelerated course, I have learn more than most of my graduate courses. Her attention to detail, efforts to provide feedback, and communication styles was impressive. I appreciated Marina's ability to tailor her experience to her classroom style of teaching. I work for a company that deals with technology. Marina's ability to help her students apply facilitation and conflict resolution skills in all types of diverse environments has been valued by all of her students. We did not want to end the semester. I wish I had took more of Marina's courses through my graduate degree. I graduate this semester, but I will be taking her classes in the future for the mere fact that she is a wonderful instructor. -WP
The class was interesting although maybe a little rushed. I enjoyed the Saturday classes but would like more sessions to practice facilitating. I enjoyed this class and appreciate the work Dr. Piscolish puts into the class.
I loved this class. If Marina taught more courses at the University, I would enroll, no matter what the subject matter. The condensed course was a little rough for me. Although we experienced as much classroom time as a full-semester course, it didn't seem like there was enough time to get everything done in the short time we had. I'm not sure I'd take another condensed course.
This class was extremely useful and I am thankful for all the thought and effort that was put into creating this engaging class.
I thought Marina did a fine job in instructing the course. She's obviously knowledgable. I found it impressive that she is able to teach, articulate, and frame the material, subject matter, and discussions so students are able to easily grasp it. At times, the classes got a little off topic. I'm not sure if that was due to the students in the class or Marina. I also wish that Marina would have responded to my emails. On two occasions, I didnt receive a response.
Would be good if instructor allowed fewer students to take the course so they could each get feedback doing a real life Group Facilitation Prof os smart, passionate has her own ideas about how things need and should be done.
More practice and group work would have been helpful. The course started out great in that way with nice variety of activities and Marina did a great job of explaining rationale or walking us through in a referential way but the course wasn't that engaging for the second half of the course. A more formal ice breaker/team-building exercise might be beneficial to this class given its interactive content. A biweekly meeting schedule during the week so the weekend sessions aren't as long would be preferable for an intensive 8 week course format.
Great course. The things I learned are very practical (for a lot of different contexts) which is refreshing coming from a purely theory-driven field.

All in all, it was a great course that gave me a very good overview of facilitation from a highly experienced practitioner. Marina is extremely knowledgeable and was able to share many of her own experiences and examples with us. The assignments were challenging and stimulating. It would have been helpful to have had even more hands-on practice in both conflict resolution and facilitation skills. For example, it could be worked in in future semesters that each student gets the chance to design and facilitate a short whole-group process, which Marina could observe and then give feedback and suggestions on. Also, we did not need to spend quite as much time talking about the final assignment. The last Saturday class would have been more beneficial if we had spent more time practicing facilitation and covering some of the other topics that we didn't get to on the syllabus (e.g. facilitator ethics, negotiating process details with a client, capacity building). I feel that the course got off to a very strong start, so it's a pity that we weren't able to get to everything that had been planned. However, I definitely learned a great deal about some of the useful tools available for enhancing facilitation, as well as how to design thoughtful agendas and collaborative processes.

It would have been helpful to get more timely feedback. I need to get the first assignment back before the second one is due. This was not the case. Unrealistic amount of assignments. A reflection each week plus all of the other assignments was difficult to keep up with. More visual aids would have been helpful for those of us that are visual learners.
Very enjoyable and engaging class.
Dr. Piscolish is passionate abut what she does, and I think she really inspired the class. I learned a lot in this class and much of the material can be practically applied to my life and my future academic interests.
Fabulous instructor!

+ The course has wonderful applications to many fields and the instructor is extremely knowlegable about the subject matter. - The assignments were constantly changing. New materials were added to Lau Lima the day of class and were expected to be read and understood before class.
Marina, is an excellent teacher and model for CR. She is very helpful and excited about her work. She is respectful of her students and has compassion. The area that needs improvement: I would suggest that all assignments be placed in one area like the assignment box. She put them in no fewer than 4 different places it made it difficult for many students to find them. Few voiced this concern to her. I also appreciate all of the resources available however for a 5 week course there were too many required readings and too many assignments. She did take one assignmet off after a class discussion, which demonstrated her flexiability. Perhaps, she could give all of the material and make a smaller number required. Again, all in all Marina is an excellent teacher. I am glad I was able to learn from her.
This is an extremely useful class. I learned skills that I started using immediately. I will definitely be practicing these skills every day and using the exercises (written and discussion) in my personal and professional life. I didn't find the Linda Lambert book or the Meyer book very useful, especially the Meyer book. And I don't recall us referring to it in a discussion. I guess that particular book would have been more useful if I had some direction in how to use that book. Marina's dedication is really strong and inspiring. I am grateful to have been in this class, and I look forward to practicing more in this area. I have a toolkit that I will keep using and keep developing. Many, many thanks for a fine course. It was definitely worth the time and effort.
Probably one of the most needed courses for a future administrator in the educational field. The innovative ideas, peer mediation, conflict resolution, philosophy for children, could be very well implemented at my school with the appropriate people and resources. This is a course will I keep all my notes handy in the future as conflict management skills will always have a place in my professional/personal life. Chris Cordell
I can't emphasize enough how phenomenal this class was for me as an educator and as an individual. Marina tailored the material to all professional situations and personal relationships, making every single class and assignment stimulating and thought-provoking. I was impressed by her breadth of knowledge and inspired by her passion.
A great class! I really enjoyed learning about collaborative skills and processes and how I could apply these skills to real life experiences. Thank you, Dr. Piscolish!
This was a great class. It was not just theory; rather practical useful information. As a result of this class, I believe that I can improve both my personal and professional life. I would highly recommend Professor Piscolish and her Conflict Resolution Class to my peers.
I really like this course. Dr. Piscolish provided me with excellent perspectives toward dealing with conflicts. Dr. Piscolish was very helpful. She excellently motivated me to via every single class activities, such as classroom activities, exercises, and assignments. Significantly, it helped me recognize my conflict style and improve it toward meeting my goal and maintaining the relationship. I was so excited to say that I have learned the most useful knowledge that I have wished. The manual and reading materials for the class were very useful. I have been trained with excellent skills. After taking this class, I am very confident when dealing with conflicts at work and in daily life. More importantly, Dr. Piscolish motivated me to think of a bigger promising plan in my work life beyond assignments or classroom activities. As an international student, I really liked the ways Dr. Piscolish taught and motivated not only me but also my classmates. I found her class as 'Ohana' which I was very eager to be with everyday. I must say that Dr. Piscolish gave me useful knowledge, excellent skills, and strong motivation! This class helps bring positive changes in my life. I am so excited to look forward to seeing it.
I really enjoyed the course and Marina was able to make a 3 hour course two nights a week go by fast (compliment!). One thing I would have liked to do is practice conflict resolution skills in class through situations more often. I know there has to be some academic stuff and that is fine, but less academics and more practice would be great. Marina is obviously a real professional in her field and has so much value to add to those who take the course and I think this value would be even greater if the students walked away with even more practice with the skills that Marina is an expert in. The textbook by Mayer was just okay. Good read and all, but I felt like I got more out of Marina's booklet, journal articles and class discussions. Mayer's book would be a good read to further interest in the overall conflict resolution field. Perhaps a book that covers the material of Marina's booklet with more depth would be better...if such a book exists. I do feel more confident in my ability to handle conflict and gained a lot of valuable knowledge and skills from this course!

30. Other comments:
Marina, used her knowledge and course material to facilitate a class ultimately designed by the students. I thought that was pretty clever.
T thought it was good course! It was the the first time Marina taught this course and it will be even better the next time. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in helping groups make important decisions.
I learned a lot in this course. Marina really knew how to translate her real world experiences as a facilitator into practical exercises that helped us learn. I understand that this is her first time teaching a college-level course, so a few of the assignments and overall structure of the course was vague at times. However, the adjustments made were reasonable.
My overall experience was quite positive. Marina's strong point is her breadth of experience; she is very knowledgable and has good illustrations to share based on real life. One recommended change to the class would be greater interaction (other than discussion). We frequently had hands-on assignments but it would have been immensely helpful to build in an interactive component to each session just to give us more practice in some of the concepts. I did learn a lot from the projects that were incorporated into the class. Mahalo Marina; you did an excellent job and we appreciated your flexibility, sense of humor, and fairness!
While the instructor had mastery over the subject matter and provided clear instructions for each assignment that was to be completed, there were several occasions where the dates for the assignments were changed at a moments notice, as well as several occasions where NEW assignments were added to the syllabus without much prior notice.
Excellent class! Excellent instructor!
The syllabus kept changing, and the changes were significant. Many assignments that never even made it onto the syllabus at all were assigned. This included 60 questions and answers to be submitted within one week. Although the Professor was very kind, and lenient about these due dates, it created an unexpected burden. The extra assignments were also useful ones, but should have been on the syllabus. As a result, I was never able to plan more than a week in advance for this class - and the rest of my classes and time management suffered greatly. The class was extended by two extra dates, both during exam period, one a day that is NOT a class day, and both classes count against our attendance grade - I don't believe this is fair at all. Further, this problem arose from the Professor herself cancelling a class, not the University. Finally, the class rarely ended on time and the Professor never announced class was over, and we may leave if necessary. So, students were awkwardly leaving during guest speaker presentations that ran overtime, and even while the Professor herself was speaking. Class needed to end on time, or needed to be acknowledged to be over. I enjoyed the content of this class - but it was very disorganized and created a lot of burdens. Please note, I thought this Professor was a wonderful instructor and I learned a great deal in this class.
The content is boring and the subject is overzealous in presentation. But the subject is necessary. I find that the professor, though very well meaning, was often disorganized, was in another realm from students, and does not know quite how to develop an exam. But she demonstrates passion for her field and wants others to get the most out of what she can teach. I however, do not have any passion for this field, and this class has made me hate the subject matter.
She is a wonderful person and has a great deal of knowledge about the field that she seems to want to impart to us in a useful way. However, the constant changes in the schedule and the uncertainty about when an assignment is due and what it entails increased the stress and anxiety level of the class and led to us spending a lot of time negotiating assignments and clarifying administrative necessities as opposed to covering course content.
Marina was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. The only suggestion I would make is now that the course has been offered once be mindful of assignment changes in the midst of the semester. Although it is fine to move things around consider that graduate students are incredibly busy and it is difficult to change schedules to complete assignments at the last minute. If going to make changes be sure to give ample time. Also, more opportunity for group discussion would be good.
The instructor is new to teaching in the university environment, which caused some hiccups in her process: assignment deadlines and requirements changed at the last minute, instructions could be unclear or not complete, even the syllabus was altered mid-way through. The class took the disruptions in stride, and it was generally a fun course. I took the instructor's adjustment to teaching, and her expectation of our patience, to mean that what mattered most was that we learned something useful, not the ultimate grading policy. However, now that the course is winding down, student deadlines and grades seem to be of the utmost importance. I feel that if the students are expected to be flexible, so should the instructor. The grading should reflect the flux the class has been enduring all semester. The instructor teaches like this is an ungraded workshop, and then imposes a strict grading system. I could do without this rigidity, seeing as how we've all had to be flexible in this class this semester. Overall, it was a useful course, engaging, informative, and fun. I made some wonderful professional contacts. I also worked hard to make my assignments matter to my own work, and the instructor was supportive in this. However, the emphasis on grading and certain educational structures that were initially uneven and haphazard has taken the emphasis off the important content of the course. I wish this had been an extended workshop instead of a course for credit. That being said, I would recommend this instructor and this course, as I'm sure the "bugs" have been worked out.
Marina Piscolish is an extremely talented facilitator and just as good a professor. I felt that I was learning from a true professional and leader in her field. I learned so many things that I have never thought of before, and that says more than I could ever say about most courses I've taken in under/gradaute school. This is not because I think already know so much(not by far), but rather because few courses really push and challenge you and introduce completely novel material as well as this one has. Great course and highly recommended. I would go out of my way to take another course by this professor.
Dr. Piscolish put together a fantastic course. It was clear that she is a leader in her profession (this was not only clear through her teaching but also through the evaluation of her peers, i.e., other professors). The assignments and activities that she planned were very meaningful. She also brought in fantastic guest speakers. I have learned a great deal about what it means to facilitate. The only thing I would change about this course is that I would prefer that the syllabus not change so much in terms of due dates and assignments; however, it is understood that this occurred due to unforeseen circumstances.

38. Other comments:
Way too much reading was assigned in this class. The readings did not relate to much of the course content. It was unreasonable to expect students to read an entire book in one day. The instructor changed the syllabus in the middle of the semester which contained even more work for the class; good for the student. More organization on the syllabus would have been appreciated.
Marina Piscolish is an excellent professor. She is knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging. I would definitely recommend her and the conflict management course to other students.
Marina is a seasoned professional in the area of Conflict Management and brought real-world knowledge and wisdom to share in the course.
I highly recommend this course for students in the education world as well as the business world. I am suprised that this class is not mandatory for more undergraduate as well as graduate class. Thank you for all the valuable input for my field as well as life lesson that are applicable every day.
Dr. Piscolish explained the material well and gave relevant examples. She commanded the attention of the class and also encouraged participation that allowed students a chance to see another view/opinion. She was also willing to help students outside of class hours. My only suggestion would be to release course materials, such as readings, earlier to allow students adequate time to thoroughly review them before class.
I think that conflict resolution skills should become embedded in all levels of education here at UHM.
Marina was an excellent teacher and provided great details on how to use conflict resolution skills effectively. She has changed my beliefs about conflict and I will now face situations rather than avoid them. I have a few suggestions for the course to make it better and more valuable to students, please don't take these as criticisms, but as suggestions for improvement for the student experience. 1) Reading an entire book in two days is very hard to digest. Maybe spread it out more or have each student take a chapter and explain what they learned to the class? 2) Many of the readings were never discussed fully in the class. I had some great quotes to share from the Harmony book. but there never seemed the opportunity to discuss what we had learned from the book. We would go off in interesting tangents, but never get back to the reading. Then, the one time we really discussed readings was the articles that were sent, but they were sent the day of class, so no time to read them before class. 3) I loved when we got to try out the scenarios and talk about them with each other. I would have preferred more of those to break up the 3-1/2 hour class. Sometimes, Marina, would talk for over 1-1/2 hours without stopping. This is really hard for those of us with attention issues. I would have loved to try more scenarios or skits to see how to practice the I-messages. 4) The final paper was an excellent idea, but the tips and suggestions came so late in the game. I would have preferred to know about the paper more in detail early on to help really think through it and work together more on it than just one hour on the last day before it was due. 5) Finally, to end on a good note. The papers and assignments given were very valuable, real world and really helped me to learn more about conflict resolution. This class gave me way more information than I thought I would receive. It was well worth the investment in tuition and Marina is an excellent instructor. My ideas above are just suggestions to make the class even better. Thanks again for a great class!
This is by far the best course I have ever taken, it has completely revolutionized my classroom management in a wonderful way. I think every student, not just teachers, should take this course. Marina is an excellent teacher who brings real world application to the classroom. I can't say enough great things about this course!
There was alot to learn, and a six-week course doesn't seem like enough time. Dr. Piscolish is a very passionate, interesting instructor. I wish her course could be taught during the regular semester so there could be more time to absorb, practice, and discuss. She adjusted the syllabus to accommodate the students' work/life demands.
This course is very useful. Excellent !
