Learning how people react to policies.
learning how important controlling this problem is
The case study of Beijing was most interesting. It gave me hope! Our solutions work, but we just need to be able control behavior for just this situation of Ozone.
The most valuable aspect of the course was relating everything to real world case studies. This gave insight on how to look at air pollution problems from and relate it to real world situations and come up with realistic solutions.
Great instructor! Great class! Amazing dense lectures, very rigorous but doable. Very interesting material. Excellent pedagogic techniques with lots of interactivity and critical thinking. Learned a lot! Interesting field trips and guest lectures.
The real world senarios integrated into the course, especially I ally the very relevant issues that we happening even herror in hawaii.

20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
N/A
the memo formats were hard for me to grasps, but effective on getting points across
Overall, Professor Eisinger taught the course very well. His knowledge of the subject is at an expert level. I would like to see more material on subjects that an individual person can do to lower their emissions. Like not eating beef for a week.
Hard to say, pretty awesome already.
The reading material was organized in a slightly confusing matter, and I wish he posted most of the class handouts online instead.
There isn't anything I can think of that he needs to do to improve to course.
Sometimes he would ask rhetorical questions that no one answered and it seemed to slow the class down a little.
21. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Should be the standard for professors.

Professor was always early and prepared and stuck to the syllabus.

20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The use of so much paper is ironic for an environmentally-focused course. Having readings online with an option for paper versions would be better or printing on scrap paper :)
I think it is great as is. One thing might be to delve deeper into how economic incentive/disincentives, and money as a whole, influence the policy and drive solutions to air pollution problems (re behavioral as well as technological approaches).
Group projects are especially terrible during the summer. I would have done a much better job if I worked solo.
21. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I really enjoyed Doug Eisinger's passion and expertise on the subject matter. He is very personable and easy to listen to. Doug exemplifies what it means to be a professor. I will always remember this course as one of my favorite courses I have had at UHM.
Doug is a well-organized, enthusiastic, engaging instructor who provides just the right amount of technical material and makes sure to make us think how it applies to the real world. This could have been a boring subject, but Doug makes it relevant and up-to-date. It helps greatly that he is a working professional in the field and can explain how political realities affect the policies.

A+
26. Other comments:
Keep up the great work! I'm sorry the attendance was so poor, the students who were consistently tardy or absent missed out on learning from a great professor/mentor. Also, thank you for always asking the guest speakers about their view on the job market and what it is that us as students entering the job market should expect. Again thank you for taking the time to teach this course.

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The amount and diversity of guest speakers brought to the class was a great addition. However, the fact that professor Eisinger didn't really heavily on PowerPoint presentations I felt was the best part. I have hardly had professors that lecture this way and I wish more did. Not only does it required you to come to class but having a professor actually go through the material with you on the board really helps me absorb the information.
Memo writing in preparation for the final memo made the assignments have a cumulative effect in information and writing. Questions always raised to the class made analytical thinking an active part of learning. Guest speakers from various important parts relative to class content was extremely interesting. Being judged by politicians and experienced career workers in related fields was a good experience. Their feedback was helpful and motivating.
I believe that it is important to understand government and policy, and how decisions in government are made. I thought the discussion on conflicts of politics and science were useful and interesting.
practical application of readings into memo writings
using the concepts we learned in t areal world setting
The case studies involving Diesel and Beijing air pollution
Course structure
Discussions of case studies
Professor Eisinger showed real enthusiasm in the subject and also displayed and provided many outside resources for career and internship opportunities. Would definitely recommend this class to other environmental studies or geography major students!
The memo assignments and the vast amount of information given to the class was helpful in deepening my understanding of the concepts.
The overview of how policy interacts with science. Also, it challenges your writing skills to be acceptable in a real world, professional setting. Finally, I enjoyed the variety of guest speakers. At some times I felt as if they were not focusing or presenting the content to the instructors expectations.

Perhaps the paper and presentation due date could be offset a little.
Create a clear rubric, and from day one explain what you expect from the students. Explain what is being looked for in a paper. Clarify grading, and explain grading methods.

better to understand his experience in the EPA
Probably for big group projects. Put students in groups early when class start. I think that this will help build a better rapport for when they work on the final project.
He is great
field trips
I believe if Professor Eisinger could fit one more quiz or exam into the tight schedule to further review some of the topics and concepts discussed, that would be beneficial.
Maybe incorporate even more examples of air pollution in Hawaii. Maybe a guest speaker who can give a more in depth discussion about VOG.

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Even though this class was completed in a short time, I learned a lot and deepened my interest in atmospheric pollution.
Learning both the policy-making and science of air pollution problems.
Urban Air pollution, and controls.
The whole course was valuable!!! I definitely learned a LOT.
I think one of the most valuable aspect is the way in which the material is taught. Dr. Eisinger emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and analysis which is paramount in forming a good case or argument for or against something. Not only do we learn a great deal about the subject itself, but we also learn a wide variety of other skills such as risk analysis, problem approach, and critical thought; all of which can be applied to many other fields, regardless of how unrelated they may be. Another valuable aspect of this course is that we learn how to think about these issues not only in the local, but also in the transnational context. We were presented with many real-world case-studies from all around the world which served to enhance our overall learning experience of the subject.
seeing daily info, and up to date problemsgoing on in our world. what impacts we have globally
I really enjoyed the class discussions where we would divide into groups. It helped me to further the information that we have learned in class and apply it to real world problems. I think that dividing up into smaller groups encourages students to talk because it is less intimidating that talking out while the whole class is having a discussion.
Everything we talked about applies to everyday life (we all breathe air)
relating the course material to current events and learning how to relate past policies to future dilemmas with climate change.
Everything was very interesting

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
better instructions on how to write memos and perhaps a grading rubric. Eisinger often took off points for things he had not explained were required.
Great teacher and lectures.
adding more materials on climate change.
... this course was awesome.
Coolest teacher I've had so far in my college career.
While Dr. Eisinger did an exceptional job at teaching this course, my only recommendation would be to better utilize available technologies such as the various Laulima software modules in order to facilitate online discussion, assignment submission, announcements, and other tools to make the materials more accessible (HW instructions, syllabus, etc.).
lesson the load of work, it was way to overwhelmin for a student. I understand that it was a fast course but he could have lesson the work load. I feel that this course should be more about understanding concepts and real impacts, then being able to graduate as an english major.
Try to make it a little more interesting.
More time to work on group projects in class
I would have loved to learn more about climate relating to Hawaii.
I think the course is great, its hard to suggest anything else, everything was interesting and I always wanted to know more.
24. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Fantastic! I wish I could take more classes from him.
Really great teacher and insightful lectures. Homeworks and projects fitted perfectly with the lectures, all linking to important key concepts.
good professor that shows a lot of knowledge, passion, and motivation about the topic.
he is well organized and earnest. he teaching method is interesting and covers a lot of pertinent topics. He is friendly and honest to students. He is a good professor.
Awesome teacher. Approachable. Knowledgeable. Really challenged me to think. Respectable. Super nice guy but Definitely not an easy grader, still learned a lot regardless!!!
Very good professor. Very organized, fair, and helpful professor.
Dr. Eisinger taught this course with outstanding professionalism (actually one of the best I've seen here at UH) and exceptional enthusiasm. He is a very effective communicator who knows how to engage students in critical discussion of the subject matter. An outline was given at the beginning of each discussion in order to paint the roadmap of what was to be covered, which I thought was very helpful. I wish more of my professors here at the university could communicate as effectively and enthusiastically as Dr. Eisinger does... Seriously a very impressive teaching of the material. It is clear the Dr. Eisinger has mastered the art of instruction.
he has knowledge on this topic for miles, hes a very upbeat personallity and strict with due dates, which is great for a prof, but he should be understanding if there was a personal problem, or sensative family issue.
I really enjoyed Dr. Eisinger as a professor. He made the class very interesting and enjoyable to learn. I liked the fact that he wrote everything down on a chalkboard and interacting with the information that he was providing rather than mindlessly reading off powerpoint slides. This engaged the students and stimulated them to constantly write notes instead of dozing off looking at slides.
great professor!
Awesome
Professor Eisinger is a great professor who seems to genuinely care for his students and their success.
I think that even though Doug is not a full-time professor, he does an amazing job teaching this atmospheric pollution class. I would recommend this class to anyone whether they are an environmental studies major or not. I learned a lot of real world issues that I believe everyone should know.

29. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Wonderful!
Great class overall
Excellent.
Awesome course. Learned tons. I would definitely recommend to other students!!!
This course is very interesting and a little challenging but nothing no one can handle.
Great!
Take it because you learn a lot but not if you are a full time student or have a job
I highly recommend this course to students, both environmental studies and general majors. This course gives an overview of what types of air pollution problems that Hawaii, the U.S., and the world faced in the past, present, and future.
Good
The course was very interesting. However, some sections seemed a little repetitive. I think the group projects would be more interesting if each group focused on a different case study, or possibly a different control that China put into place to determine which was more effective? Nonetheless, I enjoyed the course and the professor!
great course. one of the most influential courses I have ever taken.
30. Other comments:
Please be more clear about what you want in memos. This was the first time I have written that way and found it very difficult to take a lot of information and hope that what I saw was important was also what you saw as important.
Keep it up, and keep improving it even more.
Dear Professor Eisinger thank you!
this class takes a lot of your time, not for the weak.............. overall I think Doug is the perfect person to teach this because he is very passionate about this topic, and gets you to understand whats going on in the world. thanks again prof Eisinger :)

I really respect Doug for all that he knows in relation to air pollution. I have a completely different view on subjects related to air pollution after taking this course. Doug has kept the class very interesting and always tries to have class engagement. I really like the class involvement because it gives me an idea if i am understand the material correctly. Doug is a great professor!

22. What changes would you make in the readings?
the assigned reading could have been done in two days than returned the book, the course reader was helpful to understand different problems around the country and world
There were so many different readings that often were never covered in class. I think most students stopped doing the readings once they learned they were mostly for personal edification.
N/A
It was a very heavy reading course, so maybe having material avaiable prior to class starting to get a head start. Found it hard to keep up and i read a lot.
I can't think of any changes.
Less!
Some of the readings were too long. I liked the shorter ones, more precise
more articles about health effects on towns and local populations around the world to give a "closer to home" feel rather than focusing mainly on beijing
Less reading or more that would pertain to Hawaii since i don't live in California
23. My overall evaluation of this course is...
instead of having a final exam switch the presentation into the last assignment; course assignments are also heavily weighed and grading is tough even when students get the main points, it still isn't what the professor expects. overall doug motivates students and makes lectures interesting. the 5 week course is excellent, however maybe make it a MWF class for 2 hours instead of having to drive to Manoa every day. learned alot in class, thanks
A thoroughly enjoyable summer course!
Important real world issues broken down in an easy to digest way.
Excellent class.
It's a good course. Perhaps a little more organization when writing on the board will do. Maybe lectures/powerpoint slides should be printed and handed out so it would be easy for students to follow lectures and leave extra space on lectures for students to write additional notes. Overall, it was a good performance by the instructor.
Great. One of my best classes to date. Interesting and fun. Only problem is heavy reading load, especially since many of us have other classes and obligations.
A little too idealistic. Although this is designated as a social studies course, it glazed over social consequences of control methods and costs. Writing assignments sometimes were not explained thoroughly and end group project had too many people to be effective.
Great course, I would recommend it to others for sure. Gave me a new outlook on how I view air quality and climate change :)
interesting material and i learned a lot
beneficial
Excellent course taught in a relevant way! Thanks
this class is a pretty good class. however my only recommendation is to have class 4 times a week for 2 and not on Friday since that's when traffic is bad for people that live far. also i think the project should either take the place of the final or the project be given to us earlier in the course.
It was interesting, however im sure all the other students as well as me had at least one or two other summer classes, along with work, there was almost too much to complete in such a short time. Id say spend more time focusing on the main ideas rather than overloading the students with more than enough information. Overall it was a good course, and Doug is a very good professor.
