12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Professor Eisinger showed real enthusiasm in the subject and also displayed and provided many outside resources for career and internship opportunities. Would definitely recommend this class to other environmental studies or geography major students!
practical application of readings into memo writings
The overview of how policy interacts with science. Also, it challenges your writing skills to be acceptable in a real world, professional setting. Finally, I enjoyed the variety of guest speakers. At some times I felt as if they were not focusing or presenting the content to the instructors expectations.
The memo assignments and the vast amount of information given to the class was helpful in deepening my understanding of the concepts.
I believe that it is important to understand government and policy, and how decisions in government are made. I thought the discussion on conflicts of politics and science were useful and interesting.
Memo writing in preparation for the final memo made the assignments have a cumulative effect in information and writing. Questions always raised to the class made analytical thinking an active part of learning. Guest speakers from various important parts relative to class content was extremely interesting. Being judged by politicians and experienced career workers in related fields was a good experience. Their feedback was helpful and motivating.
using the concepts we learned in t areal world setting
Course structure
The amount and diversity of guest speakers brought to the class was a great addition. However, the fact that professor Eisinger didn't really heavily on PowerPoint presentations I felt was the best part. I have hardly had professors that lecture this way and I wish more did. Not only does it required you to come to class but having a professor actually go through the material with you on the board really helps me absorb the information.

20. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
field trips
Grading expectations are unrealistic for summer course
Maybe incorporate even more examples of air pollution in Hawaii. Maybe a guest speaker who can give a more in depth discussion about VOG.
I believe if Professor Eisinger could fit one more quiz or exam into the tight schedule to further review some of the topics and concepts discussed, that would be beneficial.
Create a clear rubric, and from day one explain what you expect from the students. Explain what is being looked for in a paper. Clarify grading, and explain grading methods.
Perhaps the paper and presentation due date could be offset a little.
better to understand his experience in the EPA
Probably for big group projects. Put students in groups early when class start. I think that this will help build a better rapport for when they work on the final project.
He is great
21. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
9/10 exceeded my expectations
Enthusiastic about subject material, but may be inflexible for teaching a summer course. Highly valuable to environmental science students as a former member of EPA, although this could have been more of a focus to benefit students interested in exploring environmental career paths.
A very well organized class. A lot of goo information for students.
he is an approachable professor that is very knowledgeable on the topics presented in class. He was able to challenge the class to think, but also answered any questions that came up.
Doug is extremely knowledgeable, and has a strong passion for his subject. He is without a doubt an expert in his field, and genuinely enjoys talking about air pollution. Doug works with air pollution every day, and probably thinks about it 365 days out of the year. They say, however, that the man with a hammer in his hands sees the whole world as nails, and I believe that because Doug exclusively works with air pollution, he sees everything as an air pollution problem. Sometimes I think that a broader discussion is required to truly understand the complexities of situations, and a lot of times Doug tends to oversimplify issues.
Professor Eisinger is clearly involved in the class content material. His material and class exercises were clearly objective. He juggled the class well with varied forms of learning.
he is very intelligent
Highly recommended professor.
Highly impressive. He brings real-world, real-time situations into the classroom. He has a wide breath of people to expose his students to, and he has able to have a lasting edicational impact on students for a summer program.
Great and resourceful professor, great class

25. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Very satisfying course!
Great class, very informative. Grading is overly meticulous/unrealistic expectations with such large/difficult assignments due every week in an extremely compacted class (class is even shorter than reg. summer classes). Many students felt stress of assignments took away from the valuable learning a summer class is meant to provide, no relaxed class environment that would've provided better discussion.
that I deepened my understanding of the somewhat familiar topics and was challenged by the difficulty of the course and its assignments.
This class teaches a lot about air pollution, and air quality. If you're going into the field of air pollution I think this class would very useful, and interesting to you. Personally I had difficulties with this class, because it required me to throw everything that I knew out the window. As a Geography and sociology student, it was very difficult for me to analyze things from purely an air pollution stand point. There were some conflicting arguments, and things that I learned from classes like GEOG 151 and GEOG 302 were challenged. Also memo writing for me was extremely difficult, because in every other class you're required to write in a certain way, however, what Doug wants is entirely different. What exactly is being looked for in the memos should be made clearer. Overall I think the class was alright, but a clearer understanding of class expectations should be presented to the students. I believe that performance could be improved if clearer goals were set.
Atmospheric Pollution should be required for everyone to take.
tough but fair
Great course.
Outstanding! I am glad I took it, esecpailly since it is only offered during the summer.
Great course
26. Other comments:
As a student, I feel genuinely appreciative of the efforts made by Professor Eisinger.
the grading for this course is tough considering it is a summer class. he expects a lot from the students

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
relating the course material to current events and learning how to relate past policies to future dilemmas with climate change.
Learning both the policy-making and science of air pollution problems.
Everything we talked about applies to everyday life (we all breathe air)
Even though this class was completed in a short time, I learned a lot and deepened my interest in atmospheric pollution.
Urban Air pollution, and controls.
I think one of the most valuable aspect is the way in which the material is taught. Dr. Eisinger emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and analysis which is paramount in forming a good case or argument for or against something. Not only do we learn a great deal about the subject itself, but we also learn a wide variety of other skills such as risk analysis, problem approach, and critical thought; all of which can be applied to many other fields, regardless of how unrelated they may be. Another valuable aspect of this course is that we learn how to think about these issues not only in the local, but also in the transnational context. We were presented with many real-world case-studies from all around the world which served to enhance our overall learning experience of the subject.
I really enjoyed the class discussions where we would divide into groups. It helped me to further the information that we have learned in class and apply it to real world problems. I think that dividing up into smaller groups encourages students to talk because it is less intimidating that talking out while the whole class is having a discussion.
The whole course was valuable!!! I definitely learned a LOT.
seeing daily info, and up to date problemsgoing on in our world. what impacts we have globally
Everything was very interesting

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I would have loved to learn more about climate relating to Hawaii.
Coolest teacher I've had so far in my college career.
More time to work on group projects in class
Try to make it a little more interesting.
Great teacher and lectures.
better instructions on how to write memos and perhaps a grading rubric. Eisinger often took off points for things he had not explained were required.
adding more materials on climate change.
While Dr. Eisinger did an exceptional job at teaching this course, my only recommendation would be to better utilize available technologies such as the various Laulima software modules in order to facilitate online discussion, assignment submission, announcements, and other tools to make the materials more accessible (HW instructions, syllabus, etc.).
... this course was awesome.
lesson the load of work, it was way to overwhelmin for a student. I understand that it was a fast course but he could have lesson the work load. I feel that this course should be more about understanding concepts and real impacts, then being able to graduate as an english major.
I think the course is great, its hard to suggest anything else, everything was interesting and I always wanted to know more.
24. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Professor Eisinger is a great professor who seems to genuinely care for his students and their success.
Very good professor. Very organized, fair, and helpful professor.
good professor that shows a lot of knowledge, passion, and motivation about the topic.
Awesome
Really great teacher and insightful lectures. Homeworks and projects fitted perfectly with the lectures, all linking to important key concepts.
Fantastic! I wish I could take more classes from him.
great professor!
he is well organized and earnest. he teaching method is interesting and covers a lot of pertinent topics. He is friendly and honest to students. He is a good professor.
Dr. Eisinger taught this course with outstanding professionalism (actually one of the best I've seen here at UH) and exceptional enthusiasm. He is a very effective communicator who knows how to engage students in critical discussion of the subject matter. An outline was given at the beginning of each discussion in order to paint the roadmap of what was to be covered, which I thought was very helpful. I wish more of my professors here at the university could communicate as effectively and enthusiastically as Dr. Eisinger does... Seriously a very impressive teaching of the material. It is clear the Dr. Eisinger has mastered the art of instruction.
I really enjoyed Dr. Eisinger as a professor. He made the class very interesting and enjoyable to learn. I liked the fact that he wrote everything down on a chalkboard and interacting with the information that he was providing rather than mindlessly reading off powerpoint slides. This engaged the students and stimulated them to constantly write notes instead of dozing off looking at slides.
Awesome teacher. Approachable. Knowledgeable. Really challenged me to think. Respectable. Super nice guy but Definitely not an easy grader, still learned a lot regardless!!!
he has knowledge on this topic for miles, hes a very upbeat personallity and strict with due dates, which is great for a prof, but he should be understanding if there was a personal problem, or sensative family issue.
I think that even though Doug is not a full-time professor, he does an amazing job teaching this atmospheric pollution class. I would recommend this class to anyone whether they are an environmental studies major or not. I learned a lot of real world issues that I believe everyone should know.

29. My overall evaluation of this course is...
The course was very interesting. However, some sections seemed a little repetitive. I think the group projects would be more interesting if each group focused on a different case study, or possibly a different control that China put into place to determine which was more effective? Nonetheless, I enjoyed the course and the professor!
This course is very interesting and a little challenging but nothing no one can handle.
Good
Great class overall
Wonderful!
Excellent.
Great!
I highly recommend this course to students, both environmental studies and general majors. This course gives an overview of what types of air pollution problems that Hawaii, the U.S., and the world faced in the past, present, and future.
Awesome course. Learned tons. I would definitely recommend to other students!!!
Take it because you learn a lot but not if you are a full time student or have a job
great course. one of the most influential courses I have ever taken.

Please be more clear about what you want in memos. This was the first time I have written that way and found it very difficult to take a lot of information and hope that what I saw was important was also what you saw as important.
Keep it up, and keep improving it even more.
Dear Professor Eisinger thank you!
this class takes a lot of your time, not for the weak.............. overall I think Doug is the perfect person to teach this because he is very passionate about this topic, and gets you to understand whats going on in the world. thanks again prof Eisinger :)
I really respect Doug for all that he knows in relation to air pollution. I have a completely different view on subjects related to air pollution after taking this course. Doug has kept the class very interesting and always tries to have class engagement. I really like the class involvement because it gives me an idea if i am understand the material correctly. Doug is a great professor!
