16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
- Understand the way Japanese are doing marketing - Improve my marketing knowledge to work with Japanese in the future.
approachable
His ability to share his personal experiences with the class. I really enjoyed just listening to him speak about his personal and professional life.
Various case studies on Japanese corporations
He clearly had lots of past experience with Japanese companies and also with other international business people and was able to share many great examples. I gained a lot of knowledge of why Japan does marketing the way it does because it its past. The kaizen style of improving on presentations through practice and class feedback was new and seemed effective. The powerpoint presentations were also very good aides.
The man knows what he is doing and he definetly has traveled around the world.
I found Professor Kotabe's experience in various countries and his ability to connect Japanese marketing to other cultures and regions of the world very interesting.
Great experience in the industry and insider knowledge. Wish the class was longer so he could elaborate more on topics.
I liked the lectures and case discussions
17. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?

This question is bad. 2500 word limit and I am suppose to come up with two or three words? He is not a product.
interesting and informative professor
Experienced, helpfu.

18. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Excellent
He is a great professor and I wish that more professors at UH were like him. He is willing to share his experiences with the class and welcomes feedback from students on a regular basis which is very refreshing.
worldly, wise, fascinating
A very effective instructor given the time that we had. I wish we would have had more time so that we could have gone into more detail about Japanese marketing. Professor Kotabe was well prepared and engaging and the class was enjoyable!
The lecture material and handouts were informative. The main issues with the course is that it is too short at three weeks. Instead of being a core JEMBA course it should be relabed as "consulting" because at its core the case study is a consulting report. The other issue is that due to the shortness of the course other programs (non-FT) join the course in search of a quick grade. This causes a misalignment of goals. There is no peer-review of the main case project. The group members have no way to inform Dr. Kotabe of how group members performed. Since the final report is the majority of the grade, I found it very frustrating to work four 14 hour days for three weeks just to have team members go to SWAP meets, golfing, or watch TV and not do their job. Quite frankly I have been shocked with grad students behavior during his course. I have to have an A in mareketing courses because my future job involves it but I feel I may have failed the course due to other teammembers copy and pasting thier report material with no way to force them to do work. Overall it was a frustrating course, not necessary because of Kotabe but the lack of accountablity controls in the course. Also the final exam was excluded because he felt students had learned enough from the lecture. This allowed those students who did not read or prepare for class off the hook which led to major disagreements in group work. I find it quite frustrating to work so hard and yet have classmates brag about doing absoluting nothing and bullshiting their way through the course and yet probably getting the same grade.
Although the class was short, I enjoyed it very much. I learned a lot from the many examples presented in class, case studies, and various readings. I would have liked, however, to have been presented with a few very recent examples or cases dealing with Japan. Thank you very much for your instruction!
Pretty good course, learned a lot and enjoyed it. Didn't really like the feedback process, as student input was too heavily integrated into our evaluations and often the feedback was inconsistent, confusing, and I don't think it should have affected our grades. Professor feedback was better, but sometimes confusing. I question whether the professor was always engaged in our presentations, which is a little disheartening after all the work that we put into them.
He is a great professor but I felt that his ideas about Japan were someout out dated. Younger generation in Japan are shifting away from high price = high quality.
