23. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| She always asked those who didn't understand to stay after class so she can help them. |
| by making herself available after class for help and extra assistance |
| Really helpful. She extended her arms to outside of the class. |
| she gives us time after class to help us if we dont know the subject matter. |
| She always suggests extra time after class to work with her step by step to understand something. |
| She tells the students to see her in her office if they need help with the
homework outside of class. She will explain things over and over until the
material is understood by the class. |
| She listened to questions before and after class. |
| She shows concern by understanding that most students have lives outside of college and learns to make time and not pack students down with homework like most teachers will. She likes to cover material and keep reviewing until we understand it. |
| she gave us ample time to complete assignments, study for exams, etc. making sure we understand
the material being covered. she would rather we proceed slowly and understand the lesson, than
follow a strict schedule regardless. |
| The instructor showed concern by helping students with assignments. If a student was struggling
she would create time for students. She wants to help students out by making sure the subject
matter is fully absorbed. |
|
|
24. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
|
| Everything. She is a fun teacher! |
| I liked everything |
| she lets us watch videos and gives us papers to help us understand more about japanese. |
| She always built up towards something and didn't expect you to understand it right away. She
always took her time with you and didn't go faster than the learning curve of the class as a whole. |
| I liked watching the DVDs. They were all in a foreign language, but they were
fun to watch. |
| I like that she makes us speak during class. |
| i loved the way she would make us do a lot of speaking because i wasnt very good at speaking as i was in reading and writing, also encouraging us to sign up for the international scholarships. |
| i liked how she gave clear examples to show when to use certain sentence structures, and so forth.
it helped better understand the lesson explained in the textbook. |
| She grades extremely well. The class alone is a very hard class for someone like me who never took
a language class. She grades test well making sure that everyone passes. She gives a chance for
error and allows students to make corrections. She is a very forgiving teacher and is very
understanding that it is a hard topic to understand. |
|
|
25. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| She is an awesome Japanese teacher!!! |
| Best Japanese teacher I've had. |
| she is a great teacher and gives us assistance if we need help. |
| She is very well composed and is always patient with her students. |
| She's a nice teacher, she never gets upset with the students even when
homework is turned in late. She wants the class to get good grades and will
do what she can to help. |
| Her class is the funnest, and I am learning the most in her class than any of my other classes. |
| i like the fact that she can teach japanese and speak english, and how much fun she makes our class |
| Swan Sensei is very considerate of her students and she recognizes that learning another language
is difficult to do and tries her best to teach us every day. |
|
|
26. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
|
| Of course. She has so much passion for Japan and the Japanese language. |
| yes because shes super nice and caring |
| Yes |
| yes, because she grades fairly and she is always lenient on assignments. |
| Yes I would, because she is a wonderful teacher to have when learning another language. |
| Yes, she's a great teacher. The language barrier at times can create a slight
problem or two, but overall she speaks English very well and is easy to
understand. |
| Yes. She is repetetive, which is good for learning. |
| yes i would because she makes japanese seem so simple and easy. |
| yes i would recommend her to other students if they are looking to learn and work hard. japanese
language is not an easy language to learn, but her teaching style and methods helped a lot. |
| Yes, she is a very good teacher willing to help out any students. She is generally interested in the
subject as well as her students. To truly get the most out of the class however it may help to have
some understanding in class. |
|
|
27. Other comments:
|
| I will miss your class, Akiko Swan-sensei!!! |
| thank you so much for giving me opportunities to make me get a better grade. you are awesome!!! |
| I would take this class all over again just because she was teaching it. |
| I'm really happy I took this class! |
| Fun class and awesome teaching skills |
| perhaps change the textbook used. there were some editing errors. |
| I really would recommend that the class be longer to help with the students time to absorb the
material. This would be helpful as well as allow a bit more class time for the instructor. |

21. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| I believe that she is genuinely concerned, because she would try to help me better my studies through different approaches |
| She takes her time with each student that is having trouble understanding the content to explain carefully in a way that they can understand. |
| When a students seemed to be falling behind, she made an effort to help them. |
| approaches students who aren't doing well in course |
| She made it clear that we should ask questions if we were not sure about anything. She also said that we shouldn't be afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. |
| She would give us individual work in-class and came around to help every individual and also made sure that no one was left out. |
| By making sure we understood what was going on, step by step, and even repeating exercises if she
felt we didn't understand the lesson fully. She understands that learning another language can be
difficult, and never hesitated to give us second chances, hoping we would learn from past mistakes. |
| Everytime there was a misunderstanding, she made sure that everyone was on the right page. When
there was a bad grade you got on a test, or handout or something she would always help you out
and you could redo it to get a better grade. She always made sure she answered your questions. She
treated all of her students with respect, when someone wasn't understanding the material, she
would go and help. She would always encourage the students to do better. |
| the teacher was always willing to help me when i had problems. I have a hard time speaking
japanese and over all i am not the best at it. She understands that and works with me on my level.
She always tells the class that she is available if we need help and that we can go to her. |
| If a student was having trouble with a particular unit or topic, she took notice and would briefly talk with them one on one during class, clearing things up and answering their questions. |
| Was always ready and willing to help beyond class time. Often gave each
student individual help right at the time needed in class without offending
or embarassing the student and at the same time not depriving the other students of learning-time. |
| She was always there to help out students with difficulty learning. Japanese is a very hard language to understand but the instructor was willing to take the time to acknowledge that students are having troubles and will make other assignments to help out with struggling students. |
| Always helped them out in the end or beginning of the class period. |
| help the person when they were having a hard time. |
| Swan sensei helps students if they have a problem with something and makes sure they are getting it. |
|
|
22. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
|
| I felt that we jump around alot, not organized |
| I especially liked the assignments where you had to write your own sentences and speak them in front of the class. |
| I really enjoyed this class. I liked the films we watched, the speeches we made. She's a very nice
teacher and is comfortable with teaching. She commands the subject matter well. |
| i liked being able and having people to speak with in class |
| She was very helpful when we had questions or problems we couldn't solve. She wouldn't make fun of us and always made us feel like we were important by suggesting ways we could improve our grades. |
| I liked the fact that she used a lot of computer skills to help us was we learned by putting it on the big screen so we can all see instead of trying to teach us out of a book. |
| I wish the course could have gone at a slightly faster pace. But I thought Professor Swan did a
great job making sure everyone understood the basics before moving on to the more complicated
lessons. Lessons were easy to follow, and the textbooks were used regularly. The handouts she
provided were very useful and made learning Japanese that much easier. |
| I liked especially that she used her computer with pictures and other visuals to help understanding
the material easier. We even watched short learning films about the subject. |
| I liked the fact that she will help me one on one but i think the way we learned the material was in a
confusing way. I don't think it was the teacher so much, but it was more so the textbook. She
followed the textbook. Also, she went through the material really fast that i had a hard time
grasping the information because by the time i was starting to understand something we were
moving on to something else. I know she has to get through a lot of information before the
semester ends. |
| I liked that she was very organized and always had her lesson plan typed up so that she could project it for us.
I didn't like the organization of the textbook, though. It was kind of disorganized and hard to follow. |
| I especially liked the fact that she constantly spoke the language which
helped to familiarize us with the spoken language and be able to recognize
thru repetition much of the vocabulary. She was patient in getting us to
respond in the new language often having to repeat herself more than twice,
and then slowly help us form the response we needed/wanted. |
| I liked how the instructor had made use of the material. I enjoyed how she modernized the language as well as to teach us proper understanding of not only Japanese language but a little bit of culture as well. The only thing I disliked was the fact that it is such a short class. I would like to of have a bit more class time to better understand more of the subject. Other than that I really enjoyed this course even with it being very difficult. |
| Japanese is her native language, so she knew her material very well. |
| everything was fun about learning from that class |
| I liked that the class length wasn't too long or too short, i disliked that it was every single day though. |

23. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| She is very nice and humble. Not as arrogant as most teachers. |
| The teacher was nice and never mean to the students. She always helped if we asked. She would even make jokes and let the students have a fun time even when we were in class. |
| I would like to say that i enjoyed her class and that i will be taking her class again next semester. She is a very awesome teacher. |
| She is very nice and kind, and would like to have her as a teacher again. The way she taught helped
me learn alot. |
| She is a good teacher and knows this subject well. |
| She's good to learn Japanese from because that's her native language. She knows what's common and what's not, and when it's appropriate to say certain phrases. |
| She made us feel comfortable in class right from the beginning and towards
the end, learning this language became fun and less stressful, but always
focused on keeping us on track in learning the many aspects of the course
itself. Appreciated her sharing many customs and traditions of the people
of Japan as related to the language itself enforcing within me how much the
language of a people dictates a people's culture. |
| A very good instructor with a wealth of Japanese knowledge. She is also very understanding with student difficulties in understanding the subject. Again Japanese is a VERY hard language and the instructor was more than willing to breakdown the subject matter and accommodate struggling students. |
| She was cool, definitely taking her next semester. |
| keep up the good work |
| She's a good instructor and speaks very good english, easy to understand unlike some of my previous japanese teachers. |

24. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
|
| Yes I would, however I do not feel that this is truly a cource for the very beginer to japanese, as it goes way to fast. I have kids that are in high school, and their pace is much more resonable. I know that Swan sensei is following the chanccelor guidelines, but the books used are just not that good, I found some older materials in the library that I felt were more appropiate. I did not learn very much in this class. So overall I am ver disappointed, not buy Swan, just in the materials and structure used. I thing that I have a handle on hiragana, but not in katagan or kanji.... |
| Of course I would. I've learned more in this class under her schooling than any other similar classes I have taken in the past. |
| Yes. If you're thinking of learning a new language, Swan is a great teacher. She commands the
subject well and is willing to help stragglers if they need it. |
| yes because she's from japan and therefore understands more about the language than most people |
| Yes, she is a very good teacher. I can't think of anything bad to say about her. |
| Yes I would, because she makes learning the language a little easier because she likes to make sure that all her students are on the same page and are keeping up with the work. |
| In the beginning of the semester, students would be talking as she was instructing the class. I
would recommend she stop this behavior at the start, so that she does not run into problems down
the road. It can also be distracting when students come in late, I recommend she issue some sort
of class policy that limits this attitude. |
| Yes, I would because they could learn so much stuff. If a person does not know any kind of
japanese, she will help you learn so much in just one semester. |
| yes, she is good teacher but in general i would not recommend anyone to take a Japanese class. |
| Yes. She has a charming personality and knows the content well. Students that take her class should be willing to study at home too, though, because it requires a lot of memorization. |
| Absolutely! Am much surprised at how much was covered in this course and
I believe the instructor played a big part in it--always prepared, always
focused on a plan for the day, disciplined yet patient with each new
concept taught (especially the writings, ugh!), and especially ready and
willing to help beyond "the call of duty." |
| I would highly recommend this instructor. She is very polite and understanding as well as very helpful. She is also genuinely interested in her students and makes class fun and interesting. She will definitely make you want to engage in learning Japanese even though its a difficult language. |
| Yes, because you learn a lot in the class. She wants students to understand and speak Japanese. |
| yes, a very good teacher |
| Sure. If you're interested in japanese... |
