Great teacher has the art of teaching and inspiring

Animal Diseases & their Control is great course. I feel that the course covered the most common diseases/cases. I feel that the organization of the course was excellent! The organization made it possible to cover animal disease thoroughly and effectively; and animal disease is a huge subject matter that can be too much if not organized well and taught well. I really liked the clinical applications that were taught in class and the opportunities to apply the knowledge that was being learning. Also, the questions on quizzes and written questions on exams that required critical thinking and application were awesome opportunities to apply what was being learned. Dr. Stokes was an awesome instructor! Dr. Stokes taught very simply, organized, and in a manner that was effective for learning and retaining information. Dr. Stokes has a process of explaining that makes it possible for students to understand, comprehend, and apply what is being taught. It was great to learn not only about diseases but also about clinical application. Overall, Animal Disease is an excellent course! I just wish that there was more time for the course so that even more could be discussed in class!

Dr. Stokes is one of the best professors I have ever had!!

Perhaps leave open the quizzes a bit earlier? It was difficult to complete quizzes on time since I had classes and work on Thursday and Friday.

She is very passionate about her students success and it makes me want to learn a little more and push a little further knowing that she really cares about helping students get the best they can out of their education.

Course was a bit disorganized. Some subjects were covered by multiple instructors. Overall, great class. Stimulating and learned about many different diseases. Thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on labs with Belle. Thank you.

I just wanna say that I really enjoyed listening to your lectures. Itâ??s very obvious that love what you do. I wish my other instructors had the same enthusiasm. I donâ??t know if itâ??s intentional but I like the fact that you pick textbooks (Merck Manual/Physiology) that are essential to anyone who decides to go to vet school. Iâ??m still on the fence on whether or not to apply but Iâ??ll definitely hold on to them regardless. Thereâ??s a lot of interesting information in them. Iâ??m actually surprised how easy it is to comprehend (doesnâ??t read like a scientific paper). My doctor/boss is thoroughly impressed with my new-found knowledge. I knew a lot beforehand but this just took it to a whole other level. So thank you for that! I like the format of your lectures as well as your inclusion of short YouTube clips. This helps tremendously as I am more of a visual/hands on type of person. I also like that you integrated personal experiences into the lectures; it makes it much more relatable. The brochure/presentation was a nice touch. I really enjoyed putting it together. Should I ever become a vet and open my own practice, Iâ??ll definitely be designing my own brochures to have it reflect what I think is relevant. Having other people present alongside me was less nerve wrecking as well. One thing that I wish we were able to do would have been to go through the process of diagnosing and treating a patient. Meaning that youâ??d play the role of a client who brought their dog/cat in to have them examined for a particular problem. Weâ??d have to ask you various questions about your pet (vomiting/diarrhea) in order determine an appropriate diagnostic method (radiograph/urinalysis) in which you would state if itâ??s justifiable to run that test or not (based on the clinical signs/ownerâ??s observations). I hope you understand what Iâ??m trying to say. I think you have enough students in your class who work in (small animal) clinics that would be able to get the ball rolling and ask questions to properly diagnose and treat an animal. I know you did something similar to this in class but it would be cool if it was more in depth. Any possibility of you teaching another course (besides Diseases and Physiology)? I know youâ??re super busy but I thought Iâ??d throw it out there. Youâ??re an awesome teacher/person. I hope Iâ??m enthusiastic and dedicated as you are in whatever path I choose to take. You definitely set the bar :)

Doctor Stokes is very good in what she does. I honestly do not care how other teachers come and teach this course. Dr. Stokes is better than most of the guest speakers and she will guarantee do a better job in explaining the information. She is great and looking forward to see her next semester!

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

I loved learning about equine diseases. Learning about different diseases will help me as a horse/pet owner as well as in my future professional career. Very usefull course!

The quizzes really helped me see what I understood and what I needed to study more.

I think that the small animal diseases that I learned about will definitely give me knowledge that I can use in my future career

I am so glad this course was offered. Dr. Stokes not only had great and organized power point lectures, she was able to explain all diseases in a clear and easy to understand manner. She doesn't read straight off the slides and is able to elaborate and answer any questions that are asked. She also provides our class with many opportunities and invites guest lecturers for people interested in different fields of study. Best professor I've had at UH. Learned a lot and enjoyed this class definitely. Tests and quizzes are fair, slightly tricky as the semester progresses but very fair. Great experience overall. I like how she made us do a disease presentation and a vet clinic tour. It really made us think outside of the box rather than just show up to class and learn. She wanted us to get some sort of clue into what we are getting ourselves into.

Learning about these diseases were applicable to my job. I liked going through each disease and the symptoms.

The weekly online quizzes were very helpful. Getting quizzed weekly definitely helped me to retain the material that I've learned over the week. Also, class presentations were interesting. It was an opportunity to work with a peer/future colleague, practice oral presentation skills, and listen to others share their presentations.

Dr. Stokes provided clear, easy to understand, and very interesting powerpoints. The most valuable aspect of the course was not only the powerpoints but her explanations and examples as well. It made class very enjoyable! Guest speakers were valuable and a nice change but I would have preferred Dr. Stokes to teach all species' diseases. Merck book is valuable when learning specifics about diseases. I really enjoyed this class. It is an example of why I chose animal science as a degree in the first place!

I love how this course was structured around diseases that are common in dogs, cats, equine, swine, etc as well as uncommon diseases that still may have serious repercussions. The power points were very well organized and the pictures helped a lot. The pictures help provide a visual reinforcement when studying. Although there were many diseases, Dr. Stokes was able to emphasize important diseases which helped 'us' focus on key points when preparing for the quizes and exams. The interview project was fun as well! Forced us to get out of the classroom setting and get involved with the public and learn about business management aspects and protocols. Thanks much Dr. Stokes!

Everything. I really learned a lot from this course and it will be very valuable when I go on to veterinary school.

the quizes helped go over what we just learned

I think the quizes really helped to make sure we were thinking along the right track, especially quiz and test questions that were set up with little situations and we had to tell what was probably going on witht the animal.

I thought the project was a great learning experience.

I really enjoyed the clinical application and quizzes every week. It helped me understand how to be able to tell which disease the animal contained by just knowing a few major characteristics. The quizzes helped me keep up with the lectures every week.

the lectures...and i felt the course material was very relevant to stuff we see in the real world working mostly with companion animals here in HI. most courses offered in animal science are not geared at all to companion animals, rather ag animals, so i really enjoyed this course.

I feel that all aspects of the course were very valuable. The lectures provided us with the material we needed to learn. The quizzes tested our knowledge weekly and gave us an extra initiative to keep up with our studying. The presentations on a disease required us to go out and do some research in order to become familiar with it and to be able to teach our fellow classmates about it. The project made us apply what we learned in class to a real-life situation and facility.

Dr. Stokes is a great lecturer, her classes were always really interesting. Her passion for what she is teaching helps us students get interested as well. She is very approchable and easy to talk to.

She was very professional during lectures. She was serious, but made class enjoyable for me.

The way Dr. Stokes presents herself tells me she has a professional and understanding attitude. She wants to get to know her students and wants us to succeed. She constantly gives us advice on how to do the best we can and treats us with respect. She takes an interest in her students and gives us any opportunity to succeed. She is very organized, allowing her to present the subject very well. It is easy to understand and learn from her.

She was very approachable so that I wasn't embarrassed to talk to her yet, professional enough to maintain a true respect for her.

Although the class is at 7:30a, Dr. Stokes lectures in a manner that always makes me look forward to every class. I appreciate her dedication and enthusiasm about animals. She definitely cares about her students and their education. Thank you, Dr. Stokes!

The ONLY professor I have ever been able to relate to or feel comfortable around. Dr. Stokes carried herself in a professional manner and held a positive attitude even at 7:30 am! Very easy to ask her questions and also is a great reference.

Attitude toward students and subject were outstanding. She was asked us questions, kept us involved and was enthusiastic about the material. Always had a positive attitude and worked hard for us.

In my personal opinion, Dr. Stokes is one of the best professors in our department. She is genuinely willing to help students, always has a smile, and most importantly encourages her students. The university is very (VERY VERY) fortunate to have her. She contributes a lot of relative advice to students, especially pre-veterinary students. Initially, before taking this course, I was not sure about my vocational goals in veterinary medicine, however, I feel that now I am very interested and driven to learn more about the field and possibly pursue and career in it.

I plan on registering for her physiology class next semester and couldn't ask for a better professor to teach it! Information given is straightforward, yet understandable.

Awesome teacher. I would highly recommend Dr. Stokes to anyone in the animals science field or those that are just learning about animal dz. Definitely one of the top teachers I've had here at UH.

One of my favorite teachers I've ever had. I learned a lot about diseases as well as a lot that will be very helpful in vet school and beyond. I feel like she covered a lot of important material in an easy to follow and retain mannor.

She was very enthusiastic about the course material and very knowledgeable. I learned a lot from this class.

I enjoy the courses she teaches because she allows her students to see an application of the subject to actual life. I would recommend her to all students in the animal science department as well as outside departments in need of elective courses.

excellent. i only wish i could've taken more courses from her. she makes the material very easy to understand, because she breaks down terms...even the so called "simple" ones. a lot of professors in the animal science dept don't do that.

Dr. Stokes is one of the best professors I've had. She sincerely cares about her students and is a very fun and enthusiastic teacher. She is always well- prepared and gives awesome lectures. Her powerpoints are well put-together and include YouTube videos that give great visuals which helped me to understand the material. She taught in a way that made everything interesting and easy to learn.

I found it somewhat difficult to adjust to the guest lecturer's styles since I was so used to Dr. Stokes in this course. Maybe there is no need for guest speakers.

I am so used to her lectures that when guest lectures come in with their power point slides, I feel that it is a little hard to keep up or understand their slides when I go back to review them at night. Sometimes I don't know what's important when they speak and what's not so I take too little or too many notes on a certain subject. But the guest lecturers do more good than harm because they provide a different field of study that other students may be interested in rather than the typical domestic animals.

Perhaps an organized outline of each disease such as: Disease: Cause: Symptoms: Treatment: That way it is easier to take and go over notes.

Her lectures were very organized and easy to follow. Powerpoints looked like a lot of thought and effort were put into, and were of great help to me during my studies.

Dr. Buckley's and Dr. Z's powerpoints needed a little work...

I love the small class setting lecture. No changes needed.

I think that a few of the guest lecturers, especially the professors who are used to running their courses their own way, were a little difficult to fit into our exams. Some of what they covered didn't follow and easy flow like with Dr. Stokes, so maybe if they had an outline of what she would want them to cover, and maybe some how be able to make their test questions a little consistant because it was kind of difficult to study the information and 5 speakers test question format, it felt like I was studying how the professor would think about things more than the actual information.

I thought the pictures were great. But if it were possible, more hands on experience would be awesome.

Sometimes some of the guest lecturers were hard to understand especially on the way they would test. Some didn't post their lectures on laulima for everyone to access and it was hard to follow them because they went too fast.

i would have the quizzes open longer...like over the weekend (posted friday, due sunday). i think 24hrs is way too short of a time frame, especially because class and work schedules really get in the way sometimes. that's the only thing i would change.

I felt that of Dr. Stokes's lectures were very good. Dr. Buckley had a LOT of information on his day. His lecture could have been spread out between two days. However, I realize that there are time constraints with the number of lecture days and that this may not be possible.

29. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

Not so early!!! Why is it always offered at 7:30?!?!

I can't think of anything to improve on for this course.

I would have preferred that the course was offered later in the day, but other than that, Prof. Stokes did an excellent job teaching this course. I would definitely take her other courses and recommend her to other students.

The only thing I would say is to maybe post the lecture slides up online the night before the lecture so I may bring the slides to class. That way, I can take notes next to the slides instead of having random notes floating around in my notebook or trying to jot all the slides down while Dr. Stokes is lecturing.

Besides perhaps a different format for powerpoint presentations (like mentioned above) I really cannot think of an additional way to improve this particular class.

If it is/was possible, I think the lectures should be posted sooner. And, maybe the veterinarian(s) from the Honolulu Zoo could be another guest speaker(s)?

Guest speakers only for one lecture instead of 2. Also, maybe a little more time allocated for quizzes.

Finding a way to make the guest speakers lectures and exam questions a little more uniformly presented could help. Also maybe adding some kinds of hands on or field trip could be helpful and interesting.

This course could be improved by perhaps going into detail about some of the treatments necessary for the diseases discussed in class.

This is the ONLY class I have taken that I look forward to lecture! Even at 7:30am! As much as I dislike attendance, I believe it should be taken. However, it is finally a relief to know I am getting points for showing up to a class I actually enjoy! Thanks Dr. Stokes for an awesome class, it made my semester a tad bit more interesting :)

Everything! I loved this course and really enjoyed it! Can't wait to take Animals Diseases and their Control from you next semester Dr. Stokes!

thorough detailed explanations, emphasized with diagrams and you tube videos=VERY helpful.

The quizzes actually helped a lot in preparing for the exams. Also they provide a good boost to your grade. Also the presentations were a good way to understand the topics that were chosen. I think the best way to understand how something works is to look at when it isn't functioning in the way that it should and we were forced to do this by picking a disease that affects our chosen body system.

The textbook was containing the newest information.

i really liked the videos that were shown to demonstrate whatever system we were talking about during lecture. it was really helpful to visually see what we were learning about. i also thought the weekly quizzes were helpful.

The clinical application part of the lectures were really helpful to understand the concepts.

The exams were closely based on the ppts.

The power point presentations provided to the students before lecture. It is easier to follow along and allows students to listen more rather than take copious amounts of notes

I don't think any improvements need to be made. The class is less intense than others I've taken. Instead of bombarding us with tons of information, this class is geared more to getting a basic understanding of how things work. I think that this is a better approach because if you can understand the basics you have a firm foundation to build on in the future, rather than only learning bits and pieces of varying difficulty.

I think Dr. Stokes should teach the entire course instead of team teaching it. I really enjoyed how she makes the students understand each lecture and is very approachable.

I like Dr. Stokes' teaching style but I have a problem with the exams. I think that they are too easy for a 400-level course. The way that the tests are written--even if students do really well on them--does not demonstrate that a student has mastery over this subject.

very good, this is her first time teaching here and i think she did a very good job. I've had several classes in which the instructor was new. Usually they were just okay. Once he was really really bad. She's been the best; she is comparable to other professors that have been here for a long time.

she is very patient, understanding, and is always willing to answer our questions and clarify things. she is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material. i like the way she teaches because she goes at a comfortable pace but still makes sure we cover everything. the videos during lecture were very helpful & the quizzes at the end of each week helped to refresh what we went over in lecture.

Honestly, i didn't care for Dr. Vincent's lectures as much. He seemed less able to communicate the information to the student in an effective way. It was a little difficult adjusting to the different styles of teaching and the different structure of exam questions between the two professors. Maybe if they could collaborate so that all test questions would be in the same format.

I loved it!

Good, recommended

Overall i enjoyed this class. Again it focuses on giving a basic understanding of physiology without over doing it. It does not overwhelm the student as some of the other courses often do. I think i learn more with this style of teaching and my grade reflects it. Some of the other courses i will learn the material by the end of the semester, but everything is so crammed that i usually don't truly understand the concepts until after I've done poorly or mediocre on the exams. Also questions in this class are straight forward. They test your knowledge on the material and do not try to mislead you or trick you in anyway. Again the quizzes in this course were very helpful. It provided a way to show us what we needed to learn for the exams.
