19. If you were teaching this course: a. What would you do to improve it? b. What would you change?
To improve this course I would have done without the videos. It may be easier to put on a movie but sometimes the movie was to fast for me to take notes which made the information harder to comprehend.I would rather stick to lectures because you can reitterate information and and answer stop to answer questions when necessary. Other than that the course was very good.
I would change the testing method to multiple question and answer and test once a week.
Because the essay questions required pinpoint accuracy, and any detail left out would count against you, a way to get small extra credit points would be helpful, if you miss on a detail in the essay, it could be made up for if you understood a related concept well. Although, our only homework was to study the question that we know in advance, so it made sense that the grading would be so firm.
Mr. G was pretty good....cept for the grading part..that kinda sucked
Have a variety of instructional techniques, watching movies was an intersting way to learn about world civilizations but taking notes 95% of the time would be changed.
What I would do to improve it would be to atleast when taking tests allow atleast notes of some sort like an index card, because maybe for some people it is dificult to memorize all of the notes and discussions we may have in class. But other then that everything is good.
The only thing I can think of would be to; Not take off points for margin, header, etc, settings on term paper. This is really a printer issue that should not be used to lower a students grade. It is very discouraging for students who wrote an A+ paper, but got an A- or a B due to petty printer issues.
I would Change THe Time Of THe Class. 8 in the morning is too early and your cheerfulness plus my crankiness equals irritation.
If it were more base accordingly to the text it might of been helpful.
I would remove the smaller text book, it was used once but I did not see a need for it. I had this book in Gabe James's hist 152 and it wasn't used much in that class either. Possible another book, just would not suggest that one. Mr. G did use it for a essay assignment, which was the most it was used. Also i would give just a little more detail about the quiz questions in the class review, not that i am asking for it to be easier or the answer given, it just was a little difficult in knowing if you were studying for the right essay questions.
Nothing! I really enjoyed the class. Even though it was a lecture class, which is completely fine for the subject, it was easy to understand and the teacher made it fun and interesting. :)
If I were teaching this course i would change the fact that its just a lecture to more of a hands on class.
i love mr.giordanengo's class and would not do anything to change it.
More of a "hands on" type of class instead of just lectures.
If I was teaching this course I would do a more active lesson plan. For example instead of a spoken lecture every class, I would attempt a more hands-on approach.
Nuthing really. He did a great job teaching the material.
I thought this course was very informative and interesting. I find nothing that needs changing.
I would bring in a more varied range of material such as videos, films, books etc. I would challenge the students to answer questions rather than lecturing for close to three hours straight with little to no opportunity for students to have to think objectively.
I would advise the class that to have a tape recorder.
I like the way the professor handled the class. No complaints. Maybe I would do away with the essay questions. HA!
I would change the book! I rarely used the book for preparing for a test because it only offered a summary of what we discussed in class. Sam is very knowledgeable and my notes were always better than the book. I would also like to see more variation in lectures, and perhaps group activities or online discussion. The course itself is very rushed, often covering hundreds of years in a single lecture, hence dreadfully superficial.
I wouldn't change a thing.
To improve the class, from a student's standpoint, I would maybe increase the number of points the class is worth. A 200 point class makes it pretty tough to get an "A". On the same token, no one claimed it was going to be easy. Also, don't tell me that 3 points off of a 50 point paper for no title page is not a big is a VERY big deal when it is a 200 point class. Speaking of the paper, apparently there was a powerpoint presentation that outlined the requirements....that would have been nice to know. I don't think that it is necessarily fair to mention said powerpoint ONCE, in ONE class, for ten mintues...and expect everyone to know about it. No, I did not talk with my other classmates because I don't even know any of their names....we did not do introductions. Plus, I work 50 hours a week and this is my only class on campus. None of which are excuses for not knowing the requirements, BUT it would have been nice if the powerpoint was distributed through email to ALL OF THE STUDENTS, not just the ones who requested it. How can someone request something if they don't know it exists.....? Plugs for the eCafe survey were mentioned on multiple occasions, on multiple class dates, I don't think it would have been an issue to mention this PowerPoint a second time. Also, if I were teaching this class, I may get to know the students a little better. After attending four weeks of classes, multiple face-to-face conversations, and numerous emails, my name was not remembered. True, the teacher is not there to make friends, the teacher is there to teach....but come on. I then received an email telling me I would be failing the class due to an absence that was previously discussed and approved!! Maybe if someone approaches you with an issue or absence or something to that effect, take note of it. Write it down on scratch paper, something! Instead of forgetting the issue we talked about before class then looking quizically at me at break time when I have another question about it. The exams were difficult, yes...not that the material was hard to study or retain, just because it was only a 30 point test and one point was marked off for just about anything. The identifications are a chore. Thirty things are written on the board and expecting the students to remember who, what, when, where, why and how of each....really? Maybe choose 10 to give to the students when you give the questions to at least narrow the study process somewhat..
Nothing! This course was excellent :)
i had a really had time following the dates and in a history class that this a really important thing. it would have been nice to put on the dates on the board to in a power point. i have taken the second part of this class and the instructor provided many power points which made it helpful for such a long lecture.
If I were teaching this course, I would use the text a lot more instead of relying on spoken notes to use on tests. This way if a student missed something from my lecture, they would still be able to get the correct information from the text books.
I would make the classes a little shorter but thats basically it.
fallow the history how it was written
little more homework
Well considering I'm not a teacher acedemic instruction on my part in my opinion is worthless however I believe in my "opinion" the teacher did very well
i would have done what the instructor did and extended the time on exams. the only thing i would change would be not having to take notes after the exams. i think i could speak for the class saying our hands were pretty fried by the end of the exam :P
a. Honestly the instructors only limitation was the text itself. It was adequate as far as information that it gave us. But it was inferior in the way that it offered bias opinions without supporting details. b. I wouldn't change a thing, the course was only challenging if you didn't show up to class. If a student showed up and was paying attention - they fared well.
nothing, this was the best history class ive taken
I would have group projects. more writing on the board.other then that I would not change th way mr.g taught
I wouldnt change any part of the course it was very good and i liked it alot he is a great teacher.
none...outstanding teacher
Mr. Giordanengo did a great job teaching the subject in a understanding way but I would be more specific on the dates of the events that took place. And also I would try not to get side track because it gets confusing.
better books for the project.
a.i would incoporate more video lectures. b. i nothing really needs to be changed.
Nothing everything is good
the only issue i had with the class is that essay snuck up on me and maybe a few more reminders would be nice, although this is totally the students responsibility.
20. What do you think of the teacher and his/her teaching methods?
I thought that the teacher was very good at breaking down the concepts of the course in a way that was easy to understand.I liked the use humor during lecture as well.It kept me interested during lecture. I really didnt see anything wrong with his methods so im unsure of how he could improve them.
Great teacher, very informative. He made learning the subject fun and entertaining. I was never bored in class.
This teacher had great teaching techniques and I wish that some other professors would take some advice from him.
Very good!
I really like the lectures. Come to class everyday, and you will be more or less ready to take the test. No homework, just pay attention during class.
He has a good sense of humor so that made note taking a bit more interesting most of the time.
I like his teaching methods it's ok.
I feel that Mr. G is a great teacher. He keeps the class entertained and interested during his lectures.
He uses many present day examples which make the topic at hand interesting and fun.
Very good, I liked his LOUD voice.
I liked him and he did seem to care, he definently knew his history. I liked that he had an writtn outline that he used to give his lectures each day, and that outline matched the text book.
For my first straight lecture class, with videos and powerpoints too, I really enjoyed the way it was taught. It was straight to the point and we were able to receive a lot of information per class. There were no distractions.
The teacher was an excellent instructor and made some things very funny tolearn about and his methods were good but again more hands on instead of just a lecture at 8:00 in the morning.
mr.giordanengo is very fair, his class is engaging, and he is a very good lecturer. i never feel like im bored n his class, he is always informative and engaging.
I really enjoyed this class, he kept my attention by infusing humor and wit.. it was very tactful especially because we have a 2 hour class
its ok
I thought that they were acceptable, but they were not hands-on enough.
I really liked his teaching method. I deffinately got the material, and he made class interesting and fun.
The teachers teaching methods were very effective.
I felt that the teachers teaching methods were average overall. At times he seemed to overly simplify a topic, almost dumbing himself down in a way, for example: using the words "poopie" or "potty" in a college classroom seemed completely unnecessary and unprofessional. At times his attitude suggested that he had better things to do and would rather be elsewhere than teaching our 5pm history class. And though he seemed moderately passionate about the topics he was teaching, it seemed as though he couldn't care less about what students had to say. He also failed to discipline the few individuals who made crude or detracting comments, allowing them to continuously blurt out whatever they cared to say whenever they cared to say it, giving no room for any of the other students, who might or actually had something remotely intelligent to share, do so.
I enjoy his teaching methods.
I like the way he lectures and relates to modern day issues and subjects in order for the students to better understand.
While history could be boring, Sam brought wit and perspective to the past that always spawned laughter and contemplation. His style was very energetic and boisterous, which helped the class remain awake, though caught complaints from neighboring classes on occasion. Though I dreaded the thought of taking history, I was overall impressed. Sam made history interesting and entertaining, almost to the point of enjoyment.
very good, understandable and enjoyable.
I like how the instructor adds a bit of comedy in the lectures, keeps the majority of the class interested in the material.
I thoroughly enjoyed his teaching methods. He is a very entertaining teacher, that's for sure. He is able to keep students well engaged and actually presents the material in a way that makes you want to learn. Many times I found myself on the edge of my seat, listening to the history of different civilizations. He actual TEACHING methods are some of the best I have experienced.
My instructor is a very fair person. He is very helpful and works with his students to ensure that they make it through his class. He is flexible and works with students if they need more time to get quizzes and papers in to ensure they pass.
I think my teacher was great and i really liked his teaching methods :)
way to much talking. i found myself really trying to pay attention but by the hour and a half point it was hard. didnt really care for our the lectures were presented i find history interesting but i found this boring.
I think that his methods were fair and interesting in such a way where the students could easily learn about the History that was being taught.
I think this teacher has good teaching methods, long but good.
Very motivating and encouraged class interaction with questions. Honest and open teacher, always willing to help. Teacher had good class control withhout being a micromanager, and a good attitude, which encouraged me to want to learn and stay on top of my studies related to the class.
excellent, really gets the class to get invovled.
It's great and effective. I'd rather him not show any movies though, his lectures are way more entertaining.
I think that his teachings inspire conversation outside the class room. Overall enjoyble and informational class
i think the way that we got tested was the best way to actually learn the material. not having homework throughout the course didn't bring unnecessary stress but we were responsible for understanding and being able to explain what it is we were learning. class discussions is also a huge part in learning, for me at least. the instructor broke things down in order to make us understand it more clearly. bringing humor to the class was also a gigantic plus.
His methods are inclusive and very attention grabbing. He uses alot of nmonic devices.
this teacher made history enjoyable
He has very unique and fun way of teaching.he made it very clear of what was going to be covered. He presents information clearly.the exams were effective and easy to understand. He is a very great teacher
His lectures were interesting and easy to understand.
LOVE, LOVE his teaching methods!
i love his lecture style of teaching its very informative and i feel that i get the most out of my learnings with this style of teaching.
He knows what he is talking about and relates it to us. He has stories that make learning history fun better to understand. It's great!
I enjoyed the the class, i learned in detail and my interests were caught making it easier for me to pay attention
Mr.Giordanengo. is a very good teacher. He has brung a new and refreshing way of teaching, that has benefit me greatly.
He talks too much but over all its all good
very great! made learning about history fun and not boring! very easy to learn the material :]
i enjoyed his lectures, they kept me interested in the material, so intern i attended class and comprehended the information well. His enthusiasm helped to make the class more interesting.
21. Has he/she contributed to your general knowledge or to learning job skills?
By taking this course my general knowledge of world history has improved dramatically. Now i have a better sense of how the civlizations of earth came to be and how many of the concepts used in the past have influenced how society works today.
yes he has contributed to my general knowledge of history.
General knowledge, nothing I'd imagine i'd use often.
Kind of not really this class didn't really focus on job skills maybe writing.
Yes, absolutely. I knew very little about history before this class, and now I can speak up in conversation about history:)
Yes, I have learned about History and I am now more interested then ever. I like history, i thought i would hate this subject.
yes roman times are more clear to me and will help me in future dicussions.
Greatly. I have never learned that much in any other history class, even in high school. I've learned a better understanding about history and why things are the way they are today.
He has contributed to my general knowledge but not so much to my job skills.
yes most definetly.
Yes....I have learned sooooooo much from this class, and that is directly because of the teachers aproach and enthusiasm he has for his job. I have did not learn a lot form my high school career, i was very glad that this teachers passion for what he does was apparent...he is awesome, although most of the people in my class didnt share my thoughts or opinions on him, i believe them to be closed minded, they shoudl have been grateful to have him for a teacher, i am truly bummed that he is not doing another night class next semester!
He contributed to my knowledge of history, but the course did not help my job skills.
Very much so
I learned things in this course that I have never heard before and things that I have heard but never knew all the facts and details. I learned a lot of knowledge and skills that can be applied in my future job and I won't forget it.
This was one thing that bothered me most, and the answer would be NO. During the course we were asked to write only one research paper in total. When the teacher had graded and handed it back to me, the only comments left were those about marginal spacing or "not spelling out the date" rather than giving any real feedback in relation to the content or the quality of my writing. Writing the paper seemed to be a complete waste of time. I understand the significance of correct spacing etc, but whats more important than the message or point that the writer was trying to make? I was unable to determine if the teacher was grading based on Spacing, proper alignment, etc, and or if he was interested in what the actual content of the paper consisted of at all.
Yes. The way he presented information and lectures was captivating and always kept it exciting and funny!
Before the class I knew almost nothing of history, nor was I interested. Now I find myself noting historical framework in life and current events. I can now appreciate mankindâ??s past, our journey, and blunders more than ever. The world has context now!
yes I learned a lot this semester in his class.
Yes, my general knowledge has indeed been contributed to. Having taken other history classes, obviously the facts have been taught, but has not always sunk in. I will probably take away more knowledge from this class than any other class similar to it.
Before entering in this class I had no knowledge of what history was about nor did I have interest in it. Being in the class has given me some knowledge of what the past people were like and how it paved the road for our current society.
Yes....most definitely :)
yes, this course has contributed to my general knowledge of history and what happened in it, but job skills were not taught so much.
yes, this class actually challenged me mentally with the essay form tests.
He made me want to learn more on some things.
Very much so
yes. information learned in this class helped me to understand other concepts in other courses.
Very much so. Infact im continuing my history education with him next semester because of his skills, style, and method.
he put toghether the miising pieces of the history. ThAt were missing.I feel more intellectual now. I feel more prepared for life
great knowledge of subject...outstanding
Yes. I might be a History teacher because of him.
i have learned much about all the world history that we have covered.
Yes he has taught me about many different things
very much so. learned alot of stuff that i didnt even know.
yes very much so, my understand of history as culture developed greatly and next semester i will take his 152 class.
22. Other comments:
Thanks for an awesome class Giordenego! Aloha
I wish he had covered India, Asia a little more in detail.
Mr. G was accomidating and understanding to me.
I enjoyed this class so much, I signed up for hist 152!
i plan on taking history 152 from mr.giordanengo because i enjoyed his 151 class soo much.
I would really like to take other classes from him. I think that the way he comes across totally helps to facilitate higher glad that he is here at hawaii community college!
This is a once a week class that was vital for me to attend and get the information from the lectures. I'm taking 2 history classes this semester and i'm not very excited when it comes to them, but Giordanengo is very enthusiastic and funny which captivates an audience. I think that HCC is very lucky to have him teaching here. If I need another class that he is teaching I would definitely look for him as the instructor.
All in all, I am still debating whether or not to take one of your classes again. I very much enjoyed your classes, you are an exceptional teacher, and as I mentioned before, I learned a LOT from you. But it seems that any form of approachability is lost once the teaching portion is over. There should be SOME degree of getting to know who your students are. My guess is that some people will write nasty reviews because they are angry about your tests being hard. They ARE hard. This is college. But honestly, I think you are a very good teacher. Tough, but mostly fair. I would definitely recommend your class to someone who genuinely wants to learn and is willing to put in the effort to get a good grade.
This class was awesome :)
when you have a paper in the class that is worth a lot of points then make clear in the syllabus what it is you want grammar wise, title page, etc... we use the syllabus is a reference.
great class and wouldnt mind taking another similar class just like this one.
WOO HOO GIORDANENGO!!! loved the class.
mr. giordanengo is a great teacher
I found the book "A History of World Societies" helpful; howerver, I only used the "global experience" once.
He is a great teacher
He is super funny and I just love the way he teaches history. He makes it fun and exciting. I find myself waiting for the next class!
outstanding teacher
i hope this style of teaching spreads to other classes and teachers
i really enjoyed this teacher, and i look foward to attending more class thought by Mr. Giordanengo.
thank you for making history interesting!
