7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The class and group discussions were the most valuable. All students were encouraged to share their experiences in relation to the reading material. Any time that I brought up an interesting point, I learned to not rely on my professor to let me know when I was doing well. My classmates responded well to my interesting points. The discussion questions were not picked by the professor, but each student was free to ask their own question for their classmates to discuss. We were pushed to back up our questions with evidence from the readings, a skill I will carry with me into the rest of my academic and professional careers.
The resources (books, articles, etc) made even local students re-think their pre-conceptions of multiculturalism in Hawaii.
The lectures were the most valuable. The readings were a close second.
Going to the museums
professor followed guidelines for syllabus and was awesome in giving a students a head up for what's ahead as an online class. Her hints in the writing workshop helped me attain better grades for my discussion posts.
I enjoyed all of the readings except Growing Up Local. I felt the stories did not have as strong of a comment on culture as the other works.
The online discussions were very insightful and helped to solidfy content from the readings.
Although this class was online as well as a Writing Intensive credit, for the first time, I did not feel overwhelmed with work in a writing intensive course. The subject matter was very interesting and we were able to discuss with everyone else in the class about the class readings. We were also required to go to cultural sites and write an essay which made the class have some valuable hand-on time as well.
Reading different books, especially Pau Hana, Voices of Wisdom, and Asian Settler Colonialism gave me different insights into the place I call home.

11. Other comments:
Professor Diamond only gave her opinions and guided us after the weekly discussions was complete. For the first two weeks, even after reading the directions, I was still unsure whether I was contributing correctly. Although she was clear about class directions, she directed us to websites to help with our writing skills. Those links were not very reliable and were not very organized. I felt that there was not enough of her helping us practice our writing skills.
Course was well organized. The due dates for both papers were miscommunicated however.
The professor was very organized, gave ample time to read the materials, and was also awesome in giving weekly feedback to the class. I really appreciated her organized skills for an online teacher!
Loved this class. Would take another class by this professor,
I appreciated the flexibility of the the professor. The course format worked very well for a summer course. I was concerned about taking a class online, but the professor communicated effectively and found a way to make it work.
This was the best writing instensive course I have ever had, and the best online course by far. Also, the instructor was very understanding, very easy to talk to and was always prompt to give suggestions and answer all questions that I had. :) I highly recommend this course and this instructor. :)

14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Excellent and knowledgeable.....the readings she chose were especially fantastic.
Considering that this is an online course, Professor Diamond has expressed herself very well in her online interactions with students. Emails, assignments, posts, and other activities on Laulima were very clear and concise, and did not require any clarification. If there were any questions, Professor Diamond responded very quickly through email or through Laulima.

19. What did you like most about your online course experience?
efficient and convienant
I liked the open-ended schedule
Time flexibility and more freedom in independent study.
20. What did you like least about your online course experience?
When comparing with other online classes both from last semester and this semester, I didn't like how the "beginnings and endings" of each class was different from each other. That one class would go from Mon.-Fri. and another would go from Mon.-Sat. And another would go from Mon.-Sun. They should all start and stop on the same day and times. And I also just wished that there was some flexibility with the weekly posts. Because some weeks you really understand and connect with the material, so that week you would probably post more. And on weeks when you didn't either connect with or understand the material, there would be some flexibility so that if you only posted 2-3 posts you wouldn't get penalized for it.
time consuming
I missed being able to discuss the material with other people face-to-face. I do not think that on-line communication can replace in-depth classroom discussion.

21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

The readings
Assigned readings and course content.
22. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

maybe a little too fast paced
On-line discussion with other students. I suspect that online courses are just not for me.

20. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great!!!
Diamond knows her stuff, but needs to remember not everyone loves folklore.
The grading of regular assignments seemed inconsistent, sometimes she had it out of 10 sometimes it was out of 8, sometimes I had a grade but didn't know how much it was out of.
she's really into her teaching and subject
Professor Diamond was extremely knowledgeable about the course material and additional information about academia in general. She was very helpful in instructing ways to formulate a well thought out research paper and how to articulate it effectively. We were assigned quite a bit of reading and instead of writing so many responses, I would have liked to discuss the books and articles more thoroughly in class. Perhaps several short essays due over the course of the semester in regards to the readings would have allowed for more development of sophisticated analysis of the readings. The responses felt more like busy work than productive analytical writing. Instead of spending quality time writing them, I often felt rushed just to get something turned in.
Great teacher that engages students to do their best. Could have given more positive feedback, she seemed to be too critical at times.
Great. She stimulated the class and encouraged students to participate in discussions.

30. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Local Humor
Guest speakers were cool. Site visit was fun. Research project was good.
The books that you assigned for our reading
i like the group discussions and the videos
The guest speakers and scholarly articles were the best sources of information pertaining to the course material. There were a bit too many readings in pidgin that were assigned. Folk's you Meet at Longs was sufficient enough without having to read Pass On, No Pass Back. Perhaps a little more material on Native Hawaiian culture would be interesting. The guest speaker were a wonderful addition to the course and effectively highlighted different perspectives on the course material.
I liked how the course gave a well-rounded interpretation of what local identity means.
I enjoyed doing the site visits because I visited museums that I probably would not have otherwise. I found the museums interesting and useful to our course.
Guest Speakers.
The section about local humor because the video clips were very interesting.
I liked the guest lecturers that were brought in to expand on course material. I also enjoyed the videos shown in class as they were interesting and funny.
The Massie Affair. VERY INTERESTING!
readings and guest speakers
videos and most of the reading
The guest speakers because it was interesting to hear their perspective and get a sense of their experiences that we may not have, or yet to have.
31. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Okamura
Responses. During the course I changed how I did responses and still got the same grade. It was easy to give up on responses because I got the same comments everytime. Maybe an example of response would be helpful.
a lot of reading
having a response for nearly every class
the oral presentations
the responses due EVERY class was exhausting and useless. I spent little time developing an effective argument and worried more about just getting something turned in.
I would have preferred a couple of short writing assignments rather than turning in a response for every single class.
I did not like the Rolling the R's book because it was too vulgar. I didn't really appreciate the guest speaker's language either.
Final project.
Certain lecturers were really boring. They did not interest me and I felt had very little to do with the class topics.
no comment
certain reading.
I think maybe the field trip to the JCC because maybe it would of been easier for some of us to have had it on a weekend so that we wouldn't have to change our schedule, especially those with class after or before the field trip. However, other than that, it didn't bother me going to JCC.
32. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Great!!!
A real hands on course. It was nice at times and I liked it and then at other times I found it hard to motivate myself.
the reeding and format of the class was very beneficial to my other classes, so served more than one purpose.
recommended extremely
This was a highly engaging and interesting course. Professor Diamond is an awesome teacher and I would recommend this class and any others she teaches to other students. The readings and writing intensive aspect could be tweaked a bit, but overall, the course was well organized and highly informative.
I'm glad I took the course, I learned a lot.
It was very interesting and allowed me to gain a better understanding of different cultures and Hawaii's multiculturalism.
It was very interesting and knowledgeable. The course and material were unique and provided new insight about Hawaii and our diverse population.
Good. I would recommend the teacher and the course. It gives an in-depth look at Hawaii's diverse history.
7/10
I really enjoyed the class material, the pace and the variety of topics. I have learned more about living here in Hawai'i in these last few months than I have in 5 years of living here. Thank you so much!
This class was fun and interesting. I would recommend to a friend
I liked it and I would recommend it to people to take it because it would allow them to learn the multiculturalism especially in Hawaii and understand it since we are in Hawaii.

2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
This is one of the requirements for my concentration/major of Early Childhood Education. By me taking this class I got to experience differnt kinds of museums but I didnt feel that this is a need for Early Childhood Education Degree. I have just one question. What is ANTH have to do with ECE? Thats the one thing that I dont understand by taking this class.
It helped me realize the politcs that surround museums and the importance of the past in our society.
Personally this course has allowed me to look at museums in a different way. To question the truth what is being displayed.
It helped me in my writing and analytic thinking skills. It also inspired me to view museum exhibitions with a critical eye that goes beyond simple entertainment.

5. Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning.
This class was a writing intensive class and knowing it was I knew that there were going to be a lot of writing and assignments. The lessons and resources that were given made the class easier to understand and I felt that it was basic stuff to understand. The posting was good, it wasnt to much to do or too little to do.
maybe online interactive
Film clips or videos might be a nice addition as this was an online course.
This was a WI class yet, it was a rewarding class where I learned new and different areas pertaining to museum studies.
For museum projects, to have a sample of what to expect or what to follow, better guidelines. Readings from the text is hard to understand. Notes should be posted for each chapter.

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
The one thing that I would do to improve this course would be adding notes with the lectures. For one I need both the lecture and notes to comprehend what is being said.
None
Writing examples of papers.
I felt that my questions asked through email wasn't always properly answered. Some I felt were answered sarcastically, and others unclear. Because of that I felt that I needed to hold back some of my questions. Not everything was sarcastic, just that some questions I asked, could have been answered more politely.
I can't think of anything more, although I often wished there was less reading. I had difficulty keeping up with that and the required weekly postings.
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Susan is a very good professor that is there to help when she is needed and she explains everyting clear and understandable.
She really knows her stuff, and she understands the online student being busy parents and working professionals. So she extends flexibility in order for her students to succeed in her class.
Dr. Diamond is thorough, knowledgeable, and creative. She did a good job of trying to guide us through the vast amount of material. I really enjoyed the two books she selected for the course. I will never look at museums the same way again - and that's a good thing!
She is knowledgeable she and passionate about her subject as well as an excellent teacher. She helped us improve our skills in writing, critical thinking any ability to appreciate and analyze museums. We covered history, anthropology, museology, and museography and writing thoroghly in this class.
A good teacher.
She was good, no regrets taking this class
Heather Diamond is extremely knowledgeable of the course subject matter, and thoroughly conveys information through a variety of venues. I give her high marks for that. She is also quite a task master, with high expectations on student performance, both in quality and quantity.

20. My overall evaluation of this course is...
THis course was a very understandable course that it wasnt to hard nor to easy. It was explained in ways that could be understood. The course provided learning tools to understand the concepts of the course.
A very effective class if you want to learn museum studies, and interesting facts on museum politics
I really enjoyed the course and several of the readings. It was definitely very challenging and required a great deal of focus and time. This was an online writing intensive course, and I will say that I was rather disappointed in the quality and content of the material submitted by other students. Dr. Diamond certainly tried to guide and correct students, but a lot of the time postings were poorly written and did not follow instructions or contain good content.
It was challenging in a good way. We had a lot of material to read as well as lectures and discussion board postings. Overall, I feel it was definitely one of the most worthwhile classes I have taken, and will enrich me personally as well as academically. Our instructor had high expectations of us and she gave us that back equally with the energy she put into reading all our work and commenting on it every step of the way, She also provided many resources for us to learn from which must have taken a considerable amount of work.
A good course.
If I see Dr. Heather Diamond in future class I might actually take classes from her, I would also recommend her to my fellow students. It was hard work, lots of writing but it was writing that if you manage your time you can do it. Need to keep up with the weekly assignment and learn how to critically read.
Neutral
This was a very interesting and informative class. I'll be using what I learned for a long time. I give high marks for interesting and relevant content. I also wouldn't want to take this class again. It was no cakewalk.
