Took rex before, great teacher
The subject is very interesting to me. I always wanted to get into politics so I want to get a degree first before I start Politics.
required and professor had good reviews
Required for political science major
Major Requirement
Pols major requirement
Interested in course want a minor. Very helpful and detailed
This course meets my one of my elective requirements for political science major, and I feel that it is important to understand the political system of the nation that I live in.
It was a POLS Major requirement.
Major requirement (POLS), personal interest.
I had to take two classes from a social science category as part of my major.
I needed it for my Political Science major requirement, and I am interested in American politics so I wanted to take this class eventually. I had previously taken a class from Rex so I knew he was a good instructor, so that's why I took this class from him.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Great interaction with the class
how relatable he is. Seems sorta down to earth.
Very informative, clear in what he wants
The style of teaching made students want to share and get involved in discussions
thorough in his preparation for class, is able to incorporate media into the class and talk about subject matter that is interesting
He has a passion for the subject matter.
His ability to break things down
Approaching the American politics in other way challenging the existing ideas.
Very knowledgable and helpful when it comes to assignments
Willingness to help, enthusiastic , and good use of resources
I feel that Professor Troumbley's greatest strengths are that he can succinctly present both the dominate political narrative and a critical evaluation of that narrative from multiple points while still expanding the student's knowledge of commonly utilized tools and principals used when studying both politics in general and the politics of America specifically. Further, I found that his willingness to facilitate discourse on the topics covered rather than simply presenting his point of view and moving on was a great boon to the classroom.
What I found to be most valuable and helpful about Professor Troumbley was the feedback he put on our assignments. It was always very complimentary or very constructive which I found to be very helpful. Also, he has a good sense of humor that helps keep you paying attention during lectures.
He was extremely approachable and clearly knowledgeable about the subject and Political Science in general. He also allowed frequent questions and managed to answer them and foster interesting discussion.
The guy made me think about things in a way I would have never thought about without his guidance.
Rex was knowledgeable and helpful, and explained concepts in understandable matters. This has helped me a lot when trying to read the more difficult readings like Shapiro or more abstract ones like Chun as I sometimes could not see what the authors wanted to say. In the few instances that people did not understand the reading, he helped us understand the reading better and gave us chances to improve our writings.
Clear and concise about assignments and topics
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
nothin.
Was really easy to skip class
Rex knows his stuff and you can fake what you know.
can't think of anything
Nothing
Give a set date for final proposal would be more clear
I legitimately don't have anything negative to say, Professor Troumbley demonstrated both genuine interest in the subject, and willingness to help the students learn and engage with the subject matter critically, often making himself available after classes to engage with any questions students had lingering after the day's class, and readings, and is a highly effective instructor who encourages students to think critically about the political.
What I found to be least valuable and least helpful was the fact that we basically did the same thing every class. There was always a prezi show or reading that we went over. Maybe a little more diversity in his teaching style would make the class even more interesting that it already is.
Nothing in particular. My only problem with the course was that it covered with many broad subjects, but rarely explored them with great depth. It was out of necessity of course, this being an overview, and that's a problem with the class, not with Rex as a lecturer.
Everything was good!
Rex's teaching style can leave room for some slacking or neglect in reading. He only cracked down on the class when no one understood the reading, but seemed okay with a few students talking most of the time. This may seem a little draconian, but calling on people other than the chatterboxes could have allowed Rex to get a grasp on who was understanding the reading and who wasn't so he could help them.
readings he chose were a little challenging

19. Other comments:
Rex does a great job with keeping us engaged and interested which really made me learn from and enjoy this course far more than I expected.
Thank you for the knowledge, when I become president please apply for secretary of state.
Despite the fact that he is a graduate student, I believe with conviction that Professor Troumbley is a great asset to the political sciences department here at UH, and I would gladly take another course taught by him.
I was skeptical at first, but this course really altered how I look at certain elements of America's political and legal system.
Bummed that he will not be teaching here anymore. I would have loved to have taken him for another class! Probably, one of the smartest people that I have ever met. Good luck in Texas Professor Troumbley.
Overall, Rex is a great teacher and I wish he was here at the University to stay. He was very inspirational and helped those who came to him for help maximize their potential. I don't know if I could have done my current research proposal without him. Best of luck to him and I hope he gets better and better.

I took this class because of minor requirements. Also because the class time worked well.
Political Science major- required course, repeat.

POLS Major; very clear, very understanding and better then most in I've had in the past. He is young and patient with his time. Would make an excellent proffessor to the UH 'Ohana. If you want a fare understanding into the political thought process. This will be the professor to take where ever he teaches.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Rex is extremely knowledgeable about every topic he covers, shares new insight, and has a relatable teaching style. He's just amazing!
Very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Tries to be as enthusiastic as much possible. Involved students to read in class and share.
Very intelligent. I can tell he has read these political theorists many times. I think he is the most informed about the subject of political thinkers.
He really knew what he was talking about and would spend as much time as he could clarifying and answering questions
Reading works from these prominent figures is indimidating but Rex did a great job in helping us understand the concepts. Discussions in class helped all of us find the deeper meaning of what was written and how it affects how we all think today.
His proficient oversight into Political Philosophy, and his ability to really help the students succeed in this class.
Rex was very knowledgeable about the subject and is willing to help students at all times with anything. He helped me on my reading critique and final project so I am grateful for opening up his office hours to his students.
Rex took the reading material apart and explained the importance of the text.
He knew his material, showed up (on time) to class every time. Always prepared, and he is very knowledgable in the subject.
Rex managed to teach us the extremely abstract ideas of political philosophies in a clear, thorough manner, making sure we all understood the material. He was extremely helpful and always answered everyone's questions, and he did so in a way that really challenged us to think more critically and engage ourselves during the lectures. Rex was also very encouraging and always eager to help.
communication is key, and he got a bunch of skills to do that effectively.
He made the most complicated concepts, from the books that we read, very easy to understand and was always prepared no matter what
his knowledge on the subject
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Probably the heavy workload of reading but honestly, I can't criticize anything about his teaching style
Not enough time in class to understand the readings, sometimes we went overtime.
Sometimes trying to provoke answers from the class was more time-wasting than productive. Also not sure that reading aloud is the most effective strategy. It's really hard to reread the passage and glean the meaning from it when someone else is reading the same thing aloud.
Sometimes, it seemed like he was spoonfeeding us concepts that let some people who did not do the reading (myself included for some days) off the hook. But then again, any help at explaining concepts was appreciated so I guess this wasn't that bad.

He is not a professor at UH and they will lose someone very good for the department of political science, if they do not make room for him.
Not much, but every once in a while he wouldnt really answer a question just kind of say, were getting there but never really bring it up later

19. Other comments:
Subject was somewhat hard to understand wish there were more ways to get a better understanding of the readings.
Good teacher, he's lively and very knowledgeable.
good teacher, time and experience will make him an excellent to the political science department.
This is the second time I have to take this course. The first time I took it was with another professor, and Rex's teaching style allowed every student to feel at a comfortable environment to participate and ask questions. I learned a lot more with Rex then I did with the other professor. I would definitely recommend this course- taught by Rex to my fellow peers.
In this course, we were taught not only the history of political thought, but also other skills which could be used later in the future, such as analysis of rhetoric, critical thinking, public speaking, proper note-taking, organization, and writing skills.
Uh always fails in insider politics. The fat cat syndrome, like any University. Please keep this guy around longer. He Judt might be your gden egg.
Great professor really enjoyed this class
really enjoyed this class and the style of teaching

I want to be a POLS minor and heard good things about Rex. It also fit really well into my schedule.
I needed to make up a failed grade.
its a requirement to take this course before graduating from the University. This course really educated me on the USA political system with other developing world countries especially my country, Vanuatu in the south part of pacific. I love this course and who the instructor delivering his notes really to the point and into depth.
was just interested in polysci
I was interested in political science and I am undeclared. I am thinking about majoring in political science.
It fulfilled a requirement
I was interested in Political Science and wanted to get an into to decide whether or not I wanted to minor or double major in it.
I like politics
I took it as a gen ed class but it was very informative and eye opening.
Fulfilled requirement
I was thinking of adding Political Science as a major and now that I have taken the class, I definitely want to add it as my second major.
It fulfilled a focus designation and seemed interesting
It fulfilled my requirement as a POLS minor.
I chose to take this class because it is required for my Social Work Major.

17. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He doesn't give you answers all the time and that makes you want to learn more on your own. He is incredibly insightful about the material he gives to us and is extremely through in ensuring our understanding of the material. I hope he keeps teaching and I hope to have him again.
He very obviously cared about the class and put in every effort to make sure that students were getting the most possible out of this class. I have not had a professor in a very long time who seemed to put in as much conscious effort into the class as Rex has. Great professor!
He respond to question very professionally and accurately. He is really understand what he teaches He was a very helpful and always on time for class.. He was very full of respect..
always open to help and explain subject to students
He is very energetic
the different methods he used to teach us the material. Like movies, prezi, readings, ect.
He was a new kind of teacher who could get you really interested in the subject matter. Instead of just being some boring, crusty old lecturer, he was truly a teacher in tune with the current times, evidenced both in terms of the subject matter itself, and also how he taught it.
very approachable
He taught us a lot about government and how they essentially control everything.
Leniency
He knew how to explain difficult content. He knows how to teach without getting boring and knows a lot about the content.
Learning the fundamental terminology in political science helped me out a lot with my other classes.
He likes to take the readings step by step. It does help for him to explain it because reading some of the material seems confusing until he explains it. He is also straight up about how he teaches & it makes it funny to be in class and to see him give advice about the best way to study and remember things. And on a personal note, he does care about his students. Talking to him one-on-one is the best way to get better understanding of the course as well.
Rex was an awesome professor, one of the few at UH who actually seemed to care. I learned a lot about Political Science because of him and I have become a lot more interested in the subject
18. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Group projects didn't seem to really be a useful project based on the material we learned in class, we really could have done without it.
n/a
He was somethings put some readings that is too difficult to read and understand..
Not too many things we get graded on so I was unsure of my grade in the class.
the lectures were sometimes too long and draggy.
He would often ask very broad, albeit important, thought-provoking questions that most people in the class couldn't or wouldn't answer, which would lead to maybe only two or three of the same people answering most of the questions. I feel like he could've done a better job at fostering discussions so that the entire class may be able to gain a broader understanding of the subject matter.
in the beginning of the semester it was confusing on how grading would go.
it was all helpful.
Tests
He wasn't in class a few weeks before the final, but he came back and picked up right where he left off and did a good job preparing us.
The grading system is kind of flawed - there is a lot of weight put on very few assignments. My grades on those assignments don't represent my understanding of the information presented in the course.
The pace he works at is kind of speedy. And he does not provide enough random group work around the classroom. Just because i like to get to know other people in the class.
NOTHING HE's AMAAAAAZING

17. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The discussions we have on the readings everyday.
Was able to answer questions when the material was confusing, available to students.
Rex knows his subject well for a extremely complex and difficult subject .. he also made it interesting.
He kept everything interesting. It felt more like talking to your really smart friends rather than your teacher.
Very quick to respond by email.
he was very clear and understanding. One of the smartest professors i've ever had at any level of education. Covers all the material with in class readings in which everyone participates.
his way of explaining things to the students about things they may not understand, so he does a good job of clarifying it until you understand it.
Rex is funny and is very relatable
His passion for the subject matter
Rex's ability to be relatable as well as incredibly knowledgeable about the subject material. He also was not quick to ignore or not comprehend certain peoples answers as well as he did not shoot down peoples answers when they were not completely right.
Always tries to make sure everyone understands
He does a very good job at engaging the class and breaking down complex ideas.
Rex knows the class material EXTREMELY well. Not only that, but Rex is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever come across in my academic career. He's also very articulate, and was able to explain the class material very well, and in ways that were relevant to today's current events.
Passionate about subject
Rex like to use current events to help us understand text's written in the 1800's. He also very understanding.
class discussions
His knowledge of the course content and also his demeanor. Very relatable and great at understanding the needs of students.
His knowledge of the course and how excited he is about teaching the course made me want to stay engaged in the material.
18. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
N/A
Our lecture slides or lackthereof.
does not apply
We read a lot and by the end of the semester it is hard to even remember the text we looked at in the beginning.
Nothing. Teaches they way you should teach
I feel the exams he gives us should be longer.
N/a
Nothing.
Talks fast
Nothing negative about Rex. But I do feel that this class would be far better as a MWF class
Lots of books
There were too many required text and should of been more precise on which pages to read or parts and maybe have questions for us to take home and answer while reading.
class discussions
A lot of reading, don't know if this can be broken up better maybe???

I only rated this course good because the subject matter is not a topic i would have chosen but is required for the degree... I feel that Rex did a fantastic job on his part to make the difficult and archaic subject content teachable and interesting. I feel that he knows the subject well..
The instructor helped student get involved with the class by letting each of us read to the class as part of his effort to achieve greater student involvement.
I enjoyed pols 335. I'm so glad I decided to take this class with Rex
Rex is the man!
He made it as interesting as possible and I am happy we have freedom in picking a question for our final paper
This was probably one of the best POLS courses I've taken. Rex is a true academic who provided a wide variety of content. He did a GREAT job explaining the readings and bringing in classroom participation. I thought I wouldn't enjoy this class at first but definitely changed my mind.
Great teacher.

16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Rex displayed excellent use of technology and always had things embedded into his prezis or had the file ready to be played.
How he relates to the students
He gave several resources which made work extremely manageable, as well as giving a comfortable classroom setting.
His Prezi powerpoints were very organized and helped alot. Also, all of the clips and videos he showed us in class were interesting and further engaged all of the students in the subject matter.
He was able to make the class laugh and was interested in his topics. Even though the students sucked he still managed to make it interesting
I thought he explained the material interestingly and in a way I hadn't heard it explained to me before. The prezis he used too presented the information in an interesting way. He seems to really think the material is interesting which makes it interesting for student, I felt.
His reply to my questions when I e-mailed him we actually helpful. A lot of times professors will semi ignore the questions or give me a short unhelpful answer.
The most helpful thing that I personally experienced, was the fact that once I asked a question or emailed him a concern, he wouldn't only address it but also make sure that if I had any other questions to contact him. Going a step further, he also extended himself to questions or concerns outside the class such as dealing with other professors and course loads.
approachability, has good rapport with class. Good use of technology, particularly the use of Prezi presentations.
Prezi's
Really takes the time to make sure students fully understand
Easy to talk to. And materias he uses.
17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He did a lot of lecturing and listening instead of group communication. It seemed like it was more one to one than as a group under the professor.
nothing
The awkward pauses or lack of class participation.
It's not Rex, but the class itself was very quiet all of the time. It was difficult to talk and the pressure to talk was there. More engaging ways for the students to talk and interact would be very beneficial.
He wasnt great at facilitating class discussions.
Although they can be very helpful sometimes I would get lost in the Prezis.
The least helpful thing about the course and not necessarily Troumbley, was that our grade relied on only 3 big assignments.
The final paper was too overly specific to write 10 pages on.
Text Book
The paper topics were very broad and some of the readings were way to long
The way he asks questions. Sometimes too hard to understand what he means by the questions.

Good job?
The only issue that Professor Troumbley had was returning assignment grades in a timely manner, other than that he was an excellent teacher and very knowledgeable

I loved how he didn't use just normal powerpoints but videos, clips of TV shows, and Prezis.
