17. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Rex like to use current events to help us understand text's written in the 1800's. He also very understanding.
Rex knows the class material EXTREMELY well. Not only that, but Rex is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever come across in my academic career. He's also very articulate, and was able to explain the class material very well, and in ways that were relevant to today's current events.
Rex knows his subject well for a extremely complex and difficult subject .. he also made it interesting.
He does a very good job at engaging the class and breaking down complex ideas.
His knowledge of the course and how excited he is about teaching the course made me want to stay engaged in the material.
class discussions
Passionate about subject
His knowledge of the course content and also his demeanor. Very relatable and great at understanding the needs of students.
his way of explaining things to the students about things they may not understand, so he does a good job of clarifying it until you understand it.
he was very clear and understanding. One of the smartest professors i've ever had at any level of education. Covers all the material with in class readings in which everyone participates.
Always tries to make sure everyone understands
He kept everything interesting. It felt more like talking to your really smart friends rather than your teacher.
His passion for the subject matter
Rex's ability to be relatable as well as incredibly knowledgeable about the subject material. He also was not quick to ignore or not comprehend certain peoples answers as well as he did not shoot down peoples answers when they were not completely right.
Rex is funny and is very relatable
Was able to answer questions when the material was confusing, available to students.
Very quick to respond by email.
The discussions we have on the readings everyday.
18. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
There were too many required text and should of been more precise on which pages to read or parts and maybe have questions for us to take home and answer while reading.
does not apply
Nothing negative about Rex. But I do feel that this class would be far better as a MWF class
A lot of reading, don't know if this can be broken up better maybe???
class discussions
Lots of books
I feel the exams he gives us should be longer.
Nothing. Teaches they way you should teach
Talks fast
We read a lot and by the end of the semester it is hard to even remember the text we looked at in the beginning.
Nothing.

I only rated this course good because the subject matter is not a topic i would have chosen but is required for the degree... I feel that Rex did a fantastic job on his part to make the difficult and archaic subject content teachable and interesting. I feel that he knows the subject well..
This was probably one of the best POLS courses I've taken. Rex is a true academic who provided a wide variety of content. He did a GREAT job explaining the readings and bringing in classroom participation. I thought I wouldn't enjoy this class at first but definitely changed my mind.
Great teacher.
The instructor helped student get involved with the class by letting each of us read to the class as part of his effort to achieve greater student involvement.
He made it as interesting as possible and I am happy we have freedom in picking a question for our final paper
Rex is the man!
I enjoyed pols 335. I'm so glad I decided to take this class with Rex

16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
approachability, has good rapport with class. Good use of technology, particularly the use of Prezi presentations.
Prezi's
The most helpful thing that I personally experienced, was the fact that once I asked a question or emailed him a concern, he wouldn't only address it but also make sure that if I had any other questions to contact him. Going a step further, he also extended himself to questions or concerns outside the class such as dealing with other professors and course loads.
Easy to talk to. And materias he uses.
He was able to make the class laugh and was interested in his topics. Even though the students sucked he still managed to make it interesting
I thought he explained the material interestingly and in a way I hadn't heard it explained to me before. The prezis he used too presented the information in an interesting way. He seems to really think the material is interesting which makes it interesting for student, I felt.
His Prezi powerpoints were very organized and helped alot. Also, all of the clips and videos he showed us in class were interesting and further engaged all of the students in the subject matter.
Really takes the time to make sure students fully understand
His reply to my questions when I e-mailed him we actually helpful. A lot of times professors will semi ignore the questions or give me a short unhelpful answer.
He gave several resources which made work extremely manageable, as well as giving a comfortable classroom setting.
How he relates to the students
Rex displayed excellent use of technology and always had things embedded into his prezis or had the file ready to be played.
17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The final paper was too overly specific to write 10 pages on.
Text Book
The least helpful thing about the course and not necessarily Troumbley, was that our grade relied on only 3 big assignments.
The way he asks questions. Sometimes too hard to understand what he means by the questions.
He wasnt great at facilitating class discussions.
It's not Rex, but the class itself was very quiet all of the time. It was difficult to talk and the pressure to talk was there. More engaging ways for the students to talk and interact would be very beneficial.
The paper topics were very broad and some of the readings were way to long
Although they can be very helpful sometimes I would get lost in the Prezis.
The awkward pauses or lack of class participation.
nothing
He did a lot of lecturing and listening instead of group communication. It seemed like it was more one to one than as a group under the professor.

I loved how he didn't use just normal powerpoints but videos, clips of TV shows, and Prezis.
The only issue that Professor Troumbley had was returning assignment grades in a timely manner, other than that he was an excellent teacher and very knowledgeable
Good job?

16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
His interest in the material, the way he got us interested in it, and the variety of ways he used to teach
He cares about his students and he possesses a genuine desire for them to learn and truly understand the material he teaches.
Knowledgeable, accessible, youthful and vigorous, Rex was anxious to teach and convey information and maintained a positive, welcoming disposition every day. Sincere yet playful, Rex made class exciting and- for me at least- ever novel and surprising. He also didn't waste time with group work, which is just about the least unproductive way to spend class time.
He explains things well and always gives the students a chance to answer the questions he ask without just saying it. The class isn't like a boring lecture, but is very discussion based.
Rex is such a funny guy, he makes learning about media and politics fun! I love the clips, music and history of all things regarding media. He is awesome, will definitely take more courses from him.
He helps me broaden my understanding of the subject that I never had.
Technology that he uses; movies, pictures and original presentations using prezi. He also introduced us to technologies which students can use, such as great citing tool zotero.
Rex is very knowledgable in both the material as well as in how students learn. He knows that we dont want to sit there and watch him chug through a powerpoint, and knows what it's like to be an undergrad. I found it very helpful that he was organized and used technology throughout his class. He was always easy to contact via email, and the media that he showed us was very helpful to engage me in the class. Additionally, I appreciated that Rex wasn't afraid to address topics that were in grey areas, as well as subjects that could make the class uncomfortable. Excellent class.
The way that if you had a question he would respond immediately and effectively.
he showed good movies
What I found most helpful in the class were the videos. They were very interesting and helped me to understand what the lecture was about.
I really appreciated all of the visual and video aides, because it made it much easier to understand the points about media he was trying to get across. Plus it was a lot more interesting than reading an ancient textbook that had very little tangibility to the modern political and media trends.
He is incredibly approchable and does an excellent job presenting information in unique and interesting ways.
17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The essays
I'm not entirely sure if this pertains to the instructor or the course, but I found the course goals of POLS 190 to be a bit vague. While we did cover a wide variety of material, the lack of cumulative progress markers (graded assignments, graded essays, exams) made it difficult to pin down exactly what we were supposed to be studying, aside from a vague description of "media and politics". Perhaps the course is still in an experimental phase and this will be fixed at a later point. I just found some course objectives to be either lackluster or completely absent, aside from a general education in area of media and politics. I also felt as though the course focused more on media as a whole, as opposed to politics and media and their interactions. I understand Mr. Troumbley's desire to branch out from beyond the typical methods of media and politics (television, newspaper, etc), but I often felt as though this led to a detachment of media and politics. The course could have been described as a media studies course, as politics often appeared to be an afterthought, with a class period spent discussing media and its effect on our lives, and only a single question of "How does this pertain to politics?" thrown out amidst the class discussion. Overall, both the course material and the professor were interesting and stimulating, though I felt that both could use a bit of refinement in terms of focusing their goals and objectives. While I know I learned things in POLS 190 throughout the course of this semester, I often found myself pondering "just what did I learn in class" when reflecting upon the fifty-minute educational period.
He is VERY valuable. He also really helped me out when i had a problem with my personal life, Rex was understanding and conducive to my success.
I don't think the books were that necessary.
nothing
I liked pretty much everything he did in the class.
During class debates he does leave things vague so students can answer, sometimes the vagueness can leave students confused though.
nothing
During the first half of the semester, there wasn't a lot of discussions on the topics at hand. It was kind of confusing at first and it really seemed one-sided with the ideas that were given. While I enjoyed hearing about the things we aren't used to, I didn't like the feeling that it was either we agreed to the theories given or we were wrong.
Nothing comes to mind.
His assignments were sometimes slightly unclear.

See above. I may have been a bit long-winded.
I guess my only problem of understanding this course was language difficulty since the many classes were based on discussions. But the topic was interesting to me, and this course made me think about media differently and rethink what I ignored and took for granted.
Young teacher with a bright future in this course
Great course! I wish it was 2 days a week though...3 days is hard for any class
i like this class
Mr. Troumbley should dress more professionally so it would look like he enjoys coming to class.
As long as the political and media content is routinely updated to the patterns of the changing world, I have no complaints about this class as a whole.
Excellent work!
