13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is definitely great at what he dose.
He is very nice, patient, and smart.
Educated and well connected about/to the deaf community in Hawaii and Deaf culture in general.
His knowledge about and network in deaf community and his positive, approachable characteristics.
Made the class room a fun place to learn. Lots of giggles.
Energetic, made the class fun, communication during class was good
He is a great teacher and knew how to help each student out.
He is pretty funny and actually seems to enjoy teaching people ASL. He also seems to do his best to make sure people know they are doing a sign well in class when he can and if he catches it.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
If he comes across any blind people again I feel the best thing to do is talk to the student and find out what they need from you the teacher. Every student is different and requires cert-on attentions. I truly enjoyed his class. Thank you Brian.Antonia G & TenZen
Have us grade and correct some of our assignments, quizzes and tests in class. This would allow us to get feedback sooner, learn from our mistakes, and ease some of the load of grading on the teacher. We can grade the easy things like vocabulary, places, and number. Use the entire class time and do more activities in groups rather than one at a time. Doing activities one at a time, some people are chosen to practice/participate while others are not. I feel the best way to learn is to practice, and I felt the group activities were more helpful. Also, we pay for the class to be 1 hour and 55 minutes. I feel we got gipped from our learning experience. Furthermore, ending class early resulted in us having to cram future lessons.
Please be more organized and available to students.
Grading our homework prior to test/ quiz/ finials.
Possibly grade the homework faster and give feedback if needed. Also, to try to followup on emails from students. I know people get busy and sidetracked but making sure to check the emails and followup with students would be great.
Nothing really
Assignment feed backs are a bit slow, replies to emails are a bit slow, and it's kind of hard to get in contact with him really. Other than that, I think he's pretty much like other teachers.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
he would give you hands on when their was concerns.
He would repeat the sign if people did not catch it the first time.
He allowed people to make up exams and sick days.
in the class was responsive to the students questions and needs.
I'm not quite sure. I never received any emails so I assume there were no concerns.
He helped everyone and didn't mind going over when someone didn't understand.
He was really understanding about if we were sick or had conflicting schedules to turn in the homework on time or anything like that. It really helped because not a lot of teachers are as understanding and causes a lot of stress.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes I would because it's fun and your not thinking that you are learning something about you and for you and others that benefit from all this too.
Yes and No. He is really nice, but he does not grade assignments or tests in a timely manner. He also ends class early when he could be teaching us more. We are paying him for our education. He spent a few days reviewing vocabulary that was in the book and on the DVD. I felt it was a huge waste of my time and money. He was also going to delay the midterm when we spent days reviewing the material. Also, because we spent days reviewing what was already on the DVD, we had to cram future material because we were short on time due to the time we spent reviewing and ending classes early.
Yes, good knowledge of ASL and clear communication, however, you do need to see him in person. He is not very available outside of class times. But he grades fairly.
Yes, I would highly recommend his classes. His instructions are very clear and easy to follow. This is important because there are so many different ways of expressing the same word in ASL.
yes i'd recommend but solely for the actual class, not the 'home' work aspect or grading wise.
Yes, I would recommend Brien Nakamoto to students. He's a great teacher that made the class fun. It was a class you never wanted to miss.
Yes I would, because he is fun, makes the class very interesting, and it's really easy to learn from him.
I would totally recommend him for other students. He was a good teacher, fun, and did his best.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Sometimes he seemed disorganized and confused when he looked at the material he was to teach us during class. It was as if he had no clue what he was supposed to teach and was acquainting himself with the material during the class period.
Thank you, Brien, for the great learning experience and introducing us to the local deaf community. I am making many nice friends. In the future, I would really like to have a career that support deaf community!!
Keep teaching but please give us grades and feedback sooner!
I'm a little sad that he won't be teaching us next semester but I'm sure we'll meet again.
Sometimes he signs things a bit differently each time, but I think that's more of a conflict of a more comfortable signing that is used in the public and the more 'rigid' signing that is supposed to be taught. Sort of how in speaking language classes, they tend to only teach you the polite way to talk with correct grammar instead of the way people just comfortably talk on the streets with slang or anything. But then that's a conflict for any language class I think.
18. Other comments:
Hopefully, he will improve as a teacher because he is very nice. I hope he saves the videos he posted this semester for the next time he teaches ASL 101 so that he does not have to spend time doing the same videos again. The videos that had material not on the DVD were really helpful. We had a few slower learners in our class so Brian had to slow down for them. This was very nice of him to do and he was very patient, but I feel it did hurt those of us who are able to learn at a good speed.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Obviously, Brien knows his subject very well which is a great strong suit, but as a general teacher, He is a very clear and informative. Always willing to share as much information on a subject even if it's not required for the course.
Helps you understand the material being teached
he was very caring and helpful; never made any student feel stupid or bad; always willing to review and answer necessary questions. He knew the material well! :]
He's very helpful when we have questions and is very good at supporting us and letting us know when we're doing well during class.
He is very patient and very understanding.
The pick up signs as you go or ask method seem to do well.
Friendly, approachable, really sweet. He made learning ASL enjoyable and fun and respond to emails faster.
He is very knowledgable of the subject and is very vibrant and energetic in class. He is also very patient with students when we get confused or lost, and goes back and explains until we understand.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Maybe organization with the homework. I got confused about the due dates of the assignments quite often, but I enjoyed this class incredibly overall
have more ASL games
have a schedule pre-made for the class.
I wish assignments were open in a more timely manner. I like to get my assignments done ahead of time and when the sections are not open I am unable to post them. I have to keep checking to see if they've been opened often and it can get frustrating. There were also times I almost missed the due date because I had done the assignment so long ago and was unaware when the section was opened.
The ASL grammar seems to elude me.
Please PLEASE remember to post assignments up on Moodle.
Uploading assignments could be a little better, maybe a general syllabus schedule of how the semester will go according to chapters and when things are due.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He would always take the time to explain something, and he helped even the quite students feel comfortable, encouraged, and involved,
really cares about his students
responded to emails in a timely manner; if he forgot to post (open) the homework he would extended the date and explain if we had any questions
Very well. He's an awesome teacher.
By signing his worry and concerns whether it be in our lateness, grades or other.
Emailed students for any issues, talked to them before or after class.
He is very patient and looks for understanding of the new signs from each person.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Absolutely. He was very encouraging and light-hearted which is great when learning a second language.
YES! HE'S SO MUCH FUN!
HECK YES! best teacher ever! very funny and caring; made the lessons fly by!
Yes definitely. He makes learning ASL fun and entertaining!
Definitely!
Yes, he teaches in a friendly sort of easy atmosphere that's conducive to learning. I like how everybody in the class knows each other and gets together.
HELL YES :] no further reason needed. Just a must have ASL professor, you will be glad to have!
This is my second semester with Mr. Nakamoto and I enjoy having him as a teacher mainly because he is patient, goes at a good pace, and makes class fun.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Absolutely an awesome teacher. I've learned sign language from many interpreters, but Brien is a great teacher. He makes a long class at the end of the day enjoyable while still accomplishing the tasks needed to get done.
He has a very friendly personality; i thought i would be intimidated in his class because i was used to the lower level and i'm not very good at my language but when i took his class, i became comfortable quickly :)
Can't think of anything at the moment.
He makes learning ASL enjoyable and fun. He was sweet to everyone in class and he was understandable for any issues we had. He is an awesome and loveable professor!

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He is very personable! He also allows the students to think and "get it." He's very patient and I think when we didn't understand each other we'd laugh instead of roll eyes and get frustrated which was a great encouragement that I needed to get through the class, and it being a first introduction class is definitely a plus! He is very clear on what he is trying to say, and he knows when we understand and when we dont just by the looks on our faces.
He was very knowledgeable in this area of teaching. He kept student engaged by doing group work, one-on-one, and occasionally using humor.
I think being deaf enabled us to learn ASL because it forced us to be in a Deaf environment for the entire class.
He seems to enjoy and take pride in his profession.
He is very patient and willing to work with you. He encourages you to learn and provides with the resources and help to properly do so.
Very ethusiastic about teaching. Made students practice material.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
No suggestions.
Not having the Deaf events mandatory.
No changes needed, ASL 101 is an excellent course.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He showed concern after every class, he would ask if we have ANY questions. From forgetting a sign we might've forgotten or trying to learn a new sign. He also made sure that we always knew what assignments were and when they were due. He always checked in on us during events we attended making sure we were understanding other people that were deaf. He also allowed us to ask him for tutors if we weren't grasping the content very well, and he assured us that he'd help us even when he wasn't our teacher.
He answered all questions by students.
Answered emails promptly
Communication between student and teacher is well.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes definitely! He helped me very well get along with deaf people as well as learn a new language that can help a lot of people out in this world. I definitely appreciate how he signs and goes at a slower pace for people who can hear and are learning, as a teacher he is helping more deaf people to understand that we're all not experts at first, and only with practice will we get better. He helped me feel comfortable with the language and practicing outside of class, when I would run into him in the mall or if I saw someone that was deaf and ended up knowing him. He is known in the deaf community by a lot and a lot of people know that he is a good teacher and that when you mention his name, they try to help him by helping his students learn and practice outside of class. He makes you feel like you can do it, and he is really positive. He allows everyone in class to get a chance, that way everyone gets as much practice as possible in the time you have. And if you have any questions his english is very good! reaching him through email is no problem! He responds quickly and he is very flexible with your schedule if you have work and can't make an assignment or an event, he'll offer a different alternative for you.
I would recommend Mr. Nakamoto to other students because he is a great teacher and it has been a pleasure being a student in his class. His teaching methods are great. I was unsure of how it would go but he is able to communicate very well with the students.
Yes! Great teacher, very helpful and nice
Yes, he is a great teacher and is passionate about the ASL language. He is very patient and very helpful.
yes, very good teacher and knows the material well.

18. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
He has many strengths as a teacher! He does well with people any age, and he is always on his computer, so he is always checking emails, replying, posting videos sampling signs for exams. He truly goes above and beyond what other teachers I have do.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Very knowledgeable in subject
As a deaf person Mr.Nakamoto obviously knows the language very well. He could answer any question we had about old signs, new signs, signs we didn't understand etc. He was a very interactive teacher and encouraged us all. I think his biggest strength was his attitude towards the students. He's the type of teacher that makes you feel safe to ask questions without the fear of feeling stupid. If you get something wrong he doesn't single you out or anything and that made learning a lot more fun.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
none
No changes. Maybe submit the homework in class instead of moodle because it's easier.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
He encouraged class participation and constantly asked if we had any question, understood the content, or told us to contact him or meet with him if we needed help.
He always encouraged us to practice and learn. He showed concern by making sure we knew the signs before the big exams because he wanted us to get the best grade possible.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. He's fun and very personable.
yes!!! friendly, caring, funny, smart. great teacher!
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Awesome teacher.
