EDEA 704, Advanced
Qualitative Research will be offered Spring Semester, 2007.
Instructor: Dr. Joanne Cooper
When: Tuesdays, 4:30 to 7pm
Description
This course is designed to take you beyond the basics of Qualitative
Research in educational organizations. Prerequisite courses include EDEA
604, TECS 632 or comparable introductory qualitative research methods courses.
As an advanced methods course, EDEA 704 will present an in-depth look at framing
qualitative inquiry, examining philosophical underpinnings for research related
to particular studies, and comparing and contrasting the five basic traditions
in qualitative inquiry. We will cover new directions in qualitative
research, such as critical, narrative, feminist, constructivist and
interpretivist approaches. Finally, we will examine issues of
interpretation, evaluation and representation in conducting qualitative
research, as well as future developments in the field. I expect students
to bring in their individual research topics and projects at various stages of
development. Collectively, we will wrestle with the problems faced by
researchers and spend time writing reflectively about their role in the
qualitative process.
