Graduate Tuition (and Fee)

In the University of Hawaii system, the tuition and fees differ among the various colleges, as well as among the undergraduate and graduate and even between the types of graduate levels. Tuition and fees for other than the current academic year have not yet been established. All tuition and fee charges at the University of Hawaii campuses are subject to change in accordance with the requirements of State law and/or action by the Board of Regents or the University administration.

The tuition is based upon the number of credit hours, and currently is set at $168 for residents and $415 for non-residents per credit hour. Fees consist of various charges assigned to Campus Center Board, Student Activities and Program Fee Board, Board of Publications, Broadcast Communications Authority (there is a student-operated FM radio station on campus), and the Graduate Student Organization. The fees are assessed over and above tuition. The specific future amounts of such fees are not known at the time of this writing, but will likely range between $51and $59 for residents and non-residents alike.

In the following table, the Fall 2000 tuition and fees for a single credit-hour, and those for a typical 1-, 2-, or 3-course load are offered as a guide for estimation of expenses

Pre-registration

Because special codes are needed to register in any of the departmental courses (to confirm students' eligibility), pre-registration is required for each semester and summer session. Departmental pre-registration may be done by e-mail (etec-prereg@hawaii.edu), or in person.

Phone-Assisted Enrollment (PA'E)

All registration is done by a telephone system called PA`E which in Hawaiian means "to strike the ear, as a distant sound." The UH meaning is Phone-Assisted Enrollment, and functions as a voice-response computer system that allows the registrants to use a touch-tone telephone as a terminal. Payments may be made by providing PA`E with the MasterCard or VISA number and the account expiration date. This is the most efficient way to complete the registration process. It is also possible to pay in person at the Cashier's Office during the announced hours, and by the well-advertised deadlines. Non-payment on time automatically cancels the registration. The phone number for registration (PA`E) is 296-6723.

Registration on the Internet is now possible, at http://www.pae.hawaii.edu/. PA`E on the Web has all the features of the touch-tone phone system, plus: a. complete instructions for each option can be seen at one time, and b. registration schedule and payment information may be printed.
