BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL GUIDELINES

HDOH - Approved Biowaste Facilities

BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINATED SHARPS:
    Hypodermic Needles with attached:
      - Syringes (Barrels & Plungers)
      - Tubing, (butterfly, etc.)
    Blades (Scalpels, Razors, Lancets).
RED SHARPS CONTAINERS --› Strap lid with filament tape --› Label with P.I. name, location, and emergency phone number --› Autoclave --› Place in blue and orange "Treated Biowaste" container (Locations)
CHEMICAL CONTAMINATED SHARPS:
    Needles with attached:
      - Syringes (Barrels & Plungers)
      - Tubing, etc.
    Blades (Scalpels, Razors, Lancets).
Rinse with water & collect rinsate --› Deposit sharps into yellow/opaque sharps container --› Label with P.I. name, location, and emergency phone number
Rinsate --› See HMMP guidelines for disposal
Sharps disposal --› Place in blue and orange "Treated Biowaste" container (Locations)
BIOLOGICAL & CHEMICAL CONTAMINATED SHARPS See HMMP guidelines for evaluation of your particular waste stream. (Note: Most chemicals will inactivate biologics)

BIOLOGICAL Non-vendor sharps container (i.e., Double bag lined corrugated box or capable plastic container: i.e. recycled detergent bottles): Label with P.I. name, location, and emergency phone number --› Autoclave --› Box --› Dumpster.
CHEMICAL Yellow / Opaque Sharps container: Treat as Chemical contaminated Sharps
OR
Non-vendor sharps container (i.e., Double bag lined corrugated box or capable plastic container: i.e. recycled detergent bottles): double bag container --› Label with P.I. name, location, and emergency phone number --› Dumpster.
Any pipets contaminated both by biohazard and by hazardous chemicals See HMMP guidelines for evaluation of your particular waste stream. (Note: Most chemicals will inactivate biologics)
  
BIOHAZARDOUS LIQUIDS WITHOUT HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS:
    - Liquid Tissue Culture Media
    - Animal or Human Blood and Blood elements
    - Animal or Human Body Fluids

Autoclave --› Screen particulate --› Treat particulate as SOLID BIOLOGICAL WASTE --› Flush remaining Liquid down the drain.

BIOHAZARDOUS LIQUIDS WITH HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS:
    (i.e.: Cyclohexamide, Cyanides)

Screen particulate (should be rendered sterile from chemical) --› Treat particulate as SOLID BIOLOGICAL WASTE (see below) --› Dumpster

CLEAN BROKEN GLASS
    (not exposed to biohazardous or chemical wastes)
Place taped and labeled (GLASS DISCARD) broken glass boxes --› in trash or at a designated Recycling Locations
SOLID BIOLOGICAL WASTE
    Petri Dishes / Tissue Culture Flasks,
    Gloves
    All other items contaminated with biohazardous materials:
    - Contaminated Paper Towels, Kim Wipes, Bench Paper
Use double red autoclave bags --› Autoclave --› Label with P.I. name, location, and emergency phone number. Delete/obliterate universal biohazard symbol --› Place in double clear plastic bags --› Dumpster.

UNPRESERVED TISSUES, WHOLE BODY AND BODY PARTS
    (Vertebrate, invertebrate and regulated plants/soils)

HUMAN BODY PARTS AND ORGANS (recognizable)

Procedures for disposal of Unpreserved specimens, -- Invertebrate, -- Plants/soils -- Human body parts and organs

BIOHAZARDOUS-CHEMOTOXIC MIXED WASTE
    (Neoplastic, Genotoxic, Pharmaceutical Experimental Drugs) Not exceeding 1% of total weight
Incinerate. Contact: Hawaii Medical Vitrification
