    GENERAL BIOLOGICAL SAFETY

  • Registry of all biological research (etiological agents with Biosafety Level 2 or greater organisms).
  • Inspection and rating of all biological laboratory according to CDC-NIH guidelines.
  • Review and evaluate biological research activities and grant proposal for safe use and disposal of biological agents and materials.
  • Establish standard operating and emergency procedures.

    RECOMBINANT-DNA TECHNOLOGY

  • Maintain a registry of all recombinant DNA research.
  • Inspect all laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse, and field site according to USDA, NIH, EPA, and FDA guidelines.
  • Review and evaluate R-DNA research activities and grant proposal for safe use and disposal of recombinant agents and materials.
  • Establish adequate standard operating and emergency procedures.
  • Member of the UH Institutional Biosafety Committee and State Genetically Modified Organisms Committee.

    BIOLOGICAL CONTAINMENT EQUIPMENT CERTIFICATION

  • Test and certify biological safety cabinets according to NSF and Federal Standards.
  • Keep track by monitoring sterilizers and autoclaves.

    INDOOR AIR QUALITY

  • Sample for airborne microbes, (fungus and bacteria).
  • Inspection of ventilation system
  • Assessment of adequacy of ventilation system.
  • Survey building occupants to determine extent of possible IA problems

    BIOLOGICAL SAFETY TRAINING

  • Bloodborne Pathogen and Biological Agent Standard.
  • HIV/HBV Awareness
  • Occupational Exposure to Tuberculosis.
  • Infectious/Biohazardous Waste Management
  • Basic Microbiological Safety Practices and Techniques.
  • U.S. Dept. of Transportation Regulations - Shipping and Receiving
