Procedures for Disposal of Chemically Preserved
Animal Carcasses and Tissues

(Vertebrate and Invertebrate)



  1. Tissues, body parts and carcasses must be separated from any liquids. Liquid preservatives (i.e. Formalin) should be screened to eliminate all solid material and may be regulated as a hazardous waste, please contact the Hazardous Materials Management Program (HMMP) at x63198 for proper disposal procedure for these liquids.

  2. Preserved tissues must first be thoroughly rinsed and dried prior to wrapping. Wrap tissues/carcasses in newspaper or other absorbent material.

  3. Wrapped tissues (10 lbs. or less) should be double bagged and sealed in plastic. No free liquid should be present in the bags.

  4. Identify bags with: P.I. name, location (department), and emergency phone number, weight and a label indicating contents.

  5. Contact the University's Buildings and Grounds Management Office at 956-7922 for drop off procedures and locations.

 
NOTE:
This procedure is for disposal of SMALL QUANTITIES (less that 10 lbs.). LARGER QUANTITIES -- (more than 10 lbs.) will necessitate different procedures. Please call Buildings and Grounds Management Office at 956-7922 for evaluation and recommendations on your particular situation.

Procedures for Disposal of Unpreserved
Animal Carcasses and Tissues

(Vertebrate and Invertebrate)



  1. Tissues, body parts and carcasses must be separated from any liquids. Liquid should be screened to eliminate all solid material. Unpreserved liquids can be discarded down the drain.

  2. Wrap tissues/carcasses in newspaper or other absorbent material.

  3. Wrapped tissues (10 lbs. or less) should be double bagged and sealed in plastic. No free liquid should be present in the bags.

  4. Identify bags with: P.I. name, location (department), and emergency phone number, weight and a label indicating contents.

  5. Contact the University's Biological Safety Program (x63197) for specifics on procedures and drop off locations or contact the University's Laboratory Animal Service (x68770) (there may be a fee for the disposal for Non-LAS users).

Procedures for Disposal of Regulated Plants and Soils


  1. See your DOA and/or USDA permit conditions for proper method of disposal for your particular regulated plant materials.

Disposal of Human Body Parts and Organs (recognizable)


  1. Disposal of identifiable human body parts and organs with a death certificate must conform to the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, please call Anatomy and Reproductive Biology at 956-3171 for proper procedures.

  2. Human body parts, organs and tissues without a death certificate must be disposed of through an DOH approved medical waste disposal service. One such service that can handle this type of medical waste is Hawaii Medical Vitrification. Please contact them at (808) 532-0512 or send email concerning your particular waste disposal needs.
