Program Description

The Institute of Intensive English was established in 1984 on the campus of Chaminade University in Honolulu to help international students gain the language proficiency required to enter a college or university in the U.S. Since then, IIE has expanded over the years to include short-term and long-term General English courses, TOEFL, TOEIC and Cambridge preparation courses, summer kids and teen programs, conversation-style café classes, as well as a recognized university-bridge program. Now located in Waikiki, a mere 5-minute walk from Waikiki Beach, IIE offers high quality, communicative instruction, and a full-range of international student services in convenient location.

 

Program Information

Length of Term: 4 weeks. However, new students may enroll on any Monday.

Calendar: IIE offers courses 52 weeks a year.

Average Class Size: 10-12 (15 max.)

Program Size: 80-200 students (seasonal)

 

Position Information

Categories of Positions: Director, Academic Director, Admissions Coordinator, Accommodations Coordinator (full-time), Instructor (full- and part-time positions).

Status of Positions: Full-time, part-time.

Required Qualifications: Undergraduate Degree, TESL Certification or significant ESL teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications: Minimum Undergraduate Degree, TESL Certification & at least 2 years ESL teaching experience

Usual Contract Period: 4 weeks.

Salary/Wage Range: Varies due to position, but the minimum wage is $19/hr. for instructors.

Benefits: Full-time staff and instructors receive medical and dental coverage.

Teaching Load: 8-28 classroom hours per week. Private lessons also available in lieu of or to supplement regular classroom hours.

Types of Courses: 6 levels of general communicative (with a focus on listening and speaking) English courses, TOEIC and TOEFL prep., special Kids' programs, Café conversation classes, private and semi-private instruction.

Other: In addition to our regular programs, we have frequent demands for private instruction on short notice. As such, we are always looking for enthusiastic instructors, even if those instructors are only available at certain times of the year or are just looking for a few hours a week to supplement their income. What to Include in Application Packet: Required: Résumé and cover letter highlighting experience and teaching philosophy. Include your desired schedule and any teaching preferences.

When to Apply: IIE is always accepting resumes for qualified instructors. If there are no openings to teach our regular courses, we are usually able to place qualified teachers with students requesting private lessons. This often helps our teachers become acquainted with the school before taking on a regular course when we have an opening.
