Program Description

KCC's ESOL Program consists of a one-semester, one level academic transition program for international students, and a larger, multi-level academic ESOL program serving the resident immigrant population, as well as advanced-level international students who have either placed into the program, or transitioned from the Intensive Program. The mission of the ESOL program is to prepare students for success in KCC's academic and vocational programs.   ESOL instructors may be required to teach in both programs.

The ESOL programs at KCC follow an integrated skills approach and content-based syllabus.

 

 

Program Information

Length of Term: 16 weeks, as per the UH academic calendar. We also offer a 10-week summer program.

Average Class Size: 15 students. Maximum enrollment is 22 students.

Program Size: Approximately 45 students per term for the Intensive Program, and about 300 (across 4 levels) for the credit ESOL program. Of these 300 students, approximately 60- 70 each term are new international students.

 

 

Position Information

Categories of Positions: Program Coordinators (Intensive Program and Credit Program), full-time and part time positions consistent with the UH system of position ranks.

Status of Positions: Full and part-time.

Required Qualifications: Typically a lecturer appointment requires an MA in ESL, SLS, TFL/TESL or Applied Linguistics with a TESOL focus.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching ESOL in academic settings,  experience living in a second culture, demonstrated excellence in teaching, extensive knowledge in ESOL pedagogy, theory, and practice.

Usual Contract Period: Consistent with UH, lecturers are hired on a per semester basis. instructors and various ranks of professor may follow either 9 or 11 month contracts.

Types of Courses: All EAP, academic ESOL, content-based courses with topics ranging from civil rights, to health, family, the environment, and food.
