Several programs fall under the "NICE umbrella":
Full-time, year-round intensive programs:
Intensive Spoken English (ISE): Focus on oral communication for academic and professional purposes.
English for Conversational Purposes (ECP): Conversational English instruction for social and recreational situations and for use in daily life.
Short programs:
Winter and Summer NICE: Focus on conversational English and American culture, including activities in the Honolulu community.
Evening program:
N.I.C.E. at Night: Designed for Hawai‘i's local international population, various courses are offered 1 or 2 evenings per week. Most classes are upper-level and target individuals who wish to improve their English for personal, professional, or academic purposes.
Length of Term:
Intensive Spoken English (ISE) -10 week sessions, 4 per year
English for Conversational Purposes (ECP) - 10 week sessions, 4 per year
Winter NICE - 3 weeks
Summer NICE - 3 weeks
NICE at Night - 12 week sessions, 3 per year
Calendar:
ISE and ECP courses begin in January, April, July, and October
Winter NICE - February
Summer NICE - late July-August
NICE at Night - begin in January, May and September
Average Class Size: Average 12; maximum 14
Program Size:
ISE: 65-80 students per session
ECP: 35-50 students per session
Winter NICE: 60-75 students per session
Summer NICE: 60-75 students per session
NICE at Night: 50-75 students per session
Categories of Positions: Director, Academic Coordinators, Instructors, Student Services Coordinator, Student Services Assistant, Educational & Academic Support Specialists, Student Office Assistants.
Status of Positions: Director and Academic Coordinators -- full-time, faculty specialists; other instructors -- all casual employees, hired on as-needed basis.
Required Qualifications: Master's degree in ESL or related field with course work in ESL; minimum of two years of successful, recent full-time experience teaching ESL in a classroom setting; experience in ESL curriculum development; proficiency in spoken and written English commensurate with his or her role as a language model (must be an exemplar of clear spoken English and must be easily understood by native speakers of English in Hawai‘i); a well-rounded, extensive knowledge of and experience with American culture; personal qualities which contribute to success as a classroom teacher; understanding of and respect for a diversity of students and cultural backgrounds; evidence of professional development and involvement in the field of ESL; OR equivalent of the above
Preferred Qualifications: Course work in education; successful experience teaching spoken ESL in an intensive ESL program; familiarity with existing ESL materials; overseas/cross-cultural experience; extensive experience learning a second/foreign language.
Note: Master's degree preferred, but not required, for short-term NICE and NICE at Night positions.
Usual Contract Period: Casual faculty contracted for length of session.
Salary/Wage Range:
ISE & ECP: up to $9,398.00 per 10-week session (depending on qualifications)
Winter & Summer NICE: $29.50 per hour
NICE at Night: up to $37.00 per hour (depending on qualifications)

Teaching Load:
ISE and ECP: 18-20 hours per week, plus some curriculum development responsibilities, faculty meetings.
Winter & Summer NICE: 18-20 hours per week
NICE at Night: most courses meet 2-4 hours per week
Types of Courses:
ISE: Oral Production, Integrated Skills, Business English, Grammar, Listening
ECP: Conversational Accuracy and Fluency; electives include listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, daily living skills.
Winter & Summer NICE: Conversational English & American culture.
NICE at Night: 10-12 courses offered each session, including skill-based courses (e.g., pronunciation, listening, oral fluency, reading), integrated skills, and content-based courses (e.g., business, American history and culture).
Application Process: New applications are accepted on an on-going basis.
For NICE 10-week sessions: Each term new applications are reviewed by a screening committee and considered along with former/current instructors. Candidates must meet minimum qualifications to be considered. New candidates may be invited for an interview with the committee. Recommendations for hiring are submitted to the dean of the college for approval each term.
For short-term programs and NICE at Night: Applications and interviews are handled by the program coordinator, who makes hiring recommendations to the dean.

When to Apply: Application deadline is generally approximately 6 weeks prior to beginning of each term.
