Special English Programs (S.E.P.) provides English language and American culture programs for groups of students from foreign educational institutions or companies. Each S.E.P. is uniquely designed to suit the needs, schedules, requirements and interests of the sponsoring organization.
The focus of the typical S.E.P. is on improving spoken English skills and on giving students an orientation to American/Hawaiian culture. Students have many opportunities to practice and use functional English in and out of the classroom, with teachers, University of Hawaii students, and with members of the University and Honolulu community.
Length of Term: Programs can range in length from a few days to several weeks, according to the group's schedule.
Calendar: Year-round start dates.
Average Class Size: Average 13; maximum 15
Program Size: Average of 500 students per calendar year.
Categories of Positions: Program Coordinators, Support staff, instructors, student assistants
Status of Positions: Program Coordinators-faculty specialists; instructors-all casual hire, hired on as-needed basis.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in ESL or related field; experience teaching spoken ESL in a classroom setting; proficiency in spoken and written English commensurate with his or her role as a language model; a well rounded, extensive knowledge of, and experience with various aspects of American and Hawaiian culture and society; evidence of personal qualities which contribute to success as a classroom teacher; understanding of and respect for a diversity of students and cultural backgrounds; ability to work well with others.
Preferred Qualifications: MA in ESL/related, or graduate work in ESL including curriculum development, second language acquisition, teaching methodology, lesson planning, etc.; successful, recent experience teaching conversational English in a classroom setting; familiarity with current ESL materials; evidence of recent professional development and involvement in the field of ESL; overseas/cross-cultural experience; some experience learning a second/foreign language.
Usual Contract Period: Contracted for length of program.
Salary/Wage Range: $29.50 per hour.

Teaching Load: 15-25 hours per week.
Types of Courses: Conversational English & American/Hawaiian culture; English for specific purposes.

Other: To be employed by the Special English Program, instructors will need to have a TB Clearance Certificate, documents that establish both identity and employment eligibility, and are required to participate in the PTS Deferred Compensation Retirement Plan if they are not eligible to participate in the State Employees' Retirement System.
