Note: The UHM Library subscribes to many journals in both paper and electronic formats. Use a database or index to locate articles. To find a specific journal title in electronic format, search the library's list of electronic journals. Use Hawaii Voyager to find paper (and some electronic) formats for specific journal titles. Academic Search Premier
Multi-disciplinary full text database containing full text for nearly 4,650 serials, including more than 3,600 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 8,200 journals.

 

America: History & Life Database Online
America: History and Life Database Online is a complete bibliographic reference to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to present. Published since 1964, the database comprises almost 400,000 bibliographic entries, over 2,000 journals indexed, approximately 6,000 citations of books and media reviews annually, and citations of dissertations. Every year approximately 16,000 new entries are added to the American History and Life database.

 

Anthropological Index Online
Anthropological Index Online is an index to periodicals in the Museum of Mankind Library, incorporating the former Royal Anthropological Institute library.

Home Economics Archive
HEARTH is a core electronic collection of books and journals in Home Economics and related disciplines. Titles published between 1850 and 1950 were selected and ranked by teams of scholars for their great historical importance. The first phase of this project focused on books published between 1850 and 1925 and a small number of journals. Future phases of the project will include books published between 1926 and 1950, as well as additional journals. The full text of these materials, as well as bibliographies and essays on the wide array of subjects relating to Home Economics, are all freely accessible on this site. This is the first time a collection of this scale and scope has been made available.

 

JSTOR Arts and Sciences I Collection
Provides full-text journal backfiles in various disciplines. The JSTOR project's primary goal is to build a reliable and comprehensive archive of important scholarly journal literature. Selected journals in the following subject areas are available: African-American Studies, Anthropology, Asian Studies, Ecology, Economics, Education, Finance History, Literature, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, Population Studies, Sociology and Statistics.

 

Making of America
Making of America (MoA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection currently contains approximately 9,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints. For more details about the project, see About MoA. Making of America is made possible by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.


Web of Science
A multidisciplinary index covering the journal literature of the sciences (Science Citation Index Expanded) as well as both the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Approximately 70% of the records have author abstracts. Online coverage from 1980 to present.

Dissertations & Theses (PQD&T) includes bibliographic citations for the doctoral and master's work of authors from more than 1,000 graduate schools and universities dating back to 1861. More than 750,000 dissertations and theses from 1997 on have been digitized and are available for PDF download.

About the American Studies Collection

 

The University of Hawaii at Manoa's American Studies collection is interdisciplinary in nature, comprising over 80,000 volumes and many serials drawn from American national and local history, economics, political science, and literature. Call number areas that include materials relevant to American Studies include:

While the majority of American Studies materials are located on the first floor (reference and periodicals) and the second floor (circulating materials), the Asian and Hawaii/Pacific collections on the fourth and fifth floors contain many useful materials as well; ex. U.S. relations with Japan, Hawaii statehood, etc.
