Obtaining Journal Articles & Books

As a Manoa distance education student, there may be journal articles or books that you would like to read that are not available in full-text online or in the UH campus libraries. Hamilton Library will attempt to provide you with the article or book if you request it. This service is for Manoa distance education students only, and is free of charge.

How? There are two ways to submit a request. Each is explained in more detail below. (1) if you are using a database like ERIC, you will see a "Find It" button next to many of the article citations in the database. You must enter the database through the Library's web site to see the "Find It" button. (2) You can submit your request using the Library's Interlibrary Loan request form.
ARTICLES: Option 1, Use the "Find It" Button -- When you click the Find It button for an article citation in a database like ERIC, you will see a page with the option "Step 3 - Request the item through Interlibrary Loan". Select that option and follow the instructions. Indicate that you are a Manoa distance education student in the notes field of the form. A copy of the article will be obtained for you. You will receive an email message with instructions when the article is ready for you to download.
ARTICLES: Option 2, Use the Interlibrary Loan Request Form -- Copy and paste the article citation (from the database or wherever you find it) into the request form and follow the instructions for the form. Indicate that you are a Manoa distance education student in the notes field of the form.
BOOKS: Request through WorldCat (via OCLC FirstSearch) -- In the WorldCat display of the book citation or full record, select the link "See more details for locating this item". On the next page, select the link "External Resources: Request via ILL". Indicate that you are a Manoa distance education student in the notes field of the form.
Remember, these procedures are for articles not available as full-text in a database and for books not available in any UH campus library. Books available in UH campus libraries can be requested through the Hawaii Voyager Library Catalog Request button (top of catalog page).
Note: Procedures such as those described above may change from time to time. If the steps described here do not seem to be current, please notify Wil Frost, Education Librarian, for assistance.

Please indicate in the comments field of whatever form you use that you are a distance education student. Doing so will expedite your request.

After you have sent the form, watch for a reply. The Interlibrary Services office will notify you by email when the book or article you requested is available.
