Find Articles and Journals

America: History & Life

Index of 1,700 journals covering the history and culture of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. To browse material on Pacific voyaging, search “Discovery and exploration” AND “Pacific” in subject search mode. Can also search for specific voyager names in subject mode (e.g. Cook, James).

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a simple tool to search for scholarly literature across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. For best results, use Google Scholar through the library pathway to access fulltext articles.

Hawaii Pacific Journal index

The HPJI indexes roughly 130 journals (both academic and “popular press” that cover Hawaii and the Pacific, dating from 19th century to the present.

Search tips:

Useful searches are Keyword Anywhere, Author Name and Journal Name; for the majority of searches it is best to use the database’s Advanced Search mode, rather than the less flexible Basic Search mode.

Keyword Anywhere searches: When using Keyword Anywhere searching in HPJI, it is important to remember that: a) Journal article titles can often be somewhat cryptic, and may or may not include a specific keyword; b) the Abstract/Summary in HPJI often consists of either an article’s sub-title or its first few sentences. It is thus essential to think as flexibly as possible about what words might appear in a particular story’s title, subtitle or lead sentences. For instance, if looking for information on kava consumption in the Pacific, one should not only search kava, but also consider using scientific names (piper methysticum, piper wichmannii) and other variant names used throughout the region (awa, ava, yaqona, seka, sakau, etc.) and so forth.

Author Name searches: HPJI author searches are often useful in helping to establish publication histories of specific authors, as well as for finding works by well-known scholars in specific academic fields. For instance, users interested in Pacific music and dance might use this function to search for works by Jane Moulin Freeman, Adrienne Kaeppler, Barbara Smith or a host of others.

Journal Name searches: In some instances it can be useful to researchers to view the entire indexing of a particular journal. This can be accomplished by searching the journal title using the Journal Name field search, which will yield every article that has been indexed in HPJI for a specific journal title.

JSTOR

Provides full-text journal articles in various disciplines, dating from 18th century to present (there are even a couple articles by Captain Cook in there!)
