Outreach and Communication Intern (Honolulu, HI)
Paid, full-time, 12-month duration with possible extensions.

Job Description
In support of NOAA’s Pacific Services Center (PSC) Environmental Literacy Team, the internship will focus on developing the on-line presence (web site content development), on-line streaming, photo database, data visualizations, etc. The intern will assist to increase and improve current perceptions and expectations of NOAA; contribute to the positive “NOAA story” to ensure that supporters, frequent users, and new constituents are aware of PSC’s resources, services, and value; contribute to PSC’s recognition as a leader in regional science education and environmental literacy; and provide measurable outcomes and feedback mechanisms and increase community-level education and awareness. The intern will also assist with data visualizations for informal education platforms; maintain and expand the media library, assist with public information exhibits and events (some weekend hours required), and assist with outreach story board, brainstorming, and content research, as needed.

Required Skills
Must possess excellent writing and research skills. Experience working with the public – must like working with people. Must have solid computer skills including Adobe software, database development, and/or Flash, and MS Office Suite. Must be comfortable working independently, under pressure, and on deadlines. Experience communicating science or environmental education or policy issues; knowledge or experience working with Pacific island cultures or traditions; and experience working on online communication and outreach campaigns is desirable.
Must be available for periodic weekend and evening hours.
Writing sample submittal required.

BS degree. Recent graduates or advanced undergraduate students in environmental education, environmental policy and/or sciences, communications, marketing, or related fields encouraged to apply.

Tourism consultant

The tourism consultant is responsible for supporting the tourism 
specialist in all planned and upcoming activities related to ICIMOD’s 
mountain tourism programme, in particular (but not limited to):

• InWEnt tourism workshop (planned for 15-22 June 2009).
o Support organization of workshop.
o Preparation field manual for workshop.
o Rapporting of workshop discussions.
o Developing workshop proceedings brochure, including main discussion 
points, conclusions and recommendations.

• Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) conference (tentatively planned for 1-3 
September 2009).
o Support organization of conference.
o Preparing GHT brochure.

• Development of innovative, fundable proposals.

• Preparation of state of the art brochures on mountain tourism in the 

• Support to tourism activities under other programmes, e.g. IFAD, 
rangland programme, socio-economic database etc.

• Any other upcoming opportunities (not yet defined).

• Minimal Masters degree in tourism, sociology/anthropology, 
development studies or related topic.
• Preferably 3-4 years of experience in working in tourism.
• Strong interest in mountain areas and tourism for poverty reduction.
• Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision, with a 
strong sense of intiative, discipline and self-motivation.
• Experience in mainstreaming gender in projects and activities

• Excellent computer and internet literacy: word processing, 
spreadsheets, email, internet search, participation in electronic 
list-discussions and conferences.
• Demonstrated ability to speak and write professionally and fluently 
in English; knowledge of one or more Asian Languages will be an asset.
• Physically fit to undertake occasional travel to remote and 
difficult mountain regions.

Reporting and Supervising
The consultant reports to, and is being supervised by, the tourism 
specialist of the Innovative Livelhood options Action Area. He or she 
carries no budgetary responsibilities.

Duration of contract
Contract period: 1st April 2009 - 15th July 2009.
Possibilities for extension, subject to successful execution of work 
and availability of funding.

NRs. 35,000 per month
