About Us

The UH Manoa Sustainable Tourism Research Group is composed of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students interested in researching sustainable solutions growing in popularity to develop a sustainable Hawai'i.

Mission

We are working towards improving Environmental and Sustainability Research and instruction at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.

Sustainable Tourism

"Sustainable tourism in its purest sense, is an industry which attempts to make a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income, employment, and the conservation of local ecosystems. It is responsible tourism that is both ecologically and culturally sensitive."

Achieving Sustainable Tourism in Hawaii

"Sustainable Toursims should make optimal use of environmental resources, respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities by providing socio-economic benefits to all stakeholders."

Sustainable Tourism in Hawaii 2009 report

Ecotourism

"Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." (TIES, 1990)

Ecology

The ecology club at University of Hawaii at Manoa is always looking for students interested in the flora in and around Hawaii. They do projects on a month to month basis that support the environment and beautification of the campus. In cooperation with S.T.E.P. they are working toward a more sustainable Hawaii.
