Summit for Sustainable Travel In Hawai'i

It started as a spark in the eye of Dr. John Cusick and Dr. Harold Richins, igniting the sustainable tourism movement on the University of Hawaii campus. Powered by students and faculty, the Summit for Sustainable Travel in the Hawaiian Islands kicked off this year with a lot of energy. Members of the community gathered from all walks of life and even some from outside of our Island community to partake in the inaugural event.

Activities and Education

A unique style of discussion groups and public forums aimed at inspiring ideas to flow out of the Travel minded attendees and onto paper. The groups talked about how they would see Hawaii in 2050, and what changes they would make today to prevent or progress the changes that they forsaw. A second discusion gave the group a chance to come up with solutions to the dilemas that sustainable travel is facing right here, right now. A third discussion brought up the areas of opportunity based on the solutions that were proposed. By the end of the day when it was all said and done, the energy in the East-West Center was opptimistic for change, and the tools that are needed to do so.
