Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)
Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up through December 31, 2019), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), assigned and located at the University of Hawai‘i Information Technology Services (ITS), Cyberinfrastructure on the Island of Oahu. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Develops and maintains database and research storage applications in support of the Information Technology Services Cyberinfrastructure group and the EPSCoR Track 1 ‘Ike Wai Project supporting the full data lifecycle. Works with ITS Cyberinfrastructure (CI) developers on software application, gateways and pipelines that utilize and store scientific research data. Works with researchers on managing their scientific data and on data dissemination. Aides in applying ontologies and controlled vocabularies for metadata and data organization. Develops and maintains databases for scientific research data. Provides training and technical assistance to end users, including developing technical documents.
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a domain science in the Biological, Physical, or Social Sciences.
EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years of experience as a Database Manager.
ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Expertise in the following skill areas: database design and implementation; knowledge of SQL or NoSQL databases; understanding of data life cycles; understanding of techniques for quality control of data to ensure adequacy, accuracy and validity. Ability to translate user requirements into functional solutions.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a data intensive domain science strongly preferred. Research experience in a data intensive research project. Experience in agile software design, software development, implementation, and production level support. Experience using web application frameworks such as Django, Ruby on Rails, Angular, etc. Experience with databases, data management tools, annotation, and curation techniques. Proficiency in scripting languages, R programming and/or big data analytic approaches. Experience with semantics technologies such as OWL and SPARQL. Experience scripting in Python, Ruby, UNIX shell or other scripting languages.
