A Few Real-life Graduates and Their EdTech Positions

The department graduates on the average 10 students a year (graduation is only in the Spring semester), and though each year has produced outstanding graduates, only a very few can be highlighted here:

Kathy Schmidt (1980) has moved from private sector to Academia, and is now Assistant Professor of EducationalTechnology at the University of Texas in Austin.

Bob Pikovsky (1991), a long-time sixth grade teacher in Hawaii, moved to the mainland where he is Director of Technology for the Educational Information and Resource Center that serves New Jersey teachers, students, and parents. He still occasionally teaches for the department, especially a web-based course on networking.

Glint Gima (1992) was named RookieTeacher of 1993 by the Maui District, and has been a staunch proponent of judicious use of technology in the classroom.

Mark Peterson (1993), formerly a teacher of English in the Department of Defense Schools in Germany, and later an educational technology instructor and developer at one of the seven state community colleges (Leeward), is now the Director of Academic Technology at Inver Hills Community College in Minnesota.

Kelvin Chun (1995) is perhaps the most "decorated" graduate of the program, having received a Disney Teacher Award in 1999, and the Honolulu District Teacher of the Year award that same year. Kelvin has combined his math, science, and computer skills to create innovative designs in technology program for K-6 students, and has been recognized for his efforts locally as well as nationally.

Leanne Chun (1997) entered the ed tech program after receiving her electrical engineering degree. After several years in the private technology sector in Honolulu, she is now an instructor and developer in educational communications and technology at Leeward Community College.

Mark Hines (1997) is Technology and Science Chair at Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu. His numerous honors include the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching which he received from President Clinton in 1995, and the Tandy Technology Scholars Prize.

Hae Lee (1999) served during her final year in the program as manager of several departmental faculty grants, and her recognized ability and efficiency led to her appointment as Project Manager of a substantial grant at the University of Baltimore.

Thanhtruc ("Truc") Nguyen (2000) has anchored educational technology program on her undergraduate degree in Zoology and strong interest in marine sciences (in which she earned the Ocean Policy Certificate). Recently, Truc made a well-received presentation on "Media and Textbook Connection Database" at the SITE Conference in Sand Diego.

Ross Egloria (2000) joined the faculty of Leeward Community College where he holds a position of educational technology developer as well as that of instructor.

Lisa Hasler-Waters (2001) serves as the instructional designer at the Old Dominion University in Virginia. Her final project was a pioneering effort in "Building Collaboration Skills in the Virtual Classroom".

Hopefully, some of the above information will prove helpful to all prospective applicants for admission to the Educational Technology program at the University of Hawaii.
