Overview: Tell It Like It Was

Announcer: Supporting Hawaii's teachers integrating standards, curriculum, and technology, this is ETEC Connections. Tell It Like It Was portrays a Hawaiian history project using high-tech communications to integrate standards based curriculum. The project combines English, history and media at Moanalua High.

Female Student 1: Our topic is Hawaiian fabrics and the history - fade out -

Female Student 2: You're not only looking for information or data and stuff, but you're also looking for visual aids so that the audience or the people can understand what you're trying to - fade out -

Lynne Sueoka, Teacher: This is the first year that we are doing this complex an integration. We're starting with the freshman class who are new to the "MeneMac Learning Center" and for the first time they have English and social studies and media within our center. They started out with doing oral histories, but it also carried over into language arts. And then, they - we worked it into a web production. There's a lot demanded of them as far as project management, because it's all project based they need to be able to use their time. They need to be able to be very focused and so I'd say that, more than a lot of academic skills or the grades, although they are very high achievers, but it's really this kind of self discipline and self knowledge that they need to succeed.

Female Student 3: Putting it together is the fun part.

Announcer: The blending of English, history and media in Tell it Like it Was, provides yet another example of the powerful potentials of learning with the tools of technology. It's a kind of approach that blurs the lines between disciplines to create a more comprehensive learning experience.
