resources
Welcome to the PR*TEC Pacific Voices Resource page. This section is intended to grow and change with input and direction from our Pacific Voices Community.  This is not intended as a comprehensive list on any topic. We intend for this section to "show case" a changing set of resources.  If any member of our community would like to provide an annotated reference for this resource site, we will appreciate their contributions.

Web Sites for the classroom
There are many Internet references for classroom teachers. We will identify a few exemplary sites. The landscape of the worldwide web changes everyday. A teacher is best served by learning Internet research techniques. *These research techniques will be addressed in depth in Module II.

Books and Articles
The worldwide collection of print material is also growing at a breath taking pace. We will restrict our reference list to a few exemplary resources, including materials recommended by teacher trainers in the Pacific.

Online Courses
The Pacific Voices Technology Kits include pre-paid tuition for team members to enroll in the Apple Professional Development online courses. We do not know how useful these courses may be. We encourage team members to try them out and provide us with your feedback. Links to the online courses are provided below.

Standards
In the United States various professional organizations have published standards for English, Language Arts, Reading, Math, Science and Technology. These standards can be helpful, but they should not supplant the standards set by your own island entity. On our Pacific Voices web site, we have links to some of these national and HawaiiÅfs sites to make it easier for you to review these resources. You may want to contact the Curriculum Specialists within your own Department or Ministry of Education for the professional standards expected in your community.

Commercial Software Reviews
There are many commercial software programs that purport to promote literacy. This too is a very changeable market. We have provided links to some comprehensive software review sites. We will also include software reviews provided by members within our own Pacific Voices Community.

  • Mac Review Zone <macreviewzone.com> General reviews of products for the Apple computer.
  • EvaluTech <www.evalutech.sreb.org> EvaluTech is a searchable database that contains more than 7000 reviews of instructional materials recommended for classroom use in kindergarten through grade 12. Trained reviewers using extensive criteria evaluate these materials. Products evaluated include computer software, audio/visual materials, CD-ROM-based reference databases, websites, and print materials. Evaluation criteria include some correlation to state student academic standards. There is no fee for searching or for printing reviews.
  • The Children's Software Revue&Mac254; <www.childrenssoftware.com/links.html> Magazine on Children's Software, Smart Toys & Videogames (with Educational Value). Page links to other reviews. Magazine has pretty good reviews too but you need to subscribe.
  • Educational Sofware Evaluations <ra.terc.edu/SoftwareEval/SoftwareEvalHome.cfm> This site contains evaluations of software submitted by teachers in the Regional Alliance Schools Network from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Assistive Technology
We embrace "disability" within a paradigm of "diversity." We believe that the disability movement is part of a worldwide recognition of the value and importance of diversity within human communities. We are all stronger in diversity. The sites on assistive technology grow daily. These are a few links to sites on disabilities that will lead you to specific areas such as technologies for hearing or communication.

Pacific Voices Technology Kit
Each island team has been provided with a rich set of technology tools and the ongoing supports to utilize them. A link to that technology kit is provided here.
