FACTS & STATS FROM 2008

Hawai'i's Education & Government eWaste Disposal Days 2008 was a statewide ecycling effort that provided a 5-day opportunity for free earth-friendly disposal of computers and other unwanted electronics by educational institutions (public/private schools or universities), City, County, State or Federal/Military branches, small to medium sized businesses, and non-profits; along with a 1-day collection from Hawai'i households. The University of Hawai'i (UH) facilitated the program, with participation by the Hawai'i Department of Education (DOE); recycling and disposal services were provided courtesy of Apple.

There were seven drop off sites on the campuses of UH at Manoa, Leeward Community College, and Windward Community College on Oahu; UH at Hilo and Kealakehe High School on Hawai'i (the Big Island); and one each at Kauai Community College and Maui Community College.

The program surpassed the success of the 2006 eWaste Disposal Days program when 51 containers comprising 1.2 million pounds of electronics were collected. 2008's eWaste total amounted to 1.5 million pounds, Containers collected per island were: Oahu 65.25, Big Island 6.25, Maui 3.0, and Kauai 0.5.
