To assist students and their families to plan ahead for matriculation at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, the estimated budgets are used to determine the degree of applicants’ need for financial aid, the difference between family resources and the applicants’ status. The Cost of Attendance Budget is comprised of the following items:
- Tuition
- Fees
- Books and Supplies
- Housing and Food
- Personal Expenses
- Transportation
Per Federal regulations, a student’s financial aid (grants, work-study, loans) and scholarships/resources cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance.
The Cost of Attendance Budgets are broken down by degree type, residency, and will also vary depending on the amount of credits a student is enrolled, and whether the student will be living at home or on/off campus. The Cost of Attendance Budget is not the upfront direct cost that the student needs to pay to Mānoa. Items such as Housing and Food, Personal Expenses, Book and Supplies, and Transportation are ESTIMATES of the costs that a student might incur. Housing and Food expenses are only paid directly to Mānoa when a student is living in the residence halls and has a meal plan with Student Housing. Students who live at home with parent(s) will still have an allocation in their Cost of Attendance budget for Housing and Food.
Residency
The Office of Admissions and Graduate Division will determine residency, Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)/Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) at the time of application to the school.
Additional Expenses and Fees
Certain programs and courses may have additional fees that are charged upon registration. Enrolling in Outreach College may result in additional expenses and fees, please visit Outreach College’s website and contact them with any questions.
If your cost of attendance does not truly reflect your expenses, there are options available to increase your cost of attendance and aid. You may include additional educational costs such as a computer expense, airfare, childcare or medical expenses, please reach out to finaid@hawaii.edu to request the Cost of Attendance Increase form.
