Mr. Jovanie de la Cruz holds a double Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and in Filipino Language and Philippine Literature with certificate in Law and Society from University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Jovanie was a Dean’s Lister throughout his college career and graduated with honors. He was invited and inducted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the oldest liberal arts and sciences academic honorary society in the United States. He is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society and recipient of prestigious scholarships such asF ulbright-Hays Scholarship for Advance Filipino Abroad Program (AFAP)in De La Salle University in the Philippines, Charles R. Hemenway Scholarship, UH Political Science Departmental Achievement Scholarship, and others from both Hawai`i Community Foundation and UH Foundation.
As a student majoring in Filipino and Philippine Literature, Jovanie became involved in the publication of the Katipunan Magazin, the official publication of the Katipunan Club. He became the editor-in-chief from Spring semester of 2007 until Spring semester of2009. He later became the student advisor of the publication from Fall semester of 2009 until he graduated in Fall semester of 2010. He now serves as the faculty adviser of the Katipunan Magazin.
His excellent academic record and unwavering commitment to the Filipino program led to a teaching position at UH Manoa. He teaches IP368B: Philippine Film, Fil 315: Aural Comprehension and 300-400 level language courses. He is also a poet and translator.
