Cultural Note

Courting a woman takes many forms in the Philippines:  a man can serenade a woman, can formally visit her house to show his interest or he can write a letter.  Since writing a letter is as important as serenading or paying a visit to the love’s home, a man must show his best.  This includes writing legibly which is a big deal among the Filipino women of the 1950s and 1960s.  As in formal courtship where a man should dress up, handwriting should be clear and legible to show sincerity of intentions.

"Peks Man" is a song popularized by Sylvia La Torre in the late 1950s to the early 1960s. It is a slang phrase which is equivalent to "I promise" or "I swear". This phrase is uttered after one promised to dutifully do something. It can also be uttered to say that one is telling the truth. "Peks man" can therefore be synonymous to "mamatay man" in Filipino.
