Placement Exams

The Hawaiian or Second Language (HSL) requirement varies by UHM college/school. To fulfill the HSL requirement with Filipino language, students must demonstrate compentency at the 202 (or equivalent) level by doing one of the following:

a. Completing a four-semester sequence (usually 101, 102, 201, and 202) in Filipino language.

b. Demonstrating competence by taking a UHM Filipino language placement examination. The program regularly administers the exam on the week before the beginning of every semester or by appointment during the Fall or Spring semesters. Students who place at 102 or higher can earn back credits for levels skipped after completing the course at which the student is placed with a grade of C or better.

c. Receiving a Filipino language-requirement waiver. Students who place at level 301 or higher may be given a language requirement waiver.

Students with no prior Filipino language experience should enroll in FIL 101. Anyone wanting to enroll in FIL 101 may do so without consent. Students with experience with Filipino language (i.e. high school instruction, live with native speakers, etc.) can take the placement exam to enroll in courses above FIL 101. The test is free.

*Please contact Dr. Pia Arboleda for the current placement test schedule and make an appointment at least two days prior to the test date.
