Focus Requirements

Students who enter UHM with no transfer credit have the following Focus requirements.

Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Issues 1 course ("H")
Contemporary Ethical Issues 1 course ("E")
Oral Communication 1 course ("O")
Writing intensive 5 courses, including 2 numbered 300 or higher ("W" --formerly "WI")

Within-System Transfer Students

Focus requirements for within-system transfer students vary depending on the students' year of entry and the number of credits completed at a UH community college, UH Hilo, or UH West O'ahu. Transfer students should verify their Focus requirements with a UHM college advisor. Do not rely on this website.

*at least 2 of the W courses must be at the 300- or 400-level

Summary - transfer of Focus credits:

  • Writing-intensive: the "W" or "WI" credit transfers from any UH campus to any UH campus
  • Hawaiian, Asian, & Pacific Issues ("H"): several UH community college courses transfer to UHM as "H"
  • Contemporary Ethical Issues ("E"): several UH community college courses transfer to UHM as "E" depending on when the courses were taken
  • Oral Communication ("O"): several UH community college courses transfer to UHM as "O" depending on when the courses were taken.

External Transfer Students

Students who enter UHM with transfer credit from a mainland college/university or a foreign university have a reduced set of Focus requirements. Transfer students should verify their Focus requirements with a UHM college advisor. Do not rely on this website.
