Much of my professional career to date has centered around K-12 science and environmental education. Through curriculum development and teacher workshops, I have endeavored to serve as a bridge between the scientific and educational communities. My experience has included projects in bilingual/multicultural education in the United States, and international work in Bolivia, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Mexico, and the Philippines.
I have a strong interest in sustainable coastal resources management in both developed and developing countries. My doctoral research through the Department of Geography is focusing on the role of youth and environmental education in promoting the long-term sustainability of coastal resource management programs. Social science research from around the world indicates that active youth participation in community projects fosters a long-term sense of responsibility towards the natural environment.
At present, I have identified three new youth initiatives (one each in Hawaii, Australia, and Indonesia) for further study. I plan to investigate the key socio-cultural, political, economic, and pedagogical factors that are important for the establishment and long-term success of these and similar youth programs.
