EECB Research And Travel Award Grantee Expectations


In return for financial support received from the GK-12 project, EECB research and travel award grantees are expected to contribute to the goals of the project, that is, to improve the content knowledge and inquiry skills of students and teachers in K-12 schools in Hawaii. Grantees may contribute in a variety of ways such as:
  • Being an "Ask A Scientist" participant through the project web site
  • Participating in planning and/or conducting a conference workshop for teachers
  • Assisting in a workshop/presentation at a conference
  • Visiting a K-12 classroom as a guest scientist
  • Assisting a GK-12 Fellow during a field trip
  • Presenting his/her research at a GK-12 sponsored public forum
  • Working with a GK-12 Fellow in some aspect of their project
  • Other activities to be negotiated



In order to optimize the impact of project activities and sustain support of K-12 science education, all grantees are expected to:
  • Participate in an orientation session to the GK-12 project, its objectives, and K-12 science education reform efforts
  • Schedule their activities with the project education coordinator
  • Develop and demonstrate an understanding of inquiry-based science education
  • Contribute to the K-12 effort to implement inquiry-based science learning in schools
  • Cooperate with project evaluators in collecting and interpreting meaning of data on the impact of project activities
  • Keep a web-based log of activities including assessment data
  • Model positive, professional behavior at all times


PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR EXPECTATIONS
  • Manage all aspects of grant administration
  • Complete and submit reports to funding agency
  • Approve expenditure requests
  • Provide direction and guidance on all activities undertaken in the project
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Solicit and select fellows for the project
  • Provide information on project logistics, benefits, equipment and supplies purchases, and how to access them
  • Solicit and approve research and travel grants
  • Assist evaluators in collecting impact data
  • Model positive, professional behavior at all times

EDUCATION MENTOR EXPECTATIONS
  • Assist in the selection of fellows to the program
  • Establish and maintain positive and supportive communication with fellows regarding their understanding of K-12 education
  • Develop and provide education seminars, workshops, and training in K-12 education consistent with reform efforts of the Hawaii Department of Education
  • Develop, solicit, and negotiate school applications for fellows' participation
  • Assist in negotiating assignment of fellows to schools
  • Work with support personnel in arranging field excursions as appropriate
  • Work with fellows to plan and conduct public forums, conference presentations, workshops for teachers, and similar events
  • Assist and provide guidance to fellows in preparing activities and lessons to be used in working with students, teachers, and community members
  • Provide orientation for EECB research and travel grant awardees to the GK-12 project, its objectives, and K-12 science education reform efforts
  • Assist in scheduling fellows' and EECB research/travel grant awardees' activities
  • Arrange for access to University Laboratory School classrooms to observe inquiry-based teaching and learning and to try out sample activities as appropriate
  • Assist evaluators in collecting impact data
  • Model positive, professional behavior at all times

EVALUATOR EXPECTATIONS
  • Evaluate the impact of project activities on learning and teaching
  • Work with principal investigators and Fellows to design and conduct an evaluation consistent with goals and objectives of the GK-12 project and accepted standards for program evaluation
  • Provide instruction for fellows and others in designing and interpreting results of project evaluation
  • Solicit data from fellows, teachers, administrators, principal investigators, mentors and others associated with the project
  • Analyze and summarize data related to the impact of project activities
  • Complete and submit reports in a timely and professional manner
  • Model positive, professional behavior at all times
